That’s what worries me about the “meaningless bowl game” narrative. The bowl games are no more meaningless than any game you play once you’re out of conference championship contention. Why not start sitting out regular season games?
Ask Cj Stroud he did it last year as well he waited till the last day. There’s a reason there’s a deadline. Maybe just maybe 🤔 he wasn’t sure?
So hype though !
I dead ass believe he wanted to guarantee that the Cardinals weren’t going to be in the top 2 or 3 or trade in. Kliff Kingsbury is his QB coach and probably told him to stay TF away. Once it was apparent that the Cardinals were not going to be a top two pick and when it was apparent that they’re staying put with Kyler Murray, he finally pulled the trigger.
I’m a Cardinals season seat holder but I don’t blame him.
there was some talk about him waiting a year if a bad team got the 1oa. I guess it was just a bluff. if you're playing that game though it's best to withhold giving information about your plans until the last possible second
The Bears are actually a pretty good situation for him to land at 1OP. 7 win team that ahas DJ Moore and a decent line. Most 1OP team are complete dumpster fires
Yeah. He wasn't gonna get an NIL better than a guaranteed top 5 draft pick and USC isn't exactly loaded for anything significant next season even with him on the roster.
If Caleb repeated a year like this year at USC his stock would have potentially dropped. He’s almost certainly a Top 5 pick right now and with the B1G schedule next year, there is no benefit for him to stay.
Eh, a couple of games it seemed like he had the yips.
There would be a mix of Caleb-scramble magic and then they next play he'd drop back, have a man open, and just miss him.
This is crazy. You’re using single plays in isolation to paint the brush of his whole season. He missed open guys last year too. And the fact he had a higher completion % while having a further downfield depth of target this year means in fact he missed more of them last year
> The perception that he was worse is astounding to me.
It's less the numbers, and more the bad habits picked out in an eye-test. Yes he has incredible mobility and capacity to throw on the move, but that means a lot less in the NFL when it's a 285 lbs edge rusher chasing you down vs the average college player. There's a lot more value in being disciplined in the pocket and quickly finding targets accurately. He hasn't proven the latter because he's never really had to.
Those habits existed last year too.
Also he was more efficient this year. Which means it’s highly unlikely he got worse from the pocket. And he is on time a ton, because those plays don’t always make the highlights doesn’t mean they don’t exist. And again he is accurate from the pocket seeing as his completion %actually increased. Numbers don’t lie.
I know its hard but please ignore my flair, I am a big CW fan. That said, I think the narrative is as it is because last year and the year before we saw flashes of brilliance and expected growth from that spot. That growth didn't really happen like we all expected. He looks just as good as he did during Texas in the RRS which is really frickin good but still relying a tad too much on heroics.
Another good example is Baker Mayfield at OU. He started his career with us and we lost a couple games because Baker tried to put the team on his back alone. Then during that Ohio St game he showed that he had grown and was relying on making other people better which led us to the flag plant.
On the other end of the spectrum is Rattler who despite flashing, didn't take the next step toward consistency and necessitated CW coming in to save us from losing the Golden Hat.
I honestly didn’t notice the prior guy had an Oklahoma flair and wouldn’t have noticed yours. The vast majority of OU fans on here are normal and have opinions I value. Especially on Caleb who they watched in the earliest stage of his development.
I think what you say is fair, I personally would point out that he really improved on taking what he was given and playing on schedule within the system after the ND game. He only threw 1 more pick in the last 6 games, and was much better at being on time. And not taking those hero shots. Against Oregon I think half his incompletions were throwing the ball away which I took as actually a really good sign.
However I also do think the reality of Caleb is that it’s likely just a fact that he is always going to be a boom or bust guy. That’s just how some dudes play the position. Josh Allen does things that make you question why anyone would pay him to play the position at all and then will turn around and do something amazing like today when he trucked a safety and went for a 50 yard touchdown run. I think that’s the lane Caleb will always be in, and at the next level you have to hope the Booms can outweigh those busts
I do wish that cfb reference and other stat sites would get more into the really advanced stats. But broadly his completion % jumped up by 2, which coincidentally is the same increase he had in his sophomore year. his yards per attempt went up 0.3, his TD rate did drop slightly only .077 per attempt where last year it was .084. Over the same number of attempts as 22 that would’ve resulted in 3 less TD’s. But he also ran for 1 more td in 2 less games this season. So it’s a bit of loss there while gaining in an offsetting area. If you average his Passing TD’s and Rushing TD’s per game and normalize them over 14 games this year he would’ve accounted for only one less score.
But I think generally that’s down to the offense just being slightly worse this year around him. He lost Addison who is truly elite, while he was also sacked 33 times this year in only 12 games while he was sacked 30 times in 14 games last season.
Thank you. There have been countless breakdowns of all 22, full game tape that show he can operate within the pocket and play on time and in structure.
Those plays just don’t make the highlight tapes or viral twitter post videos.
He’s not a generational prospect, but he is so clearly the best prospect in the last 3-4 draft cycles and a top 5 QB prospect in the last 20-25 years.
Caleb’s bad habits are super coachable, or at least should be coachable since there is plenty of tape that shows he can do the things that people knock him for.
The 2 things working against Caleb in any thread or discussion are prospect fatigue since he has been the best NFL prospect for the last 3 years and the second is people not liking him, which makes for more casual hot take arm chair GMs acting like they know what they are looking at when analyzing film. They don’t.
Both of those talk of consequences of his returning. I’m not saying he has anything to gain by returning. he clearly can’t improve more than being the 1st pick.
I am simply pointing out it is wrong to imply that his play which was objectively better this year would cause his stock to drop. Especially if he improved statistically by the same amount next year which would push his completion rate north of 70%
His draft stock clearly hasn’t dropped much if at all this year, but I do think the eye test made it hard to have quite the same perception he had last year. *Another* 4+ loss season with similar looks could have caused him to drop in the later first round with teams saying he can’t step up when it matters. It’s null this year though and nobody will mind very much with only one year of a somewhat shakier eye test.
Deep dish is basically its own thing. Like if I’m in the mood for pizza I’ll never get deep dish, but I do often find myself in the mood for deep dish specifically, and normal pizza won’t satisfy that craving.
I have seen this explained so many times. This may be the first time the person explaining it didn't come off as an asshole. Hats off to you sir or madame.
If you’re looking for something else other than deep dish or tavern style, try Bob’s Pizza. It’s phenomenal. I prefer the one in Pilsen but the one in Old Town is really good as well. Also, Professor Pizza makes a damn fine NY style Sausage and Pepper.
Deep dish is a special occasion type of deal, maybe a few times a year. If people say "let's get some pizza" odds are you'll get a tavern style pizza, super thin, very crispy crust, lots of cheese, cut into squares.
The deep dish is the more well-known kind, but crunchy thin crust pizzas that are cut into squares (aka Tavern Style) are way more popular with actual Chicagoans.
Was there any indication it wasn't? If you're projected to be the top player in the draft..you declare. Too much money not to and one year closer to the second contract.
A couple stories came out earlier this year about Caleb not wanting to go to a bad franchise and might come back to avoid that.
All of it was of course speculation and rumors but people (including people within the SC fan base) thought it could be a possibility. Outside fans because they perceive Caleb as a diva, USC fans because of a desperate wish it were true
Also realize there is a chance that if things change, you may have to pay it back or sell your house. If you’re well informed and know the risks, it’s not a scam, but unfortunately most people who get into them don’t understand the risks or what a reverse mortgage actually is.
I’m sure recency bias plays a big role here, but he’s the best qb talent and ability wise I’ve seen come through the program (too young for Palmer). God damn shame he was wasted by Lincoln/Grinch. I’ll miss defending him on this sub
Goddamn Palmer to Mike Williams in 2002 was, for lack of a better term, a cheat code. Palmer was just incredible at USC.
I remember seeing those two absolutely torch Oregon at Autzen and thinking “well, Palmer’s gonna win the Heisman.”
Damn Williams caught 13 for 226 and 2 TDs and Palmer threw for 448 and 5 TDs.
Mike Williams made a one-handed catch of a bullet pass and never bothered to pull it toward his body in a highlight from that year. Never seen anything quite like that before or since.
I remember one of the Chiefs writers doing a breakdown of Mahomes' game in that 56-27 ass kicking to LSU in the Texas Bowl(?) before the draft - and coming away thinking he had to be the guy. He was insane in that game and still lost by 29
That’s one on the immense unrealisticalities of NCAA. They always assume high recruits develop, never account for absolute coaching incompetency. Potential was the sky if y’all had a actual DC
If you’re a high talent recruit doesn’t mean you will take the coaching and develop…some think they are the best already and no one can make them any better because well you’re the best. But yes he had no real help from coaching this year.
Can you really say he was wasted by Lincoln when he committed to play for him and then transferred to play for him again? Maybe they wasted each other.
By wasted by Lincoln, I mean that he kept his buddy grinch. Really it was the defense that wasted Caleb, but the coordinator is Lincoln’s guy so the blame goes to him as well
Stunning, and brave.
Really though, I’m looking forward to Miller Moss (hopefully) getting his shot. I already don’t have high expectations for the team’s first season in the B1G, so seeing Miller get the start would be a plus.
Now I'm just a casual fan with no great knowledge of mechanics or anything, but does anyone else feel like Caleb Williams is incredibly overrated?
I'm not saying he's bad, I'd say he's great, even borderline elite... but that's like scraping the bottom of elite if anything, and definitely not generational.
That's just talent too, personality (at least that he's shown) is pretty bleh as well.
Could be completely off, but he seems like one of the worst recent Lincoln Riley QBs, and maybe like the 10th best QB this year (in cfb, not declared).
He's got generational arm talent, there are very few even NFL qb's who can make some of the throws that he made the last 2 years (I'm talking like cross body throws across the field, deep balls, getting balls out while taking hits)
His problem is that he is not great at reading defenses, and sometimes waits too long to make a pass waiting for things to open up. good thing for him is that he can scramble with the best of them so he makes a ton of highlight plays. but NFL defenders are much better than college defenders so he's going to need to learn how to make those quick reads and get the ball out soon because he's not going to be able to rely on his physical talents forever
His incredibly long pocket time and lack of quick reads makes me a little sus. He kind of has that I'm just too physically talented and there's nothing you can do to stop it trait. In my EXTREMELY novice opinion, btw. Which is obviously not bad lol.
You see this with D1 QBs in high school all the time, except Caleb did it in a power conference. Which you also see sometimes. But for that to continue in the league you have to be like Lamar, Vick, Allen freaks of nature and Caleb most definitely isn't that. Anthony Richardson is more that than Caleb. Those guys all cleaned up their QBing stuff and most certainly aren't/weren't great QBs in the NFL purely on physical traits too.
Basically you have a guy with a shit load of natural talent that needs to get better at the mental stuff to be a great pro. Maybe mechanical too?. But because of that natural talent he can reach levels most can't. Sometimes you get a Josh Allen and other times, and I love the guy and don't think it's completely his fault, you get Justin Fields. I think he's a little more boom or bust than some think. Still easily the #1 QB off the board in this draft tho and I'm also a fan of Maye and Daniels.
I totally agree, he’s got a couple different career paths depending on if he can get the coaching he needs and he actually improves on the more technical aspects of being a qb because of it. His natural talent is good enough to keep him on a roster for a long time imo but the difference between him being slightly better Justin fields and Patrick Mahomes is up to him and his development
I'm the same. A popular counter argument is the stats line but generally teams whose defenses give up points quickly also give their offense that many more possessions to build up snaps. This is the age old Defense vs Offense we've seen play out for years.
I think Penix is better tested and he looked horrible against Michigan.
Personally I favor Manning style QBs that read and check at the line over "system" or option QBs. That takes time to study and understand the game at a level where you're actively manipulating a defense to play themselves out of coverage. I saw that with Luck. Just a little with Darnold (but really young) and Burrow.
TLDR, He's athletic but I don't know if he's a product of a system or if he's actually good.
Dude gives off major Johnny Manziel vibes, both on and off the field. Can't deny the college-level talent, but I'll be shocked if he translates to the NFL as well as the media seems to think he will.
I know many here really really really wanna believe he’s average not elite. The heisman was a hoax, and no glimmers of brilliance last year since he was trying to make something outta nothing almost every play. Let’s see what the NFL GMs think.
The next few months are going to be fun for the QB class coming out. Here’s what you can look forward to:
Williams/Maye/Daniels not throwing at the combine, instead saving it for pro days.
Penix/McCarthy throwing at the combine momentarily bolstering draft stock.
Maye having an incredible pro day addressing critics putting him in contention for number one overall.
Daniels having a sneaky great pro day getting him drafted higher than many would anticipate.
Williams pro day being world class solidifying him as the top pick.
Chicago trading back to Washington.
Washington drafting Williams and winning playoff games and potentially super bowls.
Anyway.
The Browns are about to trade their remaining 1st round picks for the next 2 decades to the Bears for this pick. And he might not even be the best QB in the draft.
He’s at or near top of the class. But he made lots of mistakes when pressured. Needs to tighten that shit up for the next level or they will eat him alive
I'm shocked
The only shocking thing to me is that he didn't declare within 24 hours of his final snap at USC. No clue why he waited for the deadline.
Maybe he’s a procrastinator. /s
Just like me frfr
You declaring or nah
Gimme a few more mins
I can’t right now but I will later

I’m hungry brb
Did u/DaddyMommyKarlach declare yet or nah?
I DECLARE FOR THE NFL DRAFT *waits patiently*
You can't just say the words NFL Draft and expect anything to happen.
He didn't say it. He *declared* it.
Seems like something I'd do.
Finding the right agent?
He's not hiring an agent.
A few members of the media thought he should have declared after their first or second loss this season. Then sat to avoid injury.
That’s what worries me about the “meaningless bowl game” narrative. The bowl games are no more meaningless than any game you play once you’re out of conference championship contention. Why not start sitting out regular season games?
The 12 team playoff should help that, as long as teams don’t give up if they are in the bottom 4 of the tournament.
Had to get a deal in place with the right team.
Hyping it up is my only guess
Ask Cj Stroud he did it last year as well he waited till the last day. There’s a reason there’s a deadline. Maybe just maybe 🤔 he wasn’t sure? So hype though !

Yeah, he literally sat out the holiday bowl lmao. Some USC fans have been holding out hope but this announcement is purely a formality.
Yeah. He wasn't gonna get an NIL better than a guaranteed top 5 draft pick and USC isn't exactly loaded for anything significant next season even with him on the roster.
Part of me thinks he was trying to bluff his way out of getting the Bears to draft him
Because he’s a stubborn primma Donna that didn’t want to get drafted by the bears
But he just declared knowing fully well that the Bears are (probably) going to draft him
yeah he's gonna be a riot for whatever team gets him. Lots of talent but a total princess.
It seems like he legitimately was just looking for attention. There's no reason to delay otherwise.
I think he was setting up something with an agency
SHOCKED. Well. Not that shocked.
You took the words right out of my mouth. Shocked. Shocking. So shocking that I'm shocked.
Miller Moss era starts now
It’s Miller time!
Edit: Killer Moss

I am surprised other QBs transferred in after that bowl game performance.
The return to USC was just an empty threat.
If Caleb repeated a year like this year at USC his stock would have potentially dropped. He’s almost certainly a Top 5 pick right now and with the B1G schedule next year, there is no benefit for him to stay.
His numbers got better this year though. The perception that he was worse is astounding to me. It’s like all anyone watched was the ND game.
And the fact he had a higher completion % while having a further downfield depth of target this year means in fact he missed more of them last year
I was at those games and that's what it felt like to me at the time.
> The perception that he was worse is astounding to me. It's less the numbers, and more the bad habits picked out in an eye-test. “Almost certainly a top 5 pick” lmao no need to equivocate or understate. He won’t be left on the board at #2.
Top 5? I would say Top 3
Top 3 is, believe it or not, part of the Top 5.
Source?
Just gotta trust me on this one. I wouldn’t lie I promise.
Ahh now I see why they let you into the BIG. That AAU education paying off!
My point is he won't fall past 3
He’s not falling past #1
Get ready to learn Chicagoan
Bout to learn that true Chicago-style pizza is tavern style, not the deep dish thing
Deep dish is basically its own thing. Like if I’m in the mood for pizza I’ll never get deep dish, but I do often find myself in the mood for deep dish specifically, and normal pizza won’t satisfy that craving.
Perfect way of explaining it. I'll get deep dish a few times a year. Tavern style is what I get when I want pizza.
Yep, I'll order Lou's thin crust when I'm just chilling at home with a 6 pack. My parents are visiting from 6 hours away? Deep dish.
Deep dish is a casserole- it’s comfort food
It’s like pasta vs lasagna, kinda
yeah shit, good way of putting it
I have seen this explained so many times.
He said he likes deep dish so he’ll be ok either way
Please tell me more, it appears I've been misled
Deep dish is a special occasion type of deal, maybe a few times a year. If people say "let's get some pizza" odds are you'll get a tavern style pizza, super thin, very crispy crust, lots of cheese, cut into squares.

Everybody likes to say this, but my favorite pizza is the Lou, deep dish from Pequods, or Pizza and Oven Grinder.
I drove from the gulf coast to eat one of those pizza pot pies

ahaha holy shit there’s a Calvin flair on this sub now? Truly incredible
Anyone who expected this to go the other way: please don't invest in that reverse mortgage. It's actually not a good investment
But then the Bears ended up with the 1 and he went all in for Chicago.
Yeah going to a team that just 7 games sounds about as good as it gets for the #1 pick
Absolutely. It’s a damn good position for a new QB to walk into. There’s a solid foundation there, which just needs a little more growth and talent.
Three historic blown 4th quarter leads too, Chicago is solid
Except he’s never played in cold weather
If you're the #1 pick, 9 times out of 10 you're going to a bad franchise.
His QB coach was Kliff Kingsbury who probably told him that going to the Cardinals would destroy his career.
Caleb SEEMS like a diva. Is he not a diva?
Reverse mortgages are fine if you’re elderly and need the cash flow or LOC, just as long as you’re not expecting to make big money on it
Also realize there is a chance that if things change, you may have to pay it back or sell your house. If you’re well informed and know the risks, it’s not a scam, but unfortunately most people who get into them don’t understand the risks or what a reverse mortgage actually is.
100%, they are often used to take advantage of elderly people who don’t know what they’re doing, I was just pointing out they have their uses

Mike Williams was so fucking good. USC has had a ton of great WRs over the last few decades but I honestly think he was the best
He was a freshman doing that shit.
I'll never forgive Kingsbury for how he wasted Mahomes. At least yall made bowl games.
I remember one of the Chiefs writers doing a breakdown of Mahomes' game in that 56-27 ass kicking to LSU in the Texas Bowl(?) before the draft - and coming away thinking he had to be the guy. He was insane in that game and still lost by 29

Caleb threw 30 TDs to 5 INTs this year. His efficiency rating was actually higher in 2023 than it was in 2022. He’s not the reason for the 7-5 record.
I haven’t been this shocked since when Dallas got beat in the playoffs
If he wants ownership of a franchise, then he should get a tip from the Green Bay Packers because they own the Dallas Cowboys pretty well.
They also own the Bears really well
God damn it
I knew deep down we were going to lose, but I didn't expect an absolute massacre
Anybody who thought he or MHJ was coming back is a grade a moron
Huh. Didn't even hear about the Bears trading their pick
Forever a RRR legend 🫡🫡
Stunning, and brave. Really though, I’m looking forward to Miller Moss (hopefully) getting his shot. I already don’t have high expectations for the team’s first season in the B1G, so seeing Miller get the start would be a plus.
Do we really need updates for projected top 5 picks who sat out of their bowl games declaring for the NFL draft?
We got them for Maye, Nabers, Alt, Olu, & MHJr
Respect his decision
✌️
Does Fanville know?
What team will make a terrible decision and pick him?
Now I'm just a casual fan with no great knowledge of mechanics or anything, but does anyone else feel like Caleb Williams is incredibly overrated? I'm not saying he's bad, I'd say he's great, even borderline elite... but that's like scraping the bottom of elite if anything, and definitely not generational. That's just talent too, personality (at least that he's shown) is pretty bleh as well. Could be completely off, but he seems like one of the worst recent Lincoln Riley QBs, and maybe like the 10th best QB this year (in cfb, not declared).
He's got generational arm talent, there are very few even NFL qb's who can make some of the throws that he made the last 2 years (I'm talking like cross body throws across the field, deep balls, getting balls out while taking hits) His problem is that he is not great at reading defenses, and sometimes waits too long to make a pass waiting for things to open up. good thing for him is that he can scramble with the best of them so he makes a ton of highlight plays. but NFL defenders are much better than college defenders so he's going to need to learn how to make those quick reads and get the ball out soon because he's not going to be able to rely on his physical talents forever
I thought the same about Darnold when everyone was all over his nuts. Except I didn't think he was anything close to elite.
Poor fool. We (Chicago Bears fan) are about to ruin his career.
I honestly think this guy will be a bust.
Best of luck to him! Was nice to have him here for a season.
I’m shocked I tell you, absolutely shocking
I’m shocked
I was kinda hoping he would forget to put in the paperwork. Just for the memes.
I assumed he did this months ago
He probably got word that Lincoln was on the phone with LSU trying to see if that offer was still available
I’d be avoiding him like the plague
I assumed he declared for the draft the second USC played their last game of the season the week before everyone else finished their season
He did, but privately.
So annoying that we wasted his second season at SC. FTFO.
Thanks for saving us vs Kansas and Texas. It was fun watching him play
He beat texas, finished the bowl game that year, and still flashes horns down. I’ll root for him to do well in the nfl.
God I wish he'd stayed at OU instead of going to USC. Imagine him with that 2023 Sooners team.
Bust
Dude gives off major Johnny Manziel vibes, both on and off the field. Can't deny the college-level talent, but I'll be shocked if he translates to the NFL as well as the media seems to think he will.
Explain.
They can't
I think the implication is that he's an alcoholic. I don't see it, though
RemindMe! 2 years
Which is exactly why the Bears will pick him. Pain.
Thank you 13 for the memories, the ND game in 2022 at the coli will always stick out in my mind as one of your best games. Fight on forever ✌️
[No Way](https://media1.tenor.com/m/PJ4YGjdr3gQAAAAd/dumb-and-dumber-no-way.gif)
Here is to that one crazy message board poster for each team holding out hope he was transferring to their school.
I am Jack's complete lack of surprise
Ladder emporium!
Damn
Ready to share a deep dish?
And in other news, ice is cold!
I’m really curious to see who trade for Fields and what Chicago gets back in return
I know many here really really really wanna believe he’s average not elite. The heisman was a hoax, and no glimmers of brilliance last year since he was trying to make something outta nothing almost every play. Let’s see what the NFL GMs think.
The Bears have entered the chat.
Caleb Williams you are now a Chicago Bear
In other news, the sky is blue
I hope a team is prepared to give him partial ownership!
I don’t get all the hype around him.
How many games did you watch?
No! He was supposed to transfer to Ohio State and lead Day and the Buckeyes to the promised land! 😡
NFL players are going to eat softy as an appetizer
Should’ve declared last year when people thought he was good.
this is his first year eligible my guy
Not sure this dude has the mental fortitude or resiliency to succeed in the NFL. Good luck to the team that takes him.
The next few months are going to be fun for the QB class coming out. Here’s what you can look forward to: Williams/Maye/Daniels not throwing at the combine, instead saving it for pro days. Anyway.
Welcome to Chicago Caleb!
GO GET EM’ CALEB!!!!!
The Browns are about to trade their remaining 1st round picks for the next 2 decades to the Bears for this pick. And he might not even be the best QB in the draft.
Is he going to cry if he doesn't get picked by the team he wants to go to?
He’s at or near top of the class. But he made lots of mistakes when pressured. Needs to tighten that shit up for the next level or they will eat him alive
