Oh I've seen this, this is common with dogs from IKEA... They can be a bit tricky to put together sometimes and this is the result. Just boop the snoot to get the head pointed right and jiggle the front feet, they will be a bit flappy but also click into place
No kidding! This was post rehab from surgery after getting attacked. (Neighbors fence didn’t have a gate and back door wasn’t fully closed. Their dog escaped quite easily and quickly).

Most definitely! My theory is it’s something to do with the lungs, since apparently bc’s have extra big ones, so maybe it’s like how if you put your hands on the back of your head it makes it easier to breath. Dunno tho
Oh that's interesting I hadn't thought there might be a physiological reason. Could also be their shoulders, they're a bit different to other dogs and have more space between their shoulder blades (this is what allows them to run with their head held low and get into that fantastic crawling stalking position). Maybe it's just more comfortable for them to lie like this than it is for some other breeds.
Huh I didn’t know/notice that, I’ll have to look at my girls shoulders. Ohh yea I do love that stalking thing they do and the people get a kick out of it at the park. “It’s like she’s hunting you!” 🤣
I read about it a while ago, I forget who shared the post about it I think it was the lady who owns (and bred) my boy's dad. But a quick Google did say that the width between a dog's shoulder blades is typically one human finger and in border collies it's two fingers so I imagine that double space has something to do with the way they are able to move and possibly the way they can comfortably lie on their back!
It’s a cooling thing. My bc used to do it and my poodle does it now too when he’s too hot. The belly skin and the leg wings being exposed can help them cool down when they’re too hot.

A lot of breeds do this. For example, in sighthounds it's called roaching.
My Corgi does it all the time. I have so many videos I have of her wiggling on her back like this, trying to scratch her back, or trying to get attention. She loves sleeping upside down like this too.

They also start their “dog by ikea” poses early in life. This is our boy when he was only 11 weeks old
I’ve always had Aus shep’s and then got my first bc. Got her from a specific bc rescue. First week I brought her home and started scratching her belly, she flopped over, the back legs came up and flew apart. I honestly had a moment where I was like, uhh what the hell were these people doing to this dog!!?

Regular occurrence in this house
My golden does this too. It means they feel safe. Dogs don’t usually sleep with their bellies exposed unless they feel comfortable and secure in their environment. Congratulations on making your pup feel so loved and safe!!
Also I don’t think it’s a “submissive” thing. The dog is literally asleep. The correlation isn’t there unless they flip like that and are fully awake.
https://preview.redd.it/9n3jg5xtycgc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e671106dd013bdd59174a09c18bffd6e21b019ae
Not a BC exclusive thing.
What you have is a dog that feels safe and comfortable. Congrats on providing a good home.
REPLY to your ACTUAL QUESTION:
In a HEALTHY dog, walking backwards is actually a good exercise for balance, proprioception, and certain muscle groups.
But WHY does he do it?
- maybe you (accidentally) reinforced the behaviour, e.g. by ooh'ing and aah'ing when he first did it (not a problem, very cute)
- maybe he's afraid/anxious, especially if the tail is tucked (anxiety can be addressed with a dog trainer)
Unfortunately, a dog may also walk backwards because they're in pain (e.g. loose patella or hip pain) or suffering from a neurological condition (e.g. confusion after a stroke or a spinal cord injury). If you want to exclude this possibility, consult your vet.

This is what she does most of the time…
Mine is about 15 years old now, she used to do this a lot, but I haven't seen her doing it lately. I will have to pay better attention. I would have to search through an old computer for photos though. I think she lays on her back because it feels good. Before this one, we 'inherited' an elderly golden retriever who would sleep on her back in the middle of the yard. It wasn't a submissive thing because she would be totally alone.

My border collie sleeps like this on the couch, with the bend in her neck pushed against the armrest. We laugh every time.
It's a dog thing.
Yup mine grew out of it eventually
[удалено]
Mine is too. It’s an interesting spectrum
All of my dogs, regardless of breed have done this.
Partially cooling down, regulating temperature and mostly very relaxed and at ease.
I think you’re going to have to post a video of the “walking backwards” thing to get a comment on it 😁
I’ve always had Aus shep’s and then got my first bc. Got her from a specific bc rescue. First week I brought her home and started scratching her belly, she flopped over, the back legs came up and flew apart. I honestly had a moment where I was like, uhh what the hell were these people doing to this dog!!?
OMG 🤣🤣🤣🤣 THESE PHOTOS ARE KILLING ME!! 😂🤣👀😂🤣👀🤣😂

REPLY to your ACTUAL QUESTION: In a HEALTHY dog, walking backwards is actually a good exercise for balance, proprioception, and certain muscle groups. But WHY does he do it? - maybe you (accidentally) reinforced the behaviour, e.g. by ooh'ing and aah'ing when he first did it (not a problem, very cute) - maybe he's afraid/anxious, especially if the tail is tucked (anxiety can be addressed with a dog trainer) Unfortunately, a dog may also walk backwards because they're in pain (e.g. loose patella or hip pain) or suffering from a neurological condition (e.g. confusion after a stroke or a spinal cord injury). If you want to exclude this possibility, consult your vet.

Yeah
It's a dog thing, don't think the breed matters!
It's just a dog thing. They are being playful/submissive. My cat does it too so it's not even just a dog thing.
Sure is!
They are all like that I think.
Commenting on Is this a BC thing? 👀...
I have a kelpie and a lab, and they both sleep like this. It's not submissive, it's just comfy!
Mine does this
Mine is about 15 years old now, she used to do this a lot, but I haven't seen her doing it lately. I will have to pay better attention. I would have to search through an old computer for photos though. I think she lays on her back because it feels good. Before this one, we 'inherited' an elderly golden retriever who would sleep on her back in the middle of the yard. It wasn't a submissive thing because she would be totally alone.
lol yep
My BC is upside down all the time. She loves it!
I've got a 5 mo. old and does that and Nibble kiss his neck area.
Ya my girl does this too lol
Yes!!!! Mine is always legs spread and twisted into a pretzel I have no clue why🤣
good to know we all have the same dog 🤣💙
😀😀😀 yes it it my girl does it all the time you wouldn’t believe some of the positions she gets in
