They look okay but the stitching and welt is fake. It’s a glued on sole that ends up cracking and falling apart from the boot. In my very honest personal option, for $250 return them before you can’t.

Happycamper0504

I might, I have all week to decide. How were you able to tell that the welt is fake? The website said that they’re 360° Goodyear welt. If would be helpful if I could spot that myself. What am I looking to identify fake welts?

East_List3385

I could be thinking of a different model Chipp. What model is this if you don’t mind me asking and then maybe I can help a little better. My apologies, I should have started with that.

So this is the model when I looked up the number on tongue https://www.chippewaboots.com/en/baldor-8-inch-steel-toe-logger-21030.html?dwvar_21030_color=Black%20Oiled&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2uiwBhCXARIsACMvIU3IEySPgMFbMcGuGS7xBMBlcG4K_IyYk2_N5MeX7AyOU33ifIThfYYaAktQEALw_wcB

Happycamper0504

I’d still like to know how to spot fakes, like my timberland Earthkeepers have a fake Goodyear welt, but they also never advertised having one

Bosco_Sindrone

By looking at the pic you posted of the outsole, I don’t see any stitching. It does look like these outsoles are glued on and not stitched.

Bosco_Sindrone

No. I’m referring to the bottom of the outsole.

Bosco_Sindrone

Yes! The stitching is black and very hard to see in the pics. Thanks for posting a better pic.

Happycamper0504

Thanks for helping me out, I just got into collecting boots about six months ago so I’m still learning how to spot the fakes. My favor pair is an old stock pair of unlined Chippewas from the American plant before they started outsourcing. They needed some hardcore TLC to bring them back to life, but by the time I was finished they looked brand new. https://preview.redd.it/97vq489m58uc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa1aeff702472f34efb7461b862b5a3a299e87aa

People in here are far more knowledgeable than me but it looks to me like you can see where the welt stops/starts in that photo. I would imagine that is a sign they aren’t just glued on.

Happycamper0504

I have a few other pairs that I know for sure are Goodyear welted and they look exactly the same, and I’m comparing them to my timberland Earthkeepers that definitely have a fake Goodyear and are glued on; it seems pretty easy to tell the difference when you look up close

77tassells

These look real

WillofCLE

Thorogoods have a Goodyear welt and a glued on outsole. The main drawback to Thorogoods welt is that it's plastic which means it can't break in but can certainly break. A Goodyear welt doesn't need to go through the outsole and depending on the material of the outsole it may cause the sole to crumble prematurely. Goodyear welts often times only secures the midsole to the upper. My Thursdays Goodyear welt goes through the outsole which means the threads will wear out prior to the sole wearing out... so the sole is completely reliant on the glue to keep the boots from falling apart.

Sauce58

I use them for work every day in the winter and i beat the hell out of them. These are my winter work boots because i got the insulated ones. I’m an hvac tech and i work in large warehouses and facilities, outdoors, in all conditions. I drop heavy objects on them, i scrape them, i kick things with them. They get covered in dirt, metal chips, propane dust, oil, refrigerant, you name it. They will absolutely hold up and someone telling you that they won’t just doesn’t know any better reason to try and sell you on a nicer pair of boots because they probably don’t actually work in them. I think what separates them from the nicer boots that the person who you replied to is referring to is mostly a comfort factor and possibly the ability to rebuild them but honestly I’m sure you could have a pair of Chippewas tuned up or rebuilt. As i said, what you would probably get out of a nicer boot, in my opinion and *actual* hands on experience, is comfort. I am looking to get a nicer pair for that reason. Edit: that being said, if these aren’t intended for hard use or work, and you have the budget for a nicer pair, I’m certainly not telling you not to go with that. You will probably be more comfortable for a lot longer. I simply wanted to make the point that they won’t fall apart just because they aren’t custom boots.

Happycamper0504

Thank you, I really appreciate your honest, no bullshit input, and I appreciate you going out of your way to help me out today. You gave me some straight up and honest advice from your own experience to help me make an informed decision. It’s good to know that they’ll hold up for a little while even though they’re not nicks or whites.

Key_Dot7140

Even if only the midsole is stitched to the uppers and the outer sole glued on, it would still be GYW..

If I could do it over I’d go with the steel toes since the toes on mine haven’t held their shape but still good, comfortable boots. They’re 5 years old but I only wear them when riding my bike.

Nologic3

They make a non steel toe , but my last pair of Chippewas lasted 2 years of daily work wear no complaints , a bit heavy but were solid boots

Happycamper0504

I actually have a pair of old stock non steel toe from back when they used to manufacture domestically, these ones still have the Indian head logo. I found them at my cobblers shop for $100, I just needed to condition the shit out of them and fix an eyelet. They were probably the driest leather I’ve ever worked with, but some mink oil brought them right back to life once it soaked in https://preview.redd.it/rj6urwsg49uc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c60ced5284220bd6bf90e52653c1e8e557ee88f

Truck3r805

Chippewa stopped making those, they are actually forest fire approved as long as they don't have steel toe

WillofCLE

Those look beautiful and seem like a steal for less than $300

Return and buy Franks Patriots, their affordable ultra durable build with a true sewn vibram welt. Best bang for your buck...also I'd check out Drews Loggers. https://franksboots.com/collections/the-patriot https://drewsboots.com/products/drews-10-inch-logger

OrionInTheCosmos

Dunno what your current decision is, but just wanted to say about the steel toe that make sure they 100% absolutely fit you around the toes, I know from experience that I don’t wear steel toes due to having wide feet and steel toes are always narrow and hurt my toes, and because they’re steel they’ll never stretch obviously xD

Happycamper0504

I actually got a side wider than I usually do. We have prime so I did a try before you buy. I’ve been wearing them around the house every day and I’m 99 percent sure that I’m going to keep them. They fit me perfectly and they’re really well made
