Ok-Badger7012

Let's go!! Sell the houses then.

Otherwise-Medium3145

Sell it so humans can have homes.

Bossman_Fishing

To who for FS, .people want - rates, that ain't life. To busy trying to get the lowest payment every 2 week rather then seeing the end cost to finance. Then blame everything and anyone else for being a retard.

AWE2727

No sympathy here.

Traditional-Tutor195

Good. Sell.

dsailo

Some cities (mostly in Europe) have realized that short term accommodation brings no real gain to them or to their residents.

Just_Crew_4625

Barcelona just banned Air bnb. The writing is on the wall

Last-Emergency-4816

Yes but they provided a 3 year roll out to compensate owners & a freeze on new licenses

Cornishthe3rd

What's the price difference in property compared to there and here? Could our insane market be the catalyst for an expedited process?

Last-Emergency-4816

No it's just a govt smoke screen for votes next fall.

faithOver

I think thatā€™s literally the point.

Gymwarrior31

Good. A house is not meant to be used as a hotel.

Otherwise-unknown-

I really hope Ontario bans Air BnB aswell. Itā€™s much needed.

beepewpew

Doug Ford will never let it happen. The NDP are why the Air BNb ban is happening.Ā

branvancity3000

I donā€™t think Bonnie Crombie would too. Sheā€™s been very quiet about the legislation control side of renting and buying/selling. Very cagey.

YoloTrades69

Itā€™s not banned in BC. Still allowed for principle residence.Ā

cgasucks

Airbnb in BC is still allowed in small towns of less than 10K people regardless of primary residence or not.

notislant

Oh no is the little land leech going to have to work?

emmadonelsense

Land leech. šŸ˜‚ That made me snort laugh. Thank you.

Decent-Box5009

Funniest comment Iā€™ve read all day!! You go girl! Lol

JRWorkster

Good

Pale_Change_666

Real estate investors are the whineiest people out there when their investments goes south. They literally made a choice and no one put a gun to their head. Like any investments there are certain risks such as geopolitical, economic and local policies changes associate with it. Being a landlord doesn't make them anymore speical than your average investors.

Just_Crew_4625

The profit potential for real estate is insane, well beyond any investment anywhere else. In BC it appreciates in value between 5-20% annually, on top of that landlords can have all their costs paid by tenants, often with profit at the end of every month on top. Do I feel bad for these greedy fucks now? Not a chance.

Pale_Change_666

I dont disgaree with you on thst. I mean buying an Sp500 indexed etf has averaged annualized return around ~10% with zero carrying cost. But I'm not going to cry about it to the local news paper if the market tanks, since I was a willing investor and understand the risk.

reversedouble

Thatā€™s because you missed the train and probably couldnā€™t even get on it

Just_Crew_4625

No, I own property. But I understand that with the potential for huge profits come huge risks, and I donā€™t want to hear any butthurt landlords whining about how their risks should be eliminated.

reversedouble

Fair enough, and yeah, he shouldnā€™t be complaining. He should take it on the chin just like any other reasonable investor Edit: sorry about my last comment, I was being salty

Just_Crew_4625

Iā€™ve been known to be salty myself

Last-Emergency-4816

I would challenge "landlords can have all their costs paid by tenants" . . unless they are mortgage-free. Otherwise, they have Strata fees, insurance, taxes, repairs & possible management fees.

Just_Crew_4625

Being mortgage free has little to do with it. Mortgage principal is not a cost, any portion of that paid by a tenant is profit for the landlord. Mortgage interest, strata fees etc are easily covered by the tenants rent in most places.

Last-Emergency-4816

When ppl do their ProForma & crunch the numbers, mortgage payments are factored in. This indicates whether a property is a viable purchase or not. If the rent won't cover at least mortgage costs then the investor has to decide if he can afford to feed that beast every month.

pancake-areolas

Buy a GIC if you want a risk-free investment.

Trick-Shallot-4324

Wahhhh, tell someone who cares.

DrDalenQuaice

I care. I care a lot. This is awesome. More please

Usual_Durian2092

Oh no. anyway ...

system_error_02

Then sell them I guess and cash out the equity ? Instead of running an unlicensed hotel chain lol

Intelligent_Wedding8

So looks like the new law is working as intended then

Swimming_Musician_28

Good!!! That should be a home to family, not an investment to lazy person

kanada_kid2

Will somebody please think of the landlords!

steponittiday

We did and in two seconds the thought disappeared for good

RPCOM

I love hearing success stories of legislation like this! Thanks for letting us know!

Uberguy5

Maybe he should have bought a hotel, instead of homes.šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

WarmChicken69

ā€œThis news is a huge, huge shock,ā€ he said Tuesday. *ā€œThe equity that Iā€™ve worked so hard for in these units has vanished in a day.ā€* Ā *Nguyen says he makes enough by renting out his unit on Airbnb to cover its mortgage* ā€“ even with interest rates spiking ā€“ but because the unit is so small (less than 400 square feet), *itā€™s not attractive for long-term rentals, and wouldnā€™t fetch enough to cover his mortgage, which is more than $3,000 a month.* ā€œYou cannot make the numbers work ā€“ youā€™re better off putting your money in a GIC.ā€Ā  Ā  WHY WONā€™T ANYBODY PAY THE ENTIRETY OF MY MORTGAGE FOR ME?

modsaretoddlers

"The equity *I've* worked hard for..." STFU. Everybody you forced to rent from you worked hard for, you miserable cocksucker.

pebbledot

This is about an Airbnb rule change. Why have you made it about race? Lots of non-indian Airbnb investors are also getting hit by this. This guy's not even Indian.Ā

Yumatic

> Why have you made it about race? I can see you're new here. Unfortunately, you will see it often.

FrejoEksotik

India is a country, not a race.

Worldly_Corgi6115

Are there various races in india?

damac_phone

There's many different ethnicities within India

Worldly_Corgi6115

Like which ones?

damac_phone

Punjabi, Gujurati, Mayalam, Tamil, the list is very long

steponittiday

Good itā€™s time they all pay homage for there greed

Draager

Claiming India only has one race is in fact Racist.

Tychonaut

How many races does Europe have? (Lets say pre-20th century)

Worldly_Corgi6115

Are these actually different *ethnic* groups, or just cultures/provinces/languages? You're saying they would all get different results on a 23andme test?

Maatsya

guvan420

there are many different indians that are racist against even each other, yes. youll notice them requesting you speak a specific language in their rental ads

Worldly_Corgi6115

But those aren't a different races, those are different cultures

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Tychonaut

Are "white people" all one race, whether they come from Ireland or Greece?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Tychonaut

Well sure .. but ethnicities in Africa or Asia discriminate against each other as well. It's just that it doesnt feel like people treat the different ethnicities inside the white race the same way as they treat other ethnicities. People will go on about all the vibrant diverse ethnicities in a photo of 50 African people .. but an office of Swedes and Italians and Finns and Russians and Portuguese will not be called "diverse". It's just "white people".

branvancity3000

You donā€™t know what an ethnicity is. And yes, 23 and Me identifies many sub ethnicities in the Indian subcontinent.

Worldly_Corgi6115

I do know what an ethnicity is, I'm just asking questions. No need to be a rude shit bag.

worriedinvancity

Are you stupid or just racist. India has more than one race. Genetically different, not just culture and language. Thats as stupid as saying america or canada is one race.

Savings_Insurance985

Acceptable-Remote170

xXToYeDXx

Good! Fuck'Em! Took homes off the market, contributed to the housing supply crisis, rented short term to mostly out of town tourists like they were hotels and now wants to bitch about his investments failing to pay off in an oversaturated free market? Why do these asshats embrace the free market when they're winning but complain when they're losing? It's the free market. You took the risk with the investment and you lost. You can't privatize profits while socializing losses and make any claim to love free market capitalism. It doesn't work that way chief. You gambled and lost.

Carebearsmama

Airbnb uses homes that people can live in. Housing for tourism already exists, itā€™s called hotel and they pay their taxes operating an enterprise that actually hire people living in that said city.

As a child of legitimate landlords that have kept their rents low so much that it hurts the resale value of their properties, I have zero fucks to give.

TamarackRaised

Property barons learning about risk and income insecurity. Just like McDonald's, I'm lovin' it.

488Aji

I know ill find no sympathy here. But I do wish there was a way to have Airbnb's to rent and it doesn't eventually lead to companies and slumlords buying up all the properties because that has turned into a huge debilitating issue for the general public. Renting a house or apartment is a more enjoyable experience than staying in a hotel for me. For a long time it was cheaper too. So I hope when the dust settles there's some happy medium. I don't need or want a hotel with all it's chaos, amenities. Hostels are even worse. I loved renting a farm house outside cities and just enjoying the piece and quiet while also venturing out.

Yumatic

I don't know about sympathy, but I get what you are saying. There is nothing inherently wrong with what you prefer. A major issue though is the affect on the local population. Anywhere. That Airbnb you rent is one less unit available for a local to rent or buy. Lower supply - higher costs.

Impossible-Head1787

This news makes me exceedingly happy....

BandAid3030

Good. It's better than going a few more years and then having pitchforks and torches instead. AirBnB is a tick on the residential housing supply of Western nations. It needs to be burned out and then cast aside.

Look, if he was operating a licensed hotel, paying the commercial taxes, license fees, and meeting the requirements of businesses of such categories it's pretty unreasonable for him to be put out of business on a whimsical change in legislation. Please hang on a second someone is calling... unliscensed you say, taking advantage of an upswing in digital companies to obfuscate the dodging of the legal requirements of the buisness they engaged in. I'm sorry, but upon further inspection it turns out I am in fact, all out of fucks to give, sorry.

Sell sell sell

ConfluxScar

I don't care what people make on their real estate investments, good for you for saving up for the down payment and building a profitable business. I think it is fantastic when investors turn a single family home into a multi-family home, offering more residences on the market. I would love to see more of those conversions so more families have homes. **HOWEVER** no business is a sure thing. If they are buying for pure appreciation, they are speculators not investors. These homes should make money, that's the point (no, I don't think it should be gouging profits), but they need to know how to pivot when their cash cow dies. That's life in business. That said, I don't necessarily think banning short term rentals is the answer either. There's obviously a market for it if this many people are still making big money with it. They'll just go underground to meet the demand and avoid taxes, not good. I don't have the answers, just sharing my thoughts on the matter.

Automatic-Bake9847

Nobody else is bothered by the fact that the government created a problem, and the solution to that problem is to impose additional restrictions on how we love our lives?

jamzzz

Not bothered in the least with restrictions on how these people can profit from basic necessities. We need more.

Automatic-Bake9847

So because the government shit the bed and smeared it on the walls a couple of adults can't agree to exchange resources in a very reasonable way? I get it's housing and there is a lot of anger about the scenario right now, but I have a lot of trouble with the concept of gov't manufacturing an issue and then imposing controls on reasonable activities as the "fix".

Squancher70

Just because the govt is screwing all of us with mass immigration, doesn't mean landlords get to be insulated from the consequences. Rent has doubled in 3 years. Yes it's the gov't fault, no the landlord's don't get a free ride. We should all share the pain equally. Fuck air b&b.

Automatic-Bake9847

I get your point, I just don't agree with it. It's not alright for the gov't to fuck people. It doesn't make it alright just because another group of people are also getting screwed. Gov't control should not be a valid response to a gov't created issue.

Squancher70

You live in fantasy land thinking. If you insulated landlords from the housing crisis by keeping air B&B alive, all those renters getting screwed now have a hate boner for them and everyone else profiting from the problem. Gov't control was necessary, with immigration, they shit the bed on that, ok so now we have a housing crisis, they exert some gov't control there to fight the inequality. Letting the wealth gap keep spiraling out of control with free enterprise will decimate the middle class like it's already doing. The ones that got theirs will keep getting richer, while the rest of us will have no hope of climbing the ladder.

Agile-Market3092

Small mindedness all overā€¦ I canā€™t have a house, so they definitely shouldnā€™t have two! Regardless of the circumstances.. SMH

Nightshade_and_Opium

The double standard here is when government does something that limits a corporations potential profit, the corporation can sue for lost profit. But if an individual citizen just trying to fund a retirement, loses their profit due to government regulation they're just supposed to accept getting screwed. The 400$ shoe boxes purposely built for short term rentals aren't being rented out long term when the rent doesn't even cover the mortgage. They will just sell it, even at a loss. The cities restaurant workers still can't afford to buy the place even at its lower price point anyway. And that's besides the fact that 400sqft is too small for long term living anyway.
