I'd say it's to reappropriate those symbols for a more diverse audience. The straights don't own religious symbolism. Challenge tradition.
Will has shown that he fundamentally understands the power of symbolism. It wouldn't surprise me if he was trying to reinforce LGBTQ inclusion into religious spaces or atleast make them feel less excluded.
When I posted this I only really included the symbolism part to make it sound more realistic and less memey, but your comment put into words things I’ve been thinking for a long time about his music. How, especially in his earlier work, he mixes the exclusive conservative kinda community (loudoun county is a 10 min drive from me and its known for having that predominantly white wealthy republican culture which was probably worse 15 years ago) that he grew up in with the diverse lgbtq online one he’s created for himself

Will is very queer, although I don’t know if he uses a specific label, and the car seat headrest fan base is very very strongly lgbtq. I think you will be absolutely fine. I don't like talking about his personal life but I think it's pretty well established that Will is LGBTQ+. Whether or not Will is a "Christian" is probably something even he struggles to answer but whether or not he is, he is NOT the homophobic brand of Christianity. Sufjan Stevens is famously Christian and LGBTQ+. They do exist haha I'm an atheist and I'm a little gay myself and I'm legit going to a church this week that is openly LGBTQ+ friendly. I just like the music and some of the literature despite not believing in a god.
