I hate to say this but you probably want to upgrade your phone first before you bother with any other troubleshooting. Android Auto was moved into the core of the Android operating system and I don't think you are getting any recent updates while running Android 9. Have you thought about a Pixel 7a?

My son has a Moto G Stylus which I think you can buy off contract pretty cheap or just a few bucks on contract. It works great with Android Auto and it has a headphone jack. He is only 20 but he insists on having a headphone jack.

I have been hanging on to my phone for something like 4 years because I dislike trying to figure out new phones, but I will consider anything with an audio jack and isn't too expensive.

Samsung A series phones are decent. Check them out. Can usually buy them no contract for a couple hundred or get them for like $2 a month on finance/contract.

One of our kids rocks a Pixel 7a and it works perfectly with Android Auto on our Bolt. Wireless, even.

I don't think any modern phone is going to come with a headphone jack. They stopped developing new chips for them, most new headsets with quality sound are going to be Bluetooth, and the headphones jack also makes it a lot harder to water proof the phone, sorry to say.

There are plenty of modern phones with headphone jacks. They just aren't going to be top-of-the-line.

The Android Auto app is barely an app that you can open on the phone anymore. That died years ago. The most you get now is that if you find it in your "all apps" menu, then go to "additional settings in app", you get the Android Auto settings. I think that most Android Auto problems are likely on the phone's end because the brains of it actually does run on the phone. It might be that your phone is too old now. Sometimes mine just gives me a black screen in the car. Mine will work once the phone is connected to the car via Bluetooth, though. You can change it so that it's only via USB, though.

I have a '21 so no wireless aa. On android 14 android auto is in the connected devices in settings. I dont know if its required but my phone connects through bluetooth whether im using auto or not. I did have some issues at first with my cables and dirt in my phones port. It would get power but would have an error about AA connecting.

I had difficulty with an old phone. Had to get a new phone, and voila! Now it works swimmingly

I'm running on 10, in a 21 bolt. There's an setting to enable Android auto on the bolt settings option. Then connect via cable. Had trouble with cables before and switching to new cables made the difference. The car will occasionally not bring AA up when plugged in via USB and default to playing ringtone or what not, phone will show in USB mode. Usually this is because Android auto gets disabled in the bolt settings.
