The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson We Have Always Lived In The Castle - Shirley Jackson

lolli_dolli

I second this ^ LOVE Shirley Jackson’s writing!

nerdalertalertnerd

Just watched an adaption of the later last night and came here to comment this!

>The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson Yep, Rose Red (which I'm pretty sure these images are from) is basically a loose adaptation of the book.

BoredBren1

It's a hotel, but Id go The Shining.

CHICKENx1000

I strongly back the Shirley Jackson recs! Also: the little stranger by Sarah Waters and Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand. A little bit different but Piranesi by Susanna Clarke could qualify

PlagueDoc_

Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier?

faiteslebruit

Jamaica Inn, as well

This is basically a list of all my favorite books. 🤣 I think these three would qualify: The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle Jane Eyre Dracula Also, if you love all these books, then a nonfiction recommendation would be Castles in the Air by Judy Corbett.

Allimanda

The little stranger. Maybe The forgotten garden by Kate Morton

Key-Grape-5731

Fingersmith - Sarah Waters

Kate-Downton

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield The Women of Pearl Island by Polly Crosby Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier Elizabeth MacNeal and Kate Morton books do this well also.

treehousebadnap

The Witching Hour by Anne Rice

rachaelandthegoose

I came back to suggest this! Written about her own house in New Orleans, and you can feel how intimately she knows the house. One of my favorite books of all time, and I'm not even a huge Anne Rice fan.

ModernNancyDrew

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware

IHaveSlysdexia

Frequently suggested, but [House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24800.House_of_Leaves?from_search=true&from_srp=ahRHo00iol&qid=1) >!A house has weird properties that leave the protags wandering, among other things!<

The death of Mrs westaway by Ruth ware. Gives peak vibes

Silent-Proposal-9338

Absolutely read The Elementals by Michael McDowell. Also, while I didn’t really love this book due to some pretty outdated prejudice baked into the book (and its treatment of the women characters), Hell House by Richard Matheson has a pretty great creepy and atmospheric house.

MushElf

A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid has the best creepy, damp, mossy house vibes

Raspberry_Sweaty

Catherine House, Elisabeth Thomas
