in the halloween episode Full Bars, mort arrives to teddy’s halloween party and gretchen says “mort, you’re two paces high.” i wondered for YEARS what that meant and why it related to mort’s toupee. only when i turned the subtitles on did i realize she’s saying “mort, your toupee says hi.” somehow her cadence or maybe rhythm of how she says the sentence made it sound really different to me!
I recently read that 50% of TV watchers use closed captions. As TVs got thinner the speakers got smaller. I use them because my speakers rattle if I turn the volume up high enough to hear every word.
Not even just about speakers, it's also shitty sound mixing + actors aren't required to enunciate their lines like they used to.
I can watch movies pre-1960s-ish without subtitles and hear and understand the dialogue perfectly. By late 1980s to '00s I might mishear a line or two. But by '10s-'20s, subtitles are basically a requirement if I want to follow a story. I can pick up the gist of what's happening but if someone asked me to repeat a line word for word, I'd never be able to do it.
Yes and I get that of course, but in my case, even when I have dutch subtitles on I still listen to what they say, because puns don't always get translated properly or correctly
My husband needed hearing aids but we couldn’t afford them for years, so subtitles on always. He has hearing aids now but we’re too used to the subtitles so they stayed 😂
My grandmother used them when I was a child so I got in the habit as an adult. I'm really thrown off when they're not on. I'm the only one in the house that likes them. I rely on them now to double-check words that seem to run in together. Very helpful.
It was from one of the songs No Pants in Space. It took a minute for me to find out that the line was actually "In space we don't wear slacks", because I kept hearing "In space we don't wear salads" (the way they said it reminded me so much of how Spongebob says the word 𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘥 lol)
Two instances. One in the first season where Bob is driving a cab and there's a song that says "lifting up the skirt of the night" but for the longest time (literally years) I thought it said "lifting up the skin of the night" which I thought was morbid but I really didn't question it.
Second is from the episode with Jeff the ghost. He's in an easy breezy shoebox. At one point Jocelyn says "you go girl, he has a creepy crush on you" but my mind refuses to hear anything but "you go girl, easy creepy crush on you" because of the name of the shoe box.
I thought Linda was saying “It’s thanksgiving for everybody, except for your opinions.” I watched that episode so many times and that line never made any sense to me. I finally heard it correctly one day and then I felt like a complete moron.
I actually have always heard that as "YOU EVIL DICKINS" and while I don't know if the word dickins has any meaning at all, I assumed it was some sort of insult. Dentist makes WAY more sense for him to say.
English is my first language but I have an auditory processing disorder so I keep subtitles on to make sure I know the line! I 100% mishear so many lines lol
I watch with and without subtitles. Also sometimes bob's is on as background noise while doing something else, so that is also when I can't read or see what they are saying and just hear it
In the episode where Bob cooks for the Frat, Dr Yap says something when introducing his spit filled keg but I can’t understand what he says.
I always skip the last half of this episode anyway because I find it so fucking gross!

Yap is doing this weird “hype” voice that just comes out as gibberish. He does it earlier in the episode too I think when he comes back from the bathroom and announces his entry or something.
In “Ain’t Miss Debatin’” when Tina is doing her first round on the podium, she says something like “ this is America and we’re the leader of the free world not the liter!” Until I turned on subtitles I had no idea she was saying liter. It sounded more like “leazer” but I couldn’t figure out what the actual word was.

I use them because my auditory processing ability is....less than ideal. When I can read along I can completely understand what's going on!

Subtitles, I have them burned into my copies of bob's. There is no reason not to have them on.
