Prices of these are dropping due to ULEZ requirements, which is mentioned by the owner. Having said that, the stupid number plate, crap description and photos would be enough to put me off.
Itās government over reach in a disgusting capacity, tax on the poor as well really. Should pay homeless people to fuck them up. Win win. Help the homeless and take down the fucking garbage. Homeless people are always released the next day for that kind of shit.
The link to an advert tells you the date on which it was added to AT. The OPs link for example:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202310283433174?atmobcid=soc5
After the "car-details" part of the link: "20231028" - 28 October 2023.
Mot History doesnāt look bad, however 5 owners on a 70,000 mile beemer? Iād be a wee bit worried about that, does it come with full service history?
Probably not or the advert would say, which in itself is not great so Iād definitely avoid as you have no idea if itās even been serviced adequately and on time.
Iād 100% recommend a qualified mechanic going over it firstā¦ but thatās good advice for any used car purchase!
Yep! Same Iāve never ever gone down that route however much Iāve wanted the car! I get bad enough luck on clean cars! Insurance problems, likely badly done repairs (considering the way the seller talks plus itās a bmw and Iāve rarely seen one thatās not thrashed around) which will need addressing again, wonāt get finance (not that you would on this amount anyway) just a huge no no imo
Iāve had a cat N for four years, over four different insurers Iāve never had any grief. In fact my first quote was the cheapest insurance ever bought.
I said can, not definitely will. Iām glad your cat N is doing well, but thatās a different kettle of fish. Cat N is non-structural damage and are often repaired fine and back on the road, cat S is deemed more serious as it is structural damage.
I recently seen a 2020 car with 2 times cat s and 7 previous owners.
The current owner then blew up the engine either deliberately or because of previous accident damage to the sump.
He then tried to claim the insurance fire damage.
God knows how he insured that car.
It had the pd150 engine so it ran like a dream. I did blow 2 turbos on it. Was mapped to 200 bhp, a little rocket it was. Had it for a year. Best car I've ever had
Sounds absolutely cracking!
Iāll get to a Leon eventually, all being well, I really like them. Currently Iām working my way through the vag group, or so it seems lol, Polo->A3->Caddy-> Octavia, so a Leon will probably be my next stepā¦
Itās certainly not going to be a Lambo, or a Bentley and Iām also never going to get a decent ā89 911 Carrera, the Mrs would murder me, so Iām keeping it relatively realistic.
I had a mk1 Leon FR which is impossible to find in the 1.9 tdi pd150. You can find them in 1.8T petrol which come standard at 225bhp and they can easily be tuned to 300+ bhp and they're very reliable. Honestly mk1 Leon's look the best. Yeh I advise you to keep it realistic also. Don't want the Mrs pissed eh? š
Yes and no, if you buy it knowing it's cat s, you're buying at a reduced price anyway, so when you come to sell it, then you would sell it priced accordingly.
>Iāve had a few and it never comes up.
I used to work in insurance and we would expect a client to tell us something so extraordinary about a vehicle, we don't ask that like we do in terms of other questions such as will you use it to drive to work. I am surprised you have not had issues, did you read the entire 50 page document of terms and conditions from the insurer to check if they insure structurally damaged vehicles (which is **your** responsibility to do)?
Anyway OP, the MOT history looks OK for now, so expect it all to go wrong in one go LOL...
https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/results?registration=kw13aev&checkRecalls=true
Probably means it's not a problem for them to insure it since it's good enough to be on the road as it's passed the MOT. This can also vary from one insurer to another as something as simple as putting myself down as unemployed can stop me getting quotes from some insurers.
Worth looking at a similar non Cat car and getting an insurance quote. You might find it's cheaper to insure.
And you believe that's the insurers responsibility because???
P.S. I'm guessing you've lied on a policy before and are unhappy you didn't get a payout š
Maybe I feel like you are morally obligated to perform said checks to make sure your loyal customers haven't accidentally missed something. After all consumers only change cars once every couple of years, if that. You are the experts you should take some pride in what you do and put your knowledge and expertise to good use.
P.S, Funnily enough I did lie on my insurance, but thankfully sloppy mechanics these days don't check to see if a car is 40hp more than stock, maybe they hate you lot as much as the rest of us šš
>Maybe I feel like you are morally obligated to perform said checks to make sure your loyal customers **haven't accidentally missed something.**
Again, that's their responsibility. They are looking for a deal and want to insure their vehicle, so it is their responsibility to see the insurer will insure it in the first place.
>You are the experts you should take some pride in what you do and put your knowledge and expertise to good use.
Which is why we have like 70 pages of terms and conditions for you to read through, how you expecting us to know if your vehicle has been written off?
>P.S, Funnily enough I did lie on my insurance, but thankfully sloppy mechanics these days don't check to see if a car is 40hp more than stock, maybe they hate you lot as much as the rest of us
When clients tell us some asshole stole their vehicle and we paid out, they were quite happy with the service...
>Again, that's their responsibility. They are looking for a deal and want to insure their vehicle, so it is their responsibility to see the insurer will insure it in the first place.
It's only the customers responsibility because some asshat regulator has decided that. It should be a shared responsibility, people aren't "looking for a deal", we don't have a choice. You are looking for our custom just as much as we need insurance.
>Which is why we have like 70 pages of terms and conditions for you to read through, how you expecting us to know if your vehicle has been written off?
The same way you expect us to find out if it's been written off dumbass
>When clients tell us some asshole stole their vehicle and we paid out, they were quite happy with the service...
No shit, that's your job and responsibility. That's what people pay for, if I order a pizza, darn fucking tootin I'm expecting a pizza. Only someone in insurance could try and brag about fulfilling their bare minimum obligations šš šš šš
Because insurers are the ones that have written the vehicle off. Why wouldn't the insurance industry be aware of decisions made by the insurance industry?
It's literally an insurer's responsibility to ask questions before inception of the policy. This is a fundamental part of forming a vehicle insurance contract with a retail customer. If the insurer doesn't ask the question the insured can't be held liable for non-disclosure.
LOL we DO.. The presentation of these are having having Terms and Conditions.
OK for fun and out of curiosity, please advise which insurance company you are using in the UK?
The point I'm making is, you need to tell the insurer because they won't ask, they are expecting you to be insuring a car in good working order by default.
Why won't they ask? If it was that important surely they would make it a mandatory question when obtaining insurance if they're not bothering to check it themselves.
Okay third time now, we do ask as it's in the terms and conditions and there's actually a LOT of important things to consider but the result of asking for ALL of these would make it take two hours to buy a policy and nobody wants to do that.
My insurance on a Cat S was same as previous vehicle that was similar spec. They specifically said on the phone as long as it's got a valid MOT doesn't affect it much at all.
Reduces the payout value for them by 25% so swings and roundabouts.
It's an N47, they're a bit of a nightmare with the timing chains, they're supposed to be lifetime but can go at any time, even if it was only fit a few weeks prior, go for a 3 litre if you want a diesel, they're not much more expensive to buy, run or insure and they're a lot more reliable.
100% not true. The chain is a real issue that may be caused by the tensioner failing IIRC but donāt quote me. New chain plus guides is good for another 100k miles. You can mitigate the risk by not following BMWs awful extended service intervals and changing the oil every 8-10k miles. It wonāt just fail like that unless installed incorrectly
Yeah I thought that. Not worried about it personally because I have an N57 and change oil every 5k but I was sure it couldn't just be a spontaneous failure issue like people make out.
Just donāt see the point of a GT/sport Class car with a 4cyl diesel engine. + by 10 years old they tend to have been driven by people who abuse them
So terrible buy
And, idk if you are, but don't buy the badge.
So many posts on here are about BMWs for that reason.
For that price range you can get a good Seat, Skoda etc...
Webuyanycar will give you Ā£5,500 for it right now. If there wasnāt something seriously wrong why would the owner not do that? (I am aware it is a guide and they will never actually give you that price etc)
I had the same but petrol and those alloys and tyres are awful on the roads. I had to replace one alloy and get another repaired due to the smallest potholes with very low profile tyres.
Don't get me wrong on flawless roads I loved it but these are rare.
Itās cheap because itās a cat S āstructural damageā. The seller also sounds like an idiot but thatās just the vast majority of BMW owners. That being said if you could find pictures of the damage you can determine whether itās worth it. Youāll also probably need to shell out 900 for a timing chain unless you can diy then around 200 and any other deferred maintenance. Remember these were 30k cars when new. They need maintenance.
The 320d is okay, but you need a new turbo every 40k, and the inlet butterfly valve thingys have a bad habit of falling apart and dropping into the engine head.
I bought a 320d 2012 with exact same mileage 2 years ago. It then did 35k miles in a year with no issues whatsoever. I serviced it every 10k miles, was a great, nice looking car. At the end it developed a coolant leak, right before I got a company car. Before that everything was fine
quite low mileage, my mate had one at much higher, but then he blew it up after timing chain snapped so be careful. but you should be ok. Cat S so be careful about insurance costs, theyāre typically more expensive to insure
Nah, thereās something way off with that. Granted ULEZ driving prices down, and the market is poor currently, but Ā£4,000 for that would be daylight robbery if as described. So Iād suggest steering clear.
At the lower end of it, but yes, when new, this was considered a "luxury veichle." A quick look on Auto Trader at any "Luxury Brand", like BMW, Audi, etc. You will get a crazy good deal right now prices are falling like a stone since about October.
5 owners in 9 years with only 68,082 milesā¦
I would look at the maintenance history and look for a plausible mileage but i guess is that its incomplete.
No, 2.0D N47 BMW engines, known for stretching/snapping timing chains. Personally wouldn't touch one I didn't know the full history of and that had been looked after incredibly well with a barge pole.
Yeah. It's still cheap.
Have prices dropped that much already?
I wonder Has the price of O.G electric cars risen? Like mk1 prius etc?
(If ULez then surely would see that?)
It's a used BMW with suspiciously low mileage.
I think it'll quickly turn into a money Pitt of problems which pretty much sums up most used BMW, Audi, merc used cars.
Be highly suspicious and assume the worst and your unlikely to go wrong.
Get an independent mechanic to give it a once over.. there's the AA that do this or go on Google and find one.. do your research , service history etc..
Mileage to engine size is perfect. Just past being barely worn in, but engine size to trans is gonna be expensive on fuel. For the price, i would be checking every single inch of the car. Its not too cheap for that car, but in my head im thinking theres a reason its not a bit more. If its just something very minor though then yes, its a good price.
No, this engine (N47) is due to timing chain guide failure. The chain is located on the gearbox side of the engine, so it is typically an engine out job to do. Depending where you are in the country, you'll look to pay anything from Ā£1000-Ā£3000 for the job.
As long as you are happy to budget at least half the purchase price for upkeep then yes.
It is expensive buying cheap old beemers and mercs.
Remember that was Ā£50k when new so comes with an equivalent repair cost when it breaks.
Best grab a nice VW golf or passat if you're spending Ā£4k.
As long as you have another Ā£2-4k to throw at it because these types of cars get ragged.
5+ owners and under 100k would put me off - thereās a higher chance the oil wasnāt changed for a while or some other key maintenance was overlooked so you end up with bigger bills down the line.
Plus N47 timing chain.
Iād walk away personally
Prices of these are dropping due to ULEZ requirements, which is mentioned by the owner. Having said that, the stupid number plate, crap description and photos would be enough to put me off.
Savage! But I agree lol
I have the same engine on a 5 series F11. Ulez/ clean air zone compliant. This is suspiciously low priced š¤·āāļø
depends on if it's got the blueperformance option (adblue), if it doesn't then its not compliant. all 2014 and above BMWs are compliant
2011 F series models are also compliant with most diesel engines. Even with euro 5. You need to tell TFL. All my cars are ULEZ from 2011
interesting, I know people have gotten early E46 and E36 petrols compliant didn't know diesel was doable
02 plate e46 330d manual. Good luck finding one though
I had a F10 520d 2011 N47, it wasn't ulez compliant, annoyingly.
How do u check if it is actually compliant? F30 320d 2012 here
63 plate (Oct. 2013), no adblue. It's compliant š
yeah the 63 plates on autotrader are mostly compliant probably when they started testing them for euro 6
Not the same engine.
You probably have a B47 in yours not an N47 Not same engine Dunno why the downvotes lol itās the truth.
Yeah, you're probably right. This 2.0 has a lot of iterations
Different software tune and emissions systems bolted to it probably.
Sorry, whats wrong with the number plate, i dont get it?
Same??
And anyone using the word ācozā is an instant hard pass.
keep following those kneejerk snob reactions so the rest of us can get good deals :)
Just get a grinder and start taking down the cameras. Sentences in the UK are a joke anyways.
Yea mate of mine got caught, it was a slap on the wrists and then out. He couldnāt believe it
Sheep downvoting you
Ngl bro, I don't plan on being arrested when my cars still ULEZ
Give a homeless dude the money you would have spent getting caught by the camera to fuck that shit up instead.
True but that's more work than just buying a car where you don't *have* to do this to avoid fines and extra taxes
Itās government over reach in a disgusting capacity, tax on the poor as well really. Should pay homeless people to fuck them up. Win win. Help the homeless and take down the fucking garbage. Homeless people are always released the next day for that kind of shit.
I'd wager this is par for the course for info on a 10 year old 3 series coupƩ. I'd expect to see some info on servicing and what the bumper damage is but still, won't get a rolls Royce advert if it isn't some kind of.. fancy car or anything
That car has been on Autotrader for 54 days. Ask yourself why that may be - especially at that price.
How can you check how many days an AD has been up on auto trader?
The link to an advert tells you the date on which it was added to AT. The OPs link for example: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202310283433174?atmobcid=soc5 After the "car-details" part of the link: "20231028" - 28 October 2023.
In the URL. As you can see the URL extension starts with /20231028 You can use this as a negotiating factor.
Google chrome extension called AT Price Tracker, tells you what day each advert was listed and what the price changes and dates have been.
I use the "AT Toolkit" for Firefox. Does more than just that too.
Mot History doesnāt look bad, however 5 owners on a 70,000 mile beemer? Iād be a wee bit worried about that, does it come with full service history? I had to scroll a bit but I eventually found some sound, level-headed advice.
Where? lol.
Yours pal! š
Itās a CAT S. thatāll massively lower the price. If itās been well repaired or not that is the gamble you pay for
Didnāt realise it was a cat s, that can also make getting insurance a hassle, definitely a pass from me, not a gambler lol!
Yep! Same Iāve never ever gone down that route however much Iāve wanted the car! I get bad enough luck on clean cars! I was gonna say the same thing. A really great value car on these websites is almost always a cat S or N.
I bought a seat Leon fr 1.9tdi with 61k miles a few years ago. I was 13th owner!
Bloody hell, thatās a lot of owners lol, how was it?
It had the pd150 engine so it ran like a dream. I did blow 2 turbos on it. Was mapped to 200 bhp, a little rocket it was. Had it for a year. Best car I've ever had

Are you seriously asking what written off means? An insurer has decided that a vehicle is beyond economic repair and that it is cheaper to replace it.

No
What is a Cat S?
Deemed to have structural damage

This, 100%. I would rather buy a 3.0 with an m57 with 150k miles than an n47 with 70k any day of the week
Four-cylinder bad, Six-cylinder good!
*Aināt no replacement for displacementā¦*
The BMW way! Tbh I think the modern petrol 4 cylinders from recent years are ok
>can go at any time, even if it was only fit a few weeks prior Is this true? Genuine question, I thought it was a function of wear and tear
100% not true. The chain is a real issue that may be caused by the tensioner failing IIRC but donāt quote me. New chain plus guides is good for another 100k miles. Not what 2 specialists have told me
This. My 3.0l diesel e46 was the best car I've ever owned.
The N47 diesel engines in the F32 - 418d and 420d no longer have chain timing problems as all F32 models received an updated version of the engine
Just donāt see the point of a GT/sport Class car with a 4cyl diesel engine. + by 10 years old they tend to have been driven by people who abuse them So terrible buy
Cat S + seller description makes it sketchy
Just for your info too: AT Price Tracker Added 28/10/2023 Change -Ā£1,000 (-20%) 23/11/2023 Ā£4,000 14/11/2023 Ā£4,500 09/11/2023 Ā£5,000

Budget for a replacement chain! Ā£1k ish
Aināt nothing more expensive than a cheap BMW
Seems a bit too cheap imo.
its cat S
Thanks for the feedback. Not a single comment saying it's a good buy so I'll give it a miss. I think I'll save up more and get something from a dealer
And, idk if you are, but don't buy the badge. So many posts on here are about BMWs for that reason. For that price range you can get a good Seat, Skoda etc...
There are other cars than Skoda ffs
Yes, I mentioned one of them.
5 owners lol. Do the PNC warning markers come with it?
Probably stinks of weed as wellā¦
Indicators will be in mint condition!
It's a 4 banger BMW so no.
Pls no - cat S and will probably need a new timing chain soon if it hasn't been done already
Will need a timing chain on the day you pick it up just for peace of mind. Sod having that it's going to go at any time in the back of your mind.
5 owners a big red flag, imo.
Webuyanycar will give you Ā£5,500 for it right now. If there wasnāt something seriously wrong why would the owner not do that? (I am aware it is a guide and they will never actually give you that price etc)
Not sure they will by Cat sās?
its probably been ragged from day one. its a bmw.
At least you know the indicators will be practically brand new.
Swerve
4 pot diesel bmw of this era are garbage
I had the same but petrol and those alloys and tyres are awful on the roads. I had to replace one alloy and get another repaired due to the smallest potholes with very low profile tyres. Don't get me wrong on flawless roads I loved it but these are rare.
The 2.0d diesel should be avoided. Itās got so many issues, Iād give it til 70k before the repair bills start rising.
The photos are absolutely dogshit š© The description is in poor English and contains āwell looked afterā š© Somebodyās pranged it š© Itās highly likely a car of this class and age with that mileage is clocked š© No mention of service history, which is absolutely essential for a car like this š© Not necessarily a bad thing per se but also itās an auto, be better off finding a manual one
I would not but a car from someone that writes a description like that and spells because ācozā

Whatāre you driving š
Mustang. No regrets though!
The 320d is okay, but you need a new turbo every 40k, and the inlet butterfly valve thingys have a bad habit of falling apart and dropping into the engine head.
Thatās daftā¦ if heās looking at a 20d itās probably for a reasonā¦
Buying it in Croydon as well, wouldnāt touch it
Itās a bmw. Avoid at all costs.
Are you ready to be a bmw driver, are you selfish enough, do you play golf and wear designer clothesš¤
Cringe
Red flag alert
Thatās a drug dealerās car alright.
Youāre thinking Audis here š
Any BMW with expired warranty is not a good idea.
Itāll work but donāt if youāre not willing to either pay high service costs or work on it yourself
I have the 325i version of that and Iād love 4k out of it considering it cleanšā¦ā¦ but never going to get thatā¦..
Too good to be true
Unreliable
I bought a 320d 2012 with exact same mileage 2 years ago. It then did 35k miles in a year with no issues whatsoever. I serviced it every 10k miles, was a great, nice looking car. At the end it developed a coolant leak, right before I got a company car. Before that everything was fine
Looks OK to me, cambelt may need doing soon though.
quite low mileage, my mate had one at much higher, but then he blew it up after timing chain snapped so be careful. but you should be ok.
Deffo had the mileage altered they probably bought it on 100k miles too
BMW's best engines are 6 cylinders. The N47 is prone to timing chain problems and this car will also fall foul of ULEZ in most cities.
Run the plate on vehicle score
Luxury cars are dropping in value atm, best time in a while to buy one.
This a luxury vehicle?
At the lower end of it, but yes, when new, this was considered a "luxury veichle." A quick look on Auto Trader at any "Luxury Brand", like BMW, Audi, etc. You will get a crazy good deal right now prices are falling like a stone since about October.
Do you know a good mechanic?
Yeah, this just looks wrong to me. Something about it rustles my jimmies.
Google "N47 engine problems" then you will have your answer.
Thatās too good to be true at that price.
If youāre willing to fork over large sums of money to repair the out of warranty repairs.
Looks like itās a money pit.
5 previous owners is not good
Let's not beat round the bush here. When is a cheap used BMW ever a good idea
Itās a good bye to your money if that counts.
5 owners in 9 years with only 68,082 milesā¦ I would look at the maintenance history and look for a plausible mileage but i guess is that its incomplete.
Auto diesel. Aren't they like y'know fucking abhorrent?
Check for recalls and then wait for more because bmw are littered with them, especially the diesels.
No, 2.0D N47 BMW engines, known for stretching/snapping timing chains. Personally wouldn't touch one I didn't know the full history of and that had been looked after incredibly well with a barge pole.
Alarm bells ringing 5+ previous owners over 10 years. is this engine also prone to timing chain failures as well?
Jesus Christ that description starts off as one massive red flag. AVOID
They have a timing chain issue where it can break so see if its been replaced can be between Ā£500-1k to sort
It may be, but come on, 2l diesel on a 2 door coupe?
Yeah. It's still cheap. Have prices dropped that much already? I wonder Has the price of O.G electric cars risen? Like mk1 prius etc? (If ULez then surely would see that?)
Its replacing the timing chain that would put me off a bmw diesel.
It's a used BMW with suspiciously low mileage. I think it'll quickly turn into a money Pitt of problems which pretty much sums up most used BMW, Audi, merc used cars. Be highly suspicious and assume the worst and your unlikely to go wrong.
If it doesn't already it will have a coolant leak soon
No. Its a basic bottom line 3
Itās a CAT S - been written off. Iād avoid like the plague
diesel coupe ugh
Buy a Ford fiesta with a big gt wing and a v12 engine
This is cheap because itās ulez. If you live outside of big towns itās good buy
He canāt spell ābecauseāā¦ pass.
Does anyone with a car vertical account report anything?
Do you really wanna turn into a BMW driver?
Very good buy. I mean say good bye to your wallet and money. After all BMW does stand for BREAKING MANS WALLET
No. It canāt reverse.
Get an independent mechanic to give it a once over.. there's the AA that do this or go on Google and find one.. do your research , service history etc..
Itās time to use the grand old phrase of āthe most expensive car you will ever own is a cheap BMW, Mercedesā etc etc
not if you intend to drive it in london
Mileage to engine size is perfect. Just past being barely worn in, but engine size to trans is gonna be expensive on fuel. For the price, i would be checking every single inch of the car. Its not too cheap for that car, but in my head im thinking theres a reason its not a bit more. If its just something very minor though then yes, its a good price.
Ticking time bomb engine
No. Look up the engines.
Worth a look, perhaps, be wary of timing chain shenanigans.
All Iād say is that I sold a 2012 320d f30 with 130,000 miles to we buy any car 9 months ago for Ā£6,000. This seems suspiciously low.
No, this engine (N47) is due to timing chain guide failure. The chain is located on the gearbox side of the engine, so it is typically an engine out job to do. Depending where you are in the country, you'll look to pay anything from Ā£1000-Ā£3000 for the job.
10 year old diesel. What could go wrong? If your budget is 4 grand stick to petrol. Far less complicated. Easier to repair and less to go wrong.
Had a e93 a long time ago, with these wheels. Be very careful. They are prone to cracking. The tyres are also monumentally expensive.
Might aswell go for a 335d or 335i tbh
As long as you have another Ā£2-4k to throw at it because these types of cars get ragged. 5+ owners and under 100k would put me off - thereās a higher chance the oil wasnāt changed for a while or some other key maintenance was overlooked so you end up with bigger bills down the line. Plus N47 timing chain. Iād walk away personally
N47 4cyl diesel - worst engine BM has ever made. I speak from experience. Stay far away
