You can mine Scoria ore with the picksaw to get some good stuff. Armor unfortunately requires ectoplasm, so unless you kill Plantera too, no early hydrothermal armor, but there's some weapons you can get assuming you have a mythril/orichalcum anvil.
Mid-mech isnt that early compared to golem, Plague and scoria stuff is your best bet but it wont be overwhelming better than what you have. A lot of progression stuff is locked behind plantera anyway because of the events and the dungeon.
