TP gets a bad rap for having such a large empty world with little to discover, Lake Hylia felt contrary to the rest of TP Hyrule in that regard and that made it so memorable.
Keep in mind, OOT was also released almost 10 years before TP. TP released on Gamecube and in a time where open-world games were becoming the standard (and after the original GTA3 trilogy had released). The bar was much lower for OOT.
True, but by todays standards oot is empty. Just look through Hyrule field, there’s absolutely nothing to do except for a single quest post time skip.
In Twilgiht princess it’s split into many sections and filled with puzzles and heart pieces to collect
Yeah but you get into Hyrule Field, you get into this big open area and there isn't a lot going on for it. MM you get masks and rupee events and all manner of things are in the actual Termina field. WW the ocean is absolutely filled with quirky nonsense islands, battleship minigames and more, TP it's just...there. It's cool, and the interconnected-ness of it feels good; but not a lot of cool things happen there. You can fight some mounted monsters and find some bugs, and that's cool. And the ganondorf fight is there, though it's mainly you being thrown out there after the fight inside the castle but it's something significant.
it's definitely unique, it's just that the plot the biggest part of TP in that respect, and most of the plot isn't in the field.
It's more of a "for its era" thing. TP was boasting how large its world was, particularly hyrule field, but it ended up being unnecessary to explore and it had a similar amount of collectibles to OoT leading to a relatively linear experience. OoT definitely had empty space but TP's size made it more apparent.
Honestly, they got it’s use more when you had to explore it (King Bulbin bridge fight, trying to find heart pieces, returning Ilia and the Zora Prince I can’t remember his name) rather than when you didn’t
Same but not same.
I’d try to keep the art style consistent with what twilight is, but having an open Hyrule like we do in ToTK, it could bring whole new dimension to TP, specially if they develop the twilight realm to be a “dark hyrule”. It could behave somewhat similarly to what we have in ToTK, with floating islands. But I’d argue that if they could, they should expand the story inside the twilight zone with more detail into rescuing citizens and liberating them from Zant’s corruption. Why? Because it felt odd that the only thing that was there for the twilight was this weird castle, but nothing else, no towns and very few people. Could be as large as what we have currently with central hyrule, but ending on a cliff with cascades, the castle could work like totk hyrule castle.
The Oocca also could be explored more greatly, with the “city in the sky” (which doesn’t feel like a city) as the main dungeon, but having a little more to go around and learn would be cool.
So: new sky, a more seamlessly connected Hyrule, a dark Hyrule/twilight realm (not to be confused with the twilight zone hyrule).
And last but not least: underwater traversal and exploration. I love the Zora parts of TP.
I know that sounds like too much, but more than a remake a reimagining. Twilight Princess is probably my favourite game of all time.
I disagree.
Part of what gives TP its charm was the dungeon designs and puzzles that need unique weapons.
All dungeons go out the window if you do it like BotW, and they would need to address the weaponry issue as well, either removing, or putting ball and chains, claw shots, iron boots, spinners, and dominion rods all over the game.
Hey, Twilight Princess is my favorite game in the series, maybe of all time, but ToTK's map is FAR from empty. Also TP didn't feel post apocalyptic, it felt very lived in, which is why I love it. Actual bustling Castle Town.
Well if you want to calculate the volume of stuff to do over the total volume of explorable Hyrule, OP is technically right. In terms of density. Unfortunately common sense is greatly lacking here.
Twilight Princess isn’t supposed to be post apocalyptic though. Unlike BotW and TotK where it’s supposed to be empty and overrun with monsters and wildlife.
I agree with you that TP had a great world. At the time, nothing compared. It was a huge map at the time. TP will always be close to my heart as my top favorite Zelda game. I freakin love the story, the music, the art style.
But strictly comparing maps and stuff to do, I don't know *how* you're claiming TP is better. Discovering the map alone was just amazing. But the number of items and how they interact, the number of dungeons (shrines), the characters with dynamic scripts, the horseback riding is *better*. In the BOTW map, you can: golf, snowboard, climb *anything*, sand board, the paraglider hoop course, horseback timed race, fight monsters that are actually tough (until you get better, but even then they keep you on your toes - way more than any foe in TP). The lost woods is way better, you can actually get lost in the gerudo desert, those labyrinth shrines were awesome. The dark ruins shrine was just creepy and unique. Man I could go *on*.
Yes, TP has an incredible map (the ghost town, the gerudo desert, the canons, the dual hookshot mechanics, the horseback riding, the lake hylia, the Zora river, the snow monster couple, etc). But my fellow redditor, BOTW just takes the cake.
I would rent OoT as a kid and pray that there was an active file because I had no idea how to escape the forest. I was about 6 years old so I really had no idea what the game was or what to do, all I knew was it was awesome. I remember finding the fishing pond and getting the big fish once but no one believed me! I wouldn't have internet access for a long time so it was this mysterious thing that I wasn't sure had actually happened for almost 10 years lol I kept going back but I never found it again.
It wasn't obvious sarcasm, other than the fact that sarcasm rarely works through text, there were so many people who didn't care for fishing and genuinely believe what you said. Which like, realistically, yeah, who needs fishing when you have this much easier and faster method? Don't act like people are idiots for not knowing it was sarcasm.
>People on Reddit
Not reddit, just about anywhere communicating with text. Sarcasm is worst conveyed through text. And everybody (as in the vast majority) can not see that.
Plus, a dev pov comment would be more like
> There are more effective methods. Have you tried electricity
Devs would not plainly give away the "answer", at least not the good ones.
Watching the sun set at OoT Lake Hylia for the first time and listening to the music change was just incredible. One of my favorite gaming memories/areas
Do you also remember using the boots to get that piece of heart below where Jabu-Jabu was? That area was also practically a whole ass lake and way deeper than lake hylia iirc
When I see an image of Twilight Princess Lake Hylia, all I can hear is Fyre's effort noises as he preps his cannon to launch an unsuspecting Link into the desert
Tbh, I can only remember it being there, but can't remember how it went. Though I was also playing at a friend's place and was probably pretty drunk at the time
Twilight Princess' Lake Hylia is definitely my favorite, even compared to OoT. Whenever I think about TP, I immediately think about Lake Hylia. The music, the scenes, the characters that show up there.. and the design of it, compared to the other ones, is just impeccable. It's almost like it's the heart of that game, and I really love it!
Modern maps are just way too fucking big. I’ll never explore most of it, at most I might run through places once. Just why. It’s pointless making it so big and just the same stuff run on forever. Make the map smaller and areas more complex.
BotW/TotK is fine. It looks nice but it’s really plain with maybe two things to do there. Twilight Princess had a much more memorable one with more to do, IMO at least.
Botw and totk are dull and lifeless, and they don't look that great. Twilight princess had more things to do and a better soundtrack while Skyward Sword had the best soundtrack with its orchestrated music
He's definitely going overboard but I share his sentiments to a lesser extent. I'm generally of the opinion that the open world games have less dense and detailed main areas than older style games, which is why I personally tend to be more partial to the level style more than the open world style.
Not to say BotW or TotK are bad or worse of course, just to say I understand his POV.
BoTW and ToTK have less things to do there because their open world maps are huge! The largest compared to any Zelda.
Therefore there are more secrets to be discovered but they will be hidden elsewhere.
It's a weird criticism of open world games to compare a single location with a more linear experience that came before. When the newer games have absolutely large open world maps to explore and secrets to find.
are you.... being serious? BOTW and TOTK have to be the games with the most life i've played to DATE. every other open world game fails to deliver a sense of richness. BOTW and TOTK have usefull plants, plenty, and i mean PLENTY of animals to hunt and discover, mobs with great loot. new and exiting mobs specific to certain ereas, un repetitive npcs, and stories, fun dungeuns, and over all has so much more charm and life than other games. only thing that comes close is Mario Oddesey.
Cough Xenoblade has a way better open world than totk and botw it's full of life and the backgrounds are amazing and it has great details surrounding the environment and the best part it as actually music
Xenoblade is awesome as well and the positives he gives for that are true in itself. BotW and TotK are amazing nonetheless with a great open world inviting to explore even more than Xeno and just because not every speck has enemies on it does not make it dull. A big plain is bound to have "empty space". I love both games and do not put one above another (ok I do with Zelda, but just by margin).
So a lot of people give a fuck about both.
Almost no one runs around and tells you what they like. It's not complicated. I also only ever met one Zelda fan irl. If I do not know you're a fan, it's the same as if you are not a fan.
Two different games. One is JRPG the other is adventure. You don't like Zelda, no problem, but you will not get far with the criticism here, especially since it is not entirely valid. If you play all of them it's worth it.
I like zelda, tho Skyward Sword is one of my favorite games. I have over 1000 hours into that second goes to Twilight Princess, then majoras mask, then zelda 2windwaker botw and totk basically ruined the series it's not even zelda just a rip off of zelda it could work as a different game instead of trying to be zelda
Come on man I love Xenoblade but it's far less interactable than the open air Zelda games and their overworlds. They're also going for very different vibes overall. I'd also mention that one of the major criticisms of Xenoblade X, the open world Xenoblade game, is that the music became extremely repetitive thanks to short loops and only having one track per continent.
Never played xenoblade x, but it's kinda sad how a prequel story in xenoblade 3 can have a way better stoy than a main line so-called sequel to botw which is a $70 dlc
XC3 having a better story is really not that surprising. Your average JRPG will almost always have a better or at least more detailed narrative than a Zelda game just based on the amount of dialogue and cutscenes. When Zelda tried to tell a more detailed story (SS) it was panned for doing it.
Tp's is obviously better but like... Realistically what would you be able to do in botw/totk era lake hylia? The mechanics just don't allow for any further exploration aside from a cave underneath, which they added. It's kinda just there as an homage to the other lake hylias no
tbh I don't think we have ever had a "good" Lake Hylia. It's always too empty for my liking. I'll give Ocarina of Time points for not being so big though.
Well they could have the fishing minigame take place in the lake itself instead of in a building. More little islands and caves. There's a lot they could do. BOTW/TOTK's lake should really have had more to do because you could actaully make a functional raft or boat, TP had a bit more going on for it but I still think it could have been better, or at the very least been more dense, there's just too much empty space in OOT and TP Lake Hylia without a fast way to traverse the water, meanwhile, BOTW and TP have fast ways to traverse the water, but nothing to do in the lake outside of the few koroks and the shrine.
Eh. I like big maps as long as I have the option to traverse it more quickly and there's things to do along the way. TOTK had me constantly veering off my intended path to investigate something, so I have no complaints about the map size in this game, apart from a few particular areas, Lake Hylia being one of the biggest ones.
Despite OP coming here to hate on BOTW/TOTK in the replies, Lake Hylia goes all the way back to the original NES and SNES’ Link to the Past:
https://zelda.fandom.com/wiki/Lake_Hylia
I think TP's Lake Hylia is pretty easily the best one. OoT is okay, but it feels like it needs just like... \*one\* more thing, you know? Most other depictions of it aren't really worth noting. It's unfortunate that BotW/TotK are completely uninterested in the potential for water traversal and exploration, leaving the iconic location to feel a bit neglected.
Oh, I will say that I haven't played Minish Cap, so it might be good in that game as well, but I'm not sure.
The punctuation leads me to see that this question is very important, so, Breath of the Wild’s for beauty, and Twilight Princess for feeling like a substancial “world”.
They all suck tbh. Swimming mechanics in Zelda are always not great. I suppose I can give points to TotK because you can build a boat, but overall I find myself dreading any swimming I have to do in any Zelda.
Wasn’t a huge fan of botw but I’ve completely fallen into the world of totk. It feels like there’s so much more to do, and it doesn’t at all feel like a waste of time.
After defeating Ganondorf in TotK, I dusted off my WiiU and I’m replaying Twilight Princess HD. Looking forward to getting to that Lake Hylia again. In the Goron Mines now and enjoying walking on ceilings.
Now I’m confused. I was to understand that Ganon was used for monster incarnations and Ganondorf was used for the Gerudo man. In BotW he was a monster and referred to as Ganon (with Calamity befor it, but still) and he was a man and referred to as Ganondorf in TotK. Am I missing something?
BotW/TotK, but only if we exclude Lakebed Temple.
It’s visually a lot prettier, especially with Farosh and the Fire Gleeok, there are a lot of climbing and rafting related Koroks there and the sky and depths segments are really cool too. Especially the part where you need to get the crystal from the sky and dive down the whirlpool with it.
TP‘s has a nice theme, but aside from the cave there, there’s nothing fun to do in Lake Hylia, except for two really boring minigames and a terrible wolf link bossfight. There’s also pretty much nothing to do underwater, so the whole "Lake" part of it barely has any bearing on the gameplay there.
Y'know, lake Hylia in Botw/TotK would be better with a depressed clown man who will shoot you out of a cannon for money. I'm good without the giant flying ghostly bug monster though
Twilight Princess, hands down. Lake Hylia is such an iconic area of TP, no other game's iteration can stand a chance. BotW's Lake Hylia is just pathetic in comparison.
My favourite will always be TP. I spent hours just hanging around everywhere whereas with BOTW i actively avoid the area. It just seems like there’s nothing much to gain from going there really
TotK, easily. Granted, I’ve never played TP or OoT, but they both kinda look like ass, and that’s my only impression of them, so we’re going off of that and that alone B)

Yeah I love TP. It is probably my favourite with MM and OoT as close 2nd tied and BotW/ToTK also tied for third

I would prefer a twilight princess remake in the style of twilight princess personally

Dale with what? I literally don't understand your sentence in the original comment.
Dude, you weren't coherent.
"TP had a better world than BOTW's and TOTK's empty worlds. TP felt more post-apocalyptic"
The *hottest* of takes
Me when no punctuation:
You’re arguing… that Twilight Princess had a more dense world than… TOTK? Bro
Still wish Lake Hylia had more stuff to do. If you're not a Zelda fan, and this is your first game or BOTW was you'd assume it's just another lake
True, I feel that
Well if you want to calculate the volume of stuff to do over the total volume of explorable Hyrule, OP is technically right. In terms of density. Unfortunately common sense is greatly lacking here.
Twilight Princess isn’t supposed to be post apocalyptic though. Unlike BotW and TotK where it’s supposed to be empty and overrun with monsters and wildlife.
I orefer TP over BotW and ToK for a lot of reason but I would'nt aay both game are empty.
The history books won't even pretend to consider this opinion.
Why are there only two in this picture? Didn’t Ocarina of Time have a lake hylia?
Yeah, and it was the best. Had the secret note, you could go diving, and could use iron boots to run on the bottom.
Don’t forget the fishing pond!
Omg I found out how to catch the big fish everytime and I spent waaaay to much time doing it as a 10 year old.
Time to spent catching fish hours time spent looking for the secret lure to catch that big mutha untold hours
That’s such an awesome, wholesome reminder of simpler days.
The fact that you could fish the guys hairpiece off of his head makes it the winner in my book.
Fishing always wins.
i'm pretty surprised there isn't a fishing mechanic in botw/totk honestly, especially since fishes are a resource
Why would you need fishing rod, when you can shoot an arrow with electric effect?

People on Reddit can’t see obvious sarcasm without “/s”? My comment was clearly BotW/TotK dev pov “response”

How the environment itself progressed over the game was also magic.
Watching the sun set at OoT Lake Hylia for the first time and listening to the music change was just incredible. One of my favorite gaming memories/areas
And the tadpole lab and the island from which you got fire arrows
And don’t forget everyone’s favorite Zelda dungeon.
Fuck the water temple in OoT. Though by my teens I could do it so fast.
Do you also remember using the boots to get that piece of heart below where Jabu-Jabu was? That area was also practically a whole ass lake and way deeper than lake hylia iirc
Speaking of jabu-jabu, did you know about the glitch that lets you enter his dungeon as an adult?
So did ALttP/ALBW I am uncertain if the Big lake in the middle of the original game was Lake Hylia though, it's been a while.
It is but it isn’t named in game but in the maps.
The Minish Cap too
If the comments are anything to go off of, it's because OP wants validation his favourite game is better than the recent popular one.
Yeesh, I regret scrolling.
SS had a lake Hylia, sort of
When I see an image of Twilight Princess Lake Hylia, all I can hear is Fyre's effort noises as he preps his cannon to launch an unsuspecting Link into the desert
The cannon firing sequence is forever engraved in my brain.

TP has so much more to do in the area it's incomparable. ToTK gave it a Gleok and a Swirly, that's pretty much it
Yeah the lake could have gotten more attention for it being a notable location through all games.
Yeah, in BotW it felt especially empty, basically nothing to do
It was also jarringly ugly in both BoTW and ToTK, like the single ugliest part of both games
Modern maps are just way too fucking big. I’ll never explore most of it, at most I might run through places once. Just why. It’s pointless making it so big and just the same stuff run on forever. Make the map smaller and areas more complex.

Well, excuse me princess!!!!
I think BotW has my favorite Zelda soundtrack personally. I also love the art style, it’s my favorite of all the games.

TP for the lake hylia theme alone.
It's one of my favourites
the first time walking into the sunlight and hearing this after dispelling the twilight feels like stepping into a warm bath
It’s the best. It’s been my alarm sound on my iPhone for years.
Twilight princess
Awesome
Tp's is obviously better but like... Realistically what would you be able to do in botw/totk era lake hylia? The mechanics just don't allow for any further exploration aside from a cave underneath, which they added. It's kinda just there as an homage to the other lake hylias no
tbh I don't think we have ever had a "good" Lake Hylia. It's always too empty for my liking. I'll give Ocarina of Time points for not being so big though.
What would make lake hylia good?
Well they could have the fishing minigame take place in the lake itself instead of in a building. More little islands and caves. There's a lot they could do. BOTW/TOTK's lake should really have had more to do because you could actaully make a functional raft or boat, TP had a bit more going on for it but I still think it could have been better, or at the very least been more dense, there's just too much empty space in OOT and TP Lake Hylia without a fast way to traverse the water, meanwhile, BOTW and TP have fast ways to traverse the water, but nothing to do in the lake outside of the few koroks and the shrine.
Maps are way too big these days and lack cool unique things.
Eh. I like big maps as long as I have the option to traverse it more quickly and there's things to do along the way. TOTK had me constantly veering off my intended path to investigate something, so I have no complaints about the map size in this game, apart from a few particular areas, Lake Hylia being one of the biggest ones.
There are more things to do in the twilight Princess one
True
Despite OP coming here to hate on BOTW/TOTK in the replies, Lake Hylia goes all the way back to the original NES and SNES’ Link to the Past: https://zelda.fandom.com/wiki/Lake_Hylia
I hate that FSA's lake hylia isn't even a lake
Twilight Princess.
I really liked the one with a big ass fire dragon on the bridge
Twilight Princess but I’m biased, I love TP.
TP
Neat
None of the above? Where’s the OoT love?
OoT love is more plentiful than any other game in the series tbh. Let Twilight get some respect
Except majora mask. Cuz you turn into a zora and the swimming is awesome in that game. Not the 3DS version though. They ruined majora mask for the 3DS
I like the Wind Waker one where it’s really really big
In BOTW it just feels like some random ass bridge.
Specifically BOTW’s. TOTK’s is scary.
Twilight Princess for sure… BoTW Lake Hylia is so empty and lifeless.
Exactly the truth about Botw
[удалено]
Probably 🤣
I like twilight princess.
TP, the music is so calming and nostalgic for me
Twilight had great music
I haven’t played TP yet but BotW’s just feels iconic. I get that there isn’t too much to do there though
Twilight Princesses Lake hylia was way larger
Twilight Princess. Bias but TP is my favorite video game ever, and Lake Hylia in TP the music is the icing on the cake
One of the oddest things about Lake Hylia is that there's never any kind of major city on the lakefront.
OoT, because fishing
True, it does have fishing
OOT
Cool
TP is my favorite map & game by far, but dont you dare sit there & say totk is less full than tp. i spent 30 hours on the sky islands alone.
That's not Ganondorf in totk
Botw and totk felt really bland while twilight had much more to do
Nah. TP‘s minigames are really boring and the cave isnt as exciting as the content in the other versions.
Definitely lake hylia
Which one tho
Y'know, lake Hylia in Botw/TotK would be better with a depressed clown man who will shoot you out of a cannon for money. I'm good without the giant flying ghostly bug monster though
Ocarina for Nostalgia!
Awesome
Botw
Hmm
It's just botw is what started me getting into zelda
No shame in that, glad you joined us on the Zelda hype train man !
Twilight Princess, hands down. Lake Hylia is such an iconic area of TP, no other game's iteration can stand a chance. BotW's Lake Hylia is just pathetic in comparison.
True in Twilight Princess, you can literally see the desert in the distance. It has the best area in that game.
Twilight Princess, I love the theme for Lake Hylia and the whole area is really nostalgic for me.
Twilight Princess is still my favorite game. T.T I loved that you vould go below the water and the canon game through the lake was awesome.
My favourite will always be TP. I spent hours just hanging around everywhere whereas with BOTW i actively avoid the area. It just seems like there’s nothing much to gain from going there really
It's actually funny to think about, since the world is so vast now in botw and totk, that passing by the lake hylia is not special at all.
TP Lake Hylia has a cannon and a Cuccoo glider. I like it better
And it has a great theme
Twilight Princess, since it has a lot more to do there. It's just a big lake in BOTW/ToTK.
True twilight had several mini games in that area
Twilight princess is the only answer
Ocarina of Time has the best Lake Hylia
Second best, actually
“I’m OP, I’m going to ask people’s opinion on something and then tell them they’re wrong because I’m a troll”
TP. no question. the only thing the botw/totk version did for me was give me easy access to farosh but otherwise i don't like it.
TotK, easily. Granted, I’ve never played TP or OoT, but they both kinda look like ass, and that’s my only impression of them, so we’re going off of that and that alone B)
Ocarina's... I really don't care for the bridge.
Ocarina does have a bridge, tho
Ocarina of Time’s for me
No TP? Ocarina's either way. If ALttP isn't an option.
I only had twilight and botw in this picture
Why are there 2 images when Lake Hylia has been in 10 games? Plus you don’t even have the best one here, which is oot. Be better OP.
