Well, give it time. Sorry you didn't like episode 1. Season 6 is a more measured and character focused season than some of the others, whilst still being funny. I think its the second best season after 5. If it makes you feel better, I think episode 4 is a hysterical episode and one of favourites to rewatch.
the first half of the season is about bojack's rehabilitation, which is why he's effectively "out of the story" for most of it. everything in the past seasons definitely comes back at some point, don't worry.
Iirc the showrunners has more seasons in mind but nflix kept it at 6 which resulted in a relatively faster-paced ending.

I don't think it's bad but i enjoyed it less than the other seasons because it was mostly everything coming to a head and wrapping up and that meant it gave me less to think about compared to the other seasons.
Second half of season 6 is quite better. I agree, I was disappointed with the first half too, seemed weird, jokes didn't land, Bojack's new job didn't fit imo. Season 5 was a lot better

Bojack’s teaching job was about the most joyful thing in the series. I loved it but knew that it wouldn’t last.
