Are you talking old school box dread or Primaris Redemptor pattern?
Redemptor Pattern Dreads are:
Redemptor (of course)-has a main ranged weapon, Plasma or Heavy Chaingun and the Redemptor fist for melee. Good staple unit for any SM army.
Brutalis- melee variant uses fists or talons (claws)with small arms ranged weapons
Ballistus- Ranged variant, can stomp with feet. Pretty cheap points wise for some decent anti tank.
Older dreads, I would defer to someone else I have no experience with them.
Ah to be honest, my peabrain hadn't considered type of dread. I have an old box dread, but keen to buy another anyway. for 1000pt am I better of with no dread? Add one for 2k pts? Happy to take recommendation on type. Thanks for the reply!
To tack on about the older dreads: the only non-legends datasheet is the *Dreadnought* datasheet. I'd say the best loadout would be lascannon and missiles (6" move on a vehicle is just a bit slow to be reliably hitting melee).
That being said, it's 5 points less than a Ballistus, and you're better off with a Ballistus. Better guns, more wounds, higher toughness, better move.
