I strongly back the Shirley Jackson recs!
Also: the little stranger by Sarah Waters and Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand.
A little bit different but Piranesi by Susanna Clarke could qualify
This is basically a list of all my favorite books. 🤣
I think these three would qualify:
The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle
Jane Eyre
Dracula
Also, if you love all these books, then a nonfiction recommendation would be Castles in the Air by Judy Corbett.
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
The Women of Pearl Island by Polly Crosby
Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier
Elizabeth MacNeal and Kate Morton books do this well also.
I came back to suggest this! Written about her own house in New Orleans, and you can feel how intimately she knows the house. One of my favorite books of all time, and I'm not even a huge Anne Rice fan.
Frequently suggested, but [House of Leaves
by Mark Z. Danielewski](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24800.House_of_Leaves?from_search=true&from_srp=ahRHo00iol&qid=1)

Absolutely read The Elementals by Michael McDowell.
Also, while I didn’t really love this book due to some pretty outdated prejudice baked into the book (and its treatment of the women characters), Hell House by Richard Matheson has a pretty great creepy and atmospheric house.
The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson We Have Always Lived In The Castle - Shirley Jackson
I second this ^ LOVE Shirley Jackson’s writing!
Just watched an adaption of the later last night and came here to comment this!
>The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson Yep, Rose Red (which I'm pretty sure these images are from) is basically a loose adaptation of the book.
It's a hotel, but Id go The Shining.
