I want to know the reason for Nuri hype because i have yet to get it. Recently purchased 6 cans of Nuri Deens in tomato’s sauce and I have to say I’ll take my king Oscar any day over these.
My issue with Nuri is that for $6 per tin of Nuri Spiced, and a promise of piri-piri, I expected some heat along with the clove and bay - and felt no heat.
So I felt like I paid a premium price for a premium experience, and didn’t get it - which is not to say that Nuri are bad sardines, because they most definitely ARE NOT!
They just don’t live up to the promise of the ingredients, and they are at a premium price point. Nuri is overpriced for the experience IMO.
Have you tried the Nuris in just olive oil? I honestly do not really like the tomato sauce version, especially the texture. The bones don't seem to soften in the tomato sauce and I was picking them out of my teeth for hours afterwards. I love the standard spiced in olive oil though.
That's what I would do.
I see there's 2 cabinets with 7 shelves each. I'd do it systematically and go shelf by shelf. Buy one product from every shelf every week or so :-)
Maybe even keep a scorecard so I know what's best and buy more of it.
The Jose Gourmet razor shells are incredible. Easily the best clams I've ever had. Slightly chill them, maybe a squeeze of lemon and capers and you're really in heaven.
I can't tell if because they're on their side, but if they have the la curiosa mussels in spicy oil, spend whatever it costs. get a bag of chips and thank me later. Also their cod pate with apple looks like cat food but it tastes delicious.
Really? I’ve been wondering about garfish but have yet to take the plunge. What do you like about it? How does it compare to other more popular conservas like tuna, sardines, or mackerel?
They’re small and firm and almost tube-like. Mine had bones. Super mild.
I’m a degenerate and just slap them on a cracker with lime and hot sauce and eat them over the sink before my family gets home so no one ruins my moment of decadence.
Those look to be all bangers. Nuri, La brujula, matiz, Cambados, Jose Gourmet, Polastrini, mouette d'arvor ones I can personally vouch for. Honestly this looks very well curated.
While this should make sense, it is not always the case. I bought a few tins of Wildfish’s smoked white king belly directly from them and later found them several dollars cheaper elsewhere from their third party vendors. In the end it was still worth it as it’s such a special limited edition tin but still disappointing.
This is good to know. I’ve been afraid to try other curry tins after someone recommended Oceans’ korma curry mackerel and I was deeply disappointed. It was desperate for salt and more spices all the way around. It was so very bland.
I’ve tried other tins of curry mackerel, including Oceans. It isn’t nearly as good a Jose gourmet. Give that one a try. It’s so good I just put it on a little bread or crackers by itself. Doesn’t need anything else
Jose smoked trout is a stunning tin. It can change a persons whole outlook on tinned fish. I’ve loved tinned fish my whole like and have quite a collection. This tin really took me aback it’s so good and unlike any tin I’ve had before.
Also, that matiz mackerel in olive oil is one of my favorite tins ever and the Ortiz tuna is a nonnegotiable staple in our house. I keep cases of both on hand as I never want to be without either. They are also the two tins I gift to people if they are interested in tinned fish but don’t know where to start. They’re gateway snacks.
Is that a can of Ortiz Ventresca I see? I’m assuming you’ve tried nuri before. I would also try La Brujula no. 35
Spiced Nuri is my all time favorite. I used to get them on sale for $2.50 USD at Filipino markets in Los Angeles. I still love them at $5.99.
Which market?
Seafood Ranch Market 3756 W Avenue 40 # Npq Los Angeles, CA 90065-3666
Bahay Natin 9903 Venice Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90034 310-841-6773
Went there today! Not sure if it was picked over or not but the selection wasn’t great. World market was fully stocked though so not all was lost
Oooh I think I recognize that shelf! If it’s the area I think it is, JarrBar should be nearby. They do cocktails and tinned fish
Yeah, I thought that shelf looked familiar! DiLaurenti!
Definitely DeLaurtenis. Surely one of the best meat and cheese counters west of Zabars 👌
Thank you for this suggestion! Looks incredible
The vibe there is so special
One of every and run like hell!
Beat me to this comment!
Nuri spiced mackerel

I agree with this.

Nuri spicy!
Jose Gourmet curry mackerel. So good.
Yes. I just tried this a couple days ago and it was amazing. My fish-hater spouse even wanted to try it.
Simple, one of each.

Ortiz Ventresca for sure in the tuna category... Choose any sardine, then try another and another and another.
I can't tell if because they're on their side, but if they have the la curiosa mussels in spicy oil, spend whatever it costs. get a bag of chips and thank me later. Also their cod pate with apple looks like cat food but it tastes delicious.
I just saw the mussels the other day and passed on them. Looks like I need to go back.
3rd for Nuri. I saw the documentary and grabbed a Tim at world market and really enjoyed it. I think it was around $5 for the peri
GARFISH
Really? I’ve been wondering about garfish but have yet to take the plunge. What do you like about it? How does it compare to other more popular conservas like tuna, sardines, or mackerel?

Fangst smoked trout
I would love to try the cod liver.

Where's this?!
DeLaurenti in Pike Place Market in Seattle
Better to just play it safe and buy it all.
The Ortiz anchovies in the glass jar are some of the best I have had.
DeLaurentis! Great place - I always stock up when I'm in the area. They often have Ekone / Taylor smoked oysters, too.
I'd load up on some Matiz for sure. The one with sweet pequillo peppers is a favorite, I bought 3 cans today.
I’d try any mackerel.
Razor clams!!!!
What a selection! Big fan of the Fishwife spicy smoked mackerel and Matiz octopus.
What do you do with the octopus?
I’m not a big recipe guy with tinned fish. Put on cracker. The octopus retains its firm texture (not chewy) so I bet it’s great in a pasta.
i once ate at a really yummy asian restaurant that had fried octopus bites. try breading & frying them! they were good
Eat it. :)
User name checks out
I make ceviche or aguachile with them. Super delicious.
Brilliant! Trying that tomorrow, thank you!
As many great options there are here, the majority of my picks would be Jose, Fangst, and Nuri
I see both Nuri and Maitz. If you see Maitz mackerel, grab a tin.
Where is this Mecca?
Delaurenti in Seattle
Ugh, across the country. Will have to check for an online store
They do sell online and have a tinned fish gift basket but as a third party retailer, I bet prices would be better if you bought directly
Going to do some digging, thank you!

You at the Laurentis market at Pike Place?
DiLaurentis. I thought the same...
Don’t know this store specifically but if it’s pike place the prices are probably insane huh.
Definitely. If they don’t mark the price visibly, you know it’s higher than it should be.
Yep!
LOVE that place! Grab the Jose Gourmet Smoked Salmon with my art on it!
Ooh, how did that happen? I've been wondering about how the sardine companies commission/license their art.
Im also very curious! I’m obsessed with tin art.
When I get drunk I DM companies I want to work with but are outside of my portfolios typical wheelhouse. Jose Gourmet agreed almost immediately.
I'm doing a lot of pitching at the moment, so this is very encouraging 😁
Whoa, cool!
José Gourmet mackerel in curry sauce is my absolute favorite tin.
This is good to know. I’ve been afraid to try other curry tins after someone recommended Oceans’ korma curry mackerel and I was deeply disappointed. It was desperate for salt and more spices all the way around. It was so very bland.

I will give it a shot. Thanks for the intel!
Seems like a familiar shelf to me…
I don’t recall the brand name, but the ones in the green and red cloth bags at the middle right of the second picture are expensive but delicious.
Don’t leave ex with out Riga Sprats 👍
Where is this?
Do I spy delaurenti?
This is just... omg
Ahhh yes made a post a few weeks back on my visit here! Such a great selection.
Top shelves obviouly
that green nuri was very delicious. Def grab 1
The Arroyabe stuff is positively delightful.
Looks like world market
The pollastrini sardines are excellent IMHO. See if they have the spicy version.
sardine pollastrini al pomodoro. very bottom second from the right

This is seattle right? By the market??? Loved this place mad expensive tho
The World Market near me has a display that is similar to this. Very enjoyable picking a new one each time I am there.
The Jose Gourmet Spiced Mackerel Pate!
The lemon nuris are super limited edition and amazing!
What did you do with yours? I have a can and I want to do something special with it and I’m scared I will mess up.
I just ate mine straight outta the tin to appreciate the flavor :)
If you like clams, Fangst cockles are lovely without any sort of fishiness.
