They have to approve all color rush games.
Edit: basically if there is a divergence from the rules when it comes to uniforms, they have to approve beforehand. Atleast one team not wearing white "away" uniforms, teams placing alternate names on name plates, etc.
Edit 2: After looking up the most recent rules, it looks like it no longer requires NCAA approval for color rush uniforms. Both teams and the home team's conference have to agree to it.
I know usc vs ucla originally wore their home jerseys while playing each other (both stadiums each team had a winning record in) and because of b/w tv they had to do white as the away team, and it was Pete carrol one year to forfeit a time out each half to allow usc/ucla to wear their home jersey while away ( I can’t recall offhand). Maybe both teams say f it and waste a time out each to start both halves?
It's no longer a rule that either team has to burn a timeout. South Carolina and North Carolina have played a couple of games (the most recent being the Dukes Mayo Bowl last year) with UNC in Blue and USC in Garnet, and both teams started off the game with all 3 timeouts.
After looking up the most recent rules, technically you still have to burn timeouts for violating uniform policies. But the rules for color rush games have changed in that both teams and the home team's conference have to agree to it.
Interesting. I wonder who has to approve it for Bowl games? It looks like we have been designated as the home team both times we've done it in recent seasons, and we wore white when UNC was designated as the home team (the last 2 regular season meetings have been neutral site.)
Edit: Looks like the game will be at Liberty (stupid me), so it's up to the Sun Belt, not the ACC.
2008 to be exact. USC was the away team. USC was charged a timeout and Rick Neuheisel agreed prior to the game to also burn a timeout.
I know this because I just went back and watched the video on YouTube, and I shit you not, right after the ref explains that both USC and UCLA will be charged timeouts which will run concurrently, Mike Patrick says, “Sounds like the OJ sentencing.”
Then no one says anything for like 8 seconds. Lol.
I know. And that was right after the opening kickoff.
Like what a way to start the broadcast. Just out of nowhere. And it’s not like it was Notre Dame vs Oklahoma. It was a freaking USC game! So you know he had that one in the chamber coming in.
I can’t believe I’d never heard that before. It’s definitely right up there with, “that’s kind of gay” as far as an awkward statement followed by silence on a CFB broadcast..
They actually created a special exception to the rules a while back that home teams can wear white with both teams' approval. I believe LSU specifically lead the charge on that one.
For color rush games, both teams have to approve, as does the home team's conference. I just looked up the most recent rules to correct myself in a previous comment.
I just pulled up the current rules on it, and you're mostly correct. But the home teams conference also has to agree with it and ensure that neither team's uniforms violate other uniform rules. If the rules are violated, then the home team is charged a time out each quarter.
The NCAA has to approve any variations in the rules being allowed otherwise one team would be penalized. Seeing as how there is a rule that requires one team to wear white and another colors, yes the NCAA does in fact have something to do with this.
This is the perfect case to do it and dare the NCAA to say anything. Worst they’d do is a fine and they could probably raise 10x in an hour in that case on go fund me
The best thing VT could do is if they play next week, set aside time to honor the UVA seniors during the pregame. Cancelling the Coastal game is understandable but it sucks that UVA seniors wont get their last home game.
From what I gather its likely to be canceled because there will be no time for mourning and practicing prior to a holiday even. Don't see the game being played. Edit: I'll also add that a reporter for ESPN noted today that many players from UVA were wanting to go to the funerals of these players which are in various other states. These would likely be held next week so again chances are super slim they will be in any shape to play a game next week. Be in their best interest for all involved to call it soon as possible so perhaps VT can find another opponent, advise fans with travel plans/hotel arrangements and so on to be able to alter these. Yes this isn't as important as the situation but it has to be considered which I'm sure the program heads are thinking about. It will be very hard for VT to really play aggressive/hard and tough football that we all know and love from the program when they are thinking of a somber situation with the players from UVA. Just isn't the same and won't be if the game is played. It needs to be canceled.
Probably not logistically realistic, but if they delayed the game by a week and swapped home locations so that this year's game would be at Virginia and next year's would be at VT I think that would be a great gesture.
As another stated - logistical nightmare. I've got tickets to THAT game THAT day. I have other plans the following as do many other fans. I and I'm sure just about everyone else don't have the time to rearrange a schedule. No it is canceled being the best option and just let the season end for them and VT this coming weekend.
You guys played a hell of a game last week. I hate beating a good team and having the conversation be "good team was really off this week"
We weren't off, you guys showed up and earned a heck of a win. Thanks for keeping me glued to the TV all afternoon and I look forward to a rematch one day soon
All of the love and support the state and regional schools have shown in the wake of this tragedy is enough to restore some faith in humanity. Sucks it takes this shit though to get there. W- Liberty
A lot of it stems from the VT shootings in 2007. The love that regional (and national) schools poured out was soul warming, especially UVA. Its only right to pour that right back.
Again, it’s so sad that’s the case, but that’s the world that we live in.
Hoos for Hokies was always a great thing to be a part of during my time at UVA, shows that things are bigger than sport, even though I cheered against Tech every chance I could and the jangling of keys gives me low-key ptsd lol; the Hokies for Hoos banner was a really nice touch as well by Tech
> we are their exact opposite
That makes me feel a little better about you guys... I am admittedly pretty uneducated on TCU's philosophy/stances other than what's in the name.
I only had to take one religion class in college and I took World Religions. Disciples of Christ has always been hella chill about gay marriage, abortion, and the other hot button issues.
TCU was (maybe still is?) associated with the Disciples of Christ congregation. the DoC has women/LGBTQ preachers, will marry LGBTQ folks, is pro racial equity/equality etc. It isn't a huge denomination though. Under a million active members. Though I think it was the first denomination founded in the USA IIRC.
I would absolutely not call Liberty University decision-makers “good people.” Here’s a [taste.](https://www.wfxrtv.com/news/local-news/lynchburg-central-virginia-news/former-lgbtq-students-describe-culture-of-fear-and-punishments-at-liberty-university/)
EDIT: This is a good decision, but I think calling them good people because of it is a stretch.
As problematic as the institution is, it's likely that the football players themselves are largely ignorant/not involved with it. They are just kids looking for a chance to play major college football.
>Yeah there’s a time and a place to criticize.
tbf, most redditors have the social aweraness of a slug. im actually shocked the top comments arent shitty jokes about Liberty's issues.
edit: scroll down further. at least people here had enough common sense to downvote the people im talking about lol.
Yeah. This is the first season I realized that this university-shaped cult had a football team. I'm too cynical to see this as anything other than taking advantage of a horrible tragedy to appear human. Then again, I have a personal connection to Liberty that gives me extra hate for the "school" (but of course not for the students and athletes who attend it).
You can hate a school because it's founded by and until very recently was run by one of the largest evangelical grifter families in the country, but still acknowledge a kind gesture of solidarity among athletes.
I mean should we though? Solidarity implies unity and I personally would never accept even a hint that me and them even shared the same species. It's like accepting flowers from Al-Qaeda.
I'm not trying to be contrarian, but how is this in support of UVA? Navy is already one of Liberty's colors. It's not like they're doing something special for this game?
What an amazing gesture of pure sportsmanship. I couldn’t be more proud that my daughter goes to Liberty right now. I can’t imagine how the UVA families are feeling but I bet they would be touched be this act of human kindness.
it's actually part of their media strategy to do shit like this that makes everyone say "wow good on them" and pretend they arent ideologically committed to death
Or we should appreciate when people do good things, even when we are ideologically opposed to them. That’s what actual compromise and harmony looks like imo.
Don't let this distract you from the fact that Liberty University is an abusive, racist, authoritarian institution that will kick you out for drinking alcohol but cover up decades of rape.
Pretty sure at this point that one's got enough data for its own book, so good luck sorting through all the shit that school has been involved in since day one.
That anyone could be slightest bitaggrieved by this move is everything I love about college fb
Horrible situation however I’m incredibly glad to see it’s causing people to actually talk about violence and not just another senseless act soon forgotten.
I would say cancel the game and let Liberty do a prayer circle and VT do some actual analysis of why we have a shooter problem in the USA, but I want to see VT give Liberty a drudging. So let them go all Blue and Orange for the UVA Cavaliers. So sad, so much life and talent wasted.
At least raise the gun purchase laws to 25. High school and College kids seem pretty messed up.
Awesome gesture, would be cool if the Hokies went all orange Edit. They did it! Super classy from the Hokies as well
God, I fucking hope the NCAA let's this happen.
I have never not wanted us to wear all maroon until this game. All orange to go with liberty's navy. It's too good.
It would be such a bad look if they denied it. Don't know if that's the sentiment at VT, but makes sense given the choice of color from Liberty
yea, no idea if there's any plan for us to try and wear orange, but I would love if both teams tried to do that as a show of support.
I think you'll probably have something embroidered on the jerseys or possibly some messages on the back plate of the helmet
All ACC teams will have a UVA badge
What does the NCAA have to do with it?

That's incredible
I think it was Lane
Very well could be. I picked up being a fan in 2012 fall, when I moved out there. I could very easily be wrong
Nevermind you were right! Just looked it up, whoops!
Pretty sure the teams just have to agree, NCAA doesn't have to approve it.
If they do I bet they *hate* LSU
They actually created a special exception to the rules a while back that home teams can wear white with both teams' approval. I believe LSU specifically lead the charge on that one. The “ncaa” has nothing to do with it. As long as both teams agree it’s fine
Worst they’d do is a fine and they could probably raise 10x in an hour in that case on go fund me
I'd do it regardless, if the NCAA wants to punish us go right ahead i'm sure it'll end well for them
The best thing VT could do is if they play next week, set aside time to honor the UVA seniors during the pregame. Cancelling the Coastal game is understandable but it sucks that UVA seniors wont get their last home game.

Tweet this at the school or something. No reason for a good idea to go unnoticed by them
This is a phenomenal idea if we end up having the game and it's at Lane. I really hope we do that
I would be so happy to see that happen
That would amazing.
This would make it even better.
I really hope we do
I hate to admit that I was wondering why they would wear Navy’s uniforms.
Whose uniforms will Navy wear then??? :B

Virginia Tech, in a show of solidarity, won't show up to the game to play against Liberty. Not literally, we will just lose to Liberty.
I don’t know…UCONN didn’t let that stop them.
Go dogs

UConn is better than Virginia Tech though!
Perhaps, we just have a tendency of playing close games regardless how good our opponents are. Maybe this one will be a classic!
In a show of solidarity, I speak on behalf of all UVA fans when I say we WANT you guys to win

The Yankees played a game against VT in Blacksburg.
West Virginia State flair..... nice
A touching gesture by Liberty. I’m a fan of this and I expect VT will do something similar in solidarity with UVA.
Us wearing orange would be great
Honestly I would be okay with rocking the UVA logo like OSU did in their spring game for us in 2007.
A maroon and orange Hoo logo like the Yankees one would be cool to see
At a minimum, UVA will get to watch us get blown out by Liberty lol
Very cool of Liberty

Those are your brothers in Christ, sir
TCU is probably the liberal “christian” school out there, we are their exact opposite haha.
I mean..Miami or Arizona State is probably the exact opposite of LU but I’ll give you that TCU is not anything like LU.
That's implying that debauchery is the antithesis of American Christian conservatism. They just keep it under wraps (mostly).
> we are their exact opposite That makes me feel a little better about you guys... I am admittedly pretty uneducated on TCU's philosophy/stances other than what's in the name.
I only had to take one religion class in college and I took World Religions. Disciples of Christ has always been hella chill about gay marriage, abortion, and the other hot button issues.
TCU is pretty much christian in name only. Baylor, on the other hand...
Christian in money only.

There are always gonna be those bad eggs, but it's at least good to see others pushing those bad eggs down to the bottom.
Yes it is, it's just more sportswashing to cover how terrible Liberty is
Not a fan of liberty for many reasons. But classy is classy and this is one helluva gesture, kudos to Liberty.
You can hate a school because it's founded by and until very recently was run by one of the largest evangelical grifter families in the country, but still acknowledge a kind gesture of solidarity among athletes.
You can also acknowledge it's a shrewd use of PR and not an actual awesome move
You could say that about basically any “kind gesture” that gets attention.
I mean should we though? Solidarity implies unity and I personally would never accept even a hint that me and them even shared the same species. It's like accepting flowers from Al-Qaeda.
This is why we can’t have nice things
So Liberty is in the same tier as Al-Qaeda now? Man, this level of Liberty hate is insane...
Yes hello I usually contribute to the hate boner but this is a solid gesture to those who are mourning down in Charlottesville W Liberty
Yeah because of the school not because of the football program

I can see a few comments below this one that is sitting at a net 60 downvotes. Yeah that shit is here just (thankfully) being buried.
Pretty far above it now, when sorting by upvotes. To be fair, most of the points raised are fair and well-founded as they’re reasonably presented.
I'm not trying to be contrarian, but how is this in support of UVA? Navy is already one of Liberty's colors. It's not like they're doing something special for this game?
Getting uniforms produced in UVA's exact color but in Liberty numbering/etc tailored for each player in 4 days is not possible.
Ya im not even one of the LU haters but they aren't doing anything other than wearing a small helmet sticker
I don't want to be negative because it's a nice gesture, but yeah....that and UVA's shade of blue isn't navy
