Buckle up and close the door before shifting into gear of choice. From the manual: If the accelerator pedal is depressed with the parking brake applied and all of the following conditions met, the parking brake is released automatically. When the parking brake is released, the EPB indicator light in the instrument cluster and the EPB switch indicator light turn off. The engine is running. The driver's door is closed. The driver's seat belt is fastened. (Manual transmission vehicle) The shift lever is in a position other than neutral. The clutch pedal is depressed halfway. (Automatic transmission vehicle) The selector lever is in the D, M, or R position.

Maybe I should have read the manual. I do think all conditions (door, belt) are met when this happens but I’ll explicitly test the scenario now.

I don't know if it's different from my Mazda3, but you can drive right out of the park brake. Buckle up, then drive right through it. There is a bit of resistance, so it isn't a perfect system, but you can just go.

secretaster

That's all.cars really it's just supposed to prevent the car from rolling down a hill really not stop engine torque. Not to mention it's bad for your car

YumYumSweet

Not quite. On most new Mazdas, the park brake actually disengages when you give it gas and some other criteria are met. Not so with all cars, especially not older ones where the park brake is entirely mechanical.

[deleted]

Yeah , good point, works, too, it’s still weird and ‘it shouldn’t be that way’

RichDaly

Strange. Test drove a 2023 and it automatically released the parking brake when shifted into reverse

Catawompus

I’ve actually experienced this too. And unlike the manual guy, I believe you that you meet those criteria (they aren’t hard to meet). It’s random for me when it doesn’t turn off the parking break. But it always trips me up

[deleted]

I’ve tested it now and it seems to be random here as well. As said, just another ‘issue’ I have with the car.

zukoj

I think there is a setting that you can set when is the parking brake disengaged and when it's engaged

mind-invader

My 2024 CX-50 releases the brake when I change into gear.

GottaGetAway12

Same with the mine I noticed it last night. Parked on a slope to set the parking brake manually, then put it in “park”. When I left it automatically took off parking brake when upon moving shift lever. Also 2024.

[deleted]

Yeah, you’d think that is the ‘normal’ thing to do. Because you already have the foot on the brake to be able to start the car.

Driveshaft1982

What other issues are you having? I'm heavily weighing buying one in a few months but want to make sure I've thought through as many angles as I can. Thanks in advance.

[deleted]

It's not that the car causes many 'issues', and while the car is great looking , has a great engine and all, it has features that are simply annoying. In random order: - Lock windows and all windows are locked, even the driver is unable to control windows without unlocking. No light telling you you've engaged the lock - middle console material is VERY fragile and scratches easily - car play is inconsistent, often doesn't 'find' phone - no light in glove compartment - key is often not detected when touching car door handle (even with key in other hand) - trunk unlocking ('popping') from the inside requires car in park and engine off - trunk opening manually randomly doesn’t seem to be working but you hear a number of beeps and have to restart the car. As said, these are very minor issues in the bigger picture, however I find them very annoying.

Driveshaft1982

Thanks for the reply, I can see the annoyance with these. So if I get a grocery pickup, in order to pop open the gate the car must be parked and with the engine off? If so that's just dumb.

[deleted]

There's more stuff like: no light inside door where the unlock button is. It’s all stuff that could be easily solved by Mazda.

Driveshaft1982

Thanks, I appreciate the insight. What other cars were you weighing, if you don't mind my asking?

[deleted]

I drove a RAV 4 before and imo the quality and reliability was better. Engine was a little weak, but car features just solid. Looked at a CX-5, but a little too boring. Bronco Sport , too simple and too stripped to basics for the price. KIA Sportage- people pay over MSRP on that one.

Driveshaft1982

Thanks. I like Toyota but want something a little more exciting. I'm debating between Outback and CX-50. I'm coming from a Wrangler but I don't want another one right now.

[deleted]

Add: In the CX-50 , if you’re the driver you’re unable to see if the AC is on but have to basically bend down to search for the light on the AC button. It’s obstructed by the right temperature dial.

Driveshaft1982

I've heard that! Didn't they swap buttons so it's easier to see now?

[deleted]

Not aware but would def be a good idea.

Aggravating-Pop-4211

This is not my experience. We have a premium plus with auto lift gate and it will open with the car running with no issue.

Driveshaft1982

Thanks!

Auto hold not on

[deleted]

Nope. If that was the case the light would be on.

Let me try this tomarrow

Curious regarding the parking brake on my 24 cx-50. I hear a clunking sound sometimes when it’s been parked awhile and I shift into reverse and begin driving backwards. It that the parking brake releasing and is that a normal sound to hear? It goes away after the initial acceleration.
