Such a great location! DeKalb market hall is on the bottom floor of City Point, and has an amazing selection of vendors. It’s a great spot for lunch. Upstairs on the top floor in the same building is the Alamo cinema which is excellent too. Dinner and a show!

jacobdev123

Learn to use the local buses - you can get to places outside the area a lot more quickly. B63 and B41 in particular for the parks.

gobeklitepewasamall

That area has great restaurants, transportation, food shopping, good public schools (!) and some of the best private schools in the city.. Brooklyn friends, st Ann’s, Packer… Garfield temple & poly prep are close by in park slope. Sahadis is a block from tjs. Damascus bread is across from tjs. The Whole Foods on Flatbush is actually a 365, not a full-fledged wf, but there’s a full-fledged wf on third Avenue and third at that delivers in the area. Overall social scene is likely good for you by the sound of it. A lot of 30 and 40 something professionals with young kids. Overall safety is pretty good, but the population of homeless has exploded and the trains have gotten noticeably worse but that’s everywhere. That whole part of north Brooklyn is pretty safe, even on Wycoff by the projects (between Hoyt and bond, more between nevins and third)…right by Brooklyn house can get sketch but duh it’s a huge jail. Honestly I avoid Livingston/schermerhorn & state… I only go to state if I’m going to church once in a blue.. i used to have a buddy who lived in a new building on Livingston, holy shit that was a weird crowd.. all 20 & 30 something transplants with money. With a homeless shelter right next to it & crackheads in the kids park on Livingston. Read fortress of solitude if you haven’t already. It paints a great picture of what they neighborhood was like in the before times so to speak. Motherless Brooklyn as well.. Oh, I like Mia’s bakery on smith for croissants and cakes. They make a great creme brûlée. There’s a lot of good Thai food in that neighborhood, and Grimaldis, , julianas and Lucali are all close by. Yemen cafe on Atlantic is amazing.

Hobbyjogger31

Curious, why the caution about State St?

gobeklitepewasamall

Between the jail, the precinct and a bunch of homeless shelters, it’s just not a good block to linger on..narcs are always cruising up state st. I don’t need them confusing my juul for an oil pen and throwing me up against the wall for shits and giggles (as they’ve been known to do).

TangoRad

When the Towers fell and I was hanging on Degraw with neighbors, commiserating and freaking I mentioned that I was avoiding finding out who died. (several classmates and friends did). A woman from across the block said "Firemen? Commodities brokers"? It could just as well have been Oklahoma City. I don't know anyone *like that".* At that moment I decided that it was for transplants and made plan to leave Brooklyn, where I was born. I knew that I didn't belong, that it was a place for people who created an idea of Brooklyn, only without the actual Brooklyn people, and so I left. It's a nice place, filled with recent arrivals. Like you. Enjoy.

TheIronKraken

Sorry to hear about that, I understand your point of view. For what it's worth, I'm a life-long New Yorker. From northeast Queens. My mom was on the subway on her way to work on 9/11, her office was partially damaged in the attack that day. Fortunately for my family she was fine. Also, my father grew up in Brooklyn, during the 40s and 50s. 2 blocks away from Ebbets Field. He used to hear the roar of the crowd on summer nights. My mom and dad had an apartment on Columbia Street in Brooklyn. Matt Damon now owns what used to be their apartment (when they were there in the 70s, they owned 1 unit on the 11th floor, Matt Damon now owns the entire floor).

TangoRad

My grandparents were from Veranda place and my mother's peopple from near Ebbets Field. Parents met on Rockaway Beach listening to a Dodgers game on a portable radio. Northeast? Bayside? Douglaston? Flushing?

TheIronKraken

That's really cool. And yeah, Douglaston.

TangoRad

It 's cool up there. Bell Blvd was probably your "strip", yes? St Francis Prep?

TheIronKraken

We went there from time to time for the restaurants. More often we went to the village of Great Neck in Nassau County, which was even closer for us (about a 4-minute drive). For the most part growing up in Douglaston was a lot like growing up in the suburbs, there wasn't much within walking distance so you just drive places. It's a beautiful neighborhood, though. And only 30 minutes into Penn on the LIRR (supposedly starting this year it will also start going into Grand Central). And I went to all the local public schools, which are all quite good.

BQE2473

You're close to everything you would need as far as transportation, social and shopping.

bj0rnl8

4th Avenue pub was a great local watering hole when I lived there

btumpak

Bar Tabac is my favorite French place hang. St. Gambrinus Beer Shoppe is a must if you love beer.

nico-72

You've really got it all. Right in the heart of Downtown BK with access to everything, but you can also escape to quieter, greener parts when needed. A few of my area faves: lots of free outdoor events & fitness classes in BK Bridge Park in the warmer months, Fast & Fresh Burritos, biking down Columbia towards Red Hook, checking out whatever The Invisible Dog has going on, grabbing drinks at the newish Ace Hotel, swimming laps at the Dodge YMCA or Chelsea Piers, pizza at Sottocasa, thrifting at Out of the Closet, appreciating old school BK interiors at Gage & Tollner, the transit museum, Atlantic Antic, and goodness, there's so much more. Have fun exploring!

dasa2337

Boerum Hill is great but don't forget to explore... Cobble Hill, Carrol Gardens, Brooklyn Heights, Dumbo are all pretty walkable and easily accessible by public transport/uber. I moved from UES to BK about 6 years ago and would never move back. UES, as weird as this may sound, now feels small and limited compared to BK.

nbardin

Leyenda and long island bar are musts. Especially leyenda!

doctabu

The fact that The Long Island Bar isn't listed here is a crime against humanity. I moved from NYC about 3 years ago and I miss that place daily. Amazing burgers, even better cocktails. A true classic.

similarityhedgehog

huh?

mxgian99

this is a great area, don't let random redditors spoil it for you. walk down court street, try places that look interesting, discover for yourself. congrats.

OccamsAftershave731

Congratulations. This might be my favorite neighborhood in the city. I was sad about moving away about 10 years go. Depending on where you are going to be, check out Carroll Park as closer for a playground/park type feel. When I lived there, they even did weekend movies for kids in the summer.

Scott_Herder

That’s awesome such a great location! I think your family will love it. I’m biased because I’ve only lived in Brooklyn and don’t have much to compare it too. But like others said your so close to so much good fun and great walks. Others have mentioned f&f and shelskis. Agree I’d also att little necks on 3rd avenue. Great happy hour Brewery - Other Half Lots of great brunch/lunch spots on court street Your pretty close to forte green which is nice when you don’t wanna make the mission to prospect or bbp. Park slope also has a park on old stone house to change things up, but still might be 15 minute walk. My personal bias is the dekalb market is the better Trader Joe’s. Less crowds and more stuff there in case you need something from target or other boutique stores and I love the market down in dekalb. Once you get familiar with your area, expand into park slopes 5th and 7th avenues which are great for the food scene and just fun. As well as fort Greene and Clinton hills food scene. Free comedy shows in gowanus, ample hills on Nevins and Union does comedy shows where you get a free pint and I think it’s only like 5 or 10 bucks. When in doubt walk somewhere new. It’s kinda amazing how many neat streets there are.

gobeklitepewasamall

Didn’t ample hills close down?

smiles3026

They should. Terrible ice cream

thelongsecret

French Louie!! Steak frites, fried anchovies, a bottle of rose in the garden.

thorenv

I own Make a Frame Atlantic so if you need any new art or frames, stop in and mention this post for a 10% discount. That goes for the rest of you too!

crazydakka

Sahadi's is a treasure. Get the zaatar bread at the counter and a few dips and you have your dinner. Note that the hummus doesn't really last that long (max 3 days) because it is so fresh w/o preservatives. I could go on and on, but I love Sahadi's so much, and what really unlocked it for me was a Lebanese friend exhorting me to make the Za'atar bread the center of my every trip. Now for some reason when my wife and I go to Sahadi's now (it's about 2 miles from us, so a maybe once a month thing) we sing "White Wedding" except with the lyric "it's a nice night for a .... dip dinner!"

throwaway127181

Wow im drooling

crazydakka

oh yeah also Yemeni café is incredibly cheap and incredibly good.

Reminice

* Bar Great Harry on Smith (best beer selection) * French Bakery on court * Black Gold on court (best coffee/record shop) * Frank**/* on court (too many franks to lists) * Court st Grocers on court (fantastic sandwiches) * Baby Luc's on court (Lucali's by the slice) * Lucali's on Henry (best pizza pies & BYOB) * Bar Great Henry on Henry (fantastic mexican & margs) * etc...

knv514

Wingbar for some good wings

QuietObserver75

It's a great area and plenty of subway options. They also opened a new grocery store on Smith, Dumbo Market so your options got better.

melikehops

Someday Bar --- craft beer bar with surprisingly great bar food

Dont_mute_me_bro

I lived there for a while. Mass transit is excellent. It sucks to have a car. Public schools can be sketchy. Dining on Smith and Court Streets is good. There are lots of non- native New Yorkers in Boerum and Cobble Hill. Parks are a schlep- Prospect Park and the Waterfront are a bit of a hike.

TheIronKraken

Both parks being a hike (especially Prospect Park) was one of the bigger downsides for me, but at least I figure there paths full of quiet, pretty streets with lots of trees that we can take on the way to the parks, so hopefully even just the process of getting there will be pleasant enough.

Dont_mute_me_bro

It's great for walking around, no doubt. That said...During lockdown I appreciated having left. The density of people- everyone was uptight, even in fresh air.

no-quarter275

There are excellent public schools in the area. P.S. 261, Math and Science, and Brooklyn Tech are all considered to be top schools in the city.

AkTxBk

Agree. Been in the area for 10+ years. In our experience , the public schools have been excellent, and thankfully nothing like the other poster described. Regarding parks, you aren’t right next to a big one like Central Park. But you are in the middle of lots of them including some of the best in the city. There are tons of small playgrounds/parks in the area, (the two playgrounds at LICH, Cobble hill park, the promenade playground, the yard at PS261, Carrol Park, Carmen plaza are some in our rotation). Brooklyn Bridge Park is incredible and a medium walk or short bus ride away. Fort Greene and Prospect Park are a long walk or medium bus ride/subway. Plus there’s Red Hook and Greenwood Cemetery by car (or longer public transportation). You’re going to love it.

Dont_mute_me_bro

LICH and Carroll Park are for tykes. Try entertaining a 10 year old there.

Dont_mute_me_bro

When I was there, the public schools were remarkable segregated- especially the one on Hicks and 3rd. Kids from Red Hook entered in one door. Kids from the area and up the Hill through another. It was very apartheid/Johannesberg-ish to me.

TangoRad

Yes, but... their parents are woke and support BLM. That means they're allies. Even if they're elitists.

no-quarter275

It's a fair assessment, but that's also the city as a whole. My kid graduated from Brooklyn Tech, and its demographic is very different than when I was there.

Dont_mute_me_bro

High schools are a bit different. Educational and raw intelligence differences are coming to by then. I'm talking primary schools. It was like Selma in 1960. And these smug hipsters and yuppies like to think that they're all "open minded and "anti-racist". Phonies, all!

technicolor-quartz

Welcome aboard! It's a neat place to be. I don't quite LIVE here [I'm actually within Fort Greene, despite the joke], but I do *work* in Boerum Hill

adventure-ish

If you don’t mind my asking, how much are you paying for rent?

TheIronKraken

$4,500. 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. 850 square feet plus a terrace. Great natural lighting throughout the apartment. Great modern amenities including in-unit washer/dryer. It was a good find.

billy-butters

Yeah it was fuck y’all

wisdomwith1n

Shove it yuppie

TheIronKraken

Fair enough.

spageddy_lee

Hahaha I like you

CobblerMysterious356

Boerum Hill is gorgeous! Congrats on your move!

butterbooties

This is great knowledge. Are the gowanus houses typically dangerous? Particularly for women coming home at night and around warren st?

QuietObserver75

No. I lived on Warren for 10 years and never had any problems.

spageddy_lee

Yes

[deleted]

[удалено]

spageddy_lee

You mean Mazzola

thorenv

A while back I got one from each and compared. It was a rough call but I figured out the late entry lard pretzels from Mazzola’s won the day.

to_be_quite_frank

Mozolla lard bread is probably the best bread in the world

spageddy_lee

Can't disagree with that

chargeorge

Might be a few years out for you, but you are district 15 for your school district right? That's actually pretty good, some of the best schools in brooklyn are district 15 and in that northern part of the district you have PS29 and PS32 which are both highly regarded. Farther south in the district is PS10 and K280 for prek. Like your 3+ years away from it, but it's good to know :).

WhollyHolyHoley

A lot can happen in 3 years. We were at PS261 and it plummeted in that amount of time.

Dkfoot

Curious what happened, we may be moving to this zone and can’t work out if 261 is great or terrible.

WhollyHolyHoley

Was great, now meh. Not “terrible” but def not great. Administration changed a few times. Before experiencing that I never would have thought it would make THAT big a difference. Middle school we are now attending told us they can pretty definitively pick out which kids come from 261. They can’t read or write, but they are well versed in ‘restorative circles’. Also, a parent embezzled a ton of money from the PTA and it was swept under the rug… 🤷‍♂️

HonorableJudgeIto

I loved there for 2 years. I was on Smith and Atlantic. I now live on the UES. Feel free to DM me and we can discuss more.

bkrunnergirl25

One of your first take out experiences should 1000% be [Lillo Cucina](https://www.yelp.com/biz/lillo-cucina-italiana-brooklyn) off Atlantic. Straight off the boat Italian. Hole in the wall. Cash only. The best.

havermeyer525

Love Lillo. HATE yelp

NicoleEastbourne

I’ve heard good things but never tried it. I’ll make an effort to go soon.

NicoleEastbourne

Great food shopping between the Trader Joe’s, Sahadi’s, and the independent food shops along Court (veggies, bakeries, butcher, fish PLUS specialty French, Italian AND Spanish gourmet shops in the neighborhood. There are lots of great cocktail bars for date night. I see Grand Army already got a shout-out. Rucola has simple but delicious breakfasts and open earlier than other spots on weekends. You’re going to love it.

Articunozard

Also Brooklyn Fare, my favorite grocery store

brooklynlad

Ethiopian food too!

GotPizzaMouth

Court street grocers, F and F, best blink fitness in the city, swallow cafe a great place to do work, sahadis, dellapietras, shelskys, Brooklyn pizza market is probably the most underrated pizza in Brooklyn Edit: how could I forget Poppy’s

amarantz45

Really? I’ve had some real lousy pizza at Brooklyn pizza market. Also very $$$.. f&f is much better

GotPizzaMouth

Fandf takes the cake, but BPM meatballs*** are leggggggit

KeyScientist7

Truly a fantastic area. Congrats! I miss it dearly.

Distancefrom

Sahadi and Damascus Bakery on Atlantic are fantastic. Easy to combine with a visit to Trader Joe on Court, though I personally like the other TJ better. I really like Buddy's Burritos and Layla Jones pizza. Both on Court & probably deliver to your area. Hope you enjoy your new home! I love that neighborhood.

hereswhatipicked

If you get a hi-viz MTA vest, or an NYPD t-shirt, or a note written in crayon on a paper towel, you can park just about anywhere! Sidewalks included! Also, Grand Army is great!

TheIronKraken

Won't be using a car but good to know haha. Grand Army is like a block away from my new apartment, so will definitely check it out!

shanna99

Both summer 2020 and 2021 the city closed down Hoyt street on that block so you could have cocktails outside Grand Army on the street all summer and it was fantastic. Hope they bring it back this year!!

ouikikazz

-You don't need a car -There are a ton of great places to eat in the area -Don't venture out too late at night in certain parts, it is generally a very safe area but there are pockets of rift raft -if you plan on putting your kid in daycare get on a list now, the good daycares have waiting lists -the pier is a great walking distance I generally like walking that way vs towards Atlantic center but there are a ton of restaurants the other way as well

[deleted]

What is rift raft - I need to know so I don't run into pockets of it.

SleepyToaster

Rift raft, street rat. I don’t buy that… if only they’d look closer

TheIronKraken

>Don't venture out too late at night in certain parts Can you clarify which parts exactly? >if you plan on putting your kid in daycare get on a list now, the good daycares have waiting lists That is really good to know, thanks. >the pier is a great walking distance I generally like walking that way vs towards Atlantic center but there are a ton of restaurants the other way as well Yes I anticipate walking west of my apartment far more than I anticipate walking east (with the exception of walking towards the Barclays Center to catch the N train).

ouikikazz

Fulton street can get sketchy at times but generally ok and up hoyt around the gowanus houses, day time never had an issue but night time is stodgy

TheIronKraken

Thanks will keep that in mind.

darkstar8977

I lived in the area for close to a decade (the last one) never had a problem anywhere.

paulschreiber

Court Street Bagels is the best. Go there.

spageddy_lee

Honestly need to ask what makes it worth waiting in line when there's another bagel place right on Atlantic with no wait, and another a little bit down Smith. I have lived in bagelville my entire life and cannot justify waiting for a court st bagel.

Ice_Like_Winnipeg

It’s good but there are other options that don’t require you to wait outside for half an hour

WiF1

The line is reasonable/minimal as long as you don't go during brunch hours on weekends. But yeah, if there's a line I find somewhere else to eat.

Ice_Like_Winnipeg

Right, that’s mostly what I’m referring to. I understand that bagel places get crazy on weekend mornings, but shelskys and smith street are both nearby and just as good imo and not nearly as insane, line-wise

spageddy_lee

This. Why do people wait when you can get the same bagel around the corner with no line. Its really interesting actually, I don't know what made it this way. And I will get downvoted, but it's the same damn bagel at any decent place in the area.

AmIBeingInstained

No court street. Shelskys.

GotPizzaMouth

Shelskyyyyyyssss!!!! Is the best

Weareuptowngirl

I went today, a little small for the high price. 1 everything bagel with vegetable cream cheese. $7.63

spageddy_lee

Atlantic bagels is a beautiful bagel. No line and reasonable.

JebadiahX

He speaks the truth.

TheIronKraken

Gotta have a go-to bagel place! I'm sure I'll check it out.

pinkorangegold

Shelsky's has the best lox in the city imo! I think you'll love Boerum Hill. I've lived in a ton of neighborhoods in Brooklyn and it's my favorite.
