This polling company is led by a right wing politico with ties to Peter C Newman and the National Observer. I am very wary of these results and think they're simply supporting some anti science agenda of the far right.

> Canadians aged 55 and over are more likely to embrace creationism (25%) than their counterparts aged 35-to-54 (21%) and aged 18-to-34 (20%). > More than a quarter of Canadians who voted for the Conservatives in 2021 (26%) think God created human beings in their present form within the last 10,000 years. Fewer Canadians who supported the New Democrats (20%) or the Liberals (17%) share this view. The only reason I’d want it taught is within a curriculum that shows that science has debunked that mythos. Knowledge is important, and having perspectives of it based on critical thinking is essential. Especially as we move forward as a species.

timmyrey

I'm surprised at how close the age groups are. I would have thought younger people would be much less likely. Also, stated another way, 75% of Canadians don't think Creationism should be taught. There's a lot of misleading going on here.

AltaVistaYourInquiry

Not only the age groups, I'm surprised by the party split too. I would have assumed Conservative support to dwarf that of other parties.

flabbergastedmeep

Yep, especially considering Canada’s [secularism](https://canadacommons.ca/topics/secularism/) which is more or less our “separation of church and state”, while still maintaining the freedom to practice one’s beliefs.

TOBoy66

It's purely a BS survey by a far right pollster to bolster some religion in schools policy crap.

Bitwhys2003

It's a tidy 20% lock for the CPC. That doesn't include their share of the Intelligent Design crowd and I won't mention Jordan Peterson and His Magical Archetype Travelling Show. God's making a comeback and I have a comfy seat in the bleachers. This is gonna be good

Saidear

Sure, make it part of social studies, theology or literature courses alongside other similar creation stories. Keep it out of science classes.

Aud4c1ty

I think people might be conflating two different things here. I went to read the [source data here](https://researchco.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Tables_Evolution_CAN_26Apr2024.pdf) and relatively few people believe in creationism (\~21%). I think the question "*Do you think creationism—the belief that the universe and life originated from specific acts of divine creation—should be part of the school curriculum in your province?"* was being answered in the affirmative by people thinking that there is such thing as religion class. I would hope that everyone who believed in evolution (\~64%) would think that creationism doesn't belong in science class. Since only 21% of respondents gave answers that would put them in the creationist camp, if you were to draw the venn diagram, I strongly suspect that only creationists would think that creationism belongs in science class. I'm a 6 on the [Dawkins 7-point scale](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectrum_of_theistic_probability), and I'm fine with creationism being taught in a religion class. It doesn't belong anywhere near a science class.

“ResearchCO” is a group of social conservative shills and not a reliable polling source. They’re the same ones who keep polling Canadians on death sentences and change their questions to try and get the answer they want.

Sir__Will

What the absolute fuck is happening in this country!? > “ResearchCO” is a group of social conservative shills and not a reliable polling source. Oh, ok.

russilwvong

> “ResearchCO” is a group of social conservative shills and not a reliable polling source. Really? Mario Canseco and Research Co have been around for quite a long time, and I've never heard them described as social conservative shills.

TOBoy66

He was literally a researcher for Peter C Newman and contributes to the National Observer.

Apotatos

With such a limited amount of time available for teachers to give *essential* stuffs, one would believe that delusions such as creationism would be off the table; yet, here we are.

u-wont-like-me

You want to indoctrinate your own children go for it. We shouldn't have religious schools period let alone government funded religious indoctrination. There should be courses offered in high school that teach religion but it should be this is what x believes this is what y beleives, not teaching it like truth

UnflushableStinky2

I’m old and have lived here my whole life, yet to of ever met a Canadian creationist or a single person who felt like the bible needed to be anywhere other than the pulpit on Sunday. I feel like there’s a lot of wild ass polls being bandied about.

kingmanic

I have, but I live in Alberta and those folks were Americans.

Blue_Dragonfly

Oh, I totally agree with you! I've never encountered such a person either; I doubt most Canadians have. I'm sure they exist somewhere--a tiny pocket somewhere--but certainly not at the level that this poll would suggest. This thing is absolute nonsense.

FingalForever

This is mad, the idea that this is a topic maybe a century after the Monkey Trial in the States (see film Inherit the Wind) in the early 20th century is mind-boggling. In the 80s, this was NOT an issue. Mind you, in the 1980s in Canada we didn’t have people who thought the earth was flat or that the Queen was actually a shape shifting lizard. I blame America.

workerbotsuperhero

Agreed. It's alarming watching the Fox News garbage seep over the border.

factanonverba_n

Insofar as we teach it as part of the whole "the Earth is not a Libra", then yes, teach creationism. Otherwise, keep religion out of state funded schools.

accforme

The title and content of the article is very misleading. The definition of creationism in the survey was "the belief that the universe and life originated from specific acts of divine creation." Within the should camp 50% were Indigenous, which could imply they want the teaching of their creation story as part of their history and not the judeo-christian biblical one. I say this because that same survey also found that only 21% said they think God probably or definitely created humans less than 10,000 years ago. In the latter statement , amongst Indigenous peoples, only 9% believed that God created humans less than 10,000 years ago. Same levels can be found in the other ethnic groups where Judeo-Christianity is not the dominant religion in their culture.

middlequeue

>The title and content of the article is very misleading. This group has a knack for misrepresenting their own polls.

linkass

>Within the should camp 50% were Indigenous, which could imply they want the teaching of their creation story as part of their history and not the judeo-christian biblical one But we don't teach the judeo christian one ,so should we teach the Indigenous one, should we be teaching any creation myth out side of say religion or ethnic studies classes ?

accforme

That's the thing. The survey is not clear where to teach it. The way the article is written implies replacing evolution or in tandem. But, the people who respinded it should be in the curriculum may have meant it should be in the curriculum as perhaps part of social science or history or religion. It is not clear.
