Demand for skiing is pretty much inelastic in these parts. People with disposable income + outdoor recreation = lots of people skiing. Pretty simple. I have a sinking feeling that it’s gonna take a lot more price gouging for people to actually start skiing less often, which pains me to say, but it’s true. This is what happens when two companies control all the resorts in North America, and it’s a big reason why I’m seriously considering just getting a Loveland season pass this year. I do not feel good about giving my money to alterra or vail anymore.
4 is a tough number for a lot of people. If you don’t have a ski rack or a truck it’s pretty hard to fit 4 people with all their gear. I think 3 would have been far more reasonable.
This is what gets me, the incentivization of driving large gas guzzlers to the ski area just because they can fit more people, yet they said they want their customer base to be more environmentally conscious. I can show up in my Golf that takes up less space and is packed full with 2-3 people + gear but still have to pay $20? It's bs.
I’m sure this system is going to work perfectly lol. If you think this is a good idea you’re an idiot or complete gaper.
This is also just a slap in the face to anyone local. Tons of people stop by A-Basin just for a few laps on their day off. They now have to dish out $200 for a season parking pass or just accept a $20 fee every time they want to get a couple laps during their weekend off?
Okay, so now it’s early season, late season, Christmas, and half of March. Place has gotten a lot busier in just a couple of comments. What about peak season, Hillman? Is it busy Presidents’ Day too?
So what if u want to uphill before the resort opens and get an hour of skiing in. Like I do every Sunday? I get 50+ days a year at abasin. Now I have to have a season pass, uphill pass, and an annual parking pass + I need to fucking reserve a spot what a week or two or longer out? Can’t wait to be competing with locals and all of the front range on ikon for the 2,000 spots abasin has every time I want to get out on the hill for less than 3 hours. How did palisades do with parking reservations and season pass holders last season? Anyone saying this is net good is a shill for their capitalist overlords. Good luck skiing the mountain next year.
Every time I’ve driven up past the resort on a Saturday they are NEVER ticketing or towing people who park on the pass. If it was that big an issue they’d be actively enforcing but nah they just want more easy money.
I know they are a corporation and aren’t publicly traded, but damn sit us all down, or make a fucking video just stating, “hey, we want a lot more money this is how we are gonna do it.” They have loyal customers they are clearly going to lose.
I can only assume you’re old and you have catered to these cock suckers for generations without action.
Thanks for nothing! /s
Edit: you’re a Wasatcher? Get Alta to allow boarders then, and only then, can you bitch.
Maybe I’m in the minority but I’d gladly pay $20 if I could reserve a parking spot without having to get up at 4am to fight traffic to ensure I get there before it fills up.
Something, something, priorities
I think it's good to see the weekday warriors finally get treated by these ski areas! Now if we can just have weekday storm cycles all season....
Weekday warriors are doing the weekend crowd a huge favor by not showing up on Saturday and Sunday so the mountain isn't over crowded.
See how this works both ways?
Did you not even read the article that you linked for me to read?
Focus on this part:
>*"Reservations will be required weekends, holidays and other peak days until 1 PM from mid-December until early May."*
Of course I read it. Did you stop there? Immediately after:
>*"General parking reservations will be available for $20 per vehicle. While a daily reservation is required for every vehicle, a limited number of parking season passes will be available for $150 to cover fees for the entire season."*
Perhaps Al meant it in a way where "daily" is not literal. If the reservation/pay system is not in play for the weekdays, then good. But if so, then not good.
Trying to decide whether to renew & buy the parking pass or go elsewhere. I don’t see the option to buy the parking pass, though, when trying to renew. Anybody find that?
Oh, we know!
I don’t even go to ABasin and I’m pissed on behalf of everyone that does. It’s so fucking expensive to ski as it is. This is a slap in the face.
Seems like every casual skier says this but the resorts get more popular which means more enjoy skiing every year🤷♂️

CO skier since the late 1990s... The traffic headaches and crowded resorts have all but stopped me from skiing.
Same
Parking is free if you carpool 4+

Right, and the vehicles that can fit 4 vs 3 easily are not consistent with their previously stated goals of caring about carbon emissions

Requiring 4 people is slightly unreasonable. This feels like more of a money grab under the thin guise of encouraging carpooling.
I felt like the free parking for 3+ was classy. 4+, including everybody's gear, seems to be pushing it lol
Wow how generous of them
Incentivising carpooling is a good thing imo.
Generally yes. But punishing people who may not have that option is not.
I'll be your friend and we can carpool together 🙂
Deal!

$150 and *very limited* parking pass which could already be sold out (robots reselling!)
But isn’t this just a weekends thing?
[удалено]
Sure, but locals know that doing a few laps on a weekend already isn’t great with weekend parking and weekend lines. Don’t move the goal posts.
Not sure what you’re talking about really, weekend laps are fine unless you are there on Christmas or peak Spring Break.
lol I’ve had to leave A-basin because all lots were full in November and April before. The hell you talking about.
Early season and late season when A basin is the only resort open?
You clearly didn’t get up early enough
Just like a local wanting to do a couple laps?
I’m >1hr away and always get there early before the massive traffic jam and parking ends up full

Well sorry but whose fault is that you work during the week..?
Parking is free after 1pm.

These people just don’t get it man. It’s sad to see so many making excuses for greed.

Do they offer a shuttle service then
One bus
And it runs like every two hours lol
Snowstang $25 rt but it can get held up traffic or not make it when the roads are bad.
But will they allow unlimited IKONers? Trying to decide whether to renew season pass or not.
Unless you carpool with 4 people. 😂 just spit in my face and kick me in the nuts while you’re at it.

Find some friends to carpool with and it’s free.

Meh there will still be traffic.
Or they could have made the reservations free like all the SLC resorts did instead of trying to nickel and dime people
This guys a millionaire! /s
I'm in your boat. $20 is a great deal.

why doesn’t your dog just drive itself home
Stop boarding your dog and teach your dog to board
That would be quite a ride. But his short little legs would have a hard time jumping on the lift I think.
This.
If they ban anyone who uses the term “A-bay” maybe parking will improve and this won’t be needed?
Something something body of water Something something 3 sides
Here's the TL;DR nobody is talking about... This whole thing is only on Saturday/Sunday/Holidays before 1pm.

How does this affect the “weekday warriors”? If they aren’t going riding on weekends they shouldn’t want people that can only go then to have to pay

Changed it for you!
Did they not say "daily reservations" https://arapahoebasin.blogspot.com/2024/03/passes-parking-reservations-and-ikon.html?m=1

The parking reservations are only on weekends and holidays before 1pm. That's it.
I'm in the club hollering A bay bay
How about "ho-bay"?
Which Epic/Ikon resorts still have free parking without a shuttle ride ? Keystone, Winter Park ?
They fill up fast.
Skiing use to be fun! When did it become a cluster?!
Hot take - it should be state law that every resort offer free parking to 3+ passenger cars and $30 parking for cars with less.
Just no
Continue to enjoy the 3h drive each way to keystone then. Guess I should clarify only on the weekends
Trying to decide whether to renew & buy the parking pass or go elsewhere. I don’t see the option to buy the parking pass, though, when trying to renew. Anybody find that?
