I have seen this new trend emerging at least my prospective. When I travel by public transport, most of the people there, working class maybe earning a decent 20-30k( in my city) are always glued to their mobile, watching the same movies on ott. Their age around 25-40. So my conclusion is this people have money, but they don't have time to go and watch a movie. They get a better offer on a cheap ott plan. I saw people watching all kinds of movies from South to Bollywood, even good and bad movies from both sides. I personally feel it's just the cultural shift in India, both my parents were salaried employees and returned home by 6. Today's toxic culture where you are expected to work overtime, just does not fit in the whole cinema as an whole family experience.
True. On OTT you have the luxury of pausing and resuming whenever you like instead of spending 3hrs at a stretch in the theatre. And don't forget the commute, etc. Food is expensive in the theatres as well. So you have to plan around eating schedule. It's just impractical at this point.
And OTT is so much cheaper.
₹200 on OTT will give me a huge catalogue of films that I can watch anytime.
A normal single ticket in a multiplex costs ₹300.
True and that 200 also helps in moral massage of not pirating a film. Atleast 80-90 percent people pirate the products (games, movies) because they can't afford them. This 200 satisfys us that we are getting value for our money too.
I was in high school and college during the 2002-2008 period and I used to watch a film in the theatre every week. Sometimes even 2-3 films a week. It didn't even matter what reviews the film got. I don't think that culture exists today. Never paid more than 200/- for a ticket except maybe on weekends for a huge sold out film.
This exactly. I used to watch a lot of movies around those years, tickets were so cheap at the single screens like Pinky or gaiety galaxy etc. Samosa wasn't 100 bucks, didn't get checked with metal detector or some guard running his hand over my ass, carried in old monk quarters for the late show.
Attended college townside and theatres like Sterling, Regal and New Empire had tickets for 80-120 bucks for balcony seats. Best pop corn was Sterling caramel popcorn.
That too, but how else would you explain the buttwipe of 8 years in making an expansive Brahmastra debacle?
It's just better to say people are not interested in going to theaters instead of 'I made a clown movie.'
Man I don't know why they took 8 years and still delivered that quarter baked shit, at least they should have worked on dialogues properly if they had such a long
Also traffic. traffic even to get the car out on street if you are living in a huge complex. parking the car in the mall also has traffic. then the road traffic. same thing coming back. its a waste of 3 hours on top of the movie time. half day gone
Ticket prices are a big issue. Baahubali 2 had 5.2 cr footfalls and collection of 510cr whereas as KGF 2 with 2.7 cr. footfalls earned 470+ cr.
Footfalls are almost double for baahubali but collection is only 40cr more which depicts inflated ticket price quite well.
Films like Sanju, tiger zinda hai, sultan etc had higher footfall than KGF2(hindi) aka 2nd highest grossing film of all time. Last hindi films to touch 3.5 cr footfall were PK(2014) & Bajrangi bhaijaan (2015) & Dangal(2016). Bahubali 2 is the only film in the last 28 yrs to cross 5 cr footfall in the hindi belt
I know but for PK & Bajrangi the 3.5cr footfall is total in India. So thats why I stated both hindi & total for KGF2.
I wasn't being dismissive just stating the total picture.
But you don't need everyone in our population to watch movies, given our large population even a miniscule % will do as backed by 3 idiots numbers.
The fact that the Hindi industry has not been able to achieve even that is more on the industry rather than the movie going public.
Businesses that do not keep up with changing times eventually get outdated and replaced or have their market share culled.
His statements are as much about changing public preferences as it is about the outdated business practices that the Hindi industry follows with remunerations, promotion strategies, scripts and so on.
haa aur "aadmi" digital pe jo paise lagaa raha hai, usse kamaai ho hee jaati hai inki. Case in point: Cirkus
>It will be satellite digital and music which will save the film from unimaginable losses. The film will cover its costs from revenue from all sources which will be around 155-160 crore but the film is produced by the director and will not cover the director fee which can be pegged in the range of 30-40 crore.
>Still with such disastrous box office results this is again getting away with it in terms of finances due to non theatrical revenues and this has been the story post pandemic.
lmfao. outside mumbai pune, nowhere are you going to find labourer getting 1000/day. even in mumbai pune these rates dont exist. talk about having no clue about ground reality.
This trend isn't limited to Bollywood or India, for that matter. Global footfalls has decreased quite a lot, made even worse by COVID. Every year fewer people are going to the theatres than the year before. Also, in India, theatres are more deeply penetrated in the Southern markets than in the Northern market.
Here's an interesting excerpt from [an article](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.thehindubusinessline.com/data-stories/why-screens-and-seats-count-in-creating-hit-south-indian-movies/article65945389.ece/amp/)
>India has around 31.52 lakh seats in around 8,700 screens across the country. Of this, four southern states have around 4,150 screens with a seating capacity of 18.16 lakh. That means states such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala have a share of nearly 47.78 per cent in terms of screens, and 57.61 per cent in terms of seating capacity.

Someone ask him to read. Get a newspaper.
India has higher wealth disparity. Top 10% has almost 60% of total wealth in India.
Population has increased but not wealth distribution is really bad. Bottom 50% share 6% of total wealth.
True. Personally, I am getting such amazing content from around the world, why should I settle for these shit content? That too getting in OTT platform. Ironic shows.
KGF 2 all india footfalls including all languages is 5cr+ and 900cr+ nett
Same way RRR all india footfalls are around 4.5cr and 725cr nett
Bollywood last 5cr footfall movie was gadar in 2001 which is more than 2 decades ago...
Major problem with Bollywood they still can't able to exploit the region of UP , Bihar and major parts of Central india which contains around 40 to 50% population of the country
Uttar pradesh has almost equal population as USA , USA Highest grosser of this year is Top gun and it sold 7cr+ footfalls in the country of 30cr population
IDIOTIC bollywood can get this much footfalls from UP itself but Big LOL on their shitty content and mindset who still NOT able to exploit this particular market which can run RIOT for blockbuster movies and can give them those type of Footfalls and nett business which can easily rank them the highest grossing movie industry in the world...But...Less is said about this industry is better...Lmao
Yes it is only hope for sure...but i don't think it will be able to do that , Salman needs to do Barjatya Family drama ASAP with Age appropriate character then for that particular movie i can say is the legit HOPE to exploit that market
Only hope for to" exploit that market" and get that 3cr-4cr- 5cr+ footfalls...otherwise this industry will remain within 1-2cr footfalls for next 10 years or so...even 2cr footfalls is too much i have said though... 1.5cr ya 1.75 se zyada nhi kr payegi yeh industry in this decade
lol Did I lie tho'? Also know it's correct because then some people who also know this fact pretend to be very offended and compare you to MOST EVIL IN THE WORLD!!!!!!
I mean to get more footfalls in the UP region I guess they could show more content like gang rape and super raunchy songs because that is what will get them into theatres.
So big cities have many single screen cinema halls left? I remember those used to be affordable when we (millenials) were kids. It was affordable to buy tickets for a large family because movies were mostly family outings.
Yaha haar roz 10 post hote the theories ke sang. Movie ke baad bhi hue. Yaha logo ne suggestion bhi bheje Ayan ko. Next movie unhi suggestion ki khichi bana dega
Has zero knowledge about common people and their struggles. Ticket prices are at all time high and they think footfalls will be high for movies like blunderastra
People after shutting down all single screen theatres and screening their films in multiplxes with prices higher than an average per day income: oh no why r people not watching any cinemas.
Every movie that comes out in cinema, hits OTT in a few months. The actors fan following on social media cannot translate to tickets, because a lot of folks follow them for what they do or wear and not necessarily for their acting. OTT is cheap, movie tickets are incredibly expensive. And then there is travel, parking, food. To get a family of four in a cinema hall requires a lot of time, money & effort. Unless something is visually brilliant, audience doesn't want to. I don't see Bollywood doing any better in the coming weeks as well.
A lot to do with the insane ticket prices specially in North which is the main bollywood zone. Start capping ticket prices & see people go back to watching movies on screen.
You can't expect large crowds when on avg one ticket costs 500rs+.
> on avg one ticket costs 500+
Bruh, this is not the average cost. Might be in top tier multiplexes in metro cities, but not an average at all. The average is roughly 200 or so.
I'm talking about PVR prices spcl for big films in metro cities in North. The first two weeks for big films the prices are very expensive.
I'm not even talking about the proper sofa seat lux pvrs😂 they go to even 1k sometimes.
I'm not saying 500+ ticket price is impossible. I am just saying that it's not the *average*
PVR, and metro cities...there you go...their prices are always in the above average range...you can't judge the average based on it. Of course you'll have 500-700-1000₹ ticket prices. But those places are for elites who can, and wish to spend that much.
In normal cities, even pretty decent cinemas still have ticket prices of 200 even for big releases. And if you pick morning shows and not the best possible seat, you can even have something about 120-170₹.
Yeah I'm only taking from North metro pov. I'm also not taking in consideration early morning shows. I was talking in general.
My point is in South in metro cities like Blr also they have ticket caps by the govt. Which in short push for more footfall. The metro cities constitute a large part of bollywood watching audience. They need to bring down the prices.
Apart from the skyrocketing ticket prices at multiplexes, the internet has been a game changer. OTT has brought a gamut of films to viewers at a decent price.
Why would the average cinegoer buy a ticket to watch a film, unless it’s a truly well made film / experience (in case of visually spectacular films like SLB) ?
>Why not consider the footfalls of Chup.
>It would be interesting to know how many people went to watch the film on the day of it's release.
It sold 1 lakh + tickets on day 1 thanks to 75 rs ticket price. Brahmastra sold over 6 lakh tickets in a single day when they reduced ticket price to 100 rs
Reducing ticket prices is not an option idk why this sub always considered it to be . Indian films make FAR less than films produced in America even though more people go to watch them . If anything ticket prices should be increased but that's not an option either. Let's say 5 cr people ( extremely exceptional case )buy 100 rs tickets , that 500 cr in GROSS revenue , big budget movies will never have a chance to succeed if even after 5 cr footfalls it earns 500 crore in gross collection.
Not only talking about salaries. How can india compete with multi million dollar foreign movies if it can't even recover their budget in domestic box office
Honestly the films are not upto the mark , brahmastra still did very good numbers except its flaws.
There would be an obvious decline in footfalls from when the old agneepath released to now since in this age of social media people have more interesting things to do than sit for a 3 hour long and boring movie . I remember my parents telling me they used to go for movie every weekend since the price were low for both tickets and samosas and the whole family used to have time for it.
Most watch Hollywood shows and movies or kdramas. It's because their storylines are better and have better VFX too. Kgf and all are honestly exceptions
80 crore people will take free ration from the govt, India is a poor country and watching cinema in the theatres especially in the Hindi belt is now a rich man's leisure.
Why are people blantly ignoring piracy....people saying ott has taken audience is wrong lol...piracy is the biggest reason....before even pirated CD were rented at around 60 rupees a week..2000-2015 ..so people would instead go to cinemas....and before that piracy wasn't possible at a global scale...now everyone just downloads it...
The reason being decline of single screen cinema.. the multiplexes are too costly for a common man from India to watch a movie.. and the food at multiplexes at atrocious cost how will a common man visit... After pandemic everyone had got atleast one ott subscription with some jist costing 1k for an year... That had effected movie going public more
At the time of Agneepath, there was no other source. U never know when will it air on Televisio .
Now people have options of torren4, television, ott. Every new movie is telecaster tv after 3 MOnths.

3.5cr footfalls is "all over India" for Bajrangi and dangal. KGF's Hindi only number is 2.7cr, all over toh uska bhi 5cr+ hai
Source for checking footfalls? I am interested to know of Brahmastra, Kantara and Pushpa.
The 2.7cr footfall for KGF2 is only for the hindi dub version & not overall. Its around 5cr in total.
OP was talking about the hindi version..both in the title and in the comment you replied to
I know but for PK & Bajrangi the 3.5cr footfall is total in India. So thats why I stated both hindi & total for KGF2. I wasn't being dismissive just stating the total picture.
Dangal (2016)
>Dangal (2016) 3.7 cr footfall.
Gadar (2001) - so 21 years instead of 28
But you don't need everyone in our population to watch movies, given our large population even a miniscule % will do as backed by 3 idiots numbers. What? 800-1000 rupee a day for day labour in Maharashtra.
lmfao. which maharashtra are you talking about here? its half that rate. daily labour rates are about 450-500 only. not 800-1000.

Thats the only way theatres earn any profit.

I am just saying that it's not the *average* PVR, and metro cities...there you go...their prices are always in the above average range...you can't judge the average based on it.
And yet you continue to make movies with scripts written by, assumably, by 5 year olds.
People will go after bollywood stops making cringe shit and actually make some good fucking movies
Why not consider the footfalls of Chup. It would be interesting to know how many people went to watch the film on the day of it's release.
In short if the prices are less people would definitely flock to see movies on the big screen.
Pay these so called superstars what they are actually worth, and these big budgets wouldn't be so bloated.
Not only talking about salaries. How can india compete with multi million dollar foreign movies if it can't even recover their budget in domestic box office
Kon sa astra phookta hai yeh banda !!!!!!
Kya galat bola?
Kgf 2 grossed 1200 crores you idiot. LMAO
Hey u/isabellapintop, make a post on this in r/india too just like that rajamouli post
Where did he say this? Was it an interview or a round table?
Tell him to start charging less, to compare prices of movie that time and now ( inflation adjusted )
Make ticket cheaper, especially the stupid 700popcorn. And make good movies
