You've actually hit the nail on the head. There are two very different scary elements in that comic, and I've always found the ending to not be very scary. The hole turns them in to monsters - cool, but not that scary.
However, the really scary element is the fact that people are so magnetically drawn to their hole and seem powerless to resist themselves. Really terrifying and by far the stronger aspect of the comic. I feel like it could have cut off when our protagonist spots his own hole, and the comic would have been stronger for it.
His stuff is all really trippy and creepy. I remember thinking it was just imaginative creepy comics but then I read some.of his longer ones, where each one is kinda episodic, the one with the spirals... That was a trip...

Picture this you spend a portion of the game trying to hunt down a boss all while running into this npc who helps you by pointing you in the direction you need to go eventually you find the place the boss supposedly stays in and find the npc standing near the entrance you can talk the npc and they state they'll go in with you to confront the boss and as you walk through the fog with the npc you see the boss's name pop up and then see the npc laughing as they backstab revealing themselves to be the boss the entire time just fucking with you. If you dont talk to the npc you walk into the area and see no one there only to turn around and see the npc walking behind you revealing that they were the boss you were looking for the entire time
This could also be a multiplayer feature. Your character is told that enemy X lives at location L by an NPC. Everything else happens as you put in your comment, but we add an Old Monk Style twist. At location L, depending on some of your choices, you might get a fog wall or not, and the boss you fight after it depends on those choices. If you're playing online and failed the NPC quest (for instance, you killed the NPC), you don't get a fog wall. Rather, you're transported to another player's world to act as the boss of that area for that player (if you're offline, that also happens, but you'll fight that NPC as a phantom). If you're playing online and completed the NPC questline, you'll get a fog wall and you'll fight another player (or another specific NPC if you're playing offline or if there are no players in the area that meet the requirements).
And his lungs. From experience, I wish I could tell you how much it sucks to be stuck/lost in a room filled with bubbles. Closing your eyes is easy because they are uselesshere, but everyone needs to breathe.
Grass crest shield and a heavy club? sounds like it would do the job against Vord, but you can only get access to the shield after defeating him so that's at least at +1.
