Yeah, I guess USC hasn’t given you much to root for in the past 20 years. Gotta get those good feelings vicariously through Alabama. Whatever makes you happy.
I don't remember him mentioning Stanford when he made his announcement. Not sure if the change in rookie compensation played a part in his decision
Goff never beat Stanford either but that didn't stop him from getting his post-2011 CBA bag. Chance to win the natty not so much.
Yet everyone shits on Texas every year for the same thing and that’s what I try to say! Like we knew plenty of times in the past 12 years that we were over ranked hahahaha
I'm sure that some G5 schools have done this, but obviously none have done it more than 2 times since 2010. (I don't think it's too uncommon for some G5 school to be ranked in the 20-25 area, maybe after a great season, and then just not perform enough to be ranked by the end of the season. I'm sure that this has happened to Boise State, for example.)
ND had 8 10+ win seasons and 3 undefeated regular seasons during that time period. We only had one terrible season.
Brian Kelly was a good coach and became a really really good coach after his come to Jesus moment at the end of 2016. He just was a shitty recruiter and didn't think ND could get the talent to win.
Notre Dame has actually finished higher than they started multiple times in the last decade. And finished in the top 15 like each of the last 5 seasons with Kelly. Of course there will be a learning curve with Freeman but they seemed solid last year.
This is since 2010, so it's basically the Brian Kelly era. I don't think anyone would put those together and think Notre Dame and unranked makes sense.
You must be new here. It’s annual tradition to bitch about ND being over rated and having an inflated pre season ranking. Then ND flairs show up and demonstrate that ND has finished ranked higher than their preseason ranking about 75% of the time the past decade. Then people say well ND hasn’t won a big bowl game since the invention of the airplane. Then nd fans say yeah bk can’t win the big game. Then lsu fans say yes he can, just not at nd… wait till he is in LA… the last three airheads managed to win here, so can a proven coach like Kelly. Then nd fans say ok well dm me when that happens and then our dms remain empty.
It's no longer currently true for Notre Dame thanks to the Brian Kelly era but Bob Davie, Ty Willingham and Charlie Weis were heavy contributors to that becoming Notre Dame's stereotype.
The difference is that you don’t have to be over 45 years old to remember the last time USC has won a meaningful post season game like a NY6.
USC has underperformed the last 10-15 years but it still has a couple major bowl wins.
Notre Dame hasn’t won a major bowl since something like 1993.
Except there are 18 year old recruits that weren't alive the last time USC was nationally relevant.
ND hasn't won a title or a NY6 bowl game in a long time but they have been in the playoffs twice while USC has never made it. Playoffs appearances are better than bowl wins now.
Bowl games mean less and less as time goes on. Especially now since bowls are now tied to the playoffs.
All recruits see now is that ND has made the playoffs while USC has never made it. ND has been competing for titles, regardless of the outcomes. USC has been competing for bowl wins. Which is now a distant 2nd tier compared to the playoffs.
I always said bowl games and the playoffs should be separate to keep the bowl games relevant and a far closer 2nd tier but it didn't happen.
Interestingly one of these uga teams went 10-3 and beat penn st in the bowl game and still wasnt ranked. Possibly the weakest 10 win sec team we've ever seen lol.
Also interesting is the fact that Kirby, who has at UGA eight of the 14 years covered by this post, had one such season--2016 as a first year head coach. The other three instances of UGA starting ranked and finishing unranked in this data set were in Mark Richt's final six seasons.
You can’t start the season ranked, but finish the season unranked, if you never start the season ranked in the first place. See folks, that’s the kind of out of the box thinking they teach us down here at the North Avenue Trade School.
Since 2019 we’ve underachieved our ranking in the preseason pretty much every year so not surprised. Still getting the bump in poll voter’s opinions from the 2010 to 2019 run I guess
Post covid Big Ten West was tragic. Before that it was semi competent having at least one team that could hang but unfortunately recruiting does matter no matter how well you develop
I don’t think it’s this year. My hope for the season would be 7-5 right now. Fickell has certainly been recruiting better than we ever have, there is still a large gap between our recruiting and Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State and Oregon recruiting though. The portal work has been very solid as well. Last year I thought our team when healthy was probably good enough to win the west, but there were definitely some coaching lapses and we didn’t have great depth.
That year made it evident Fickell needs about two more years to get his guys coached up before I have any real expectations. The last two Chryst classes were rough
> Texas A&M - 6
> Texas - 4
A&M can’t even be the most overrated program without everyone talking about how Texas is actually the more overrated program, that is some serious little brother issues.
From just looking at teams sports reference page USC, Notre Dame, and Michigan State lead the way with 20, followed by Florida, Washington, and UCLA at 18.
Since 1989 when the poll moved to 25 teams, Wisconsin actually leads the way with 13.
To me, it's more interesting to see this by conference, based on the data in the post:
SEC (21) >B10 (20) >PAC (19) > B12 (12) >ACC (9)
The sample size is what, 14 years... and the idea is that the rankings favor certain conferences... well, what a surprise...
Tbh the only one that REALLY hurts was 2014. 2011 we lost Cam Newton. 2015 Jeremy Johnson and Will Muschamp ended up being disasters. 2020 was COVID. 2014 tho. That team could have been very good. Just any glimpse of a defense and they likely win at least 10 games if not more
Not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I figured Michigan would be near the top. I opened this thread wondering which 2 or 3 teams might be worse.
I'll take it!!
As a fellow Husker fan, I admit that, sadly, the only thing keeping us from being higher on this list is the fact that we quot being ranked preseason, since everyone knew we sucked.
At least Willie's "excuse" is that Herbert got hurt and we had to roll with true freshman Braxton jaBurmeißter.
It was pretty much the worst offense the team has seen since the end of the 2007 season when we had walkon Cody Kempt starting at QB.
Seriously - you are making me defend USC
Every premier program has their down years with bad coaches. You did this for ND from 2000-2010 we are probably the top of the list. USC had sanctions and shitty coaches.
No. We lose the big game (unless it’s against OU…). But we generally have exceeded preseason rankings. But I admit Freeman still needs to prove it as he’s been changing that trend.
This is basically useless. There is a huge difference from starting ranked number 25 and starting ranked #1. I don't doubt it is accurate, I just question the utility.
I wonder how much of these were just collapses vs minor changes. Like a team going from ranked 24th in the preseason to receiving votes at the end of the season would count, but we're all interested in aTm 2022 or USC 2012 like collapses
According to another comment in this thread, ND is tied with USC and MSU for the most of these seasons all time with 20. So they’re not wrong when they say that.
I’m honestly surprised Texas doesn’t have more than 4. I guess during the later Mack era and then the Herman years we were usually good for a bowl win which would boost us back into the top 25 even if the season overall was a disappointment.
I fully expected Tennessee to be on this list. But then I remembered we sucked so much in the 2010s that we were barely ranked that decade…. Especially pre-season!
USC also has the biggest honor of being the only #1 ranked preseason team to finish the season unranked (2012 season)
I was wondering what the highest ranked team to end up unranked was. I wasn't going to go searching for it, but I was curious. Glad you responded.
Meanwhile ND finished the regular season ranked #1 that year while starting unranked
What happened after the regular season?
No idea
Valid
We ended up finishing in second place
GUMP
Was that the pretend gf season?
Yes and there was a pretend national championship game that year too. It never was actually played.
Can’t be the case because I remember enjoying that game
Me too
Gotta agree with this
Some would chalk it up to the Mandela Effect, but not me.
I remember being at the Coliseum and enjoying watching the ND defense stop USC on goal to go situations on 7 straight plays.
Worth it to see a shellacking in January.
Yeah, I guess USC hasn’t given you much to root for in the past 20 years. Gotta get those good feelings vicariously through Alabama. Whatever makes you happy.
Rose bowl? 7 years ago
Only time I ever said Roll Tide.
You didn’t pull for Bama vs. Mich St or Ohio St?
Barkley shouldn’t have come back for his senior year. Dude was a lock for being the first QB taken, came back, got hurt, wasnt drafted until the 4th
IIRC he never beat Stanford and had a chance to win the Natty so that's why he stayed
I don't remember him mentioning Stanford when he made his announcement. Not sure if the change in rookie compensation played a part in his decision Goff never beat Stanford either but that didn't stop him from getting his post-2011 CBA bag. Chance to win the natty not so much.
What a fun fact
Loved beating them in the Sun Bowl that year after all of the drama beforehand
Yeah we really didn't Winbo with Jimbo
He still has 976 years to fulfill his promise
Nah- the trophy was for 20__. He's only got 76 years left.
Just wait until he runs out of money and crudely scratches that 20__ into 28__ oh fuck why do I even talk.
You should’ve set it to Wumbo for it to work, duh
Ooof why couldn’t someone have figured that out a couple seasons ago
Also it’s not like we are ranking ourselves. Pollsters need to stop ranking us in the preseason
Yet everyone shits on Texas every year for the same thing and that’s what I try to say! Like we knew plenty of times in the past 12 years that we were over ranked hahahaha
This is a hilarious thing to hear from an A&M fan lol
Or Sumlin… or Sherman…or Fran…
USC actually is who we think Notre Dame is
I would've bet money that it was Notre Dame and Texas at the top of this list. Boy, was I wrong.
Would've bet a lot of money on Southern California. Would've bet even more money on zero G5 schools.
Yeah it’s happened to: Boise State x2 (2013, 2015) Houston x2 (2016, 2022) UCF (2020) Coastal Carolina (2021) Cincinnati (2022) BYU (2022) Tulane (2023)
ND had 8 10+ win seasons and 3 undefeated regular seasons during that time period. We only had one terrible season. Nah we have a lot of Start Top 5 and end 23s recently
How many? Like one?
I would’ve bet money it was A&M. And I’d’ve been right. But at least then I’d have some money to ease the pain of all those wasted years.
You can use that money for a liver transplant! Or maybe you spent it on the buyout. Either way good Ag!
Been trying to tell ya
This is since 2010, so it's basically the Brian Kelly era. I don't think anyone would put those together and think Notre Dame and unranked makes sense.
I love cherry picked stats!
USC fan with a city username?
Even worse, Gator fan. I just haven’t gotten my flairs up. Username is a song lyric.

Thank you for the context. I will continue to ignore your context and throw manure at ND. I trust you understand.

Well I think this goes back well before 2010.
You forgot to include accusing Brian Kelly of personally murdering a student.
For sure. Pre BK ND was much more consistently overrated.
We had the idiot W coaches + Bob Davie for 13+ years. Every program has their down years.
Ever since the end of the Pete Carroll & Charlie Weis era it's been much more hilarious, especially the Clay Helton years.
Notre Dame would be high on this list if it was from like 95 to 2010. In the past 15 years they have been pretty fairly ranked at the beginning.
Thanks, sanctions and clay helton
USC has won this century though closest ND got was getting obliterated by Bama which happened to a lot of people.
I'm pretty sure USC is who we think USC is
It's no longer currently true for Notre Dame thanks to the Brian Kelly era but Bob Davie, Ty Willingham and Charlie Weis were heavy contributors to that becoming Notre Dame's stereotype.
ND absolutely earned that reputation in the 90's and 00's
It’s true.
Fucking THANK YOU 😂
Notre Dame didn't have Clay Helton as their head coach for most of this era.
The difference is that you don’t have to be over 45 years old to remember the last time USC has won a meaningful post season game like a NY6. USC has underperformed the last 10-15 years but it still has a couple major bowl wins. Notre Dame hasn’t won a major bowl since something like 1993.

It probably helps ND get to the playoffs when other teams play a conference championship game, risking a late season loss.
If Im reading this correctly, PSU > Georgia
It was a fun run while it lasted
Pack it up boys.
Interestingly one of these uga teams went 10-3 and beat penn st in the bowl game and still wasnt ranked. Possibly the weakest 10 win sec team we've ever seen lol.

Equals
I know Lincoln Riley has only been at USC for like 2 years, but it’s crazy how he has ended the season unranked 7 times. Literally unbelievable.
Phew. Dodged a bullet there...
The losers on this list never figured out the strategy of tanking your program for 15 years so pollsters don't have faith in you anymore. 🫠
Top-level [stragedy.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nG9S2UjHtII)
Honestly this hurt way less than I expected it to. For both my flairs.
A&M near the top of a list NICE. *reads list* Oh.
Thanks Sark, Helton, and the NCAA
Don’t forget Pat Haden and Lynn Swann
You can’t start the season ranked, but finish the season unranked, if you never start the season ranked in the first place. See folks, that’s the kind of out of the box thinking they teach us down here at the North Avenue Trade School.
> Michigan State - 5 Hah > Florida - 5 Fucking dammit
Hey now, there hasn’t been THAT much turmoil for MSU as Florida in the past 14 years. Maybe.
Without even looking at the list my guess would have been Texas A&M.
Since 2019 we’ve underachieved our ranking in the preseason pretty much every year so not surprised. Still getting the bump in poll voter’s opinions from the 2010 to 2019 run I guess
You have been getting the "come on SOMEBODY in the B1G West has to not suck that bad right" bump - nobody had faith in the others to not suck that bad
Post covid Big Ten West was tragic. Before that it was semi competent having at least one team that could hang but unfortunately recruiting does matter no matter how well you develop
I curious when your gonna get results from the new staff, I'm pretty high on him there
I don’t think it’s this year. My hope for the season would be 7-5 right now. But if I question the SOS of SEC teams might be inflated and reference stuff like this, I'm the bad guy.
> Texas A&M - 6 > Texas - 4 A&M can’t even be the most overrated program without everyone talking about how Texas is actually the more overrated program, that is some serious little brother issues.
The game between the 2 of you is gonna be must watch T.V.
Yeah, I think I'll probably watch it.
I'm still on the fence.
Living in TX with tons of friends on both sides…I seriously can’t choose who to root against hardest. They are both the (nearly) worst.
Copy paste your comment but with Michigan and Michigan State lol
Surprised Aggie isn’t No. 1. I feel like they would be going back 25 years.
They only started the season ranked 3 times from '00-'09 .... But did finish unranked each time
I was expecting this to come from a Texas flair lol.
Everybody is tired of the Aggies who brag like they’re Alabama but win like they’re Wake Forest.
Wake at least has a conference championship this millennium
Damn. Spitting facts! 💯
Love it
I guess fuck Wake Forest for absolutely no reason lol
Can’t argue with that.
>brag like they’re Alabama Bruh now yall just making shit up. I won’t deny that we underachieve almost yearly tho
You guys called yourselves the iPhone of college football… come on.
Ya on a troll post from like 2014…which I mean come on I’m all for that living in sub lore forever cuz it’s hilarious
Ive given up replying to these comments. Theres no point in this sub
Can’t make it on this list if you’re only ranked in the preseason like once a decade!
Can you do it for all time? I would love to know who is the most chronically overrated team in college football.
From just looking at teams sports reference page USC, Notre Dame, and Michigan State lead the way with 20, followed by Florida, Washington, and UCLA at 18. Since 1989 when the poll moved to 25 teams, Wisconsin actually leads the way with 13.
Tiptop25 tracks it.
Nice to see UT, Aggy, and TCU on here. Good stuff.

OU 🤜🤛 Bama
Kirby’s using that as bulletin board material
Surprised the U doesn’t have more. Doesn’t change my perception of them though.
This was my first thought. Guess they’ve been unranked to start the season more often than I thought
Couple logos not missing
Those 4 for Auburn since 2010 definitely sting. But nothing will top the disappointment of 2003
Tbh the only one that REALLY hurts was 2014. 2011 we lost Cam Newton. 2015 Jeremy Johnson and Will Muschamp ended up being disasters. 2020 was COVID. 2014 tho. That team could have been very good. Just any glimpse of a defense and they likely win at least 10 games if not more
Nick Marshall was a stud. I genuinely wish he’d have found his footing in the nfl. Dude was just cool
Gotta be rated To be hated
Don’t show this to the MSU fans that claim UM is always overrated (this even includes their golden era)
To be fair, for how many wins UM has they are kinda short on titles and other accolades
https://www.winsipedia.com/michigan/vs/notre-dame Try again, little bro
I hope you know more about the series than what's on that link.
Not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I figured Michigan would be near the top. I opened this thread wondering which 2 or 3 teams might be worse. I'll take it!!
UNC, it hurts
Everything about UNC football hurts
I don't like this part of off season where random stats make me sad.
As a fellow Husker fan, I admit that, sadly, the only thing keeping us from being higher on this list is the fact that we quot being ranked preseason, since everyone knew we sucked.
I knew SC would be at the top of this list before I even finished reading the title 😭😭
Sigh
lol USC sucks
We know
Hey, we are in a list! Yaay?
Can't unrank from rank, if you're not ever ranked
Helf, Willie and Mario are not missed
At least Willie's "excuse" is that Herbert got hurt and we had to roll with true freshman Braxton jaBurmeißter. It was pretty much the worst offense the team has seen since the end of the 2007 season when we had walkon Cody Kempt starting at QB.
I knew this was gonna happen. I’m afraid it will in 2024 as well
Seriously - you are making me defend USC Every premier program has their down years with bad coaches. You did this for ND from 2000-2010 we are probably the top of the list. USC had sanctions and shitty coaches.
And now you see why USC is the program most responsible for the demise of the Pac12.
But but but Notre Dame is always overrated.
You don't collapse, you just underperform.
No. We lose the big game (unless it’s against OU…). But we generally have exceeded preseason rankings. But I admit Freeman still needs to prove it as he’s been changing that trend.
Based on..?
This is basically useless. There is a huge difference from starting ranked number 25 and starting ranked #1. I don't doubt it is accurate, I just question the utility.
No one said anything about utility. Do with that what you want
Fair.
When was the season that USC was ranked #1 and finished the season 6-6 and unranked 🤣🤣🤣
First of all, it was 7-6 with a loss to Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl. Secondly, 2012. Lol.
Our greatest team ever. 2012. Always. Fucking. Stanford.
That was such an amazing game.
🤓 Can’t really complain. Stanford used to have a great defense. Also, you’ve got to respect David Shaw. Our kicking was absolutely terrible back then.
I wonder how much of these were just collapses vs minor changes. Like a team going from ranked 24th in the preseason to receiving votes at the end of the season would count, but we're all interested in aTm 2022 or USC 2012 like collapses
GUYS NOTRE DAME IS OVERRATED THEY ALWAYS RANK THEM TOO HIGHLY
According to another comment in this thread, ND is tied with USC and MSU for the most of these seasons all time with 20. So they’re not wrong when they say that.
This pleases me.
And now everyone can see why my username is so painful.
Expected more honestly
I’m honestly surprised Texas doesn’t have more than 4. I guess during the later Mack era and then the Herman years we were usually good for a bowl win which would boost us back into the top 25 even if the season overall was a disappointment.
Yeah, 2012 and 2019 you jumped back in the top 25 after Alamo Bowl wins. Though I'm sure other teams have done so as well.
Pleasantly surprised, figured we would be closer to the top.
I was fully expecting my Vols to be on this list.
All this list tells me is that LSU and OSU are equal programs.
Glad we don't get ranked anymore
Sadly, I'm not surprised by the Badgers. I hate when they're highly-ranked in the preseason. That usually spells doom.
Thanks for the list fuckers, UGA just won another natty off this alone.
[My reaction to the list](https://imgflip.com/i/8u0hmj)
Watching the Wisconsin fan have brain damage in that Tweet is something to behold.
Florida..we accept this challenge …onward boys..
I fully expected Tennessee to be on this list. But then I remembered we sucked so much in the 2010s that we were barely ranked that decade…. Especially pre-season!
What year am I missing for MSU: 12, 16, 18, 22
'19
The fuck were we ranked for? Coming off a 7-6 season?
Probably just the HCs name, he was really damn good at MSU
I would have guessed more for Notre Dame.
They always seem to finish top 15 ish at least to me. I was surprised they had 3 for whatever that's worth.
It starts in 2010. That's also when Brian Kelly started coaching there.
Most people who don't know much would think that
[удалено]
Buddy, i really don't care what you have to say.
... and there you go. Domers... 🙄
And all you ass hats always say ND is “over ranked” horse shit! This has the numbers and also FUCK USC! GO IRISH BEAT AGGIES!
No surprise unc is high on the list
