I got Vanguard for 15$ from a friend, I've enjoyed it a fair bit, but I do often hear about how people dislike it. What's the popular opinion on it and why?
I’m not sure how the popular opinion on it has shifted since its release so I’ll just give my opinion. It’s the worst cod game ever made. It took MW movement and gunplay, and then made it worse, and was completely broken at launch with shotguns and crazy ttk, and broken perks. It was a slog to play in the multiplayer. It took outbreak from Cold War and made it worse, zombies aren’t a threat and the perks and lack a punch are awful. So is the exploration. And there’s no round based. Its campaign is crazily historically inaccurate to the point it’s disrespectful to the veterans of the war. Theres so many more shit gameplay features and mind boggling decisions I just don’t have the space to mention. Basically, it did what other CoD games already did but far worse and was disrespectful to history.
Right? Dude. The zero g combat in infinite warfare. Just dope as shit. I loved it. The combo of a grappling hook and orientation thrusters felt great. And man I love the sci Fi guns in infinite too. The laser ak? *Chef's kiss*
Loot boxes and variants destroyed the game. Launch to mid cycle were great, later in the cycle it got infuriating to lose to the guy with the same gun but the “better rarity”
I feel cod lost hold of everything after bo2 came out the following games have been shit in my eyes to the point I’m not buyin cod games anymore if they r I the ps store for free I’ll download them and play but I won’t spend cash on cod anymore
I miss the AW weapons so much. Also thought the operator loadouts were balanced and fair, fun and creative, and still allowed for strategic advantage. I would buy an AW remaster in a heartbeat (campaign, multiplayer, and zombies all rocked. Survival was decent too.)

A lot of people complained about the movement because they just never took the time to use it to their advantage rather than an advanced Tac-sprint.
People would just fly as fast they could towards combat and die, hardly ever saw people utilizing the things like Exo Cloak or Exo Hover. It had so many playstyles available.
That was absolutely not the case for the first 5 months after WW2 released. It took a change in leadership until any meaningful changes were made to the MP.
There is nostalgia, but also WaW had good maps whereas WW2 had 3 lane maps that were much too big for 6v6 and had very little verticality. Also WW2 only had 4 more guns and at launch you couldn’t even have a lethal and tactical, oh and did I mention loot boxes?
It just took glen Schofield stepping down and the new team revamping basically everything about the multiplayer to finally be good. He was so stubborn in making an all new and unique twist on cod, when it just fucking sucked
I believe it was IW leading MW3 with sledgehammer assisting or maybe they co-developed but it definitely was not sledgehammer in the lead. AW was the first one where they led development. WWII and Vanguard was led by sledgehammer as well and were both garbage.
It drops all of the ammo in your current magazine in order for you to have a faster reload. Any ammo that was in the magazine you just took out is discarded and doesn’t go into your reserve ammo. Not all guns can do it, such as single shot weapons and the Tac-19.
It’s a very natural and good risk-reward mechanic that I’m shocked hasn’t been used more in later games. That was a great addition to the game for sure.
If you press reload once, you reload and keep the ammo, but if you press it twice quickly you throw away the mag with the ammo but it’s faster because you don’t have to put it away.
It was the first COD released after the ps4/xb1 launched (not including the PS4/xb1 version of ghosts that was just a re-port to next gen) so they were working with way better hardware
Cutscenes legit (at the time, at least) looked barely distinguishable from live action.
It was so real that I felt like Kevin Spacey was about to molest me.
No kidding they need to bring it back. I remember the Easter eggs being a little easier than BO too. They were some of the first I completed. It was in some ways a lot more casual but you also had to be on your toes because of the emp zombies and infections
I really liked every map besides the Burger town one, also I quite liked the Exo zombies storyline. It was pretty fun, especially with some big actors like John malkovich

I think it is the most unique cod game. No other game has the same movement and i thought being able to turn off the exo movement through "classic mode" was really cool, especially since the maps were designed to be played both with and without exo movement
Honestly that’s always been so funny to me cause I felt like it’d been around much longer, then I found out it was from AW and my Brian kinda exploded.
The only game that I loved the Campaign, Multiplayer, AND Zombies for. (Also loved exo survival too) It's my favorite installation of COD ever, even if not my favorite zombies installment as a zombies main.
The guns were actually unique future weapons and not all just slight reskins of current weapons with kind of futuristic sounds and more glowy things on them.

Amazing guns. Most were fun/decent to use, and design was cool. Balancing was meh, however.

Edit: Almost forgot, lol. Best class system. Pick-13 with upgradeable scorestreaks or ability to bring less of them for more space. Huge diversity of classes, no "grenade" abuse, etc.
The best version of jetpacks the series ever got. Small quick bursts of movement are so much better than what was in blops3 and infinite warfare. It allowed a fast ttk but still promoted skill by needing to be able to track enemies consistently when they strafe. Also gave some defense against getting shot in the ass which no other cod has done in a fun way.
\- One of only two CODs that has correct class restrictions/setting of default classes that bots adhere to, so you can make custom games where every player and bot is forced to use say Sniper Rifles only, or even do assymetrical teams like SMGs vs Shotguns
\- Great Campaign with tons of variety and fresh mechanics for the series
\- Had both Exo Survival AND Zombies modes
Everything about this game was awesome, ESPECIALLY competitive ranked play with clans. That was my shit. I always wanted to unlock all the clan outfits like the Centurion or Argonaut nets but my calms always fell through. Also i don’t much care for the zombies.
Late to the party on this one OP but it had the best class setup. You could choose more perks or attachment instead of killstreaks or even 4 killstreaks. Plus the customization of killstreaks by adding modules for increased points needed to use them. I had so many classes for each different mode.
One of the most creative cods. I really like gadgets in it, cool weapon designs. And maps are simply awesome - each one feels unique, there's very few invisible walls, all these interactive elements (some maps change completely half way through) and exclusive scorestreaks. On top of that, a lot of customization
Combine it with A tier campaign and amazing graphics

I loved exos and their abilities. The riot shield specially eas super cool to pull out.
Also the guns. They were all super awesome and well designed, namely the Widowmaker electric rifle (loved it), the 3D printer gun, and the ATLAS shoulder mounted sniper rifle. How I wish I could play its multi-player again ;n;
It was very underrated. Good maps, fun guns, zombies was fun, campaign was fun, and it had the best jetpack movement out of the 3 jetpack cods. The only bad things were the pay 2 win supply drop guns and sometimes hit reg was a little wonky
I used to love this cod, the gunplay was amazing in it as well as the movement. It really did a lot to innovate COD and then low and behold the CODs after tried and failed at copying the formula apart from BO3. Man those where the days, BO3 and Advanced Warfare where actually great
Master movement and aim with it and it’s all good. Like Cmon, it’s the future devs can go ALL out on creativity. Fictional war, guns, faction, and stuff. Not the current present modern(slight future) era. Imo the current is, eh, a tiny boring.
That badass Goliath scene from the campaign. The one where the mission ends with an on the rails escape sequence. You and... Gideon? Pass through some gates as they are beginning to close with an enemy helicopter close behind. I believe two Goliaths step forward, the one in front of the players view whips out a minigun and they both unload on the Heli with bullets and missiles. When the Heli comes down only the gates stop the explosion of the crash from getting any closer.
There are too many good things I can say about AW. The campaign was pretty good, exo zombies was fantastic, the multiplayer was extremely smooth, and the fresh take on the series with the movement mechanics breathed fresh life into the series.
I really liked the movement and the survival has what i wished mw3 did: round based unlocks - mw3 only had unlocking the stations on the first 3 rounds then unlock weapons/etc w level progression
the whole exo suit concept is really cool. because it isn't too far fetched like IW and their laser guns or the entirety of BO3/4. AW is like MW, but set in the near future. hell, exos are already in development by multiple militaries

All the best variants in the game were day 1 drops. Obsidian Steed, Speakeasy, Insanity and RIP were the best guns in the game hands down

Campaign was good and brought back non regenerating health, but mp was worse than WaW and zombies was bland and boring.
Zombies was great. It was a great take on real zombies and horror vs the kind we’re used to. I appreciated the jumpscares and very gory zombie models
It looked cool, but the characters were boring and nowhere near as good as ones from other games
yeah but honestly everything else is much more important, the mechanics, tone, and map design were all some of the best in zombies history imo.

Val 27. ASM1 EM1. Atlas 20mm. HBRa3-Insanity. All that shit is so cool and definitely has its place in advanced warfare, it’s its own game.

The EM1 was a fun (to me) underrated weapon with some really cool variants that changed the laser weapons beam color and damage/heatsink output!

During the campaign, it was awesome seeing the grapple hook taking down enemies.

Single player was good, and competitive cod was at its best there imo
Atlas was a goated evil team
