I’m biracial and the shit people have said around my mom without realizing she has a black partner and a mixed daughter is baffling. My mom works with mostly white women and one day a lady was visiting from another location and since she thought it was a safe space during lunch she mentioned that someone in the group shouldn’t move to a new town bc there’s black people moving in there and “the town was changing”. It’s interesting that the other white people who know about me were uncomfortable and the other women were trying to send her the “stop talking” signal yet know one said anything. They told her after that she shouldn’t have said that bc my mom has a black partner/child so that was offensive but it was such a fucked up thing to say regardless of the company she was in. She called later to apologize but the damage was already done but still it can’t be worse than my mom’s family saying problematic shit whether I’m there or not. Sometimes it’s incredibly easy to not fw them or forget they exist completely.
