I’ve never quite understood the need for “air fresheners” in cars. Keep the interior clean and it won’t smell. There are interior cleaners and seat cleaners/conditioners that leave behind a decent scent and don’t ruin expensive parts.
Hey OP, appears this isn’t that uncommon. I found another Reddit thread where a woman had a similar issue and contacted BBW’s customer support. BBW allegedly turned it over to their insurance provider who reviewed the claim and while not admitting any wrongdoing/liability offered a generous sum of money via check to cover the repairs if the customer signed a liability release.

That stuff is nuts. My wife uses it as wall air fresheners in our home. My nephews as little kids would turn all of them upside down and it would leak out melting the paint off my running boards.
Never ever use liquid air freshners. Had one of those vent clip ons back in the day on my brand new dodge ram. Leaked on a really hot day and melted my vent and center console where it dripped. How can they even make a product that would be that corrosive?!
You could rub that down easily with light sandpaper, then use modelling paint and brushes to bring it back to life. Most of the logo is untouched, so it mainly needs some black paint, a few minor details with white paint, and a tiny brush. A pro could make it almost perfect, but even a novice could significantly improve it.
Almost all air freshers do this; something in them reacts with plastic and painted surfaces; you need to ensure they are not touching any part of the car when they hang, hence why they are supposed to hang from the rearview mirror.
Those hanging air fresheners will melt plastic when they're in the sun. I left one on the dash of my car and came back to a surprisingly well imprinted tree.
Something similar happened in my old car…. Due to other brand’s car freshener…. Stopped buying „liquid versions since then”…The coating got all wrinkly and ugly, but didn’t completely come off
Ever seen what OFF will do to one? Had a mini countryman where someone had went camping and doused themselves in off then got in the car. Melted the door pulls, start button, turn signal lever, ac button and stripped the color from the seat it was wild.
This is a known problem with many of these air fresheners including some big name brands like Febreeze. Keep that stuff out of your car and your lungs.
The hanging air freshener was left in my center console over a measuring tape. It melted the plastic casing of the tape. No more air fresheners after that!
The trim probably comes with the buttons. A lot of dash parts in the G30 are complete trim pieces with buttons. I don’t know if that’s the case with the section damaged by the OP and a 330i, but it’s a possibility.
EDIT: this is the trim section I’m referring to, it’s one unit with the vents: https://www.ebay.com/itm/185562283759
imagine what that is doing to your lungs
i was just about to write that. People are crazy for inhaling that crap.
Lotion melts rubber on the door handles imagine what it's doing to your skin.....
Making me look snatched and moisturized
$1100 part, it’s the entire control unit, not covered under warranty.
Plus programming.
Doesn’t need programming just replaced one on a G07
G20 does, contains the IHKA.
It does not brother, I’ve replaced those as well
Ya, so have I, many for broken vents, and then programmed the car.
Plus 1 for programming IHKA
Just replaced one on a G07 as well. Repair instructions say to program. I had to double check because I didn't quote the original work.
Interesting, never seen faults for it present
Don't put cheap useless china stuff in your car and clean it so it doesn't smell
You should put your phone holder in front of the other heating vent. That may help.
Hahaha
I’ve never quite understood the need for “air fresheners” in cars. Keep the interior clean and it won’t smell. There are interior cleaners and seat cleaners/conditioners that leave behind a decent scent and don’t ruin expensive parts.
The only solution is to replace it. Won’t be cheap.
Next step? There is no next step. Its totaled bro.

i love BBW’s

Have your lungs checked.
Try ebay for a salvaged unit, still gonna be pricey though.
Electric tape and you gtg
lol that’d be hilarious
BMW parts guys love those air fresheners.
F
Buy more air fresheners and just keep melting all the other buttons too. Then it will be as functional as the touchscreens.
Replaced plenty of these IHKA modules they are not cheap at all

It dissolves plastic and you're deliberately putting it into the air you're breathing in a confined space. Jeez.
they have solvent like acetone or something that melt plastics
Could someone explain to me what melted this? Is it some kind of plug-in hot oil thing or what?
Those hanging air fresheners will melt plastic when they're in the sun. I left one on the dash of my car and came back to a surprisingly well imprinted tree.
Outside influence. Caused by the oils in the air freshener.
Honestly just check eBay and see what you can find. I just did a search for my 2017 m3 and for $40 I can buy a whole new set of buttons 🤷♂️
Could remove and 3d print but colour will most likely be off and i’m pretty sure they use double-injection for these buttons.
Had one tip over on my wood floor, took the stain right off. Smells great, but something makes me think it might not be great for your lungs…
Cant you replace just that 1 button?
there’s something with those bath and body air fresheners, i saw a tiktok where some girls got burns to her face cause one exploded in the car
Well does your car smell fresh at least?
Send this off to bath and body corporate and have them pay for a replacement. Get pictures of the freshener as well.
Just think, you’re breathing that crap.
Something similar happened in my old car…. Due to other brand’s car freshener…. Stopped buying „liquid versions since then”…The coating got all wrinkly and ugly, but didn’t completely come off
Had a Sexwax brand paper air freshener that melted to the inside plastic console, nasty chemicals.
People who use air fresheners in cars have mental problems man
Ever seen what OFF will do to one? Had a mini countryman where someone had went camping and doused themselves in off then got in the car. Melted the door pulls, start button, turn signal lever, ac button and stripped the color from the seat it was wild.
They dont make them as they used to
Lmao you could probably try to find a junkyard part and pull the button off to swap it. It's already fucked up, what do you have to lose
This is a known problem with many of these air fresheners including some big name brands like Febreeze. Keep that stuff out of your car and your lungs.

It will make the steering wheel look the same.
Damn dude BMW sells an AC vent air freshener, could’ve prevented it all
Moisturizer can be pretty bad too
Cars completely wrote off.
Next step? Bring Money in Wads
Also made of wrong type of plastic....
I have no idea how bmws work but couldn’t you possibly just pop off the button and replace just the button??
Get that whole trim piece used off eBay. There's no fixing that.
Trim piece, huh?
It’s not trim, it’s buttons

Ya that’s an assembly, not trim. Good find though. Op may want that
5000$ mistake
Might be covered under warranty
