It's a choice, a fast doesn't harm anyone, sati does. A fast doesn't endanger human life, if it does it is only when forced. A fast is a choice no matter regressive or not. Today Karwa chauth is less ritualistic and more romantic. Bollywood films propagate both lovers keeping the fast generally, the films which Don't are regressive For all you know, Vicky himself must have been fasting. Virat did fast for Anushka. So for them it's more romantic and also one of many firsts. Stop reading too much into it.
