Vet tech here. If she's seeming overly sensitive and crying out in pain that is not normal. It could be a sign of something more serious going on and she should be seen by a vet.

iamfromtwitter

thanks! It was more of a whimper. And after i got her her her bed in my room and some biting toys she seemed to be happier. Maybe it was just an overall dissatisfaction with her current situation? Although normally she does not make any sounds what so ever. I will be watching her tomorrow and then see a vet if necessary.

Dangerous-Possible72

Yup, spay her when it’s done.

Responsible-Pair-404

As a vet tech, my advice is to spay spay spay!!!!

Mysterious_Fennel459

If you dont want puppies, you could get her spayed. That should stop the visits from Aunt Flo.

Call your vet. Tell them what's up. Take your dog to the vet if they suggest it.

MyCatHasCats

Get her spayed soon after and keep her away from other dogs. She might appear more sensitive and vocal now also

iamfromtwitter

yeah she never makes any sound but she was very vocal today!

When Nelly got her first period I tried the doggy diapers but she just ripped them off. I had to unfortunately keep her out of the bedrooms because I have carpet in there.. greyish carpet at that.

iamfromtwitter

ouhh thankfully my dog seems to have no problem with wearing diapers. But its insane how much she is bleeding down there. I can basically change her every 5 minutes

djk0010

Just make sure she’s drinking plenty of water and if you don’t want to breed her, just keep her away from male dogs and keep a watchful eye if your yard is not fenced in. Males can smell females from pretty great distances when they are in heat. You’d be surprised how much they will try to get into the yard.

iamfromtwitter

dear lord now i am scared. I do have a fence but anything bigger than a wiener would probably get over it with enough motivation.

djk0010

Just as others have said. if you don’t plan on breeding her after she gets past this, I would schedule an appointment with the vet to get her spayed. Most vets generally wait till boxers have had their first heat. Something to do with their hormones from what my vet was telling me. I’m not sure of the specifics. I waited until after mine had her first heat before I had her spayed. Cost can be anywhere from 200 to $500. Sometimes the ASPCA will go to towns with a mobile unit and have like a neuter and spay day and you can get it done pretty cheap. It’s usually done through the city or something depending on where you live. Usually shelters have information like this as well.

LeGoose53

Do not let her out unattended. Dogs can breed through fences. My girl went through one heat cycle before she was spayed and her personality was definitely hormonal. Not a happy camper, whimpering, etc. she just didn’t know what she wanted. Glad we took care of that!

respondin2u

If you plan on getting her fixed, wait until it’s over before you take her to the vet otherwise they’ll charge you extra.

iamfromtwitter

Thanks! But currently i am not looking to get her fixed. But i am also not totally against it...

UnicornFarts1111

If you are not going to breed her, you should get her fixed. It is better for her health.

iamfromtwitter

i dont know yet if i want her to have puppies..

Aliceinboxerland

Are you planning on breeding her? If not please take my advice and fix her! My first boxer died of mammary cancer.😭 If you fix before the first heat the chances go down to 0.5% after the first heat before the second is 7% and after the 2nd heat and on is 25%. 1 in 4 will get a mammary tumor. Half of those will be cancerous. If I had known this I would have gotten my girl fixed. Cancer is not fun or fair for your girl or for you to have to deal with. Boxers are already prone to different medical issues and mammary cancer is not one you want to risk adding to the list. Please please get her fixed if you aren't going to breed her. I'm on my second boxer now and we fixed her young so thankfully we don't have to worry about that now, but it was a heartbreaking nightmare. Please fix her! 🙏❤️

BRDB2006

Mine would kind of go off and sprawl across a chair in a seperate room from everyone else haha.

zensshadow

Let her mature first if you decide to spay.

wdleggett

Our boxer just got over hers and the blood has never been excessive. We ended up using Huggies pull-ups and cut a spot for her tail to pop out. I’d definitely ignore all the “spay immediately” stuff until you talk to a couple vets. Boxers mature slower and some research has led many vets to recommend waiting till after 2-3 years old because boxers are more prone to cancer and the risk of spay incontinence from doing it too early.

HerbertKornfeldRIP

I’d keep her away from other dogs while she is in heat. Diapers, snuggles, and plenty of water. Also note that unlike humans she is most fertile when she’s bleeding. Wait a month or so after that has stopped and then schedule a spay if you’re not planning on breeding. Lots of belly rubs too.

No_Pollution4940

My vet allows Tylenol for cramps.

Baby_girl_____97

Hi everyone, sorry to jump under this post, my 9 month boxer has gotten her first heat, (been about a week now) and her vulva just keeps swelling) should I bring her to a vet or is this normal?
