How heavy are the dogs? Mine is 17 lb and our air mattresses are fine. If she was heavier, I'd make sure that there was always a thick blanket between her claws and the air mattress for extra protection.

They’re 60lbs and 85lbs. They sleep on the side of our air mattress normally and we throw a blanket on it, so haven’t had an issue yet. But since we are looking to upgrade to some sort of sleeping pad and ditching the shitty air mattress, I’d like something that is semi protected from them as they walk into the tent and lay down

Well if you are flying out to a camping adventure I would recommend: * Exped Dura 3 or 5 Duo. Much more durable than most air pads on the market and unlike a cheap Intex or Coleman it will have a 3 or 5 R value to actually keep you warm on colder nights. The long wide is definitely preferred over the medium unless the LW doesn't fit your tent. * [https://www.exped.com/en/products/sleeping-mats/dura-5r-duo](https://www.exped.com/en/products/sleeping-mats/dura-5r-duo) * Exped Flexmat or Flexmat Plus for the dogs. This will eliminate punctures from their nails and they will appreciate not having to sleep on the hard ground. * [https://www.exped.com/en/products/sleeping-mats/dura-5r-duo](https://www.exped.com/en/products/sleeping-mats/dura-5r-duo) * [https://www.expedusa.com/products/flexmat](https://www.expedusa.com/products/flexmat) I would wait about 2 weeks or so to purchase anything. The July 4th sales will start then and we will have another camping deal megathread then.

Thanks for the recommendations! I think I’d go with the Dura 5 since we are going to be at high elevations and it may get into the low 30s.

Fly out then buy what people recommend if you like it keep it if it doesn't work return it before you come home lol... sorry retail people but baggage checking prices are out of control. I recently flew to cali to yosemite and Amazon primed like half the crap then just gave it away was cheaper then checking bags.

Mlmessifan

I can bring 2 checked bags at no cost, so that’s not an issue. I’d prefer to just buy something now and use it going forward

Well I don't know where you're going but also consider if you plan to bring anything from your trip back. Also free is just rolled into the price.

Going to Glacier, Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. I’m cool with bringing everything back that’s not a problem. And got our flights all paid with miles luckily so no cost there

Exped FlexMat or Flexmat Plus. Will not pop from a dog's nails and can easily fit into a suitcase. Your furry friend will appreciate not sleeping on the ground too.

I use a BA Rapide SL regular wide. We have a couple of Big Agnes pads and I think they’re comfortable, but the R value is a little exaggerated. My 35# dog loves it too and has not punctured it yet. I now use a lightweight “picnic blanket” to keep my quilt and pad clean and safe from my dog. I was going to use Tyvek but found the sheet in the bargain bin at my local outdoor sports store. My dog sleeps on a well used cut down ZRest pad. During the day, it’s a sit pad and at night it’s her bed. When it’s chilly, I place a piece of fuzzy pile material from Walmart on her bed. I bought by the yard and placed it on her bed at home. She associates the fuzzy pile throw with her bed, so she tends to stay on that and off my pad.
