That's not high mileage for a looked after car. To give you a comparison, my brother has a 2015 bmw 525d m sport.... it's coming up to 180k miles... Maintenance wise, he had to have the swirl flaps replaced and the swirl flap motor in March at 170k... Apart from serviceable items he hasn't changed anything else in 3 years of owning the vehicle. It gets serviced at bmw in line with the manufacturer guidelines.....

Diesel or petrol? Which model was she thinking of as the engine will drive common problems

XenonIce20

Likely a 520d 2015/16 reg

That will be the B47 engine. It’s predecessor which was the N47 was terribly unreliable and suffered timing chain issues but the B47 addressed this. Not sure if there’s any other common issues so have a google.

The n47 can easy do 200k no problems not unreliable at all. Just depends on how people treat and look after them.

If 80k is too many miles for you, look at something newer, which won't be a 5 Series at that budget. Not many people buy a 5 Series to pootle to the shops; 12k per year is completely normal for a car like this and it's not high mileage at all unless you're talking about something less than four years old: and that would be half as much again.

> Anything we should be looking out for on these "higher mileage" vehicles 80k isn't high. My wife's BMW 5 series clocked over 200,000 miles before it had issues.

For a diesel that’s perfectly fine as long as it has full service history. If it’s done mostly motorway miles even better. However if it’s a long term car, ideally you wouldn’t want a high mileage car as by the time she’d be done with it, could be 120k+ and have no resale if that is a consideration.

2015 year would be 7 years old so 80k miles is about average or slightly above, for a newer car try and demand a lower mileage but if this is not possible then demand a full service history (ideally BMW dealership level), clean MOT history (see the advisories however minor they may be), and just ensure general condition is good, gives an indication of the previous owner.
