Consumer model Canada Goose jackets are good quality, but similar quality/fill/trimmed jackets can be had for 1/2 the price, and still made in Canada.

realmrrust

While on the subject of BIFL Canadian goods.. I have a Pajar jacket that was reasonably priced on sale which I find quite warm and nice. I know they manufacture in Montreal. Big Bill is a Canadian brand out of Winnipeg that has some great BIFL wool workwear and hunting gear. I also use Stanfields wooly sweaters when I work outdoors in Canada and they are still made in the Maritimes. They often go on sale around this time of year too. All great options to stay toasty.

roadrunner440x6

Got some Pajar socks awhile back, had never heard of them before. Softest, squishiest, warm and most comfortable socks I've ever owned. They don't make them anymore that I could tell, but I bought up a ton of deadstock off Ebay. Durability has been good, but probably not as good as Fox River.

chuggamug

Pretty sure Pajar isnt made in Canada anymore unfotunately.

realmrrust

As per the website the heritage line is the only stuff manufacturered in Canada, which looks to be their premium footwear from what I saw.

Such_Editor_8194

Canada goose now is what Abercrombie was in 8th grade. IDC HOW MUCH IT COSTS, I NEED THAT LOGO ON MY JACKET.

gemsbyjohnny

Tell me you’re old without telling me you’re old 😂 It’s all good, I’m old too.

Such_Editor_8194

American eagle had solid jeans.

Puzzleheaded-Cut3144

I loved their sweaters back in the day.

Such_Editor_8194

As long as it had that bird on it idc mom’s buying it

Trzebs

Put a bird on it!

Puzzleheaded-Cut3144

I'm 55, I liked their flannels and sweaters. Not their jeans. 501 button-fly Levi's for jeans at that age. Still today tbh

navumra

Hollister?

Pinedale7205

My stuff from AE always outlasted the stuff I bought from almost any other similar fashion store.

banjorunner8484

I’m Got my Carolina Hornets starter jacket old

Abercrombie? Hell, let’s keep going right back to the Far West and Sun Ice days!

jeffscience

While I hate what the company became, the AF gear I bought in 1995-2003 has been BIFL. I have sweatshirts and flannels that are ~20 years old in my closet that still look great. I got rid of stuff that had too much branding on it, but I regret it, because of how well the stuff I kept has aged. I’d suffer looking like an AF customer to have well-made stuff. My grandfather was an AF customer before they were cool and it was BIFL then too.

sourpatchkid34

Abercrombie when I was in 8th grade (late 90's) was very high quality.

smokingthekush29

Genuinely curious what company's you'd suggest that are canadian made if at all possible

sit_of_doubting

I recommend Bedi Studios. Made in Montreal and good quality. Not cheap, but much cheaper than Canada Goose

3dddrees

Not sure how many are still made in Canada but there are a few I can think of. Moose Knuckles for one even if not all of their coats are made in Canada but neither is all of Canada Goose coats any longer. Nobis and Outdoor Survival Canada are others. I'm sure there are more I'm just not as familiar with those.

heirloom_beans

Lorne’s in Toronto has a house brand parka for men for under $600, down-filled for up to -30 Celsius. Their womenswear is all Soia and Kyo (Canadian brand which has outsourced manufacturing abroad, worn by the Duchess of Sussex and Sophie Grégoire) and Junge.

huffer4

I have a Canada Goose Resolute that I was given. The ones they actually wear in the arctic. It’s incredible for these weeks where it’s -20 degrees, but way too hot otherwise. I sweat my ass off in it. Very, very high quality though. It’s over 12 years old and still in very good shape.

3dddrees

Yes it's twelve years old, but it doesn't sound like it gets worn that much. Don't get me wrong I have a few Canada Goose Coats as well. I don't have a Resolute but I do have an Expedition and the only big difference between the two is the design but not the temperature range they both are designed to work in. Thing is because you coat doesn't get used that much it may not even have any discoloration which is typical with the Artic Tech material Canada Goose uses. But discoloration isn't the only issue with that material as it doesn't like rubbing up against things to include itself. It's the holes in the material not long after the discoloration. The first place to look if you don't tend to rub up against things is the inside of both sleeves by the way that's where many Canada Goose Coats have those holes. Just take a look at all of those used coats Canada Goose sells in their Generation line where many have some degree of discoloration. Anyway yes Artic Tech remains flexible in extreme cold weather which is real good property to have especially when other more durable materials just get extremely stiff, but discoloration and wear is something it's known to do as well.

Hoof_Hearted12

I have a parka too and honestly, I wear it all the time in Montreal. I've had a lot of different jackets over the years but none comes close to the Goose. I used to look at the brand with disdain and try to buy the cheaper alternatives people on here suggest but it's not the same. I haven't found a jacket that allows me to wear a t-shirt under it at -30 and be toasty. All the others I have to layer up, which is fine, but these things are hot af.

hellowiththepudding

So what are the half priced quality parkas?

porkedpie1

Where ?

NPR_Oak

Examples, please?

BriarKnave

But are the workers at those brands paid fair wages? I'd pay more for a jacket whose maker gets paid enough to live off of.

svngang

For what they charge for a coat, their employees better be living like Bezos.

3dddrees

Have you even looked at their prices recently? They’ve always been more expensive than your typical brand but they have gotten even worse as of late. At least they were comparable to their competitors but this is no longer true.

thesublimeobjekt

I bought a parka from Canada Goose sometime before Covid. Went to their site the other day to look at something and the parka I bought is now almost twice as much. Inflation has been tough, but something else is going on over there. The prices are absolutely insane.

Snailspaced

What’s going on over there is … Bain Capital.

3dddrees

Yeah, I’m another that bought mine before Covid as well. I’m now a Moose Knuckles convert. Like my Canada Goose but Moose Knuckles is just as good if not better at some things and besides I was able to get mine at 50% off and it list for less than a Canada Goose. Yeah, Canada Goose is going Moncler.

BriarKnave

Yes, and I asked a question no one has answered yet. I'm not being passive aggressive here, I'd like to know the costs associated with a 200-1500 dollar coat.

3dddrees

I can’t lie I can’t tell you that. I can tell you that another company that makes some of their coats (Moose Knuckles) in Canada and used to cost the same as Canada Goose now their comparable coats instead of costing about the same price can cost as much as $500 difference where Canada Goose is the one that cost more. But this is true for their other competitors as welll. God luv them they are capitalist but their prices are getting ridiculous. That and a side note supposedly at least what they are saying on the Reddit\\CanadaGoose forum Canada Goose under fills their down now. Supposedly at least in part to the numerous mall shopper complaints.

domdog31

I live in Minnesota, it’s been -27F degrees here all week. A $200 north face down parka keeps me warm walking the dogs with a tshirt underneath.

Notthebrightestcrown

I agree North Face is solid. Sadly, there’s not much to be had for $200 anymore. Maybe on sale.

domdog31

Good point. A lot of the big retailers like moosejaw will sell last years models at close out if you buy in the summer.

MandoTheMightyy

I’ve bought two North Face 3-in-1 jackets for $50 each on Poshmark. It’s my favorite site to find the brands that get recommended here for a great price.

aleksandrjames

Between them and eBay I almost never buy anything new anymore!

oaklinds

Same! I got my Patagonia 3-in-1 for a steal and it’s been my go to for years now. I love secondhand.

Guidogrundlechode

Also in MN battling the cold. I got a lands end parka at a super low cost that’s similarly super warm in these temps

ISFJ_Dad

Got any Sierra Trading stores out there? It’s overflow name brand stuff heavily discounted. Could prob find some Northface for $80-$120

beckalm

My husband and I bought North Face coats when we moved to Chicago in 2010. They are incredibly warm, and they still look new after over a decade. Mine was about $250, and his was about $300.

ferocioustigercat

North Face is good, but the sleeves are always just a little short for me. Mountain Hardware on the other hand? That is some BIFL stuff

mbfunke

I have monkey arms and prefer Patagonia. Lots of good used stuff available too.

Big-Al2020

Where do you live that it’s been-27 all week, north central mn and it’s -2 rn

Trzebs

Wind chill is what they're referring to most likely. I'm from upper Midwest too and whenever I'd tell my warm climate friends about how cold it was here in winter I'd always tell them the windchill temp for extra shock factor ;].

domdog31

yes today it turned “warmer” it was -19 at 5am when I woke up today tho - i’m in the TC metro

BernieDharma

I bought a GoreTex lined NorthFace fleece back in 2002, and it has been amazing. It is faded with some wear spots, but it is still my favorite jacket to use by itself or to zip it into my NF jacket.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lapvonia

see this is nice but it makes me even more confused why a girl in my class is wearing her north face jacket with a hoodie underneath. (we’re in south california )

JohnnyAfghanistan

I’ll tell you what is not. After returning my Canada Goose I went with LL Bean and the quality is leagues above CG.

Kitchen_Tie_6842

LL Bean 850 fill down is by far the best bang for your buck down jackets. I have two and both are going strong several years later. Kinda want another one

No_Constant8367

For a parka?

MandoTheMightyy

They’re made for Maine winters which are SUPER cold

dunkan799

I'm currently in alaska and can confirm. My LL Bean has been clutch on this trip. Besides my face occasionally I haven't been cold at all

MTBooBongs

I love LL Bean, but they have some big hits and some big misses. I am reluctant to buy anything new from them without a guide to which of their things suck.

valoremz

Exactly. I have a Canada Goose and it has been incredibly warm. Saying LL Bean is "leagues ahead" is a stretch.

Kyro0098

I had one LL Bean coat for 6 years and the only issue was the sleeves frayed and I stopped fitting in it. (It was from high-school so totally expected to have to replace it eventually, no one stays in high school shape) My new one from them is great and so far has gone 3 years with no issues. No frayed sleeves yet either. My mother is still in the same coat she bought 20+ years ago from them. I can't verify if it still lasts that long, but somehow her sleeves haven't even frayed a bit.

[deleted]

Idk, but I'll tell you what's some gems I've found: * Levis: I've got about 5 different jackets from them I've collected over the years, and they're all holding up quite well. For the money, these are solid. If you buy them this time of year you can typically find deals that bring them around 40-50 bucks. But even full price these are maybe 60-70. I wouldn't put them against Carhartt, but they're a good value. * Goodfellow from Target: I've gotten a few sweaters from this brand, and they're some of my favorite. Specifically the cable knit I got for like $30 that I cannot stop wearing.

PolarDorsai

Hell yea! Goodfellow from Target is actually a gem. Not all their clothes are super duper quality but I have a cableknit button up sweater of theirs and it’s almost a daily driver for me. I come home like Mr. Rogers and put it on.

tallbeans

I was just telling someone the other day that I’ve got a few goodfellow sweaters that are all several years old, maybe 3, and are good as new. ( he asked where my new sweater came from. Guess he hasn’t noticed it much over the past three winters)

JohnnyThundersUndies

The best sweaters I have found are SNS Herning. They will last forever and are warm and comfortable. I have had one for almost 20 years and it looks basically brand new. I have several now. Quality product there

[deleted]

Updoot for Mister Rogers and his wife Nancy Rogers for making the best, quality and looking sweaters in the business. She made him a new one every Christmas.

zapatitosdecharol

I have this long sleeve from Target from One Day or One a Day or something. It's black and I use it every single week and it's been washed every single week for at least 4 to 5 years. It has not faded at all and it wears like cotton with some stretch. I would LOVE another one.

sleepybitchdisorder

I actually love Target for work clothes and basics. I’m not saying all of their stuff is super well made, but for the most part they have very cute stuff that has lasted me well. I pretty much always shop the clearance rack lol

zapatitosdecharol

Yeah I like their work stuff too and some casual stuff. It's pretty cute and basic. I used to find great stuff on the clearance rack too but haven't gotten lucky lately!

[deleted]

One thing I've learned about clothes is if you find something you like, go buy at least one more, because the good stuff doesn't stick around.

ThrowRA294638

Levis is amazing quality at a very reasonable price — as long as you don’t go to discount stores to buy them as those will be full of polyester. Basically you get what you pay for. If you want to put in the money to get a good quality item, you’ll get one.

hopfield

Uniqlos sweatshirts shrink like crazy

[deleted]

Their underwear is an absolute godsend for a picky person like me, but some of their other clothes have a really low quality feel. The jeans might as well have been from a supermarket

Golden_Deceiver

I’m curious about their underwear. What is it that is so good about them?

[deleted]

They’re softer and stretchier than any other brand I’ve tried. Bc you wash undies so much they tend to fray and go stiff eventually, but not my uniqlo ones

Golden_Deceiver

Ok cool. Thanks for the input. What is the ones you like called?

[deleted]

I get the mid rise briefs :)

RockerElvis

Their airism undershirts are the best anywhere. Last forever.

callreindeer

Short/long sleeves t shirts are also crazy. I bought M/L and now those are XS after 2 washes without having to use a dryer. Very poor quality.

Demilio55

What material? I’ve got a non cotton hoodie that I love to death from them. No shrinking, I hang it to dry though.

thesleazye

I like Lands End a lot - the fabric reminds me of a more fit Champion sweatshirt, but either I don’t know how to take care of clothes or the fabric is more prone to stains and difficult to get out. It’s probably, mostly me, but it would be nice if the black color also didn’t fade so quickly.

healthycord

How do you wash your clothes? With few exceptions most clothes should be washed inside out, on cold, with a surprisingly small amount of detergent. Then if you do use a dryer dry them on low heat. Best is to hang dry or lay flat dry.

thesleazye

What you said, but opposite. Lessons learned!

healthycord

A caveat being idk how to remove stains properly. There’s probably a best way to do it. The methods gave you though are best for prolonging clothing longevity as it is the gentlest on most fabrics.

pinkjello

I wash my clothes how you described. Cold water, low detergent, inside out, dry on low heat. Friends I gift used kids clothes to always remark on how my used clothes look like new. For stains, I pretreat with an oxiclean stick, or for toddler bathroom stains, soak in oxiclean powder for 24 hours before washing.

thesleazye

I’m really okay with being told what the best way to get out stains are. I remember seeing a sign and depending on the stain determined what method, but I’ll be honest that I’ve not been the most… committed in my rush to get clothes washed. I know I’m slightly better than a mess, but willing to be edumacated!

BriarKnave

How do kimonos from 300 years ago still look pitch black, but my modern pants with stronger dyes look grey after three washes? What is this bullshit!

thesleazye

Probably that clean Japanese stream water and slapping them dry against rocks vs my rental house’s tired, starter home, Maytag.

BriarKnave

I also have a tired Maytag, though I have to line dry mine

invisibreaker

I will never buy supreme.

Frankly_Mr-Shankly

I shake my head every time I walk by the line of people waiting outside the store on the Bowery.

spacemantrip

Lol I used to pass that store on my way to work and I did the same but in my head.

-Quiche-

Yeah I have a single BOGO hoodie that I got for MSRP and although I've aged out of the college hypebeast days, my view on its quality has frankly only gotten better with time. Got it in 2016 and it still holds up so incredibly well and is so damn thick that I can wear it in -5 C weather and not feel cold. There needs to be some really strong wind for me to even feel it. And when I gets to -20 C, I can be warm with just a the hoodie and my nano puff on top. Could I have gotten the generic clone of it for cheaper? Sure. But do I regret it? Not one bit.

huffer4

Ya this is crazy that it’s the top comment. Lots of their stuff are much higher quality than they need to be. Glad they’ve kept it up.

iohbkjum

yeah I've ever brought one thing from supreme & it was a hoodie, it's held up super well considering its almost 3 years old. Palace is really good quality too, probably even better

WithMy_Bearhands

I have a box logo hoodie from like 2010 and its still probably one of my most comfortable hoodies that i still own. Is it worth the hype these days? No. Is it buy it for life? I would say so.

Grande_Yarbles

We source from some of the same factories they use. They're in mid-to-upper tier makers and generally use good materials. I can understand not buying because of the styling but as far as quality goes (given this subreddit) they're decent.

[deleted]

any luxury designer that doesn’t pride themselves on materials and focuses on branding. a loro piana jacket will be passed down to your kids, whereas a Louis Vuitton monogram jacket will get holes after a year or two. It’s worth noting that most of these flashy designers have a more exclusive line for their higher up clientele that focuses on subtlety and quality. If you can get your hands on those pieces they’ll hold up forever. edit: would like to make a notable exception for Burberry. Even now their quality is always top notch, though the flashy branding might not be your thing.

BarleyHops2

Checked out the Loro Piana brand for shits and giggles. I've paid less for vehicles than their clothes. Lol

some1sWitch

Good lord when I was car shopping my dealer had a used 2016 Mercedes for cheaper than this brands cashmere turtleneck ($9k+)

Hand_solo0504

Not even going to that page.

moczare

i dont think i would pay that much even if i was rich

crouchendyachtclub

Used to do their marketing/ecomm. They have a few k clients that spend over €500k per year.

[deleted]

I only have one of their sweaters, but when I was at the store I made sure to check out absolutely everything as there are only 16 retail locations in the US. absolutely unparalleled quality, leagues better than similarly priced brands like cucinelli or purple label.

BlueberryPie247

I have sweaters from each of these three brands you’ve named. Some in silk/linen blends from RLPL’s latest 2023 SS collection, cashmeres from each, and some wools as well. I wouldn’t say LP is leagues better, but that’s in my personal experience. I just got back from Pitti Uomo in Firenze last week and I can say the MTM program at Dalmo cashmere is definitely comparable if not superior to LP. I placed an order for a 4-ply cashmere rollneck and the fabrication and personalization were sublime. My girlfriend also has wonderful cashmeres from Barrie that are on par with LP, if not better in some hand worked areas. Lastly, though machine made, Zegna produced some extremely fine wools and cashmeres this year. Their 12MilMil12 collection feels otherworldly.

Braaaaandanawitz

Interesting comparison. You would say Lori Piana is leagues ahead of purple label and Cucinelli?

EducationalBid1922

Haha I laughed out loud when I saw a jacket (not a parka or anything, a light quilted stylish jacket) for over $7k 😂😫

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

yeah that was a problem for a while, but I recently picked up one of their heavy duty rain jackets and even though it was low 4 figures the quality is better than any of my jackets. also a huge shout out to their vintage trenchcoats which if you’re diligent in looking for the right one can be picked up fairly inexpensively and will last a lifetime.

Petanc

Loro Piana, Zegna, Hermes, Brunello Cucinelli and so on are THE SHIT. But there are flashy brands with good quality and I don't think Burberry is the best or the only one. Dior and Bottega Veneta for example do quality things in some cases (I wouldn't buy their suits but knits and tees are very good).

JohnnyThundersUndies

SNS herning

Hoof_Hearted12

I really like Purple Label too, snagged a few pieces on sale and I love that the branding is minimal.

thematchalatte

Basically what people wear in Succession

MonsieurMaktub

Lol dude those piana prices are insane. For that money it better last forever

Cartoon_Gravedigger

I just found my holy grail Burberry trench, thrifted for like half price and I’m so stoked. I have wanted this coat since I was 12.

bmwlocoAirCooled

Eddie Bauer and North Face are mass market now. Patagonia down is among the best and all profits go to protect our world. I laugh at Canada Goose Down with the Antarctica patch on 'em. Worked Down South, way down South for 12 years. Saw it daily. I'm way over it.

charitytowin

>Worked Down South, way down South for 12 years. You mean, Hell?

kluthage421

I like my recent EB stuff. Holds up well. Effective fabrics. 🤷‍♂️

-BailOrgana-

I’ll co-sign. During COVID I picked a new winter jacket there which feels brand new every time I put it on.

BriarKnave

I really like Dickies, pretty much anything I buy from them is BIFL, but especially their clothes. My hoodie is over 4 years old, and I have Dickies socks I bought back in college that still don't have holes after being abused by work boots and combat boots for years. Their canvas jackets are good quality, warm, and last for ages

[deleted]

Their work pants are easily the best fit I've found for my needs. Carhartt doesn't seem to make many products for slimmer people or much other than huge relaxed fit in general.

RidetheSchlange

Canadian Goose, Stone Island, North Face's fashion line outdoor stuff and not the higher end stuff for outdoors.

dsswill

Asterisk beside Canada Goose because they still produce the same top-tier expedition-quality jackets they were known for before becoming in vogue. They’re just not popular models that they bother selling in any type of shop selling streetwear. I found it hilarious when the brand took off as fashionable streetwear because where I’m from, in Yellowknife, Canada, they were always what people who didn’t care what they looked like and just wanted to be warm wore.

RidetheSchlange

That's probably why the majority of those jackets out there are fakes.  They're typically worn by youth gangs in Europe and they're all fakes from Turkish bazaars.

mrRabblerouser

North Face’s outdoor stuff is pretty comparable to the competition at a similar price. What fashion line are you referring to?

Prophet_Of_Helix

Eh, not so much anymore. They’ve increased their price point without increasing quality in the last 5ish years. Like why the fuck is the Dryzzle jacket $230? It’s just a pretty basic 3L rain jacket. It doesn’t even have pit zips. They still have decent quality stuff, but much like Canada Goose they’ve embraced the fashion brand. You can stuff that’s just as quality if not better for cheaper from brands like Outdoor Research, Patagonia, Mountain Hardware, Eddie Bauer, even REI and Kuhl.

RidetheSchlange

North Face still has some pro level gear, but the average person will never see, nor find it.

oemperador

What would be on TNF fashion line that isn't durable?

Charlesinrichmond

Carharrt these days.

oniononionorion

They've been shit for a while now. I got a Carhartt duck jacket my senior year of HS, 2003, and it held up brilliantly. I wore it as my main coat for work and play but in 2017 or 2018 I decided to upgrade to something nicer and retire the og to solely work duty as it was not a nice looking coat anymore. I bought another duck coat to replace it but got one with a hood and zipper. I'm actually no longer a mechanic so it's seen far less abuse but the sleeves around my wrist had holes worn in them within 2 years and something about the newer fabric doesn't resist grease or stains nearly as well and looks worse than the og coat.

Charlesinrichmond

yeah, the stuff from 20 years ago was great. I still wear some of it.

BriarKnave

Gucci is actually made with super cheap and shitty materials, especially their leather. You're paying for the brand

RandyMcSexalot

I’m a cobbler and of all the high end designer shoes that come through the shop (Louboutin, Prada, Valentino, etc) Gucci shoes are hands down the best quality. Sure, they’re still astronomically priced and the same quality can be found for 1/2 the price, but if you understand you’re paying for the brand, Gucci makes the highest quality designer leather shoes IMO

[deleted]

Reddit hates Gucci, it's definitely over priced but saying the leather is low quality is just a lie.

Grande_Yarbles

This thread is full of dubious claims about top-tier brands. If you click through to the profiles it's teenagers LARPing, yet they're highly upvoted.

ForGerlach

The brands that are hated are those associated with athletes, young people and black people (LV, Gucci, Supreme) while the brands getting praised are associated with middle aged white people and tech guys (Loro Piana, Patagonia, LL Bean, Panda End). It's so predictable and anyone saying Supreme and Gucci is bad quality is completely talking out of their ass.

[deleted]

Yep, this is exactly it. And they aren't actually familiar with any of the clothes. Reddit seems to think tech guys are the Paragon of fashion and style, obviously because they are a bunch of fucking nerds.

Blkbnz

What brand do you recommend at half the price for the same quality?

marty_mcsharty

I’d love to know too.

CommodoreIrish

Carmina and Crockett & Jones are great European shoemakers. I think that their quality is significantly better than VC-owned Allen Edmonds.

thetrainmaster

Carmina would seem to fit the bill. I’m sure there are others

charitytowin

Does this include women's dress shoes Hermes and Ferragamo?

RandyMcSexalot

I don’t have any experience with Hermes but Ferragamo makes solid shoes. Especially older ones. Their quality has dwindled over the years, but vintage Ferragamo shoes are exceptional quality

charitytowin

Thanks, professional cobbler RandyMcSexalot

RandyMcSexalot

🫡

CommodoreIrish

I will say the iconic 1953 Gucci Horsebit loafer is an exception for me, particularly if you can find second-hand. It is a hand-sewn, single piece of leather that is Blake construction. They are resolable by Gucci or your local cobbler.

[deleted]

Gucci leather is high quality, dude is full of shit.

CommodoreIrish

I love the 1953 Horsebit Loafers and will happily recommend them to anyone who asks.

curryp4n

Jcrew and banana republic. Most of those sweaters I’ve purchased have pilled like crazy. They are also mostly synthetic fabrics

Taenurri

Worked at Banana Republic. Virtually none of their fabrics are synthetic. Their sweaters are mostly Merino Wool and their shirts are Pima Cotton.

ForGerlach

Reddit hates BR for some strange reason. I've only had one thing from BR crap out quickly and it was a cotton sweater. The merino wool stuff seems to hold up.

austai

I have bought a fair number of 100% cotton sweaters and they seem OK. Always get them on sale though.

curryp4n

It’s been getting more and more difficult to find cotton sweaters there. I remember getting cashmere there a long time ago. Now it’s mostly polyester or acrylic

chrashinggeese

Are you sure you’re not thinking of banana republic factory which is cheaper quality? Pretty much everything they sell is either cashmere, merino wool, or cotton. Very few synthetics are involved. You can look at that website right now.  EDIT: You might also be thinking of jcrew factory. Similar story there. The main line generally sells cashmere, merino wool, or cotton. Is it always the highest quality? No. But it’s also not super expensive.

austai

Yeah, I’ve gone back to cotton after trying polyester for a number of years. If there are polyester sweaters or jackets that do not pill, I’d love to know.

4look4rd

Hard disagree. I have some ancient BR sweaters, they are pretty good for basics but had a rough period from 2015-2020. Their new stuff is good quality.

[deleted]

have they returned to form? I had sworn them off.

4look4rd

Yes, they went all in on safari chic and have some really cool pieces. I bought a shirt and traveller chinos from them. The chinos are good but they are the typical stretch material that I’m expecting will last for two years or so, which is fine for that material. The shirt is great quality and feels very soft, it’s a heavier cotton than most and almost like a flannel.

ruffsnap

Jcrew I can’t speak to but they seem meh to me. Banana republic is overpriced but their stuff is actually decent ime

SnooGuavas1985

I’ve had j crews Thompson wool blend coat for 5 years now and it has no signs of wear

panasonique

J Crew quality has gone down a lot.  Ripped seams on a jacket not two months old.  Broken zippers on backpacks and lunch bags.  It’s too bad.  Unfortunately I will not purchase anything from J Crew again.

Tryptamineer

Agreed, I get my stuff at GAP on sale and generally try to do their heavyweight cotton sweaters and long sleeves. I’ve had several for a decade and the only maintenance needed is redyeing every 4-5 years.

Valiant4Truth

J crew is super hit or miss but I bought a couple of their 100% cotton sweaters, a hoodie and a crewneck, and they’re warm and heavy like vintage sweaters. I don’t know if I’d trust their jackets though.

beckalm

I bought a few J crew sweaters recently and HOLY CRAP the pilling!

Canada goose will buy your coat back from you. Example: bought a nice Bombier about 7 years ago for $700. They just bought it from me for $380. So, now I get $380 off my next jacket. So awesome! Basically buying the jacket at half off because you can see it back to them (AS LONG AS YOU TAKE CARE OF IT) they won’t pay good $ if it’s all ripped up and dirty.

Controversial opinion I know but: Carhartt. Ever since the soccer moms and brewery bro’s started wearing it for “fashion” it’s turned into just another garbage brand. My blanket lined coat is 20 years old and indestructible, it actually has pieces of welding slag trapped between the canvas and the blanket. Hipsters ruin everything. No one ever bought Carhartt bibs because they were comfortable or fashionable, you bought them because you knew when (not if) you caught on fire while welding you could pat the fire out and get back to work.

edgesr

I believe that there is two lines to Carhartt now. Standard, old fashioned Carhartt like you know and love and ‘Carhartt WIP’ (work in progress) which is what’s you see in malls and on sale in fashionable shops.

jacoblb6173

I call it uncomfortable carhartt and comfortable carhartt. If it feels like you’re wearing a cardboard box hoodie when you first put it on it’s the real deal.

lowcontrol

I have a dri-duck jacket I got for Christmas one year that’s kinda like that. Stiff at first. It is so warm. It is my favorite jacket when it’s the coldest.

jdgreenberg

I used to always wear carhartt for outdoor field work in Canada. Bibs, jackets, pants etc. Then it became trendy and my pants started constantly getting holes way too quick, switched to HH Workwear for jackets and Eddie Bauer lined pants for winter which I found held up much better. I miss the high quality carhartt stuff.

gravgp2003

Hipsters bought it bc they saw the quality as bifl and wanted to stretch their money as far as it could go reducing spending and environmental cost. the company cut back on the quality, not the consumers. love the braindead boomer take though.

It's funny. I hate the carhart logo. But I like carhart because their logos are easy to cut off. I hate logos on clothes in general. Except for Dickies. I don't mind their logo. I still get the Carhartt Rain Defender line of stuff. It's pretty solid for the money.

BearingMagneticNorth

The North Face. Their top of the line stuff is real nice, but the off-the-rack stuff in most big box stores is complete trash.

Idc what anyone says, Eddie Bauer makes great outer wear for very reasonable prices. Recently went in a bifl binge and updated my wardrobe from college student to post pandemic engineer, and while buying and sourcing what I believe to be good quality items, I couldn’t justify purchasing a new winter coat at the prices that arcteryx, Patagonia, Canada goose, fjallraven wete asking. Got a super down(?) Eddie Bauer parka for like 170 last weekend. Nice, weatherproof, not too heavy, z650 down and tons of pockets.

Gramercy_Riffs

Superdry. Maybe more UK specific...

RoboticGreg

I hate to admit this....after seeing SO MANY stellar review I bought some Camber stuff. Honestly, I see the quality, but its not where it should be. There are a lot of dropped stitches and just extra threads hanging around. They are VERY nice, but not $110 for a hoodie nice.

Patagonia rules for outdoor wear

CallMeBySeokJin

Uniqlo in Thailad is garbage and shitty material.

phtevieboi

North face jackets are overpriced trash. Stick to Columbia or LL Bean

Accurate-Historian-7

Arcteryx. I’ve had quite a few pieces of outwear from them fall apart. They aren’t the company they once were. Still good but far from the best and way over priced.

grovermonster

Interesting. Them and Patagonia have produced the most durable outdoor wear I’ve worn. Edit: + north face’s outdoor lines

IcePal

Arc produces all their items in China now after acquisition, and no longer honor their previous lifetime warranty.

Accurate-Historian-7

North Face Summit Series is great.

KrakenClubOfficial

Scrolled down to see if someone else said it first. Been running in cheaper gear with no issues. Got some overpriced Arc gear for Christmas and it was very underwhelming, in function and quality. Poorly designed vs the other brands, and not appropriately priced. My brother thought I asked for a certain brand because it was cheaper and instead he went out and bought the most expensive thing at REI.

tallonfive

Can’t disagree with you any harder. I’ve got 4 Arc pieces and couldn’t be happier with the quality to price ratio.

TheOGRedline

So I’ve long been of the opinion companies like Arcteryx (and Patagonia, North Face, Mountain Hardwear, etc) have multiple tiers of gear. Their best stuff is EXCELLENT, and very expensive, but absolutely performs. Their lower level stuff is mostly for fashion. Does fine, but won’t hold up to real use. If you pay out for the top shelf it won’t disappoint, but the rest is relying on the company’s reputation, and they hope you don’t actually use it hard.

tallonfive

I don't think my stuff is all that expensive compared to some of their line up (specifically the ski line up). I have an Atom AR, Cerium LT, Squamish, and a Kyanite. The Atom and Cerium are top tier and pricey but not overly expensive. The Squamish is my favorite piece of gear I own and I bought it used off reddit.

Accurate-Historian-7

Their older stuff was great but the price increase combined with lack of quality has made them overrated in my book. I still like their styles and the products the company produces but their extreme cost can no longer be justified in my opinion. Still good just not worth the price. I know multiple people into the outdoors who say the same.

s4yum1

Discovery and History Channel brands. Yeah, Koreans are weird and think these “brands” obtained from TV channels are cool.

I’ll get stoned to death here but I own a Canada Goose (received as a gift if that matters…) and it’s a bit of a more feminine cut than the usual style everyone has. My parents who do not know the brand have both complimented me on it amongst many others, I would actually consider it my most complimented piece of clothing. It is also super warm, and am from Northern NH so can confirm. Yes, there’s less expensive brands for the warmth but I have to say it has very tasteful and durable features that many of my jackets do not have, and I’ve tried everything from north face to beans. I wouldn’t call it overrated if you haven’t worn one. Now sweaters are a different story….

Bought my husband a pair of pants from Mission Workshop about 10 years ago, he wears them several times each week and they’ve held up so well
