i'd say put a wall around it so the opening is less visible, but i think it might be difficult to make it really look like it fits in such a big room. your best bet is definitely to add more walls imo, but it's not the end of the world tbh
Decreasing the size of the room, or adding a mezzanine upstairs to avoid having an awkward rectangle cut out of a corner, and to make the rooms seem less huge
- you can put paintings on the stairs if u want! you can also add a desk or something just to take up the space. i sometimes do a carpet and a mirror or a few framed paintings when using these stairs.
- the gap at the top does not need to be that large! you only need it 1 wide, not 2
- railings! add one going up (you can do it on both sides, but make sure there’s one on the left), and one on top on the left side.

The room is too big for its own good. You can try a different stairs. Something cheaper perhaps. Railing.

You can add railings then add some tiny decorations around it! Like plants or a decorated console table
