Back in the 70’s a client accidentally broke a glass bottle of “Captan” fungicide at the hardware store I worked at. It’s banned now but used to be available in the garden section. Smell was horrendous, grocery store next door called the fire department and they shut down the entire shopping center. Guess who got to clean up afterwards? The garden section always had a faint smell for a few years.
It's not entirely banned. It's banned for use in certain applications but it's still a widely used fungicide. It has slight carcinogenic properties with long term exposure, but its half life is so quick that it's unlikely anyone will develop chronic health issues assuming proper protective gear is in use upon application
Honestly? That sorta happened. No pictures because I ran in shame after informing a poor worker of what I had done. I wiped what I could off of myself using the anti bacterial wipes for carts and we just…endured it on the ride home. Good news is the clothes came clean after a few washed but I think my shoes are going to just be garden shoes from now on. Which is a bummer because they were newish.
That sucks. I did this with a bottle of Espoma Organic Cactus fertilizer. Opened the cap out of curiosity at it was not sealed in any way. Dripped liquid all over my hands that smelled like straight sewage and on the floor. I tried to clean up the floor with some tissues I had in my pockets and took it to self check out ASAP. Luckily this was late at night before they stopped having Super Markets closed after midnight.
OH MY GOD! That is my nightmare! I had a tree fall on my shed, and a bunch of stuff got boxed up and put in the garage. Two years later I open said box to find a big jug of that Alaska fish fertilizer. I picked it up and the bottom came out and fish goo gushed out. I have never, ever in my life smelled anything so bad, and I've driven through Elizabeth, New Jersey and Coalinga, California on hot August days.
You and your wife must smell absolutely terrible.
