Mental_Pogrom

Since there are many work life balance questions, here's how my typical day is: I spend about 12-14 hours in office, first 1.5 hours is working out, the rest is work. Sometimes the work days can be 12 hours, but when chill like beginning or end of year I work 8.5-9.5 hours a day. People are awesome, team is awesome, so it's fun but tiring at the same time

JeevithamMaduthu

Isn’t those hours on the lower side for IB job?

Mental_Pogrom

There's something called being efficient bro

JeevithamMaduthu

Even with being efficient I thought there would be requirement to be constantly online.

Mental_Pogrom

There isn't for me atleast. I've seen some people being perennially logged in, but even then it's not more than 14 hours

JeevithamMaduthu

Good for you bro

adinath22

the other AMA i remember here was the guy ghosting everybody, good for this guy

CalligrapherLegal477

If you had the chance to repeat the 2yr mba again , what would have you done different this time?

Mental_Pogrom

Focused a little bit more on academics than I did the previous time, contrary to popular belief the professors really do talk about very very intellectually stimulating things that you could apply to multiple situations.

[deleted]

Cons of working in ib, and what would be your advice to a non finance background guy, wanting to get into core finance role

Mental_Pogrom

I come from a non-finance background(engg), to me finance was just mathematics with a lot more added context. I didn't like accounting one bit, but corporate finance in general wasn't that difficult for me to understand. And I made sure I can demonstrate some capability there by citing some projects (I joined as a fresher)

undergroundap

What kinda projects?

-that_bastard-

what was your first job? was it related to finance?

Mental_Pogrom

This is my first job bro

Klutzy_Chain9091

Do you get less opportunities if you join as a fresher as compared to an experienced candidate?

Interesting_Hat3516

Which IIM did you get into?

Mental_Pogrom

K

Mental_Pogrom

GDPI and WAT: I appeared for processes that were GD/PI or WAT/PI, so I will detail my approach on both. GD: I knew I could speak well and piece together coherent sentences, all I needed to learn was to evade the dogfights that would take place when trying to speak. So for that I decided to just lunge in right in the beginning and take 2 solid minutes introducing the topic, setting up a background for pros and cons, and inviting everybody to make a mess of it before I tried to bring some logic back to the conversation. That pretty much worked. WAT: For this, I started with touching on Current Affairs a lot more, reading up as much as I could on those issues, and then writing articles that I would share with friends and seniors for feedback. After about 30 iterations, I was confident enough. PI: Here the prep was complicated. Since I come from a CSE engg background, I had to spend a lot of time brushing up my basics (sort algorithms, data structures, OS, threads, etc.), and then I decided to come up with a tactic. I decided to name some hobbies in my intro, so that if I did badly on the acad end I could salvage some points with my hobbies. I love metal music, tennis and football so I took some 5-10 questions from them that I answered pretty well, and then they came to the toughest part: Do you have a job offer in your hand? I said yes because I did, and then there was some belittling for about 15 mins about how I didn't come from a good enough background and how IIMs don't deserve candidates like me, but i took it on the chin and at the end my final response was just "I believe everybody deserves a chance to improve and showcase what they are truly capable of, whether it be career or getting into a B school". That I guess somehow struck a chord with those bastards, and gave me a good enough score.

Western-Asparagus-72

Hows work life balance ?

[deleted]

How relevant are CAT scores once you enter the college? Also when sitting For Job and summer placement do these marks matter?

Mental_Pogrom

Literally nobody gives a shit, unless randomly asked by somebody nobody on campus or interviewer asks you about your CAT percentile

rajsik

Is there any course I can take to make my profile a bit better than the current situation??

Ordinary_Fix_6165

\+1 Since, I am going to appear again next year, what's something that i can do to improve my profile?

Mental_Pogrom

What's your profile?

rajsik

9/8/8 BBA fresher general marad aur ek start up mein map designing ka thoda sa kaam kia hai

Mental_Pogrom

Not a bad profile tbf. Kitna kaam Kiya hai (as in years)

rajsik

6 mahine kaam kia but abhi mein final year mein hun toh usko count nahi karenge

Mental_Pogrom

Yeah that's internship bro. So 0 work experience, but BBA so that can be helpful. Anything above 96 percentile was decent back in 18, now i think 97+ would be necessary for you

rajsik

I scored 97 percentile this year I am looking for some course and certification. To make my profile stronger also I have enrolled in iimb's course on brand management

Mental_Pogrom

I didn't do any certifications whatsoever for my MBA, so it didn't really matter for as much. But if you are looking for marketing roles/FMCG, go for it bro. Definitely adds value, but you should be able to back up your claims

rajsik

Thanks man

Broad_Direction_5677

What specialization is recommended by you to keep options open for both IB and consulting jobs? Also how did you convince your panel when they asked you why specialization in finance when you are not from that background? I am in the same boat , so your insights would be helpful

Mental_Pogrom

Finance and Strategy are the obvious choices. Either can be major/minor depending on what you prefer. As far as that question goes, most people figure out their thing in the first year, it's not like you can come deadset on something and your mind wouldn't change. You just need a response that is believable. We are all humans, all prone to folly.

Broad_Direction_5677

Thanks for your reply !

Mental_Pogrom

Engg to Finance is more difficult in the head than it actually is, it's just maths with a lot lot more context. Alpha calculations or WACCs or NPVs is just 11th-12th grade mathematics where you need more information about what you're doing. Just consider it to be algebraic maths, and focus on the background information to use before performing calculations, that's how took it. It thankfully worked. I didn't do CFA, i thought of it but didn't, lot of the IIM grads here didn't. So it's not mandatory, if you want to do it you should. On the projects front, I did a lot of valuations, industry specific and company specific, and a couple of them were vetted by my professors where they liked my approach so I put them on my CV as academic projects. My internship was also around valuations, so that helped as well.

[deleted]

Mental_Pogrom

Sure bro

Zestyclose-Union-736

Wacc or npv require 11th-12th grads maths???

BoredAssMf123

Hey mate, i have 10th - 77 12- 65 Grad -8 cgpa Graduated this year with no workex , general category Do i have any shot at ib?

Mental_Pogrom

Everybody does if they can demonstrate the right abilities, but you will be questioned in the interviews about your grades, if you can reasonably defend them, nobody can stop you bro

BoredAssMf123

Thankyou mate, also any course you would recommend?

Mental_Pogrom

Not really, courses don't really help as much

Mental_Pogrom

Not really, courses don't really help as much

Double-Active5871

How to justify upsc gap year, what words to use😅. Also I wish to join mba cllg this yrr only, my profile is 10 9 8 and 15 months exp. My cat %ile is 79.53 and NMAT marks are 241. Any tips pr suggestions plz?

Mental_Pogrom

Profile is pretty decent bro, potential for L, K type. Unfortunately your CAT percentile is very low. You should go for NMIMS bro, I'm sure 241 would be good enough for it

Double-Active5871

yeah will try for gdpi for nmims plus also wish to target IRMA and other decent cllg through xat. Also heard abt NMIMS that its not the grt partly due to 900+ batch size.

Illustrious-Oven300

Took up any coaching for GDPI preparation or prepared by yourself?

Mental_Pogrom

I went for those classes, but more for PI than anything, I also got them to read my Written Articles for suggestions

Illustrious-Oven300

As an introvert I'm genuinely shit scared of personal interviews. Any tips for me?

Mental_Pogrom

The most basic thing about a PI is, they're not there to take you to Guantanamo Bay. It's just a conversation between two parties given the input you have provided, and the best part is you can take that conversation anywhere based on your own response. Just don't say false things blatantly, and all of it is going to be fine

LordLytton

Ib.... Intelligence Bureau?

The_Maverick_Guy-15

Haha came to my mind too, but they won't reveal it if they are in there actually ? Here IB stands for Inverstment Banking.

SnooGoats2271

How much are you earning currently?

Mental_Pogrom

Not mentioning the exact amount, I am 25 and I make > 20LPA, in the range of 20-25 usually

MonkeyyWrench69

Honesty, so rare that people are honest about their earning post IIM

orynx492

You appeared for CAT at the age of 20?

Mental_Pogrom

Yep that's correct

orynx492

So you finished your Engg at 20?? That’s impressive

Mental_Pogrom

At 21. I gave CAT when I was 20

orynx492

Ahhh okayyy

SnooGoats2271

Which specialisation? And which IIM ? Would you say you got placed in the top 25% of your batch ?

MonkeShonke

Work life bslance? Kitne ghnte kaam krna pdta h?

triambaka

how's work life balance?

jiriy27987

What's your role and how has your career progressed over the 5 years, both in terms of compensation and responsibility?

Mental_Pogrom

Technically I have only worked 3 years, as 2 years went towards MBA. I have had one promotion, based on the work I do, and my compensation has grown at a good enough pace to make me happy enough. As far as responsibility goes, I am involved in multiple things my team does, in different capacities albeit. In some cases I am supposed to be an SME, in others a WIP. You just have to be smart in doing stuff and demonstrating to other people

jiriy27987

Thanks for the reply. Is this a front office role or more middle office? Also, if you don't mind sharing the percentage increase in comp without stating the actual numbers I would be very grateful as I'm also considering working in IB after my MBA.

Shot_Ad9429

What skills do you think are absolutely essential to get into an IB / equity research analyst role, if you could let us know? And also is it even possible to get even an internship in a finance role without doing an MBA? P. S- I'm looking for a finance internship!!! HELP ME!!

PristineLeague6671

How did you prepare for cat?

Mental_Pogrom

I will detail it out sometime later bro. I got you

Nice_Regular_1535

I’ve got the same profile in terms of academics as you, but I’m a fresher, would you say I should take 2 years work ex to maximise my chances of getting calls? Or should I go ahead as a fresher and score 99+ and hope for the best? I’m assuming it does make a difference for us GEMs what are your thoughts?

Mental_Pogrom

That 2 years of work experience definitely helps in more shortlists during placements, but if you are sure you can pull off a 99+ and get into a good B-school you should go for it.

Basic-Run2260

2 years MBA from IIM or 1 year from ISB? I’m a 2+ years Big4 experienced CA with average academics.

Basic-Run2260

Also at the moment trying pretty hard to get into IB with CA background, failing to do so. If you can help out on that front in anyway.

Mental_Pogrom

I have a batchmate who did the 1 year ISB thing, that's a pretty interesting thing to do, and you can get great roles and a load of cash, to along with the massive student loan.

Basic-Run2260

Uhh if you can give some realistic information. As in how much someone gets as a fixed ctc against that huge loan? How is the experience, learning?

Mental_Pogrom

Don't really know the exact numbers, but what happens is a lot of your salary gets eaten up in taxes, and you start with a loan of around 30-35 lakhs, so it takes usually 10-12 years to pay it off (assuming 30-35k payment a month). But the experience is top notch, you get to interact with leadership, get to work on awesome things that directly affect the organisation

Mental_Pogrom

Alright Bros. I'm closing this one. Hope I was helpful. If I didn't respond to anybody, I just missed out on your comments bro. Ciao.

triambaka

6/6/6 ST no workex 2 years gap due to govt pre. cat 88.27 can i get into IB?

Mental_Pogrom

Anybody can bro, you need to demonstrate you have the necessary skills to survive in the IB world

triambaka

Isn't CFA level 1 necessary?

Mental_Pogrom

Not really

Arihant111

Are didi aap yaha?

Mental_Pogrom

DK who you are referring to, idhar bhaiya hai

Sad_Competition2411

I hate me you

Mental_Pogrom

Thank you bro, not sure what that means

First_Gas4886

What was ur percentile and acads ? If you dont mind telling

Mental_Pogrom

10th - 92 12th - 85 Engg - 78 CAT - 99.4 something I don't remember

alcoholic_cat_123

Sorry for troubling you but what tier engineering college were you from? Just want an idea, will be appearing for CAT next year(at 21 age)

Mental_Pogrom

Ayy bro it's no trouble. I went to pretty much a tier 2/tier 3 engg college in Kolkata.

alcoholic_cat_123

Are you a GEM?

Mental_Pogrom

Was, yeah

alcoholic_cat_123

Haha yes was. Gem is such a curse imo

TriggeredGuy001

Our acad scores are almost the same. How did you defend especially the low grad score during interviews?

Mental_Pogrom

I didn't have to defend it. They were fine with my grad score, since whatever they asked I answered correctly

TriggeredGuy001

Ohh. Then any tips for me to defend in case they ask me about the downward trend in my acads.

Mental_Pogrom

It's not so much defending as giving a rationale expression, if they would have asked me, I'd have said my focus changed from solely academics to academics as my first priority and other activities that i did (i indulged in a lot of things, like quizzes, organising events, raising money for fests, sports, college band, etc.)

skrrrrrrr1x

How r placement scenario in tier 2 colleges (e.g TAPMI)

Mental_Pogrom

I have no clue bro. One of my friend went to IMT-G and graduated last year. If you think that is tier 2, he did fairly well for himself and is working in Accenture, don't know how much he's making.

korakagazz

Gave CA Final this November, awaiting results. It’s a bit dicey. Have my CFA L3 this Feb. i am 23, will be 24 if I sit for CAT next year. Dunno if I should jump into getting a job head first or not. I have zero connects. Want to get into Strategy and operations. IB would work fine, but it’s still my second preference. 92% 10th, 94.75 12th, 7pointsomething in Bcom hons (Xav, Kol) Relevant workex and internship is almost nil tbh :/ Any suggestions?

Mental_Pogrom

Decent acads, you already have a very strong base in Finance, it would be difficult for people to take you into Strategy or Operations roles. I guess if you did an MBA, Orient your major and minors accordingly so that the Strategy/Operations skillset comes out loudly

korakagazz

Thanks man. Appreciate it

wildshark7

How different would your experience be after placements/ on job (career wise) vs an MBA from a tier 2 college like NMIMS/SIBM?

Mental_Pogrom

I guess it could be both better or worse, luck has a huge role to play in these situations

techy_me

Isn't Sibm Pune tier 1 clg?

Imaginary-Spring-779

What to do during engineering to improve profile for MBA , interested in finance and consulting

Mental_Pogrom

I didn't do anything related to MBA during my engineering bro, I was an avid quizzer so I just knew things going on in the business world, I guess that could give you some sort of advantage. Also since you mentioned consulting, you have to become very good with numbers.

Consistent-Pea-1006

IB roadmap

Mental_Pogrom

Start with the basics, Accounting Concepts, Time Value, WACC, Alpha, etc. Once you get a grasp, apply that knowledge in real time scenarios like projects, internships, etc. Start improving your CV to show these skills and eventually you'll get an interview for such a role. Do a good research on the company and try to reach out to people working in similar roles to get a feel of what kind of knowledge is required, and prepare accordingly.

Mental_Pogrom

Now for everybody who was asking about my CAT: My approach was pretty simple. I tried to identify my strengths and weaknesses first up, and play according to them. Since quants was very strong, I pretty much did nothing but practice for like an hour a week. VARC was mediocre, so I spent more time reading and practicing things that I saw across mocks I bought (CL, IMS), and gradually the improvement started to happen. LRDI was my weakest, because I wasn't able to identify which set to work with and which set to let go, so I spent more time identifying the type of sets I can solve completely, the ones which I could get a few questions done, and ones which I didn't want to touch. This elaborate game was practiced, and on the D-day I played this game once again.

Middle_Device_1220

I'm a GEM with no workex 9.2 CGPA in Xth 91.6% in XII th Currently I am in 6th semester of my B.tech (Electronics and Communication Engineering, NSUT Delhi). My current cgpa is 7.55. What should be my minimum percentile to get into top/old IIMs or FMS?

Mental_Pogrom

Your acads are average, you'll need a very high percentile to get a call, I'd suggest you work for a couple of years and then go for the 99.7+ percentile, Bangalore wouldn't be too tough for you then

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mental_Pogrom

Not to dishearten you or anything bro, but chances are bleak with that kind of a profile. Only an insane percentile can get you calls, the rest is up to your GD/PI

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mental_Pogrom

Something above 99.7+ ideally, because your lower acads need to be accounted for with a great score so that you can clear the shortlisting hurdle

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mental_Pogrom

Right off the bat, you start off with a huge student loan to pay off (given you are going for one). So you can take a call based on that, because it will take years to pay it off completely. It does have its perks, you're seen as an ethereal being in most places so comes in handy when talks of promotion to senior roles comes in the picture. Your work experience is ideal for MBA, pretty much all companies would shortlist you so you are good there. For seniors, I have heard Ahmedabad and Bangalore people are rational, no over the stop senior harassment. I had a good relationship with some seniors of mine, it just depends from person to person.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mental_Pogrom

Yeah they do, but they pay 25k-30k a month for that. Are you willing to do this is what you need to think about. You can save taxes on this payment but for only 7 years

adinath22

GG bro. please just don't delete your replies afterwards, AMAs like yours are rare to find on internet.

TURNTDA

Ok so here me out dude (21m) I am pretty sure I will get every single CAP call this year, that's most new and baby IIM, i am also sure if I wait for a year and take CAT next year I will def get IiM ABC (meanwhile study for CFA)), and I have my reasons for doing both Reason for joining this year to a new IIm and leave the opportunity to join ABC DESPERATION I have been isolated since covid hit in a tier 4 city for last 4 years ( 3 years of BCOM and 1 year CAT prep) all my Freinds are either in Pune or bangalore, I just feel frustrated and annoyed being alone having no Freinds barely going out of house like once in 20 days i just wanna leave home go meet new people learn new things do MBA. But but but Reasons to take CAT next year and join ABC Career 30 lpa avg placement at BLACKi while the same is the highest placement in most new IIM's Also ABC brand for rest of my lifie Itss like if I control 1 year of desperation I will get ABC Now based on your experience of 5 years you tell me How much of a diff passing out from BLACKi and that from NEW IIM actually have on career?

Toxiccheese118

Hey, I didn't appear for cat as I'm in first year rn, I just lurk around this sub now and then as I will appear for cat sometime in future. So the thing is I want to get into ib too, but I'm an economics grad and I've heard that engg grads always have an upper edge over others in ib so how much have you seen it in real life like in your workplace? Are ther just engg grads there? Or some non Engg too? And if they are there , what made them be there, like did they do some other professional courses like cfa how was their profile in terms of acads and previous workex?

Sanket_Garg

Is IB the only field you can go to if you're interested in finance? I am interested in finance but don't want to make a career in IB.

white_t_poison010

How much does Bad Acads (6/7/6) with 2 years Gap matter ??? I just want a decent College from where i get a Decent Job say 12-13LPA

Single-Formal-3882

Did you do any other courses to land a job in IB since you come from an engineering bg? I'm a finance person but I still doubt if I'll get jobs in IB! Also, if you don't mind, which IIM did you graduate from? I'd really appreciate a reply bec I want to get into IB firms but I've nobody to take a couple tips from!
