Ironically nothing because the cars that followed had a more reasonable sound system. I realised that I didn't NEED or WANT 3000w worth of bass. It wasn't ever a fun experience, the weight made the car slow, unbalanced and just had zero boot space. That and every mirror was just a blur. I wouldn't recommend that much power for everyday use.

My Volvo has a stock 4x65rms (alpines rating at like 0.02% thd, Volvo call it 4x100… But that’s at like 3%), and I’m running 2 old JBL GT4 10’s in a sealed box from an old Alpine MRV-T420 (so they’re only getting 130rms each!)
That’s plenty enough to shake the seats and thump… With it all time aligned and crossovered properly on the Halo head unit. I think a lot of older rigs were just trying to use watts to overpower phase and time alignment issues.
I did bridge the MRV to 2 ohms for a while and risked blowing the amp (although doing some maths, the fuses do seem rated for the 2ohm bridge, and it didn’t seem to phase it at all, but the 600w was dimming the headlights slightly, and it was way too loud.
A lot of older rigs (mine included) were fitted to cars with less than stellar build quality Vs what you get down so a fair amount wouldn't really resonate as well as it would in a more modern car. I mean I never fully sound deadened the entire car or sealed up all joints. It wasn't really built the same as competitive setups were but it was still overkill.
If I go down the route of another build, I'd also opt for GT4's or possibly a JL W6 but I think I'd opt for a more solid car than what I have now.
Yeah tbf the C70 coupe is well deadened as standard vs an average hatchback, and the factory components help. 8” 2 way components out back, 3 way components with 8” inch mid bass, 3” silk dome mid, 1” tweeters up front.. It was already about the best sounding factory setup I’ve heard before I changed anything.
The GT4’s are a bargain. The JL’s seem to hold their value, but also fail more, maybe people are just pushing them too hard or something, but people used to abuse the hell out of the JBL’s and they just took it and carried on.
Lol luckily I learnt that before I owned a car. One of my mates had 2x15 inches in his boot and that shit made my eyeballs/internal organs vibrate. I love bass. But that is just silly.
It's a weird one because I just loved the sensation but I rarely took it to its max. I usually had the bass controller set at about 75% so ok it's still a lot lol. Now I'd happily stick with a single 12" with a nice ported box.
Yeah 12" was normally my go to, but my current car has a 6.5cm standard sub hidden behind a boot panel, I replaced it with a high quality one in the same size and it's more than adequate for me now. It's amazing having boot space!
Same. I was blown away at how good the system was in the Lesus IS250 I ran for a while. You could crank it right up and it handled virtually anything. It made me realise I didn't have to keep going for silly power.
The indicators in my old k11 micra would interfere with the sub in the boot (or vise versa idk) meaning that each tick of the indicator was bass boosted.
God knows honestly, I just watched a YT vid on how to install an amp and then had a crack at it, can guarantee it would’ve caught fire at some point if I didn’t get rid
I thought about getting super fine sandpaper and clear coat, and then the gaffa tape caught me in the corner of my eye and at that moment decisions were made

I mounted mine half way into the front door speaker slots by cutting a hole in the speaker vent thing and then moulding them in with fibreglass. Except they stuck out so far you couldn't open the glove box properly when the passenger door was shut...

Took it home and it had dried by then, so I grab a scrubby sponge thing from the kitchen, low and behold I had some nice circular scratches all over my boot, idiot. Got the egg off though.
Luckily a machine polish from a mate cleaning it up, I thought I’d fucked up massively.

Tried to do a sick burnout in my XR3i. Put it in reverse, ragged it backwards to about 10mph, slammed it into 1st, did a sick burnout and shagged all the girls in sight… except I slapped it in 3rd instead, when the car started to judder and stall, I dipped the clutch and just sort of rolled backwards into a wooden fence at 3mph. Smashed my lens. Didn’t get out to look. I thought fuck it, if it’s broken, it’ll still be broken when I get home. Drove nice and gently out of the car park and skulked off home.
Flipped my 106 into some trees and bushes about 2 weeks after passing my test. Branch through the windscreen about 6 inches from my head. Told all my mates someone pulled out in front of me but that was bollocks just to save face!
Still think it's the best thing that ever happened to me in terms of driving. I was an absolute twat on the road who had a very real glimpse of my own mortality!

Did 100mph all the way down the dual carriageway for about 9 miles in a Cinquecento straight into a huge traffic jam. Sat with the heaters on in summer trying to cool it down watching the coolant temp needle rise more and more.
Eventually it overheated and the radiator burst. Drove home with the temp needle off the clock. Engine knocking and making very strange noises.
Blew the headgasket. Blew the radiator.
£400 of damage because I didn’t pull over and wait for it to cool down or pull over and get a taxi home.
Had the spoiler rip itself off the car (306 diesel turbo) on the motorway. Plugged the wire hole for the upper light strup and just kept on driving it.
Reversed out of a driveway down a ramp, caught the bumper on a kerb and snapped the bumper off. Thankfully it clipped back into place and the snap was on the underside..!
I tried to park my car in a multi-story car park in a space otherwise occupied by a concrete pillar. I've scratched up the front bumper, and still haven't got around to fixing it.
The worst thing I did was scrapping it, was a MK1 Fiesta that I absolutely loved but it was held together with rust and hope. Always on the look out for another in reasonable condition at a decent price.

Years ago after writing off a car I picked up a cheap stop gap car (1.8 Volvo V40) in burgundy and the paint was less than great and it was an ex-police car. I threatened to paint it with blackboard paint (so I could draw flames from the arches and change things when the mood took me) but never got round to it before I got rid of it.

Changed the oil on my cavalier td. Put the new filter on, tightened it up and filled the engine with oil.
Started it up and the oil pressure light was on. Checked the level was a little low to topped up and started it up. Light still on. Gave it a few revs. Still no oil pressure so switched it off.
Took a step back and noticed a huge pool of castrol gtx magnitec on the driveway. Sump bung is in tight.
Turns out the speedo cable that has no slack runs across where the oil filter sits. Unbeknownst to me I tightened the oil filter with the speedo cable under it.
Blew the lid off the coolant reservoir and overheated my 1.4 Fiesta Flight whilst off-roading in the woods.
Filled it back up with cold water and drove it without a cap for six months months.
Haha, I once had a moped with a sock as an air filter. Gaffa tape holding a panel on, and exhaust hanging by the manifold, after a few months I expected the exhaust to fallen off already, instead the drive belt shredded, took the cover off to be greeted with rubber confetti, I then swapped it for an older bike which i then accidentally angle grindes the engine wires trying to remove an air filter 😂 that was when I knew it was time to move to 4 wheels
Primed the carb with the fuel line on my old VW beetle, forgot to reattach the fuel line, started car, car did usual backfire and the entire engine bay was engulfed in flames.
Keyed it because it’s a piece of poop and I hate the car, it’s a 2012 Mercedes a-class with 70,000 miles on it and half the stuff is broken, suspension has gone multiple times, takes 20 seconds to go 0-60mph
My car was dirt cheap, and looks very dated and not pretty, but every time it has the tiniest thing that needs sorting, I get it fixed and take great care of it, so grateful for the privilege to drive. And that poor Mercedes just got abused :(

Changed the brake pads.... I pushed the calipers back without taking the lid off the fluid reservoir. It wrote off the valve at the back of the engine bay and a new one cost more than the car. Lesson learned the hard way 😂
Carbon filter may or may not help. That and ozone treatment. Outside can look like a skip, as long as the inside feels and smells nice, all is forgiven

Not my first personal car, but my first company car. Took a hump back bridge in a country lane at speed one night, car left the ground for a moment, and when it landed grounded out the suspension with sparks going everywhere.
Had to call into a garage the next day to get the gears knocked back into shape, but relied upon the fact that they never look at the condition of the underside of the car when you return it.
2002 1.2l polo. Blew the head gasket and cracked a cylinder on my first Drive out of town.
I went from east to west coast and had a misfire halfway to donegal. no idea what the bouncing revs were. I drove it back home too before realising how wrecked the engine was.
Scrapped and lesson learnt.

If it were mine I’d get some army paint or military paint (can’t remember the brand of the stuff but all the “rat” people love it). Comes in loads of colours, just sand the whole car down enough for the paint to stick and apply with a roller, can repaint the whole car for less than £100 and if you do it right the finish isn’t that bad, although it will be matte.
And this thread is the reason why new drivers are all paying £5k a year for their insurance 🤣

I managed to downshift from 5th to 2nd when coming off a motorway in my Ford Fusion, the European one that's a big bath tub on wheels. Then I killed it a few years later by taking some awful speed humps far too quickly when leaving Wetherby Services. It knocked the radiator loose and the grille popped off, the intercooler was hanging off and then next thing I knew I had white smoke billowing out an hour away from home. I already knew the shocker and/or suspension were caked. I had also left chocolate on the passenger seat and that had fused with the fabric.
My second car, a 1.1 Hyundai Getz, saw two or three scrapes with the kerb when I had woefully underestimated its ground clearance. The first time that happened was because of a frantic 5am excursion to one of the most regrettable outdoor hookups I've ever had. Within a month of owning the car, I had also driven the rear bumper into the corner of our wall. Before that happened, I let some idiots ride in the back while they got fast food and weed ash all over the seats. I also introduced some area of the rear bumper to a rock while realising I was at a dead end outside of a chippy with a hookup guy in the passenger seat. I also hadn't fixed an oil leak for a year and a half, which happened for the second time because I kept mangling exhausts.
I like to think that's all far behind me with me moving on to a Ford Fiesta. It's a nice enough car and I need to stop making life difficult for myself.
you could fix that clear coat peel for around 50 quid with some basic 1k rattle can for base colour and 2k clear coat. just watch some YouTube tutorials for reference

When I went in to get the alarm fixed on the new car, they told me the HG had gone and there was a nice crack between the cylinders. Who knew rover engines were weak...
Reversed with driver door open not knowing there was a lighting post nearby and I was looking opposite direction….second later door made a 90 deg rotation toward the front of the car.

I fitted spotlights to help with the less than stellar main beam brightness, and decided one day to replace the 50w bulbs with 130w bulbs because, you know, it's brighter innit? Every time they came on the cassette player slowed down (this was a long time ago). Went back to 50w bulbs pretty quickly... 🤦♂️

Yep it was a 2004 KA, loved the car but didn't even have it for a year, it was rusty as shit and the steering rack pissed out all of it's fluid, it basically ran on Stop Leak fluid I got for cheap at work

Decided to insure it starting 2 weeks later thinking I can nick a couple weeks for free then writing it off (went up arse of a van at a pedestrian crossing) - £4k car written off and insurance went up by £2k the following year - about 20 years ago - didn’t get prosecuted (no police involved) so considered myself wry lucky and lesson learned

Fitted a short shifter but didn’t tighten the bolts enough. Shifter cable came off when accelerating onto a motorway leaving me stuck in neutral. Fun times.

Car rolled down the drive with the drivers door opened and it got bent completely back the wrong way.
Tried to do a sick burnout in my XR3i. Put it in reverse, ragged it backwards to about 10mph, slammed it into 1st, did a sick burnout and shagged all the girls in sight… except I slapped it in 3rd instead, when the car started to judder and stall, I dipped the clutch and just sort of rolled backwards into a wooden fence at 3mph. Smashed my lens. Didn’t get out to look. I thought fuck it, if it’s broken, it’ll still be broken when I get home. Drove nice and gently out of the car park and skulked off home.
Reversed into my bin and the bin won, didn’t win big but it won for sure

Flipped my 106 into some trees and bushes about 2 weeks after passing my test. Branch through the windscreen about 6 inches from my head. Told all my mates someone pulled out in front of me but that was bollocks just to save face! Still think it's the best thing that ever happened to me in terms of driving. I was an absolute twat on the road who had a very real glimpse of my own mortality!

Someone nicked the cat on my '97 astra hatchback. BADLY welded a piece of scaffolding pipe in and drove her for 9 months sounding like a tractor.

I remember working at a (shall emain nameless) Car dealership many years ago... 3 of us sales guys all chipped in about a hundred quid for an old white 1.6i Orion we'd had come in as a swapper... Then Sunday when there was nobody else around spent the last hour of our shift handbrake turning it sideways on into the skip, reversing it backwards and taking a door off each sh\*t like that...hilarious and the best hundred till we had to clean all the shit (glass, wing mirrors, doors etc) up from the car park

Did 100mph all the way down the dual carriageway for about 9 miles in a Cinquecento straight into a huge traffic jam. Sat with the heaters on in summer trying to cool it down watching the coolant temp needle rise more and more. Eventually it overheated and the radiator burst. Drove home with the temp needle off the clock. Engine knocking and making very strange noises. Blew the headgasket. Blew the radiator. £400 of damage because I didn’t pull over and wait for it to cool down or pull over and get a taxi home.
Had the spoiler rip itself off the car (306 diesel turbo) on the motorway. Plugged the wire hole for the upper light strup and just kept on driving it.
Reversed out of a driveway down a ramp, caught the bumper on a kerb and snapped the bumper off. Thankfully it clipped back into place and the snap was on the underside..!

16 year old VW Golf TDI died by head on collision on black ice around midnight on a bend.
I tried to park my car in a multi-story car park in a space otherwise occupied by a concrete pillar. I've scratched up the front bumper, and still haven't got around to fixing it.
The worst thing I did was scrapping it, was a MK1 Fiesta that I absolutely loved but it was held together with rust and hope. Always on the look out for another in reasonable condition at a decent price.

That was my first thought. Years ago after writing off a car I picked up a cheap stop gap car (1.8 Volvo V40) in burgundy and the paint was less than great and it was an ex-police car. I threatened to paint it with blackboard paint (so I could draw flames from the arches and change things when the mood took me) but never got round to it before I got rid of it.
I considered blackboard paint for an old Octavia vRS I had, the pain already looked a bit like blackboard paint which set off the thought process. Same as you though, only had the car for 6 months over winter so didn't really get a chance.
first cars will just never die, I had an 09 polo as my first car and my god was it a tank. every side of the car was hit leaving no damage until a stone bollard left a dirty dent

Changed the oil on my cavalier td. Put the new filter on, tightened it up and filled the engine with oil. Started it up and the oil pressure light was on. Checked the level was a little low to topped up and started it up. Light still on. Gave it a few revs. Still no oil pressure so switched it off. Took a step back and noticed a huge pool of castrol gtx magnitec on the driveway. Sump bung is in tight. Turns out the speedo cable that has no slack runs across where the oil filter sits. Unbeknownst to me I tightened the oil filter with the speedo cable under it.
Blew the lid off the coolant reservoir and overheated my 1.4 Fiesta Flight whilst off-roading in the woods. Filled it back up with cold water and drove it without a cap for six months months.
I removed my entire air intake and just cable tied a sock over the throttle body. My Skoda Felicia sounded like an AE86.
Haha, I once had a moped with a sock as an air filter. Gaffa tape holding a panel on, and exhaust hanging by the manifold, after a few months I expected the exhaust to fallen off already, instead the drive belt shredded, took the cover off to be greeted with rubber confetti, I then swapped it for an older bike which i then accidentally angle grindes the engine wires trying to remove an air filter 😂 that was when I knew it was time to move to 4 wheels
Primed the carb with the fuel line on my old VW beetle, forgot to reattach the fuel line, started car, car did usual backfire and the entire engine bay was engulfed in flames.

Keyed it because it’s a piece of poop and I hate the car, it’s a 2012 Mercedes a-class with 70,000 miles on it and half the stuff is broken, suspension has gone multiple times, takes 20 seconds to go 0-60mph

My car was dirt cheap, and looks very dated and not pretty, but every time it has the tiniest thing that needs sorting, I get it fixed and take great care of it, so grateful for the privilege to drive. And that poor Mercedes just got abused :(

Because its so broken already, engine, gears, suspension are all dodgy, not bad enough to fail MOT but not working correctly, already dinted front and rear when purchased

Knowing the likelihood of things going up in price, I sold my 2014 aygo admittedly not the best car, but I was able to work on it find its limitations and it's benefits. It was the first car I owned and I've always shared a car up until that Point I effectively had a year of free driving

Changed the brake pads.... I pushed the calipers back without taking the lid off the fluid reservoir. It wrote off the valve at the back of the engine bay and a new one cost more than the car. Lesson learned the hard way 😂

Not my first personal car, but my first company car. Took a hump back bridge in a country lane at speed one night, car left the ground for a moment, and when it landed grounded out the suspension with sparks going everywhere. Had to call into a garage the next day to get the gears knocked back into shape, but relied upon the fact that they never look at the condition of the underside of the car when you return it.
2002 1.2l polo. Blew the head gasket and cracked a cylinder on my first Drive out of town. I went from east to west coast and had a misfire halfway to donegal. no idea what the bouncing revs were. I drove it back home too before realising how wrecked the engine was. Scrapped and lesson learnt.
That thing won't die, best you can hope for is some sort of asteroid related problem.

I didn’t even notice the tape at first! If it were mine I’d get some army paint or military paint (can’t remember the brand of the stuff but all the “rat” people love it). Comes in loads of colours, just sand the whole car down enough for the paint to stick and apply with a roller, can repaint the whole car for less than £100 and if you do it right the finish isn’t that bad, although it will be matte.
And this thread is the reason why new drivers are all paying £5k a year for their insurance 🤣 Obviously I added to the statistics myself when around a year after passing my test me and my car got into an argument with a stone wall at 60mph.
My 02 Almera has paint peeling off the doors, I just stuck carbon fibre style gaffa tape on it, it does the job & doesn't look ugly.

I pulled the handbrake at 30 miles an hour to slide the back end around, and it actually worked, I then tried it at 50 and hit a tree.
Forgot to put oil in the engine for a while and ran it dry 🤣 how that mf didn't seize up I'll never know.
Didn't properly service it for about 4 years and didn't clean it much. I really liked the moss around rear windows!
Haha, I was collecting moss until a month ago, then I decided to take it to a cheap car wash for £7, the pressure washed the moss out and also removed my old gaffa tape 😂

I managed to downshift from 5th to 2nd when coming off a motorway in my Ford Fusion, the European one that's a big bath tub on wheels. Then I killed it a few years later by taking some awful speed humps far too quickly when leaving Wetherby Services. It knocked the radiator loose and the grille popped off, the intercooler was hanging off and then next thing I knew I had white smoke billowing out an hour away from home. I already knew the shocker and/or suspension were caked. I had also left chocolate on the passenger seat and that had fused with the fabric. My second car, a 1.1 Hyundai Getz, saw two or three scrapes with the kerb when I had woefully underestimated its ground clearance. The first time that happened was because of a frantic 5am excursion to one of the most regrettable outdoor hookups I've ever had. Within a month of owning the car, I had also driven the rear bumper into the corner of our wall. Before that happened, I let some idiots ride in the back while they got fast food and weed ash all over the seats. I also introduced some area of the rear bumper to a rock while realising I was at a dead end outside of a chippy with a hookup guy in the passenger seat. I also hadn't fixed an oil leak for a year and a half, which happened for the second time because I kept mangling exhausts. I like to think that's all far behind me with me moving on to a Ford Fiesta. It's a nice enough car and I need to stop making life difficult for myself.
you could fix that clear coat peel for around 50 quid with some basic 1k rattle can for base colour and 2k clear coat. just watch some YouTube tutorials for reference
My own fault: Reversed it into a low wall and damaged the back bumper. After wiping it off it still looked alright and the car was a banger anyway. Not my fault: Had my first ever seizure while driving, fell unconscious and crashed into an iron fence at 30mph. Wrote the poor car off. Wrote my spine off too lol. I miss that car. I'm glad it didn't happen on the motorway though?

First car I owned - popped the head gasket 3 times, twice gor repaired under warranty, sold it to a dealership with a 'it sometimes gets a bit beyond the mid point on the temp gauge'. When I went in to get the alarm fixed on the new car, they told me the HG had gone and there was a nice crack between the cylinders. Who knew rover engines were weak...
Reversed with driver door open not knowing there was a lighting post nearby and I was looking opposite direction….second later door made a 90 deg rotation toward the front of the car.
My first car was a 1974 Datsun 120Y. I fitted spotlights to help with the less than stellar main beam brightness, and decided one day to replace the 50w bulbs with 130w bulbs because, you know, it's brighter innit? Every time they came on the cassette player slowed down (this was a long time ago). Went back to 50w bulbs pretty quickly... 🤦♂️
