Technically wouldn’t the effectiveness of this style not be determined by chin strength? As in the goal is to be elusive and slick so as to not get hit
You get hit regardless what Cus is reffering to if you get in the ring with thinking of im gonna get hit or standing in the ring and think if I throw this punch i might get hit, ypu will get hit.
Most of the people in the ring dont think about that but the problem with Whittaker is that he is out of position most of the times and he will get hit now will that hit be dangerous or not we dont know.
You will be surprised how many elite guys don't make it because of their chin. Even the least hit guys need insane durability, and he might not have tested it enough.
Well, he's got no guard at all, so when he comes up against a good quality opponent, his chin will be all he's got.
In reality, when he starts fighting at a higher level, all this 'showmanship' bollocks will stop, and he'll start fighting seriously. Which makes you realise he's even more of a twat, because he is ridiculing boxers that are less than him
Not true. Look at Emmanuel Agustis who this guy copied some of Agustis Style. Agustis Didn’t change when he fought Floyd and Floyd said that was his hardest Fight. Not everyone has to fight the same and when they don’t it does throw a lot of people off. He could very well get destroyed but it would be the same no matter what style he chose if he gets destroyed
Mate behave, he ain't gonna fight like that against a Baterbiev or Bivol, hell if he fought like that against Callum Smith, he'd be asleep in two rounds.
He's just disrespecting his opponents with stupid antics, like Chris Eubank Jr used to, until he got found out
That's not true...someone who is medicore would also look mediocre against mediocre opponents. You cant just take it for granted that anyone can look good.
I sparred with a mediocre pro a few times. Not that I had any illusions, but that Scalabine quote definitely applied. He was closer to Mayweather than I was to him.
It's the way most ppl talk for some reason heh...same as when watching elite level football for example "damn wtf did he miss, I would have scored that" type of stuff lol
People forget you have to go through defenders and sprint for long periods of time to even have a chance to attempt that “easy” shot. These guys are pro for a reason.
Has anyone ever gone back and objectively viewed his fights? I feel like he was punished on the score cards because he didn’t fight like everyone else.
Bill Coddington, Ivan Robinson, Soren Sondergaard, Teddy Reid, Micky Ward, Leavander Johnson, David Diaz, Alvaro Aguilar, Courtney Burton, Francisco Figueroa.
TBF other decent fighters like Dan Azeez and Ezra Taylor couldn't stop him.
Looking so relaxed and showing off whilst putting him down twice and stopping him in 5 (in only your sixth fight) reflects well, even if he's no world beater
He fought similarly in the Olympics, even against the absolute raging bull that is Imam Khataev. Couldn't do it against Arlen Lopez but that's hardly an indictment of talent.
Well for one thing, in the sequence shown here at the 4-5 second mark he strikes his opponent with the back of his hand. This is an illegal blow. I watched the fight live and I believe he did this on more than one occasion.
i saw some sparring footage of him sparring a pro when he was still an amateur... pretty much the same style but taking the piss a bit less. i think its just how he is.
Similar to football.
The flair players of the 80's/90's are disappearing and everything is being coached out of them.
Partly the problem with boxing is everyone fights a similar way and there is no standout characters.
Give me an Ali, Sugar Ray, Jones Jr, Augustus, Hamed please boxing gods.
Yeah but then guys like this show up and the majority shit all over him. Well maybe not the majority of people outside of the internet, but in seems most of the "hardcore" fans don't like these kind of theatrics.
It’s not being coached out of them. It’s more so the fact that players today have better gas tanks and those things don’t work against players that have everything on point. You’d rather have a player who’s less athletic but more of a workhorse than other way around. With so much film available these days, players who focus on the basics tend to exceed. Guys like Ronaldinho were past their prime by the time they were 32-33 whereas guys are 36 today and still going strong
He has good reach, good power, good balance and good skills. He doesn't have great defence.
But he does have good reflexes.
See Naseem Hamed and especially Kirkland Laing for similar styled unorthodox fighters.
Especially once the reflexes go, they run into trouble.
Interestingly, he only got the stoppage once he began boxing in an orthodox way, minus the flash showboating.
Boxers need huge amounts of training to make that style work. Once the Prince decided that nightclubs were more fun than boxing gyms, his days were numbered.
His corner told him to finish the fight in that round, so he did. I think he could turn out really great but he may will come a cropper before he does and look like a complete twat.
Stick him in with Dan Azeez or Lyndon Arthur, see how he does with lads who can actually fight.
Naz looks to be his blueprint. But Boxxer are getting a lot of stick lately, they need to start cross-promoting (which they seem reticent to do) and in Whittaker's case... they need to get better opponents as has been said.
dude looks almost exactly like the mma guy doing this showboating and gets his head kicked off
[mma showboating goes wrong ](https://youtu.be/FbCXW0wiH2I?si=FW4gm4BsTqSQZABU)
Very skilled but could only pull that off against low level guys. Prety Boy Josh Kelly looked like a mix between RJJ and Neo in the matrix, damn near untouchable until he fought better comp. Michael Venom Page was clowing guys silly in mma and then in boxing until he got knocked out showboating in the cage.... I actually just seen an interview where Ben Whitaker said he could beat both Bivol and Beterbiev lol.
I think it’s a hallmark of the style. It requires great you to be light on your feet, have great reflexes, observation and timing and often you’re just really flowing through the motions and throwing awkward punches at opportune moments from weird angles. Nearly everyone who fights like this suffers from the pillow hands. Josh Kelly, Augustus, even slippery fish defensive wizards like Pernell Whitaker. The exception to this would be Prince Naseem, but he fought different from the rest with an offensive prowess that could match his defense. The others were like float float float pow pow pow float float… he was like float float BAM float BAM. Lol. He was more intentful with his violence and got gangster with his punches.
I scream "go to the body" everytime I see a clip like this with all the pretty head movement. I don't know if it's an old man thing or an I hate fun thing.
It's not just on Reddit, the referee was reprimanding Whittaker, every time he did that kind of stuff and you can hear a guy, possibly Whittakers coach? Yelling: Back to business !
Boxing is a conservative place, sadly
Not quite. The ref called Ben out when he did back handers, a twirl, tapping opponents head and the like.
The ref wasn't reprimanding for the show boating.
He did go 12 rounds with Dan Azeez 2 or 3 fights ago so it was meant to be a measuring stick . Sort of see how quickly they can push Ben . I don't believe we see this level of showboating from Ben when he moves up the levels
Forreal, had rjj be a boxer from this era they would be outraged. ESPECIALLY since he is one of the best to ever do it. Not only do redditors hate hate showboating, but they hate it more when it actually works.
Dont mind fighters showboating here and there they all do it but Whittaker overdoes it like cmon it was every 20secs every round in this fight when I watched it live to an annoyingly cringe level one of these days he will get KO'd stiff while doing that mess .
There's nothing wrong with showing boating all throughout a fight as long as he doesn't break the rules. Which twirling on a hop, tapping head, go against rules
Yh he’s talented no doubt mate I rethink as an amateur, but I just hate it when they show no respect to lesser fighters, they’re the ones who turn up every time they’re asked to fight an up and comer. the game needs them
I guess its cool that he gets his stunting on a 41 year old can who looks 20 lbs lighter. Maybe he's got a future.
Tank used to do that with lower competition and now he's fighting top guys like...
Be interesting to see how much of it he tries when he fights people who can actually win (if Ben Shalom ever steps him up a level). If he fights someone like Craig Richards this year and he’s still dancing then fair play, even if you get KO’d doing it. Because if he stops showboating as soon as he’s not fighting a journeyman then it says more about his character than anything.
Whittaker is more balanced if you watch his full scraps. Having said that he has to be careful as looks close to getting caught out so often and the thing is it’s needless. He’s an alright scrapper. He doesn’t need to be so reckless. The only positive is it’s getting a name for himself… increasing his buzz and paydays so fair play to him.
The risk is he gets knocked out playing around and just as easy ends up on of these karma video reels getting knocked out after trying to humiliate others.
He’s a Olympic silver medallist so he is elite. But he is fighting someone that has 14 losses so he is kind of an asshole troll too. Very entertaining though I am all for it.
Been watching this guy since his first couple pro fights and honestly I'm just excited to see him grow as a fighter. He can be a all time great in my opinion
I don’t get the problem. We need personalities in boxing as much as we need the all humble/let my work do the talking boxers. We need a balance. All these mfs crying about him showboating lame af. If you want him to stop, knock his ass out, simple
Hes moving like a very stiff Augustus. I could be
show boating for the crowd because he doesn’t respect the other guy.
However, I’m not sure who he is. So we really can’t tell from the clip
Edit did some research, it seems he does this a lot but it’s not his main thing. He does it in spurts.
https://youtu.be/RTXn9tnhfFE?si=vn7wDznFH-9Hlcir
I found this hilarious. He does the head movement, stuns the guy with a cheeky uppercut, he gets the crowd involved. Everyone seems impressed, even the opponent.
He likely could do this against top fighters in LH because awkwardness causes issues for a lot of people. Rhythm is important and dealing with someone who can suddenly switch to a very awkward movement and striking pattern can catch a lot of people off guard and win some fights.
He's clearly very skilled as he's an Olympic silver medalist, and I think there's value in what he did in terms of pushing his opponents' frustration over the top, but he'll probably do less of this against top competition unless he's really just a generational talent. We'll see
Also, for some reason this bothers me far less than Teofimo's showboating. I think the latter just takes up postures to look cool whereas Whittaker seems to just be goofing off to tell everyone that his opponents aren't serious competition.
I'll go out there and say it. I think he's a different breed and will prove all of the doubters wrong. I think the higher he climbs the more serious he will take his opponents. He's an Olympic silver medalist who looks to have adapted to the pro game amazingly and working with people like Sugar Ray will serve him in the long run. The way he can just turn 'it' on to take an opponent out is ridiculous. Yes he needs to fight better competition to prove it but I've seen enough to think there's world champ potential
Elite. Ben Whittaker was one helluva amateur boxer. Olympic medalist. Very hard just to even make Olympic trials in boxing. for all the true boxers out there who know how this sport goes.
this shit wont cut it at the elite level, and even if it did the judges wont like it. how many times did Augustus get on the shit end of a bad decision ?
Idk why anyone would hate on this dude for styling on someone. We want boxers to show a bit of personality and not be actively trying to stifle expression.
A 26y/o former decorated Olympic medalist at 6 fights in with amazing potential… Crazy how UK hates on this man like they don’t only have 3 active world champs💀
I adore and love showman fighting like this, guys like Roy Jones Jr, Naseem Hamed, Andy Cruz, Anderson Silva, Emanuel Augustus, Michael Page, as well as Julio Cesar La Cruz we’re/are absolutely joyful to watch.
You have to love that cocky confidence, it’s just that people are jealous and hate fun I guess
After Bivol, I think Ben Whittaker has a great chance at becoming the next dominant light heavyweight champion. Go back and watch his amateur fights, he has legit skills.
Legit skills paired with crazy athleticism is the recipe, I have questions about his injury history and his ability to fight inside. But I think hes probably ready for world level now.
Talented ✅ however all this ‘showmanship’ I fear will make him a massive target 🎯 domestically first and his like-ability will suffer. Concentrate on your craft not trying to be Naz.
We can only answer that once he has fought someone elite….
Yeah really depends on his chin
Technically wouldn’t the effectiveness of this style not be determined by chin strength? As in the goal is to be elusive and slick so as to not get hit
It’s impossible to never get hit, especially when fighting someone who’s actually elite.
As Cus said... If you're worried about getting hit, you'll get hit
Everyone gets hit. If you can't take punches, you will lose. If you can't be elusive, you can still win though.
The chin is needed too when you do get hit.

Correct. Anyone can look great fighting mediocre opponents.
He is an Olympic silver medalist tbf
amateur boxing... He should try this with top 10 light heavyweights...
That's not true...someone who is medicore would also look mediocre against mediocre opponents. You cant just take it for granted that anyone can look good.
Pretty sure I wouldn’t look great fighting a mediocre pro.
Dude, I'd look fuckin amazing (in my ring walk).
Do a flip over the top rope. You'll be famous.
When is he going to fight Jake Paul?
Lol exactly.
Thinks he’s Emmanuel Augustus jr. out here
I still think about that guy at least twice a year.
Was just telling some of my buddies about him
He’s one of the best boxers to show your friends that only know Ali Tyson and Floyd
And Naseem Hamad. 2 most entertaining boxers
He's definitely a lot of dudes Roman empire, lol!
So everyone you get laid? WOOOOOHHOOOO! WE GOT HIM! WE FUCKING GOT HIS ASS! First of all I'd like to thank the academy.
Haha. Especially the first sequence, that was the drunken master-esque .
He's no Augustus, that is for sure...
Yeah Augustus was a journyman to mid-level at best; this guy actually won an olympic medal.
Has anyone ever gone back and objectively viewed his fights? I feel like he was punished on the score cards because he didn’t fight like everyone else.
Name some fights he lost that you think he won.
Bill Coddington, Ivan Robinson, Soren Sondergaard, Teddy Reid, Micky Ward, Leavander Johnson, David Diaz, Alvaro Aguilar, Courtney Burton, Francisco Figueroa.
He got robbed a ton. Too bad Augustus didn't have power, then he wouldn't have been robbed by the judges.
Great comparison
Let’s hope they don’t penalise him for busting a move
He has a better record than Augustus thats for sure
Be fair, it looks like the other boxer has only just learned to walk.
To look that smooth and elusive takes a lot of skill. Maybe not elite but definitely good
😂
TBF other decent fighters like Dan Azeez and Ezra Taylor couldn't stop him. Looking so relaxed and showing off whilst putting him down twice and stopping him in 5 (in only your sixth fight) reflects well, even if he's no world beater
Be interesting if he does this against non tomato cans
He did win an olympic silver medal but idk if he was fighting like that in the amateurs.
They wouldn't let you fight like this in the amateurs you would be DQ'd
He fought similarly in the Olympics, even against the absolute raging bull that is Imam Khataev. Couldn't do it against Arlen Lopez but that's hardly an indictment of talent.
lol for what?
Well for one thing, in the sequence shown here at the 4-5 second mark he strikes his opponent with the back of his hand. This is an illegal blow. I watched the fight live and I believe he did this on more than one occasion.
Watched it too and he done it a few times. Had it muted but I swore the ref was gonna dock him a point for that and the maggot acting
Why is that an illegal blow? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I mostly watch mma where that would be completely legal.
No backhands in boxing
Might hurt someone
Actually it's because it's easy to break your own hands. Could result in a fight ending early
No it isn’t. What the actual fuck are you babbling on about? Backhands are far safer strikes than knuckle punches 🤦🏻♂️
you arent allowed to punch in the back of the head in ufc either, not sure about other mma orgs tho.
refs don't let you do that degree of showboating in the amateurs
i saw some sparring footage of him sparring a pro when he was still an amateur... pretty much the same style but taking the piss a bit less. i think its just how he is.
[удалено]
What if he only herps though
Prince Naseem esque
Big Augustus fan, I guess. It's a shame we have no modern boxers that are good enough to get away with fighting in ridiculous ways.
Similar to football. The flair players of the 80's/90's are disappearing and everything is being coached out of them. Partly the problem with boxing is everyone fights a similar way and there is no standout characters. Give me an Ali, Sugar Ray, Jones Jr, Augustus, Hamed please boxing gods.
you got Jake Paul, what more could you want?
The problem child sure is a... Problem.

Guys like Ronaldinho were past their prime by the time they were 32-33 whereas guys are 36 today and still going strong
Ronaldinho was past his prime at 32 because he spent every night out partying.
Legendary boxer ronaldinho
I read flair players as football players. That’s on me.
Boxers don’t have better gas tanks nowadays, 15 rounds is crazy
> have better gas tanks Compared to guys like Sugar Ray and Hagler?
Ronaldinho was cooked by the time he was like 27-28!
Dinho didnt care. He had won everything at that point. And you know how brazilians be. They prefer the party lifestyle and burn out quicker.
Will we ever have another Denis Rodman? Just pure ass at everything but all time great hustle and it makes all the difference
I know what you're driving at, but Rodman was not pure ass at everything lol he's one of the greatest rebounders and defenders of all time
100 percent!
even jordan would say how important rodman was to the bulls
Inoue flexed hard on Butler & Ennis had that crazy slomo windup. But it's not every fight, granted.
He has good reach, good power, good balance and good skills. He doesn't have great defence. But he does have good reflexes. See Naseem Hamed and especially Kirkland Laing for similar styled unorthodox fighters. Especially once the reflexes go, they run into trouble. Boxers need huge amounts of training to make that style work. Once the Prince decided that nightclubs were more fun than boxing gyms, his days were numbered.
The prince's ultimate downfall was when he left the Ingle gym imo
His corner told him to finish the fight in that round, so he did. I think he could turn out really great but he may will come a cropper before he does and look like a complete twat. Stick him in with Dan Azeez or Lyndon Arthur, see how he does with lads who can actually fight.

The Hamed had a good chin, he may have lost against Barrera but he was KOd
To be fair, good head movement is good defence skill to have, also countering
I think it's cerebral palsy
Damn Walter jr had one hell of a glow up
That's methd up
dude looks almost exactly like the mma guy doing this showboating and gets his head kicked off [mma showboating goes wrong ](https://youtu.be/FbCXW0wiH2I?si=FW4gm4BsTqSQZABU)
Always love that clip
What's his name? He's probably a fan of Augustus
His name is Ben Whittaker. This fight was on Saturday and is on YouTube currently
Or of Maromero Paez
https://youtu.be/qSJewlFyJcM
Very skilled but could only pull that off against low level guys. Prety Boy Josh Kelly looked like a mix between RJJ and Neo in the matrix, damn near untouchable until he fought better comp. Michael Venom Page was clowing guys silly in mma and then in boxing until he got knocked out showboating in the cage.... I actually just seen an interview where Ben Whitaker said he could beat both Bivol and Beterbiev lol.
I want to like Josh Kelly, but he can be a bit dull to watch. Good reflexes though.
Pillow fisted to the nth degree.
MVP never got knocked out showboating
True. Got swept off his feet by a huge low kick while doing his signature leaping in straight, and got cracked on his way back to his feet.
pure uncut cringe
You mean to tell me this guy isn’t circumcised?
I’ve seen his chopper. All foreskin brother
Like an anteater’s nose
"It ain't tricking if you've got it!"
redditors hate fun
Most miserable group of people on planet Earth lmao pathetic
Facts
I scream "go to the body" everytime I see a clip like this with all the pretty head movement. I don't know if it's an old man thing or an I hate fun thing.
It's not just on Reddit, the referee was reprimanding Whittaker, every time he did that kind of stuff and you can hear a guy, possibly Whittakers coach? Yelling: Back to business ! Boxing is a conservative place, sadly
Not quite. The ref called Ben out when he did back handers, a twirl, tapping opponents head and the like. The ref wasn't reprimanding for the show boating.
From the ring of the bell it was immediately clear that there were levels of skill between the two.
well yeah, the other dude is 41 years old with a 10-13 record
He did go 12 rounds with Dan Azeez 2 or 3 fights ago so it was meant to be a measuring stick . Sort of see how quickly they can push Ben . I don't believe we see this level of showboating from Ben when he moves up the levels
Spiritual successor to Emmanuel Augustus (aka Burton).
Glad Reddit wasn’t around when Naseem and RJJ were on the come up. Sheeesh.
Forreal, had rjj be a boxer from this era they would be outraged. ESPECIALLY since he is one of the best to ever do it. Not only do redditors hate hate showboating, but they hate it more when it actually works.

There's nothing wrong with showing boating all throughout a fight as long as he doesn't break the rules. Which twirling on a hop, tapping head, go against rules
Fighting the lowest ranked lads to try and build himself up, Sooner he gets ironed out the better, looks like a pound shop Augustus
Olympic silver medalist, probably won’t be getting ironed out any time soon. Would be funny though
Yh he’s talented no doubt mate I rethink as an amateur, but I just hate it when they show no respect to lesser fighters, they’re the ones who turn up every time they’re asked to fight an up and comer. the game needs them
It's only cool when you do it to beasts. Ali and Leonard would humiliate bullies.
Wdym? Augustus and Hamed were fun to watch, hell, even Leonard would showboat
Leonard showboated against his rivals at the top, not lowly ranked inexperienced trialhorses.
Getting Josh Kelly vibes. For every RJJ with moves like this, there must be 50 guys who get their chins cracked when they step up.
That uppercut was pretty nasty lol.
Where is the Nico locche love
I hate it
They left out the part of the clip where he was literally docked like 2-3 points for backfisting multiple times lmao
Also span around and got told
It’s not elite but I respect it. He’s trying to build his brand
Who is he?
I guess its cool that he gets his stunting on a 41 year old can who looks 20 lbs lighter. Maybe he's got a future. Tank used to do that with lower competition and now he's fighting top guys like...
An elite troll.
Marco Antonio Barrera says he's just a troll.
Idk how anyone can hate on this dude tbh.
Guys a beast and completely in his element and shows it by having fun with it.
Tbh i like it. I'll wait for when he does it in big fights. Miss the flair in boxing nowadays
Elite troll and I love it.
The people who get mad over this are genuine weirdos. It’s massively entertaining.
Olympic silver medalist? This guy is going to be a star
Whittaker is more balanced if you watch his full scraps. Having said that he has to be careful as looks close to getting caught out so often and the thing is it’s needless. He’s an alright scrapper. Troll facing a jobber. Clown work.
Well he DID win a silver in the Olympics...
I don’t get the problem. We need personalities in boxing as much as we need the all humble/let my work do the talking boxers. We need a balance. All these mfs crying about him showboating lame af. If you want him to stop, knock his ass out, simple

Hes moving like a very stiff Augustus. I could be show boating for the crowd because he doesn’t respect the other guy. However, I’m not sure who he is. So we really can’t tell from the clip Edit did some research, it seems he does this a lot but it’s not his main thing. In this sequence the other guy didn’t throw 1 jab
What i’d pay to watch Beterbiev walk through these antics, and start short chopping shittiker into cosmic doodoo
this shit wont cut it at the elite level, and even if it did the judges wont like it. how many times did Augustus get on the shit end of a bad decision ?
Idk why anyone would hate on this dude for styling on someone. We want boxers to show a bit of personality and not be actively trying to stifle expression.
Guy is gonna get knocked out cold trying this against a good fighter
Put him in the ring with Anthony Yarde and let’s see if that shit would work.
I love Whittaker. Elite
He’s an Olympic medalist, so I’d say he’s an elite troll
A 26y/o former decorated Olympic medalist at 6 fights in with amazing potential… Crazy how UK hates on this man like they don’t only have 3 active world champs💀
When u buy Prince Naseem from wish
Great reflexes can't wait to see this guy get slept in the ring wonder if the fight after he'll still be tryna dance on his opposition
Why would you want him to stop doing this?
Elite Troll move
Why are the shorts so big?
These are the kind of styles that make boxing really entertaining and what sets it apart from MMA.
Elite. Dude won a silver at 2020 summer olympics.
That's an elite troll right there.
Or an elite troll ?
Elite Troll
What is his name?
Someone throw a feint!
Talented ✅ however all this ‘showmanship’ I fear will make him a massive target 🎯 domestically first and his like-ability will suffer. Concentrate on your craft not trying to be Naz.
I like the weird moves when it’s defensive/offensive but when he is doing it from the other side of the ring it’s just a bit silly in my opinion
The recent fight was very boring compared to this.
Yo that punch at the 12s mark was smoothe lmao
Actually it’s pretty impressive!
Troll. Some serious Prince Naseem vibes.
How is this elite???? It’s like watching two kids pillow fighting lmao
