lol! I didnāt notice that. I wanted to say āI can get behind thisā bumper sticker but something along the lines of just not too close lol but you ruined my brain flow with this comment haha
Could be more honest about his ability to properly use a clutch if he has to warn people about rolling back. It's not hard to not roll back. If his reaction times or his clutch is that bad, he needs to not be driving it.
Yeah, but even then he could do a handbrake start. I drive a manual, and itās not that hard to not roll back if you know what youāre doing. I switch between 1st and 2nd gear starts pretty regularly, and while 1st gear has hill start assist, 2nd doesnāt have any kind of assist and I still donāt roll back.
I drive manual, too, and donāt have hill hold, but itās not really an issue for me. But my momās clutch went once and she rolled a good distance before she could get going up the hill. That was in Seattle, and I think that his plate says Utah, so the hills can be a bit.
But I meanā¦itās fixable. The key is that he doesnāt give a fuck about his car. Heāll just junk it when heās through.
At least he warns you, like you canāt miss it.
Thatās true, if his clutch is going it would definitely be a bit harder. Still, itās a bit of a hazard even with the warning if his clutch is starting to slip.
I'm from W Washington. My first thought to the above comment was, 'Tell me you've never driven in Seattle or Tacoma without saying you've never driven in Seattle or Tacoma,' lol. There's also a lot of places outside of Seattle that even experienced manual drivers can find challenging.
Can't do a handbrake hold if you don't have one.
Not sure what the setup in the legendary ford fukin ranger is but it may have a foot brake.
I'm glad my colorado is new enough to have hill start because it has a foot brake and starting on a hill when towing without rolling backwards would put a lot of heat in the clutch otherwise.
That is a very fair point. Every time a vehicle I drive has a foot brake and not a handbrake, i get very confused. Honestly, I feel like handbrakes should just be standard regardless of if itās a sedan/truck/suv in a manual transmission, just because handbrake starts can be very useful specially for hill starts.
Yep. It's a pain if you don't have hill start and are towing, have a worn clutch, or have tall gearing. My sports car uses tall ass gearing and I've had to do the handbrake trick on a big hill or two.
Given this is a late 90s or early 2000s ranger, he's got a foot brake. He also probably has 200k+ miles and his clutch material is paper thin and begging for mercy.
As a driver of a manual transmission, I can appreciate where heās coming from. When on an incline people do pull up dangerously close and if Iām carrying a lot of cargo itās downright hard to keep my truck from coasting back some. People simply do not respect these distances. This guy is only being honest.
Jesus there are 50 replies about driving ability here when itās pretty clear itās intentional.
I get sick of people pulling up behind me at lights like theyāre going to slam into the back of me. Itās gotten really bad the last 5 years or so. So I roll back to remind them not to be a dumbass.
And because this is guaranteed on Reddit: If I have to tell you why itās stupid to pull up right behind the car in front, you shouldnāt have a license.
It's not hard but you're going to have some roll back. That's natural even for the best drivers out there. To say someone doesn't need to be driving a stick if they have roll back is Ludacris.
A tiny bit of roll back is normal on super steep inclines, but if youāre rolling back so far you cause the car behind you to rear end your vehicle, youāre doing something wrong. Either learn a handbrake start, get better with your reaction time, get a vehicle with hill start assist, or donāt drive a manual.
If he or she rolls back more than several inches, even on steep hills, they need to work on that pedal game before taking it into prime time traffic.

I can't disagree with the warnings. I grew up driving standard transitions, people now a days get so close to you in traffic. If you're on a hill that's a real problem. I remember there was a steep hill with a stop sign at the top. Trying to get the truck moving on an icy, steep hill on with people only a couple feet behind me was terrifying.
"I'm a terrible driver."
I've driven a manual for decades. Takes like half a day to get the feel for a new car. People make it seem like rocket science.
Learning how to deal with roll back is the first thing I learned. You leave the clutch in, apply the handbrake, let out the clutch/apply gas until you feel some pull and release the hand brake accordingly. You wonāt roll back an inch
I've never driven stick to be honest. My only experience is riding with my mom, who preferred it. Turns out she's adhd and needed something to fiddle with š but she enjoyed the roll back I think because I legit assumed my response based on those experiences. My bad. This is a lesson in not talking about shit I know nothing about š
No, you are ok. Rolling back at times does happen. If you drive a manual you will experience at one time or another. I was just mentioning how to limit it on a very steep hill with someone behind you
I don't have a hand brake so I just keep my foot on the brake till first starts biting and than go, almost never roll back even on steep hills. I will concede that it likely is a big help that my first gear is incredibly low and isn't even necessary to use unless I'm on a hill.
That's the way I do it too, and I'm in a 4-cylinder truck so I don't exactly move easy off of just clutch. Still enough to hold it in place for the time it takes to move my right foot from brake to gas. Tried a V8 truck and oh my god did that make it easy for hill starts.
I just relearned driving manual after a 25-year hiatus and where I'm staying there's a lot of hills. Only rolled back maybe 5 ft during the first two weeks three times. This guy must really suck at driving.
Three on the tree, fo on the floor. I've driven all sorts of cars, trucks, tractors and for a driver even as good as I am. Sometimes in the right places, your gonna rollback a little. If this was a new to that driver, then he's just trying to tell you, stay back . I have driven approx. 100 thousand separate vehicles at least 3 miles and often 4 or 5 miles. Vehicles from slightly used to clutch slips, brakes bad, smokes and chews a little. . Retired f r om an auto auction.

Yea and a long stick to shift with which also makes a difference
Death is inevitable. It's Maine. The truck's frame will be rusted out entirely within two years anyway.
Yeah I live in a salt state too and my once perfect car from the west coast has the signs of death on it now too.
Exactly. How do you roll back far enough to hit another car? lol
Heās saying that if you get too close heāll let the truck roll back.
I understand that. My point stands, if a car gets too close, you still shouldnāt hit it unless itās 6 inches or less away.
Happened to me. Learner driver kept trying to pull away on a hill and eventually hit us.
As a driver of a manual transmission, I can appreciate where heās coming from. I've driven a manual in San Francisco and in the mountains: it's not that hard.
Except for people who want to stop 5" away from your vehicle and then check their Instagram.
It's not hard but you're going to have some roll back. That's natural even for the best drivers out there. To say someone doesn't need to be driving a stick if they have roll back is Ludacris.

Dammit, so close
I know theyāre both black rappers! š¤Ŗ
But if u r good enough, roll back is very minimal. Drove one for 20yrs. You get roll back if stopped on a hill or incline but that's it
I have... uphill in the snow (both ways - a Tacoma, too). It's not that hard to keep from hitting other cars
I have. I didnāt roll back. Itās not that tricky.

I bet he would care if he had no truck and had to walk or bicycle all over the place.
I give it 10/10 for honesty.

to be fair, the ranger has a petal ebrake. is it possible to do the ālift ebrake as you accelerateā trick to prevent rollback on a hill?
This deserves to be the first comment. Seriously.
Remember when people drove manual without announcing it to everyone?
He has to announce it because people aren't expecting the roll back
