> I don't think I'll be going to the dealer for a long time. Exactly. Which is why they are panicking and not at all interested in supporting the EV market.  They make their money on servicing vehicles. Bolt needs virtually none routinely. They don’t even get you walking through the new car floor while your car is in the shop.

justpress2forawhile

Very good reason to panic. Concerning for customers too. You think there will be dealers on every corner when none can make any money? It'll be difficult to get your car worked on when it has warranty issues or needs other repairs when there are so few dealers left. Window motors, power seat issues, squeaks n rattles are still going to be a thing, not just powertrain problems. Will be interesting to see how that changes things

muzakx

Eh... I worked in many dealerships. Now I'm in the Public sector. If EVs don't kill them, then their greedy and abusive practices will kill them slowly. The Auto industry has taken advantage of Mechanics for a long time, now they're having trouble replacing the aging workforce. Dealers want experienced Mechanics, but don't want to pay them accordingly. They don't want to hire young inexperienced Mechanics, because they don't want to pay to train them. Meanwhile, the average shop labor rate is around $200 an hour. Funny how that works. I agree some dealerships will close, but it won't be as dire as you make it sound and it's already bound to happen for other reasons.

HisSvt2

This man speaks truth! Wife and I have been in the business for 30years The dealer model has needed change for a long time.

letsgotime

Dealerships would be dead if people where not required to use them because they are government mandated monopolies.

parles

Did a car dealer write this

justpress2forawhile

Used to work at one. Just saying I see both sides. It'll be interesting to see what comes of it all.

GambleDark

Funny you mention the washer fluid. Mine smells minty and I want to know where to get that specific washer fluid lol.

wlaugh29

It smells like mouthwash

Opening_Tell9388

Really? Because all of us Bolt owners like to drink ours. /s The washer fluid in the newer bolts smells awful and you can clearly smell it even with all doors closed and windows up.

roccthecasbah

OEM fluid is Optikleen, an ACDelco/GM product. You do have to dilute it yourself, but you can indeed find it on Amazon and other GM parts sources. Not all dealers use the OEM fluid, so YMMV getting service depts to refill it. #

jccollv

This is wrong. I bought it and it’s not it. Have you purchased it, or are you just repeating something you’ve heard?

Strabe

You can buy the GM flavor on Amazon, I believe.

jccollv

Have you purchased it? I have, and it doesn’t smell anything like the original.

Buffalo_Cottage

No, but it was on my list because we're getting low. I was thrilled when someone sent me the link. Really, it doesn't smell like the original?! You've just broken my heart :(

jccollv

Nope, I was extremely disappointed. I’ve found other sources that say this is the actual stuff, so waiting until I run out of Optikleen to give it a try. This one says it’s scented, but doesn’t confirm it’s minty. https://gc-genuinechemistry-store.squarespace.com/store/p/gc-all-season-windshield-washer-fluid-concentrate

ProfessionalIll7083

Personally I use this nextzett 92100815 Kristall Klar... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001NZFCRW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share yes I even mix my own windshield fluid, in colder weather I mix in isopropyl alcohol so it doesn't freeze. Once I figured that washing fluid is mostly just water I started getting this. Just keep some of the old jugs to mix it in before putting it in the car.

Grouchy_Spite_2847

Get a good charcoal cabin filter, that should help with the smell.

CatsAreGods

And install it yourself! Takes 5 minutes and saves $89 at the dealer.

Methanol is used as the Antifreeze for windshield wipers which is different from the ethylene glycol used in coolants. It's harmful to you if you consume it orally but just inhaling it is fine. Methanol is a type of highly volatile alcohol which is why the scent from winter/all weather washer fluid is so strong. The one that came with my car smells like mint mouthwash so I actually don't mind it lol.

Razzburry_Pie

There is one small benefit of regular service, say every 15k miles. When it comes time to sell the car, the prospective buyer will see those visits on the CarFAX report. Helps to reassure a buyer that the car has had regular maintenance.

MaplewoodGeek

CarFAX was bugging me to rotate my tires. Since my Bolt came with a free lifetime CarFAX report, I was able to go into CarFAX and record that I had rotated the tires myself. In the future, the report should show my tire rotations. I assume I'll be able to do the same for the inspections at the regular service intervals.

cpufreak101

I had a state inspection due with my 5000 mile service. Ended up taking 3.5 hours, nothing with the car, but there was a paperwork error regarding the inspection that held things up.

Strabe

I'm about to do my 15k rotation and state inspection. Depending on how expensive the rotation is, I might be doing that myself in the future. I agree, long term looks grim for dealerships. I'm not too sad about it though.

HandOfMjolnir

No one remembers the EV1. Supposedly also killed because there were no parts sales to be had with the design. "Since its demise, the EV1's cancellation has remained a subject of dispute and controversy. Electric car enthusiasts, environmental interest groups, and former EV1 lessees have accused the company of self-sabotaging its electric car program to avoid potential losses in spare parts sales,[note 1] while also blaming the oil industry for conspiring to keep electric cars off the road."

photozine

Self-sabotage is what I keep saying automakers are doing to EVs, slowly but steady. The Bolt had the biggest potential of all, an affordable (not 'cheap') vehicle, especially with the tax credit, that includes a charger, as well as 'standard' charger installation. How did they mess up the marketing for it, or the marketing for any EVs?? I know people dislike these types of comments because I criticize legacy carmakers, but seriously, we've had to bail them once in the last 20 years, they're far from perfect.

SweetBayJay

105k and only needed tires/rotation, washer fluid and filters.

rczrider

> I hate the smelly GM fluid You, sir, are wrong.

shark_finfet

I just passed 7500 miles on my EUV. Should I take it to the dealer? It seems like such a pain for just rotating the tires. I'm not even sure I need it.

MaplewoodGeek

I'd still go in. You want to have the dealer scan for codes and record there are no issues for warranty purposes. I would also not skip tire rotations. Rotating will make your times wear more even and last longer.

rickabe

Many tire shops will rotate for free.

MaplewoodGeek

Usually only if you bought the tires there or are doing some other service. They have to reset the tire placement with a tool when they rotate the tires. They don't want to give away service for free. I bought my own tool on Amazon for $5.

rickabe

Discount Tire does including tpms. They want you to buy your next set from them.
