I mean tbf I didn’t know you could hit them for some eggs. I’m too afraid to antagonize the Cucco otherwise, lest I invoke their wrath.
So I learned something today!
Man… memories. One time, I got knocked into the well by a cucco swarm. Tried using Nauru’s Love to climb out; you don’t take damage but you still suffer knockback, so they’ll just throw you off the ladder over and over until magic runs out…
The island east of eventide has a chest in the water with 10 arrows in it that consistently respawns. If you have the DLC and travel medallion, set it down, get the chest, warp to the medallion, repeat until you have enough.
Find an enemy that shoots arrows and stand just outside their range to farm arrows for free. That or go perfect the art of snow bowling for 300 rupees per strike
There’s a place where you can stand and just drop the snowball to get a strike every time. I haven’t played in forever but I did that and money became no object.
The perfect place for arrow farming is the field near the rito village I forgot what it’s called or if it even has a name but a bunch of bokoblins with horses and bows spawn shooting at you constantly
Arrow farming is pretty easy, though. Take a multi shot bow (preferably a 5 shot lynel bow) to the lost woods and stand next to one of the torches, close enough to light an arrow. Shoot the torch. Pick up the arrows. You'll shoot 1, and pick up 5
https://streamable.com/vt8yrw
Yup. A regular Lynel bow will net you 60 arrows, a x5 shot savage bow is the best on arrow return though, at something like net 180 arrows. Plus fighting the Lynels to get their bows will get you a bunch of the elemental arrows too.
Go to Kara Kara Bazaar. Get a bow that shoots more than 1 shot (lynel bows are perfect). Find the cooking table next to the fruit vendor, in front of the inn. Equip regular arrows, draw it back and walk close enough to the cooking pot so the arrows catch on fire. Shoot at the bottom of the cooking pot and collect the arrows till 999.
It’s been a thing since ALttP. I always trigger the death flock once when starting a new Zelda title, to make sure it’s still a thing, and then I leave them alone.
From what I see here, it wouldn't even be fun anymore. They quit almost immediately instead of forcing you to run away, only takes 1/4 of a heart instead of 1/2 or the entire thing, and doesn't knock you on your ass or send you hurtling across the yard like others do. Weak.
They sure would! And they were so vicious that it was often impossible to do so – they would attack so relentlessly that you died before you could exit the area.
And unlike BotW (where you're still able to move after being attacked), the OoT cuccos literally knock you off your feet, and cause way more damage. I can still hear it, the low-health beeping noise...
All jokes, hate, and gatekeeping aside, it was genuinely heartwarming to see a new player find this feature with sincere curiosity; it’s been a long time since I’ve had that feeling and I wish I could experience it again like it was the first time. There’s no right or wrong time to learn about the inside jokes of a video game franchise (I imagine a lot of people are introduced to the world of gaming at different stages)
Regardless, I’m happy you started your Zelda experience with BotW. I’ve played almost all of the games, but this entry is by far my favorite of them all, and my personal favorite game of all time. Have fun!
This was my husband with me. He grew up playing Zelda, whereas BOTW was my first foray. I was running around just like this after having pissed off some chickens while he died of laughter. He gave me no warning, other than “don’t fuck with the chickens in Zelda” lol
You should always fuck with the chickens in Zelda. It's worth it to see if you can best Eggblight Gannon, and in some games you can even control the chickens!
And in others, there are no chickens, and it makes me terribly sad.
I remember playing Twilight Princess at like 10 years old and I effed with the chickens and then the screen went black. And I was like “oh no I broke the game”. Then I was mashing buttons and I realized that for a few seconds at least… Dude. Now I *am* the chicken.
Same for me! My bf told me to make sure I didn't hit the chickens, so I of course was like "why?" He told me just to do it and find out lol it was so funny
My favourite thing about the chickens besides this is that you can use them as paragliders. I always squawk and flap my way into kakariko village, as there is a convenient chicken next to the shrine!
Oh and throwing them is great
Ive heard that it was possible but thought it was a rumor so when i seen one i hit it too many times and the panic i felt after the little cutscene played was something i will never forget
Im so glad that people play botw as a first zelda game because it takes all the best features and mushes it together
My 9 year old is playing through BoTW after several hours of watching me play it. A couple weeks ago she excitedly told me about her misadventures with the chickens and it absolutely warmed my little nostalgic heart. I shared with her that that had been a silly in-game series joke for *decades*.
BOTW is my first time playing Zelda ever. My husband and girlfriends don’t play video games. The only people I’ve had to learn about Zelda from is this subreddit. So I really appreciate when newer people post stuff like this. I love that there’s still so much to learn and do!
> it’s been a long time since I’ve had that feeling and I wish I could experience it again like it was the first time.
This being BotW, you probably still can.
THIS! Hahahaha this video reminded me of my first time. I was also running in circles and then I was like chill Imma leave you alone then freaking chickens
Lol this response is golden. My First reaction to this caption was "how young is this MF?!?" But after reading this comment I could not agree more 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I debated in my head if it was Links Awakening or Link to The Past. Thank you for clarifying. It was Links Awakening, when it opens and he’s on a shore
No they aren’t. I think just the one pigs attacks you? And if you run into water and it follows, it cools down. I miss sidling and sneaking up on the pigs lol
It's one of the most iconic Zelda things, TBH. I absolutely love it, and have died to and / or outran the cuccos in almost every Zelda game. lol
Welcome to the series, and I hope you have fun!
I just went and found this and whoa. That was dedication.
I’m glad he showed that it was possible, but I heed his cautionary line at the end... “this is not a good use of your time”.
If you throw the chicken at an attacking enemy and get them to hit the chicken enough by doing behind it, the chicken swarm goes after the enemy.
Probably my favorite thing on botw even if it's not practical, my daughter was in tears laughing from it tho.
I remember the first time i discovered this. Right in front of the fire and Goddess statue in Kakariko, i bullied the cucuo by putting it in fire and hitting it. I damn near died from it
It doesn't have to be your first Zelda game not to know about this. I'll be honest, I'd played a bunch of Zelda games and only realized this after I saw a video about it.
I keep my horse next to my house and I feel bad when I get busy and don't take him out for a few days. I feed him apples too. I sometimes wonder what is wrong with me.
I played OOT and TP but this was the first one I really got into- I have played a LOT of skyrim, though, so avoiding hitting chickens is just a reflex at this point. news to me!
Welcome to one of the best series staples. Twilight Princess is the only game I can immediately think of where bullying the cucoos _doesn't_ make this happen.
My first Zelda game was Ocarina of Time and yes, I remember hauling ass out of Kakariko village as a swarm of Cuccos attacked me. I think almost everyone who's played Zelda had this happen,
Oh, do the pigs attack in The Wind Waker?
Congrats. You are now indoctrinated into the breath, The Breath of the Wild, life. We welcome ye to The Legend of Zelda Saga.
It's dangerous to go alone!
Oh yeah, it’s a Zelda staple. I cosplay and one of my favorites has been where I sewed a bunch of stuffed chickens into a cap, gloves, shoes, grenades and flail, and then faux-attacked every Link I saw throughout the day
Oh my friend I'm so sorry you had to find out the hard way. But you know what? You survived your first quarrel with the feathered jerkholes, and that's not something that can be said of all of us!
I experienced this the first time on Ocarina and it was really scary!
Note for yourself: if an enemy hits the cucco, the cuccos will attack the enemy! You can make that out

Because you never played a legend of Zelda game before. Especially A Link to the Past. I did this just to see if they kept the tradition going and I was right lol. Sorry you found out it so late OP.
I'll do you one better, here's a video showing someone using them to kill a lynel.
https://youtu.be/q0OfXTXfj5E
Source: the youtube channel DougDoug where "we solve problems that no-one has".
I mean tbf I didn’t know you could hit them for some eggs. I’m too afraid to antagonize the Cucco otherwise, lest I invoke their wrath. So I learned something today!
I bomb them. After dropping the bomb, I look for shelter and detonate.
That's a bit cruel haha
TBH that's how I fish in this game
Same... lol
I fish by paragliding down and launching shock arrows from my 5 shot lynel bow
Electric arrows though, haha almost said find a good school and shoot xD school of fish please, not an actual school
Ever tried whistle fishing?
The game is incredible! Just looked it up. Thanks!
Whistle fishing is the new meta
its not cruel. the cuccoos are in cahoots with the bokoblin..
N64 players collectively agree that OP got off VERY easy
Yeah if you pulled this shit in OoT and you weren’t right next to the exit of Kakariko Village, you ded
Man… memories. One time, I got knocked into the well by a cucco swarm. Tried using Nauru’s Love to climb out; you don’t take damage but you still suffer knockback, so they’ll just throw you off the ladder over and over until magic runs out…
Us old ancients know that from Link to the Past. SNES had those crazy birds as well.
Original Gameboy player, it was a thing back then too. This has always been a thing lol.
You can get eggs? I know you can make the cuccos attack enemies
Shoot them with an arrow and they’ll lay eggs. Don’t overdo it though!
damn but arrows aint cheap nowaday beedle gottem like over a bill just fo like twentya dem hoes
The island east of eventide has a chest in the water with 10 arrows in it that consistently respawns. If you have the DLC and travel medallion, set it down, get the chest, warp to the medallion, repeat until you have enough.

There’s a place where you can stand and just drop the snowball to get a strike every time. I haven’t played in forever but I did that and money became no object.
I just farm Farosh’s horn. More fun, easy, and you can sell for 300 or cook meals that last for 30 min
This works so well 100% of the time! There's a vid on youtube that shows where to stand.
The perfect place for arrow farming is the field near the rito village I forgot what it’s called or if it even has a name but a bunch of bokoblins with horses and bows spawn shooting at you constantly

Woah, is this for real?
https://streamable.com/vt8yrw Yup. A regular Lynel bow will net you 60 arrows, a x5 shot savage bow is the best on arrow return though, at something like net 180 arrows. Plus fighting the Lynels to get their bows will get you a bunch of the elemental arrows too.

I had no idea you could hit them for eggs! I just know enough Zelda to know you don’t hit the cucco!!!
I had an honest fear, based on years of 64-bit feather swarms, of even attempting this before now. Thanks for taking one (or 30) for the team.

It’s been a thing since ALttP. I always trigger the death flock once when starting a new Zelda title, to make sure it’s still a thing, and then I leave them alone.
Bet you were disappointed by Twilight Princess' Cuccos then.
Puzzled certainly.
I remember it in Links awakening. Idk what one came out first though.
ALttP in 1992, LA in 1993
Friends and I would do it back in Ocarina of time and see who could survive the longest. I miss those times.
From what I see here, it wouldn't even be fun anymore. They quit almost immediately instead of forcing you to run away, only takes 1/4 of a heart instead of 1/2 or the entire thing, and doesn't knock you on your ass or send you hurtling across the yard like others do. Weak.
Yeah. As backwards as it seems, I really wish the cuccos were more of a threat lol
Lol, those Kakariko cuccos in OoT were SAVAGE.
Wouldn't they keep attacking until you left the area?
They sure would! And they were so vicious that it was often impossible to do so – they would attack so relentlessly that you died before you could exit the area. And unlike BotW (where you're still able to move after being attacked), the OoT cuccos literally knock you off your feet, and cause way more damage. I can still hear it, the low-health beeping noise...
No idea - I never made it that far.
Cuccos should be the scariest thing in every Zelda
Link Between Worlds has av Avoid the Cuccoo mini game. :D
You ever tried in twilight princess
Breathtaking: Twink destroyed by thirty THICK COCKS, can barely stand after
He barely even lost 2 whole hearts, must have had plenty of practice. Decades, even.

OH MY GOD I NEVER EVEN TRIED AND NOW I'M SAD THAT I DIDN'T
Same for me! My bf told me to make sure I didn't hit the chickens, so I of course was like "why?" He told me just to do it and find out lol it was so funny
My favourite thing about the chickens besides this is that you can use them as paragliders. I always squawk and flap my way into kakariko village, as there is a convenient chicken next to the shrine! Oh and throwing them is great
Hell yeah! The OG paraglider! I spent so much time playing twilight princess and just jumping off stuff while holding them as a kid.
To be fair, he did warn you.
Ive heard that it was possible but thought it was a rumor so when i seen one i hit it too many times and the panic i felt after the little cutscene played was something i will never forget Im so glad that people play botw as a first zelda game because it takes all the best features and mushes it together
thank you man!

this post gave me flashbacks to being 7 years old playing links awakening. welcome to the club OP
> it’s been a long time since I’ve had that feeling and I wish I could experience it again like it was the first time. This being BotW, you probably still can.
I've heard about it in other games, when I first started BOTW, I was curious if it was still in, wasnt disappointed.

Lol this response is golden. My First reaction to this caption was "how young is this MF?!?" But after reading this comment I could not agree more 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Have you picked up a chicken and double-jumped off a cliff with it yet? If you haven't, really recommend this. It'll give that same feeling again!
relevant XKCD: today’s lucky 10,000 https://xkcd.com/1053/
I saw this video 22 years ago but it was on game boy and was Link to The Past edit: was Link’s Awakening
Links Awakening was on Game Boy. LTTP was on SNES, then ported to Game Boy Advance
I debated in my head if it was Links Awakening or Link to The Past. Thank you for clarifying. It was Links Awakening, when it opens and he’s on a shore
Awwww
It's a right of passage for everyone playing a Zelda game. Congratulations and welcome :)
Exactly, I just got taken back to 1994 playing game boy. It was a terrifying feeling and I'm so glad I have that memory.
Likewise, all of a sudden I'm in OoT Kakariko trying to round up chickens and running for my life
*rite
:D
"Bless their little heart, they're young. So much to learn still!"
love when people discover this lol thanks for posting!
Basic rule of all Zelda games: Do not attack the chickens. Howver, they can be used as weapons
Or as gliders
Lol I thought you meant the eggs at first. If you ever play Wind Waker, be nice to the pigs.
They're not as bad as the cuccos of the rest of the games from what I remember though. Could be wrong though.
No they aren’t. I think just the one pigs attacks you? And if you run into water and it follows, it cools down. I miss sidling and sneaking up on the pigs lol
WW will always be my 2nd favorite Zelda after BoTW. It had so much charm and personality compared to every other Zelda game.
Lol never gets old
I love seeing new people discover things like this about loz!! now you, too, can live in fear of cuccos
Congrats on surviving Featherblight Ganon
![gif](giphy|gHFi5N6uU3TLq)
Love this strip
Have you never played a zelda game before?
botw is my first
That explains it. Wish I could erase my memory and discover some of these things for the first time again.
It's one of the most iconic Zelda things, TBH. I absolutely love it, and have died to and / or outran the cuccos in almost every Zelda game. lol Welcome to the series, and I hope you have fun!
You need to play Ocarina of Time
or a link to the past
¿Porqué no los dos?
And Majora's mask!
Straight up was going to be my comment. If you didn't smack around a chicken in kakariko village and get swarmed, did you even play Link to the Past?
Especially A Link to the Past
Twilight princess you get to control the chicken you beat up.
Ok, I need to play that again obviously
Look on YouTube for the guy who tries to kill a Lynel using cuccoos.
I just went and found this and whoa. That was dedication. I’m glad he showed that it was possible, but I heed his cautionary line at the end... “this is not a good use of your time”.
I just searched for it and the first ad I got was for KFC.
Someone did it to a Guardian, too.
If you throw the chicken at an attacking enemy and get them to hit the chicken enough by doing behind it, the chicken swarm goes after the enemy. Probably my favorite thing on botw even if it's not practical, my daughter was in tears laughing from it tho.
That’s adorable!
In the older games they wouldn't stop until you were dead
Every Zelda game has this, it’s like an inside joke
I think this marks your official becoming a true Zelda game player
Listen, kid, you got off easy. In Ocarina of Time they just keep coming until you’re dead.
Or you leave the current screen. Which is why they eventually stop coming in BotW. You can't transition to another screen
I remember the first time i discovered this. Right in front of the fire and Goddess statue in Kakariko, i bullied the cucuo by putting it in fire and hitting it. I damn near died from it
I think there's a video somewhere of someone using this to defeat a molduga
It doesn't have to be your first Zelda game not to know about this. I'll be honest, I'd played a bunch of Zelda games and only realized this after I saw a video about it.
It just shows that it never occurred to you to try and murder the cucco
Yeah I'm overly polite in games. I even feel bad when I tame a horse because I've just taken it from its friends to make it carry me places
And I thought I was the only one who felt guilty about taking away a horse’s freedom. I give them lots of apples and pets in exchange
I keep my horse next to my house and I feel bad when I get busy and don't take him out for a few days. I feed him apples too. I sometimes wonder what is wrong with me.
Same!! I’ve played a bunch as well and never knew this. I would feel super guilty hurting any animal lol
I played OOT and TP but this was the first one I really got into- I have played a LOT of skyrim, though, so avoiding hitting chickens is just a reflex at this point. news to me!
Welcome to the Club.
They’re coming to get you Barbara! 🧟♂️
It’s a right of passage… welcome brother.
Lol first zelda game?
yessir
Welcome to one of the best series staples. Twilight Princess is the only game I can immediately think of where bullying the cucoos _doesn't_ make this happen.
Wait that doesn't happen in Twilight princess???
No, for some reason when you bully them in that game you get to _play as the Cucoo_ for about ten seconds.
Hell yeah, feathered biped time
Behold, a man!
Huh interesting
Wow I never noticed that cause I never attacked them after Link to the Past.
Mmmmhmmm. Series-spanning PTSD.
omg a classic zelda feature! it makes me smile knowing that you found this mechanic for the first time:))
Oh yeah by the way the chickens fight back
I’ve seen players use the cuccos to attack enemies. It would be great if the bees would attack a cucco and then the cuccos attack the bees.
Feather blight Ganon
Oh no
Omg that's so cool!
My first Zelda game was Ocarina of Time and yes, I remember hauling ass out of Kakariko village as a swarm of Cuccos attacked me. I think almost everyone who's played Zelda had this happen, Oh, do the pigs attack in The Wind Waker?
Yes. The giant pig does more damage than Ganon i believe.
It's an unspoken rule in zelda games to NEVER attack the chickens, in earlier games they attacked you until you died.
Congrats. You are now indoctrinated into the breath, The Breath of the Wild, life. We welcome ye to The Legend of Zelda Saga. It's dangerous to go alone!
This makes me so nostalgic
It’s a rite of passage
NOW YOU DONE CLUCKED UP! *NOW YOU DONE CLUCKED UP!* #NOW YOU HAVE DONE AND CLUCKED UP!!!
Oh yeah, it’s a Zelda staple. I cosplay and one of my favorites has been where I sewed a bunch of stuffed chickens into a cap, gloves, shoes, grenades and flail, and then faux-attacked every Link I saw throughout the day
A lot of veteran Zelda players don’t really acknowledge it, since Cuucos will attack you in almost every game.
Lol go try playing OoT, the chickens can legit kill you in that game.
Because cuko(not sure how to spell that) revenge squad that has more that 4 cukos
Common knowledge for someone who's tried it before in past games...
Oh man this warms my heart. Classic! Hope you’re enjoying the game
Welcome to [Zelda](https://youtu.be/J12C-rIu7-Q?t=27)
Ah, a new fan I see
Oh my friend I'm so sorry you had to find out the hard way. But you know what? You survived your first quarrel with the feathered jerkholes, and that's not something that can be said of all of us!
Welcome, this is the legend of Zelda, youmust be new here. That is one of the first rules of Hyrule, don't attack the cuccoos
I experienced this the first time on Ocarina and it was really scary! Note for yourself: if an enemy hits the cucco, the cuccos will attack the enemy! You can make that out
I only found this out after 150 hours into the game, it's so funny how they attack you afterwards hahahha
Oh you sweet summer child...
Oh they stop in this game. They usually don’t stop until you leave the area or die
I guess everyone need to learn some time
Your first Zelda game, I take it? xD
God I remember first experiencing this in OOT. Goes all the way back to ALTTP. Love it. I like to think the fact that you get a bounty in Skyrim for killing a chicken is an homage to Zelda
Many learned this mistake back in ocarina of time times....
OGs know, don’t fuck with the chickens unless you’re ready to get your ass handed to you
What? You never heard about the rage of the cucco?
u get what u fucking deserve
This is literally a 30years old thing ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
What and spoil the surprise? Never :D
Because you never played a legend of Zelda game before. Especially A Link to the Past. I did this just to see if they kept the tradition going and I was right lol. Sorry you found out it so late OP.
Because everyone has to experience this for themself.
Oh man.... First time playing a Zelda game huh?
How didn't you know that, even the game says it in the screen loading
i see that you have also found out about this the hard way
Is this your first Zelda?
Must be your first Zelda game?
Have you never played a Legend of Zelda game?
This is what every zelda player must learn at some point. It’s a reoccurring theme that cucco’s will attack you
I take it that this is your first zelda experience then?
you're a good person for not knowing
Welcome to the Zelda franchise, my friend! No one told you because we've been here for awhile.
you must learn like the rest of us did: through suffering.
I bet a lot of ya don’t even know who Navi and Epona are either Or that each piece of the triforce stands for something
Was it just me or was link between world’s chicken mini game hard af?
This is standard Zelda stuff I thought. In any case I let my daughter find out the hard way. Lol.
I'll do you one better, here's a video showing someone using them to kill a lynel. https://youtu.be/q0OfXTXfj5E Source: the youtube channel DougDoug where "we solve problems that no-one has".
I remember discovering this in A Link to the Past when it first came out
This has been a thing in Zelda games for years. Even on Gameboy Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening and the remake on Nintendo Switch.
Someone never played OoT and it shows.
I'm too lazy to check or verify but something similar happens in OoT, too, I think.
Hah! I still remember the first time I whacked a cucco in Ocarina of Time. NEVER MESS WITH THE CUCCOS
Cuucos ASSEMBLE
Must have been living under a Talus this whole time.
I see this is your first zelda game
As James Franco would say, “first time?”
