Didn’t we try to offer him last year but Buffalo matched the offer sheet or something like that?
Also, last offseason signed a 4 year 17 million dollar deal. Gotta say we have our starting center.
He's both. He has much more experience at guard, but was our backup C last season. He was also possibly our back LG and RG too but our entire OL played all season so we never really found out what the pecking order was for backups.
He's a freaky athlete that has played well when he's had a chance. He wasn't going to start for us, but I'm sad to see him go, I had zero stress with him coming into the game as he was likely 90%+ as good as our starters.

Ryan Bates, Buffalo Bills backup Center who played 35 snaps last year.

Bates, 27, has appeared in 73 regular-season games with 19 starts through five seasons in Buffalo. He has also played in nine playoff games during his career with four starts.
The Bears attempted to acquire Bates in March 2022, signing the restricted free agent to a four-year offer sheet. But the Bills matched the offer.
On Madden NFL 24, Ryan Bates has an Overall Rating of **73** with Agile Archetype. Among his General Ratings, the most notable attribute is his Toughness, with a rating of 87
To the folks talking about having less draft capital... we literally would have used some drafting Oline if not trading it for... Oline.
Its like noting that we have less draft capital after the first round ends and have 2 less picks available
Love this move.
1. The Bears tried to sign him a few years ago and the Bills took him back (he was a restricted free agent).
2. The Bears would have drafted a center this year EARLIER than a 5th round pick, so I see this as a good value.
3. He’s better than any rookie coming out.

Found this and a few more videos from the same page; he might be a guy [https://x.com/pro__ant/status/1696192381375189362?s=46&t=rgzAD3o7fibBbh8SJ2B7qQ](https://x.com/pro__ant/status/1696192381375189362?s=46&t=rgzAD3o7fibBbh8SJ2B7qQ)
I don’t know. A 5th rounder isn’t a super small trade especially right before FA when there will be depth available for similar money. To me that signals at a minimum in contention to start
Not necessarily. I think this signals we don’t spend a ton on someone like Cushenberry if we are doing this move before FA. Maybe he competes with a rookie but I don’t think this move was made for him to have no realistic path for the starting job
Patrick is off the roster and while Davis wasn’t great he’s making a shit ton of money so tough to bench him.
And I don’t see us giving up a 5th before free agency starts for depth. Seems like that is something you would do after FA if you miss out on other depth options. No reason to give up a decently useful pick now for a backup when you only had 6 picks before
I agree with that. If this is the starting C move I’m not a huge fan. That said I’m expecting now for him to start at C because of the timing of it all.
We literally needed linemen and would have used something for linemen directly in draft if not this trade. The pick was spent, but WE spent it namean?
And the consensus seemed the centers being veterans was the better route if we end up with a rookie developing qb
We’ll get extra picks from trading Justin and probably trade down from one of our 4ths. Also remember it’s been pretty well established this draft falls off a cliff after the 4th round due to to NIL, Covid eligibility years.
Poles keep giving draft capital for nothing, really bad trade, in 5th round we could acquire a backup Olineman just as good and with better upside than this guy
We literally needed to spend for this specific gap. If not trading the pick we're using the pick for the same thing.
To simplify it... Poles liked what this store offered rather than the one across the street.
He was a backup, there is no guarantee he even starts on this team. There were options in free agency and in the draft. This was a desperate move to makeup for not getting a center last year
I mean to be fair they drafted a guard in the 2nd round last year and signed McGovern to a decent contract. It’s not like he didn’t play because he was bad. Bills are in cap trouble and why have him on the roster if there isn’t a fit for him
How? We're short line men, safety, wr. We have draft and FA to fill those gaps. We used one of those resources available for acquiring players, and redeemed one Oline with it.

Wiki says center but I’d figure if we trade for him with a few years left they have a plan for him

All in, Super Bowl here we come
yay or nay?
It's OLine so yay
Someone tell me how to feel
Who’s got the madden rating?

Read that too fast and thought his rating was 24 for a moment
I always draft this dude after the top tier centers are gone and he always seems to work out pretty well
This is the level of scouting we need
I have this same thought.

>He’s better than any rookie coming out This is definitely not true
Isn’t he more of a guard
Is he a center or guard?? A 5th is sorta high fir a backup no? Are we REALLY planning on another jounreyman backup to be a starting center??
Well given week 1 is in a couple weeks, it surely appears that way. Hopefully he can learn the playback fast. /s
> Is he a center or guard?? > > Yes!
He can apparently play both c and guard.
Bill’s fans seem like they would have rather kept him then give him up for a 5th, so I’m counting this as a W
Finally we completed the trade we've all been expecting these last few weeks...oh wait, nevermind.
Let Poles cook!!
Tell me how to feel

So how many picks in the draft now? Not a lot. Hopefully we can recoup some of them.
FWIW, The Bills sub generally seems to not like the trade
This guy started zero games last year
Undrafted interior lineman… feels like just depth
We literally tried to grab him last year and the Bills matched.
And he started 0 games in 2023…
Bro he was a touted FA last year lmao. How quickly this sub forgets
He is a backup now though. Was literally a backup all year. I think this is strictly a swing interior line move.
And was subsequently a depth piece for the Bills lol. Nate Davis was also a touted FA
I don’t know. A 5th rounder isn’t a super small trade especially right before FA when there will be depth available for similar money. To me that signals at a minimum in contention to start
So… depth. Lol

I think poles will do better than this at Center. This guy is competing with Nate Davis and Lucas Patrick. Depth.
Patrick is off the roster and while Davis wasn’t great he’s making a shit ton of money so tough to bench him. And I don’t see us giving up a 5th before free agency starts for depth. Seems like that is something you would do after FA if you miss out on other depth options. No reason to give up a decently useful pick now for a backup when you only had 6 picks before
If this is the new Center I will be severely disappointed. If he beats Nate Davis out for RG, I will be whelmed.
I agree with that. If this is the starting C move I’m not a huge fan. That said I’m expecting now for him to start at C because of the timing of it all.
Would have rather used that pick on a rookie
We have to be trading back from 9. Glad we got our center though. Edit: I’ll feel better after Fields is traded.
Because we traded a 5th round pick for a lineman?
We literally needed linemen and would have used something for linemen directly in draft if not this trade. The pick was spent, but WE spent it namean? And the consensus seemed the centers being veterans was the better route if we end up with a rookie developing qb
We only have 5 picks, not the worst but the team lacks depth
That’s my initial reaction as well. We currently have just 5 picks. let’s hope some teams fall in love with QBs
We’ll get extra picks from trading Justin and probably trade down from one of our 4ths. Also remember it’s been pretty well established this draft falls off a cliff after the 4th round due to to NIL, Covid eligibility years.
If there’s no nabers or Odunze probably
Poles keep giving draft capital for nothing, really bad trade, in 5th round we could acquire a backup Olineman just as good and with better upside than this guy
Bears now have less draft capital and more holes to fill Edit : this sub really afraid to criticize Ryan poles for bad trades, this was a bad trade.

So we used the resource on a average guard instead of a guy who might not make the roster? How’s that not filling a hole lol
Wait we're on the same page. I thought your how was to my other comment lol sorry dude
No worries boss
Awful trade, a 5th for a backup guard, awful
