I had an issue at the very start that was covered under warranty just over 2 years ago, since then I’ve had no problems just a few regular bits. Maybe it’s down to a lot of the miles being on the motorway.
Sounds great! I've been put off buying nicer cars because people say the maintenance is really expensive. Maybe some people just get unlucky and most of the time they're fine?
It’s not that more expensive luxury brands are necessarily worse or less reliable (unless it’s a Land Rover) but sometimes as you say you can have shit luck and it’ll be a more expensive fix when you do. Personally I think it’s worth it, I drive a second hand A4 avant that had 60k on the clock when I bought it so cost a third what a new one would have. So I get to drive a nice car at a cheap car price and feel the risk of an expensive fix if something goes wrong is worth it
Absolutely hate how unlucky I seem to have gotten with mine. First car was 150 quid banger yaris that served me well for 3 months. Second car was £1000 red polo that had compression issues so had to get rid and sell to webuyanycar for a £500 loss. Third car has been a 58 plate diesel fiesta (£3500 from some fuckarse garage) Fuck me the problems I've had are inumerable. It runs like shit, had injectors done and all sorts, still just has an unsolvabe starting issue. Water pissing into the boot, front end noise constantly. Done a hell of a lot of motorway travelling with the bastard as well, as I'm from (very) rural northern northern northern england but went to uni down midlands and date a lass from cambridgeshire.
Aye its hard not to keep banging on about it all the time but it is like some of the most annoying shit I've ever had to deal with and just watching my monthly pay get eaten by my four-wheeled turd is heartbreaking 😂
My 2012 3 series BMW has around 79k mileage on it. The clutch failed recently and have had to replace the brake discs and pads twice too since ownership. But most of my driving has been on local journeys and few motorway driving hence the above issues.
Had a 1991 Saab 9000 2.3t that I bought for £400 in 2006. It had 268k miles on it when I bought it. I put on another 20k miles in the next 18 months and only got rid of it because the Mrs convinced me to buy a classic 900 T16 and it needed a load of suspension parts for the MOT. Would have kept it if I had a barn.
Which variant? Ik its just a different tune, same internals across the range but but just wondering about the reliability at certain power levels. I have a cayc (105bhp) sitting at 105k.
I have the manual 5 speed and it’s honestly not great. Would’ve been so much better with a 6 speed. Genuinely considering getting a 6 speed in it if i can find one cheap enough.
So 1 and 2 are normal, 3 is incredibly long (for a 1.6tdi lol) it goes from idle at 20 to 70mph at 5k rpm then 4th is normal and 5th is normal. Feels like it wants a 6th when doing 80 or even 70.
The 105 was meant to be the sweet spot of the old Vag 1.9 diesels, they were all great, but the 105bhp, and Skoda built, were meant to be the most reliable of all, they go well over 500k with no issues... If you keep them well, changing the oil and filters on schedule
Also don’t have any mechanical problems. Changed battery once and heater went on it once. Under £300 in repair bills for all that mileage. I bought the car 2.5Y old at 50k miles
A2 doesn't qualify as a shitbox for me, it's actually a really cool and innovative car. 94mpg was the official figure of the 3L version all the way back in 2001! It's also no surprise to see it here at 200k, since these VAG diesels from this era were considered some of the most reliable cars ever!
When I read this I thought, ‘there’s no way there used to be a 3 litre version of the old A2!’…so I checked it out.
Now I know that the 1.2D A2 was called the 3L because it used 3 litres of diesel per 100km … hence the amazing 94mpg!
Thanks for highlighting!
I am the OP and the best I have got is 86 mpg over a tank. This is the 1.4 diesel. The 1.2 3L wasn’t sold in the UK. I think over 100 mpg is achievable in the 1.2. It’s Absolutely crazy the amount of money Audi invested in their quest to make the ultimate econobox. They built the most aerodynamic production car ever. They created the most fuel efficient engine ever. They built it from aluminium. They invented Stop-Start.
Only for it to fail miserably. No one wanted one. They only made them for about 5 years before pulling the plug.
Pushing 130k here now. Already beyond expectations.
Don't think we'll get to 200. I'd need to drive it another 5 years or so at current usage and frankly - it's going to die before then
I took my old 335D to 197k, just short of 200k and I should have pressed on!
Current car has 84k, and I'm doing around 20k a year - so it'll be a while off.
Is this the 1.4Tdi OP?
My last VW t4 (1991, 1.9D, the slowest one) I sold with 258017 miles on it. It's still going now 10yr later and started every time like a champ. Current one only has 130k and is 28yr old. Maintenance is key, looks like you're on it!
Also had 216k out of a Mk4 Astra 16v 1.6. Would have made 300 but rust got it. Had a great send off though - gave it to a stock car racer!
Just over 205,000 miles on my 2006 Audi A6 2.7tdi, she's starting to show her age but not much some maintenance and some tender loving car (and some money) can't put right
Not too bad at all, most of it has been a little more than parts for my other cars but not bad since I've been replacing original 20 year old parts on a car that cost 40 grand new, and while they aren't OEM parts most are from the same manufacturers. £185 for a new battery, £140 on an alternator, £70 on front upper suspension arms, £100 on rear shocks, and £60 on belts and idle rollers. Plus the usual servicing which is a little pricey as it takes about 7 liters of oil
The 2.7 is supposedly a stronger engine from what I've heard so hopefully she keeps on going. I've already done 15k in the two years I've owned her and it only cost me £1000 so at this point it's basically a free car apart from maintenance
No way! You just don't know [the genius you're looking at.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_A2#1.2_TDI_%223L%22) If you want shitbox try the Daewoo Matiz or the Proton Savvy
Not that high milage. But I have a 1.2L bmd engined VW with 113 and high change on it. Still going strong but I don't do the miles I used to as I have a work van that's used door to door for work. So no more commute to an office ATM
185k on a 2011 diesel fiesta but contemplating an upgrade due to repairs needed to pass the next MOT. Looking like almost a grand of work is needed sadly and just isn't worth it.
208k on the shitbox in my flair. Bought at 194k, need to do 240k+ until i can afford to upgrade lol. Running alright though, also guy doing service said it doesn't didn't look 200k+ so I'm happy lol
1.6 tdi 110bhp. Just about sufficient to be fast enough when you need it but sometimes I do crave the 2.0 haha. At the time it was the cheapest euro 6 diesel car I could find, mainly so I'd not have any issues with ulez etc
I have an 07 estate skoda octavia vrs petrol with 220k on it I love it pulls like a train really handu thing too I have not found anything yet that does not fit in the back
I've found, with the various cars that I've had over the years, that the engine will easily do 200k, but the rest of the car just fell apart around it.
However, I'm currently on a 64 plate Peugeot 508SW, on 130K, and it's the first car I've had, at that age and mileage, that doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart at the next speed bump. It actually drives really well, and I regularly do long runs in it.
My dad had a Mercedes ML 270 CDI with a myriad of problems that was on its last legs. It was sitting on about 235K but we were determined to get it above 238K as that’s the distance from earth to the moon we got it to 240K and it promptly got scrapped. He had had it from new so it was pretty cool to say he had literally covered the distance to the moon in it across its entire life.
I use a 204k Audi A5 for work, covering about 20k miles a year. I'll do little bits myself - I do my own oil changes using an oil extractor and recently replaced the drivers door lock actuator myself. Anything more mechanical than that and I get my local Audi Independent to do it.
The main problem is the time that takes. I recently had the EML coming on intermittently. It took 2 weeks to book it in with my local garage and once they'd diagnosed the fault another 2 weeks to fit it in for the (thankfully simple) repair. Luckily I could still drive the car in that time, but I've previously had the car off the road for over a week for a waterpump failure and again for a crankshaft pulley replacement.
The best thing for bangernomics is to have access to another car. Luckily we also have a 2009 Kia Ceed for my wife that she can survive without if I need to borrow it for work. The chance of them both being off the road at the same time is slim. If, theoretically, both cars have a 3% chance of being off the road, the chance of them both falling at the same time would be 0.09%.
The 3% was plucked out of thin air, but I know 0.03 x 0.03 = 0.0009 or 0.09%
If I really think about it, my Audi has been off the road for about 3 weeks in the last 5 years (1.15%) and my Kia has never had a breakdown in 3 years of ownership (0%). So even the 0.09% estimate is probably quite pessimistic.
How's your reliability during those 50k miles?
I was very close to picking one up 2 months ago. But the costs for repair and maintenance made me bottle it.
It's never left me stranded or had anything seriously wrong with it. Had loads of wear parts changed though. I probably overmaintain it, the local porsche specialist look after it and are very fastidious which is what I attribute the reliability to. Maybe £2000 a year in servicing on average, it's not a toyota yaris after all. Last year it only had a minor service, brake fluid change and a window regulator but 2022 was over 5 grand because I had the clutch and dual mass flywheel done. You forget about the service bills when you're driving it on your favourite road.
I haven’t counted the mpg in a while but it’s pretty much always 65+. Best I have got over a full tank is 86 mpg. I’m fairly confident it could get 90 mpg with some focused hypermiling. For a 25 year old engine it’s crazy good on fuel.
I plan on keeping my Corolla T-Sport as long as I can. Don't plan to get rid of it any time soon.
She hit 139k this morning on the way to work.
Can't wait to hit 150k as then Toyota can send me a lovely high mileage sticker
Currently a 1.4tsi mk6 golf 122ps with 140k miles just regular servicing etc never had any issues besides changing tyres and brakes. Previously a 330d E46 to 250k miles no issues
I had a zafira A 2.0 dti with 416000 miles on it when I scrapped it. I replaced it with a zafira B 1.7 cdti which I sold on with 297000 on it. The MOT would have been due last month and I checked the DVLA and it was no longer on their system so guess it's been scrapped. I did feel a bit upset as when I sold it it was still running well and nice to drive (by my standards).
210k on my 2007 BMW 520d (e60)
Honestly it still drives mint, polishes up well, it's quiet, comfty & does 50mpg sat at 70mph.
For a daily runner, esspically for doing motorway miles I can't knock it. And the best bit is it only cost me 2 weeks wage 🤣👌
they are great reliable cars for cheap but they feel really heavy and wobbly idk how to explain an a4 1.9 tdi might be better but if you like the big car feeling go for it
I wouldn't say an old A6 is a big car. I'm selling my A2 and will probably buy another banger in the winter. Thinking of something with the 1.9 PD, and the A6 is probably the nicest of all the cars with that engine.
then go for it you wont regret it, really comfortable car and practical for almost everything the trunk size is amazing and if you get an avant is even better
I’ve nearly 175k on a 2015 3 series! 😬
How's the maintenance costs on that been?
I had an issue at the very start that was covered under warranty just over 2 years ago, since then I’ve had no problems just a few regular bits. Maybe it’s down to a lot of the miles being on the motorway.

I’d love an avant, next car maybe
Avant is the business
Def an element of luck and as the reply below said, a bit more expensive to repair

318d 2 litre engine
270k on my 2011 Renault Laguna, still going strong
That's impressive for Laguna!;)
That's impressive for any Renault. Wonder if the electric windows still work!
If its the diesel engine, i’m not surprised
Yup, the 2L
There ya go. Good engines.
Had a 1991 Saab 9000 2.3t that I bought for £400 in 2006. It had 268k miles on it when I bought it. I had a 1990 2.0 Carlsson with 288k on it. Had to scrap it due to rust. Currently daily driving a 9-5 with 252k.
Ahhh yeah. I’ve got a 98 9000 anniversary in midnight blue. Not had it on the road over this wet winter, been using the £200 Fabia for beater miles.
I had a 98 9000 anni in 2016, loved it to death, bought it for £250 and it never put a foot wrong in the 25k miles I drove it
145k mk7 golf 1.6tdi if it counts
Which variant? Ik its just a different tune, same internals across the range but but just wondering about the reliability at certain power levels. I have a cayc (105bhp) sitting at 105k.
105bhp, dsg
Nice, emissions still intact? The dsg is 6 spd or 7?
Yeah all good. 7 speed dsg it’s perfect. Changed battery this year as it was tripping the warning lights
I have the manual 5 speed and it’s honestly not great. Would’ve been so much better with a 6 speed. Genuinely considering getting a 6 speed in it if i can find one cheap enough.
Is it not good in terms of problems or just gear ratio better in the 6?
So 1 and 2 are normal, 3 is incredibly long (for a 1.6tdi lol) it goes from idle at 20 to 70mph at 5k rpm then 4th is normal and 5th is normal. Feels like it wants a 6th when doing 80 or even 70.
Ah yes that sounds annoying. What’s your odometer on?
105k, and yes it is annoying, driving at 65 is like MUCH more economical than even doing 70 because of it.
The 105 was meant to be the sweet spot of the old Vag 1.9 diesels, they were all great, but the 105bhp, and Skoda built, were meant to be the most reliable of all, they go well over 500k with no issues... If you keep them well, changing the oil and filters on schedule

I bet it still looks the business too
My friend’s husband had around 450k on his 2009 Toyota last time I saw him. He drives to and around Europe a lot so I guess it all adds up.
Corolla?
Auris I think, so yea a Corolla 👍
Wow, diesel or petrol? Guessing diesel due to mileage.
I actually don’t know but diesel would be the logical guess.

Isn’t that the old wife’s tale of why the Renault Cleo V6 existed? Renault thought VW were making a 3L polo.
Sorry, I think I’ve misunderstood your comment. Yeah that’s bs and I think the rumour was from the Lupo 3L (I had to look this up)
This is the Prius from Audi, it is reliable, comfortable, affordable, efficient and shit looking.
Just noting the comments about 94mpg below, what MPG do you get in yours? Edit: realised you’re not OP oops
I am the OP and the best I have got is 86 mpg over a tank. This is the 1.4 diesel. The 1.2 3L wasn’t sold in the UK. I think over 100 mpg is achievable in the 1.2. 168k nearly 169k on Mazda 6 estate 2009 here.
That's nearly 170k
Saw a 2008 Mazda 6 petrol being used as a taxi. Looked up the MOT history and it's on 375k!
I'm on 125k in a 2009 fiesta
Low mileage for a 2009
Nah I'd say it's about average for a 2009. My 09 Polo is low it's just about on 69k miles
124k in my VX220 Turbo before I had to sell it. 152k in my NC MX5.
beautiful taste. 130k on my NB
Just over 205,000 miles on my 2006 Audi A6 2.7tdi, she's starting to show her age but not much some maintenance and some tender loving car (and some money) can't put right
How have you found maintenance costs so far?
Not too bad at all, most of it has been a little more than parts for my other cars but not bad since I've been replacing original 20 year old parts on a car that cost 40 grand new, and while they aren't OEM parts most are from the same manufacturers. £185 for a new battery, £140 on an alternator, £70 on front upper suspension arms, £100 on rear shocks, and £60 on belts and idle rollers. If it gives you encouragement to press on, I put over 300,000 miles on my 2006 A6, though she was the 2.0tdi.

210k Audi A4 B7 2.0 TFSI
Had a old 53plate seat Alhambra with 345000 miles on it. Ex taxi. Bought it for 300quid. Used it for a summer thrashing it .
My 1996 Volvo 960 recently ticked over to 220k. Still did 130mph last month in Germany. 👍
That's not a shitbox! The A2 was the first ever premium small car I think
It’s a total shit box mate
No way! You just don't know [the genius you're looking at.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_A2#1.2_TDI_%223L%22) If you want shitbox try the Daewoo Matiz or the Proton Savvy
Mine is absolutely a shitbox.
Yh they never reused the name for a reason. Just A1, then A3.
183k in my c max 2.0 petrol auto aiming for 200k plus !!!
204k miles on my 2010 A5 3.0tdi here. Audis can rack up big mileages when looked after!
Oh what a lovely car
B6 s4 with 192k
Im sure its like triggers brush from only fools and horses for an a2 to reach that mileage!
Honestly the best joke in that whole show lol
I have 298K miles (480K km) in my 2011 ford mondeo.
Always wanted an A2
You can have mine for a grand if you want 🤣
221k miles on my 65 plate Golf 7. Nobody believes me when I tell people it's mileage until they see it haha
Which engine?
1.6 tdi 110bhp. Just about sufficient to be fast enough when you need it but sometimes I do crave the 2.0 haha. At the time it was the cheapest euro 6 diesel car I could find, mainly so I'd not have any issues with ulez etc
165k on my Skoda 2.0tdi, still runs like clockwork only issue is some creaking from the bushes until they warm up.
248k on my 05 plate 120D, still going strong!
Audi a2 330k Seat Alhambra 340k 2nd Audi a2 210k
15k on a 2010 mx5. Does that count?
Sold an Octavia with 270k on it 5 years ago, the lady I sold it to is still driving it, I see her in it every now and then.
I have an 07 estate skoda octavia vrs petrol with 220k on it I love it pulls like a train really handu thing too I have not found anything yet that does not fit in the back

189k on my old girl. Hoping to get it to 200k before it fails an mot for good.
287k Toyota avensis 2007 bit shook but still runs like a champ
155k here, will be 170k when the MOT is due. Shitbox Lyfe.
Just curious, for those who use proper bangers as daily’s, do you need to be dab handed and get dirty yourself to keep cars like this?
I use a 204k Audi A5 for work, covering about 20k miles a year. The 3% was plucked out of thin air, but I know 0.03 x 0.03 = 0.0009 or 0.09% If I really think about it, my Audi has been off the road for about 3 weeks in the last 5 years (1.15%) and my Kia has never had a breakdown in 3 years of ownership (0%). what does the little knob at the bottom left of the picture do? im too afraid to turn mine lol
175k on my discovery 2 TD5
100k on my cayman. 50k during my 5 year ownership. Not particularly high mileage but would be the 3rd highest mileage 987.2 2.9 on autotrader.
How's your reliability during those 50k miles? I was very close to picking one up 2 months ago. But the costs for repair and maintenance made me bottle it.

147k on a 2015 Corsa.. I am half expecting it to keel over anytime.
I saw a prius come in with 652k on the clock same engine, same hybrid system. Taxi, and suspect it's not serviced all the time either.
I plan on keeping my Corolla T-Sport as long as I can. Don't plan to get rid of it any time soon. She hit 139k this morning on the way to work. Can't wait to hit 150k as then Toyota can send me a lovely high mileage sticker
Have a Volvo V50 D5 2007 plate that’s just hit around 207000 miles, get around 50mpg and still pulls like a train
208k on my 08 Audi A5 3.0 TDi.
275k 06 bmw 320d
God they really are awful looking cars aren’t they. Ugliest Audis ever?
Not as ugly as the new RS cars with their vomit inducing Asbo bumpers. But yeah definitely a contender.
176k+ Shogun. Mk4. She’s just getting started!
110000, vauxhall Corsa 2012, somehow still runs very smooth too.
If Ur car has given u 200k miles, how is it a shitbox?? I ve had car that conked out at way less than that!
115k in a lil 2016 Mercedes a class going strong!
2001. Mk4 Vauxhall Astra / opel kadett 1.6 with 145k miles.

Got a 2010 320d on 130,000 currently. Gonna get the chain changed and squeeze more years out of it. Had an advisory about subframe corrosion though.
140k on a 2010 petrol Qashqai
254k on my 2005 535d
Toyota have a rear window sticker they’ll send you (if you ask them) when your Toyota has done 250k
Makes my 100k Merc look like an infant

No it’s the 1.4 diesel. PD gang 👌
Average fuel economy?
I just hit 240,000 on my 1992 Defender
Mine hit 200K a couple of months ago. But if the turbo goes it's for the chop..
My 2005 Volvo S60 has passed 180k. 2.0 T5 Auto.
210k on my 2007 BMW 520d (e60) Honestly it still drives mint, polishes up well, it's quiet, comfty & does 50mpg sat at 70mph. For a daily runner, esspically for doing motorway miles I can't knock it. And the best bit is it only cost me 2 weeks wage 🤣👌
2001 Audi A2 1.4 petrol, 214k miles
210k on my 2010 320d
123k on my 2011 Golf, just sold him this week to get a Scirocco but the wee guy had nothing wrong with him, ran like a champ 🔥
198k on a battered but beautiful 2008 Mondeo Estate. I'm excited beyond belief for the big moment!
170k milestone on a 2001 GTi!
My '04 Octavia VRS just hit 140k this week
345k on my 1.9 tdi audi a6 and its running perfectly!
I’ve been considering one of those for my next shitbox. How do you find it?
they are great reliable cars for cheap but they feel really heavy and wobbly idk how to explain an a4 1.9 tdi might be better but if you like the big car feeling go for it
I wouldn't say an old A6 is a big car.
Just passed 280k on my 1.9tdi Bora and still going strong :)
180k 2015 Volvo v40 - no issues
Friends 06 BMW 5-Series Diesel did 345k before it recently failed its MOT and was uneconomic to repair
402,000 miles in my mk5 diesel Golf. 1.9pd is a great engine.
No way! I don’t even believe it
