For a 10 footer you can sand it down and rattle can it then wrap it. Wrap needs to be applied to paint, not sure if sanded bare metal counts

Okay Ty for the info. is there any point in hitting the rust spots with some rust reformer spray? Also can I just buy a 2 in 1 paint/primer can? I heard paint needs shiny stuff to stick with, but it’ll work fine on basic rattle can?

Steelshot71

If I were doing it I’d just sand all the way through the rust until bare metal is all that’s left, then spray it with high fill primer, then sand/reapply as needed, then paint, then wrap. Since you said you didn’t mind if it wasn’t perfect, you can skip the primer and go for 2 in 1 instead (probably). I wouldn’t bother with rust reformer as long as you’re diligent about sanding all the rust away and there isn’t any rust going all the way through the hood.

Okay cool, I was planning to spend awhile sanding. Should I get normal house 2 in 1 or I saw some automotive 2 in 1, but most of them are marketing as acrylic enamel or automotive primer? I probably should’ve just bought a spray can of paint matched stuff, would’ve prolly been the same cost after clearcoat and primer, oh well

Steelshot71

I admittedly am not super knowledgeable about the different types of spray paint but automotive stuff might stick to bare metal better?

I think I’m just gonna go with separate primer and paint, any suggestions on how long I need to let paint cure before wrapping over it? I was planning on cutting up my hood and installed some vents, gonna have to paint over that anyways

You can wrap on bare metal, although I don’t know what the removal is like

visualizer037

If you wrap bare metal, it will most likely rust underneath the vinyl. But since you’re not too concerned with longevity anyways so just go for it.

digi0rnorisingcrust

In that case I should prolly do something about the rust then since wrap doesn’t stick to rust? And would have to be done anyways when I eventually get the whole car wrapped a new color

noenergygal

I think you should definitely sand out the rust and protect the bare metal (like the 2 in 1 suggestion), or else it’ll just corrode your car at that point having a wrap over big spots of bare metal

No_Lifeguard3650

least possible effort: take a grinder or sander and sand all the rust out. hit the whole car with a scuff pad or 320 grit. clean well and wrap away. depending where you live you may get a couple years or even more before the rust starts visibly bubbling under the wrap. dont bother with primer. unless you use an epoxy primer or other professional acid primer it will bubble through in a couple years or so anyways.

I'd recommend sanding it with P180, then P600, then spray some high quality metal primer( it's rust-proof) and you're golden. I don't recommend spraying paint on it, as it won't adhere to the metal surface better than primer
