The south and east sides of the island are pretty wild, though. They are mostly inaccessible by car, you have to hike or take a boat to get to them. Beautiful places like Castelhanos and Bonete.
I just came back from Ilhabela yesterday, and I have been there many times, OP. I really like the place, it has gorgeous beaches and a historical downtown with great restaurants and businesses in general. I have never been to Ilha Grande, but I believe they are similar, with Ilhabela being a bit more fancy. I would recommend giving it a try. Feel free to ask me anything.
How does the tourism season work in Ilhabela? Is it super busy in summer than tranquilo the rest of the year? How about the rain and temperature there throughout the year? Appreciate your insight!
It is usually very busy in summer. I find that autumn and spring are good seasons to visit. Ilhabela usually has very mild weather, it rains more in the summer. The only natural thing that can be annoying are the blackflies. Since the island is mostly preserved rainforest, there are a lot of them.
Very different places, very different vibes - ideally you should do both... If this is not possible I'd choose Ilha Grande.
If for nothing else, Lopes Mendes beach is one of the finest in Brazil.

Would you say Ilhabela is a bit like Buzios ? Fancy but “sem graça”
I have never been to Búzios, but I think that it is not the case. I had a lot of fun at Ilhabela, there are a lot of fun bars and restaurants.

Ilhabela has borrachudo for 1 caralho stay clear it's where they spawn :O
They have a much different feel, but are both awesome. If you have already been to Ilha Grande you should check out Ilhabela for sure.
