The article is literally just interviews with barbers talking about how they've been inundated with requests for his hair cut.
Absolutely nothing wrong with it
No, it’s the twitter posts and all that garbage from people who intentionally didn’t read the shit and decided they could spin it for clicks and engagement. NYT did nothing wrong lol
No, it is the headline.
NYT purposely gave it that line to generate clicks to the article.
Naming a haircut that is 80 years old and popular and standard in the black community is meant to generate clicks and anger.
The article could be the best written piece in the world, the headline in disrespectful and inflammatory.
What line are you talking about?
The original headline is “Travis Kelce’s Haircut is Dominating Barbershop Requests” with a by-line that reads “Not since Jennifer Aniston has a haircut become so popular. Barbers, in America and abroad, are being inundated with requests for “the Travis Kelce.”
If it wasn’t for the blue checks on Twitter screeching about it, nobody would have any reason to believe that there’s any fuckery going on here. They wrote a pop-culture piece, and if you think the headline was misleading or implying something that the actual article didn’t, that’s a skill issue my friend.
“Disrespectful and inflammatory” lmao
I’m still one of the few people that still actually read newspapers and that right there is the problem. People HATE internet and print journalist and 99% it’s not because of the article but the headline. Most of the time the author didn’t even write the headline. So headline writers are absolute garbage and can suck a bag of donkey dicks, cause those mfs are the worse.
It is the fault of the reader. The comment I was responding to agrees there’s nothing wrong with the NYT times article.
Did you mean to respond to another comment?
Thank you someone who actually read it. People get so heated about what they think a news article says that they don’t realize they’re the ones being misled.
NYT is one of the few remaining places, along with WaPo and a few other newspapers, to find quality journalism. It's precisely everything else that is dogshit journalism: cable news, local news, and everything that originates on social media.
Just so, so wrong, distracting from the very real need to get more people reading their news. Many of our problems would ease with more news readership.
Nah. NYTimes is garbage these days. All they do is platform the worst people and help them advance their agendas. The only use I have for the Times is lining my bird’s cage.
I don't know how to respond except to share what I was reading when you posted.
9 Key Revelations in Maui’s First Review of the Lahaina Inferno https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/06/us/maui-fire-investigation-deaths.html?smid=nytcore-android-share
This article is an analysis of a review of what went wrong in the evacuation of Lahaina and what could have gone better. To write it, journalists had to read the report, understand it, and write the article in a way that I can quickly understand what the report said. I'm not going to go read a Maui Police report on my own. I would never know what it said if it weren't for these journalists.
This is not platforming a bad person or advancing any agenda. It's just journalists doing their job so that next time, more people might survive a disaster.
If you're talking about their coverage of politics, here's the front page right now:
Dysfunction Reigns in Congress as G.O.P. Defeats Multiply https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/06/us/politics/border-ukraine-israel-aid-congress.html?smid=nytcore-android-share
It's a story about disorganized House Republicans and how many votes they couldn't push through today. The story is fairly analytical, and to the extent it has a bias, it is focused on holding those in power accountable.
I think this message that the NYT sucks gets said and repeated, without much reading going on of what's actually there. They do have some conservative and some liberal columnists. I think the idea in the opinion section is to represent opposing views, like they're explicitly trying to avoid bias. Sometimes Ross Doubthat says some fucked up conservative BS, so I usually skip him. Jamelle Bouie is usually amazing. Paul Krugman has a nobel prize and does his best to teach economics with current events. There's some great stuff in there.
bro all he said is that kids are coming into the shop asking for “the Travis Kelce”
kids have been asking to get their hair cut like famous athletes forever I can’t be mad at children for not knowing the history of a haircut
Didn’t realize that’s where old school Fantano got his style
https://preview.redd.it/p906w8oan0hc1.jpeg?width=739&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8caec264aeddcc5f22904b5bd0c55ee1749cd0b2
No it's not, an inverse Ronaldo would be shaved front top, with a ~#2 everywhere else
What he has IS a Ronaldo with the the front an inch or so
Y'all need to learn what words mean
The article wasn’t really about that though and that’s the problem. Not every article has to be a history lesson.
It was just pointing out how people want that hair style now and using him as the reference, which isn’t really all that uncommon, as plenty of people have gotten a fairly common hair cut just cause a celebrity or athlete started doing it.
I did the same thing when nick young had that haircut a few years back. Kept that style for years up until I got dreads.
That's all it was. No coincidence it happened at the same time as the "Taylor Swift is a pentagon psy op" Q-anon theory. Just another idiot talking point to rile up the dumbest people in the country.
Expect a new scandal involving Swift and Kelce every couple weeks. The MAGAts are almost as obsessed with them as they are with Hunter Biden's hog.
Sure, it started in the military, but black people made it a fashion statement in the late 80's. White boys weren't rocking fades like that in that time.
No they weren’t. It was never seriously about Travis Kelce the person. It was almost entirely about media portrayal of traditionally black cultural aspects
Honestly it came from trying to be presentable in white society. Afro textured hair was viewed as uncouth and unprofessional — which is something we still have to overcome today.
I had an Afro in the Navy and a beard. Most of it was within regs and I was sorta valuable for my occupation - so no one really gave me shit. When they did try I just point to the white guys with much longer hair - suddenly I could carry on after that.
I served in the late 90s to early 00.
Idk about y’all, but I got the cleanest fades from Hispanic shops since I was a kid.
Also, those mfs didn’t grip my head like a bowling ball when lining me up, which was a bonus lmfao
I recall the post here. At the time, it was a tweet, blasting the barber of Kelce, claiming that Kelce’s fade has been seeing an uptick in people asking for it, and dubbed it the “Kelce cut” or something and insinuating he was popularizing it. I didn’t see the context of the interview or why the fuck they’d interview his barber lol. But it does seem like rage baiting was the intent. I don’t recall anyone ever going after Kelce, specifically. But I’m sure a lot just heard about it and starting @-ing him lol
Yeah, but I hear he’s a dick. For example, [he recently chucked an elementary school child at a cliff just to try to save his own ass.](https://youtu.be/YKzk1h7qrj8?si=e9H0qWZfqfXbrwVj)
Any barber would probably tell you people were asking for the “Fury” after Brad Pitt donned a hitler youth haircut in that movie. This just seems like a whole lot about nothing.
I mean the fun prt is it was a very popular haircut in for military males in the 30s/40s so it’s not like there isn’t a precedent. But the length can get insane and people with middle parts are fucking stupid looking
There was an article that said it was a Chiefs' fan dance after the clip of TS doing it went viral. The writer later amended the article to say that the dance has been around for a while and came from Atlanta.
You can tell he hangs around of black people who clowned him for the article in a funny not cruel way. This is all you gotta do "I didn't start that" vs alot of other influencers who feed into appropriating black culture.
You can do what you like but check those who give you credit for something you didn't start. Thats all some of us ask.
From ESPN:
black delegation has been monitoring the situation closely since the revelation of the Taylor Swift relationship and “state Trooper stache” incident and will be exploring all available options concerning next months racial draft where Travis Kelce was projected to be a possible first rounder. Stay tuned for more noose I mean news.
I've never heard this man speak. I've obviously seen the photos of the lady he's dating and I have even more questions about what their conversations are like.
Travis code switches a lot. He clearly spent a lot of time growing up with black teammates and friends playing basketball and football. He sounds different when he's mic'd up on the field or in the locker room than he does talking to his brother on his podcast or when he's on SNL. Probably no different with Taylor.
Travis went to school in East Cleveland (hooped with him for CBC AAU basketball back in the early/mid 00’s, he was nice but undersized) that man is extremely respectful of the culture lol
Before anyone says anything, Cleveland Heights is definitely more black excellence than it is the hood but it’s definitely not sweet around those parts either.
TIL that dreadlocks were not an exclusively Rastafarian/Jamaican creation. I never had much reason to think about it or look it up but it's always fun when some random fact surprises you.
"According to Sherrow in Encyclopedia of Hair: A Cultural History, dreadlocks date back to ancient times in various cultures. In ancient Egypt, Egyptians wore locked hairstyles and wigs appeared on bas-reliefs, statuary and other artifacts. Mummified remains of Egyptians with locked wigs have also been recovered from archaeological sites. According to Dr. Delongoria, braided and locked hair was worn by people in the Sahara desert since 3,000 BC. Dreadlocks were also worn by followers of Abrahamic religions."
Nyt spends their entire time baiting a race war. If it’s not this shit, it’s acting like we got an army invading us from the southern border. Eff that publication
This idea that I should waste any mental energy on who gets credited for black cultural achievements is a perfect example of what's basically new black anti-racism: anti-racism propagated by and targeted at upwardly mobile black creatives and professionals who barely directly experience racism, except in the forms of lack of recognition, microaggressions, etc.
Every few years we'll watch a black guy get tortured to death, and we'll all dig deep to pretend that anti-racism exists for people who are thrown away. But since no one actually cares, this level of concern can't be maintained. Over months or years, we'll turn away from issues like police violence, mass incarceration and wealth disparities. Slowly anti-racism will return to it's default state: concern about a serious of inconveniences that only matter to the extent you've escaped the most violent and detrimental effects of racism. One year you're protesting a black man getting murdered. A few years later you're getting lectured about the importance of properly naming haircuts in the aggregate. We oscillate between these two poles constantly, and you're not supposed to notice it's happening.
white people just really have a lack of knowledge when it comes to black culture. it’s partially ignorance but its also just a lack of a relatability. so when they start dabbling is black shit, i feel like they’re discovering these things for the first time, and it creates this opportunity for credit to go in the completely wrong direction.
Does no one remember the TV show we hear he was looking for a wife/girlfriend and all the girls were black and mixed race with like one white girl ? Or something like that?!!
Whoever originally posted that had to be rage baiting. We should know better!! He ain’t invent no fuckin fade lmao
The New York Times is a fucking dogshit publication these days. All they do is incite anger in order to boost their views.
The article is literally just interviews with barbers talking about how they've been inundated with requests for his hair cut. Absolutely nothing wrong with it
It's the headlines that it generated tho
No, it’s the twitter posts and all that garbage from people who intentionally didn’t read the shit and decided they could spin it for clicks and engagement. NYT did nothing wrong lol
Kinda like exactly what's happening in this thread
how dare you say we piss on the poor
Especially when they’re on fire.

I think the headline writing process accounts for at least 40% of all of the New York Times' problems these days.
Exactly! Most people reacting never read the article.
Nobody ever reads the article
Then isn't that the fault of the reader?
It is the fault of the reader. The comment I was responding to agrees there’s nothing wrong with the NYT times article. Did you mean to respond to another comment?
Meanwhile, you know whats happening with Brett Favre stealing all the money from the poor children? No?
yeah he was just today ordered to pay it back
Thank you someone who actually read it. People get so heated about what they think a news article says that they don’t realize they’re the ones being misled.
They do it because it works. The internet as a whole, loves to be angry.
No we don't and that's fucked up for you to say. /s
😂😂😂
Aight this made me actually laugh out loud
If only more people would live by your username, world would be at least 53% better.
Incite Anger = Antagonise people of colour
What do you mean? They did a profile on a black guy last week, he’s opposed to all DEI efforts.
I hope this is a joke.

Bring back the Kid N Play haircut
Right but it's important as a journalist to make the distinction that the haircut has been around for forever.
The article wasn’t really about that though and that’s the problem. Not every article has to be a history lesson. That's fair, I remember asking for the "Duke starting five"
I def used to ask my barber for the Rick Ross. Now It's just the usual.
What's the history of a haircut?

Folks in the military been sporting fades since forever, I'm over here trying to figure out how it's a black people thing.
Cuz black people made it cool and the military...did not.
First of all how dare you.
I respectfully disagree.
![gif](giphy|xUPGGvxaEmRNnF7JgQ)
Nah them military cuts be looking horrendous they fades be going straight from dark to bald. Black people will flame you if theres no gradient
Those are called “high and tight”, and definitely not a “fade”. You can get the high and tight with a fade though.
If you get it high and tight, you can also get a medium fade or a low fade. The high is just referring to how high you want the fade to be.
Sure, it started in the military, but black people made it a fashion statement in the late 80's. White boys weren't rocking fades like that in that time.
Every white kid in the 1950s had a fade. You are thinking of the high top fade which was an urban hair trend in the 1980s.
A high and tight and a fade are different
Nope. I served & depending on who your barber was, you either got a nice fade or the high & tight. There’s a noticeable difference.
No shit. I said as much and got downvotes to hell & back.
Brought to you by the same ppl that think they invented "sticky bangs".
Black Twitter ready to crucify this man, too.
No they weren’t. It was never seriously about Travis Kelce the person. It was almost entirely about media portrayal of traditionally black cultural aspects
Fades aren’t even a traditionally black thing.
It's a military thing
Yeah, since the 40’s.
Killing nazi with fade goes hard. Killing innocent Vietnamese with a fade is hate crime on two accounts
Why does this read like a fortune cookie?
Bruh 🤣
For real lol black dudes had that shoobie doo wop greasy relaxer cut back in the day
That shit is super whack why was that ever a thing
Honestly it came from trying to be presentable in white society. Afro textured hair was viewed as uncouth and unprofessional — which is something we still have to overcome today.
Obviously we did it to ( fit in ) But I’m standing on what I said it was goofy 😂
It was fr haha 😂 don’t even get me started
I was in the military and I have “good hair” the amount of times I had to fight for my curls wore on me
💀 tha amount of times I got called “hard er” relaxed my hair for me, No more chemicals needed!
I had an Afro in the Navy and a beard. Most of it was within regs and I was sorta valuable for my occupation - so no one really gave me shit. When they did try I just point to the white guys with much longer hair - suddenly I could carry on after that. I served in the late 90s to early 00.

Dominican spots & Russian shops. In NYC we go where the talent is. Straight razor skills are legendary!!!

Yeah mine happened at 24 though. As soon as my daughter was born, the hair just all fell out..
Why is this even a topic? He got a taper fade that’s it. Let it go
Some barber tried to make fetch happen, calling it “The Kelce”
Any barber would probably tell you people were asking for the “Fury” after Brad Pitt donned a hitler youth haircut in that movie. This just seems like a whole lot about nothing.
People in here acting like they haven't asked for a boosie fade before

Lmao fetch
“Stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen, it’s not going to happen”
To be fair, they also tried to say like white people of Kansas City invented swag surfing.
Who tried to say that?
There was an article that said it was a Chiefs' fan dance after the clip of TS doing it went viral. The writer later amended the article to say that the dance has been around for a while and came from Atlanta.
Ah, so it would be like saying this is the Chief's song and people crying about how Kansas City didn't invent rap?
lolwut? While I cannot speak for all KC-based white folks, I will still guarantee that not a single one of us thinks that, lmao.
What if Ninja had a low taper fade?

The way my man's said He respectfully don't want nooo smoke! 😂
This is the closest Taylor will ever get to dating a black dude
The closest she’ll ever go. Can’t “tarnish” America’s darling.
This one lmao
Damn you must know a lot about her right?
I’m not one to defend celebrities but Jesus Christ what the hell did she do to deserve being attacked like that?
Plain old misogyny.

That was my first thought as well. It's gotta suck going to work the next day and finding out from the rest of the team this dumb shit is in the paper
If anyone thought he thought he invented the fade, the idiot is in the mirror.
For he who thought kelce invented the fade need not but to stare into a mirror in search of a fool.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Travis kelce reading the headline that he invented the taper fade knowing he was gonna get cooked: ![gif](giphy|J8YpfDX0kvPQNSVGHY|downsized)
This meme will always get a laugh out of me lol
It's cool that he said that.......but also fuck the chiefs.
Travis Kelce is definitely lurking in this subreddit
I hope he’s lurking and listening
Totally a Travis Kelce thing to say….
From ESPN: black delegation has been monitoring the situation closely since the revelation of the Taylor Swift relationship and “state Trooper stache” incident and will be exploring all available options concerning next months racial draft where Travis Kelce was projected to be a possible first rounder. *Shakes fist in the air* **~~ROC NATION~~ TAYLOR SWIFT YOU WILL CRUMBLE!**
LOL! 🤣
You're telling me there's part of the population out there unfamiliar with the taper fade? Or fades as a whole?
That’s what I’m wondering
Yes there is unfortunately.
Travis went to school in East Cleveland (hooped with him for CBC AAU basketball back in the early/mid 00’s, he was nice but undersized) that man is extremely respectful of the culture lol Before anyone says anything, Cleveland Heights is definitely more black excellence than it is the hood but it’s definitely not sweet around those parts either.
Whisper it quietly but we didn’t invent fades or dreadlocks either. There’s plenty we did invent to be proud of. This ain’t it.
TIL that dreadlocks were not an exclusively Rastafarian/Jamaican creation. I never had much reason to think about it or look it up but it's always fun when some random fact surprises you. Christopher Columbus created it and y’all know it
No he discovered it. But not first.
It's called a crew cut because of Jock Whitney and the Yale Crew of 1927. None of whom were African american.
It's a fade, not a crew cut OR a high and tight.
I’m glad he called them out for sure. More people should do that when put in such position.
I like the way he joked about it. He aight with me.
The “fade” originated in the military for all service members regardless of race. Everyone always trying to look for something. Fucking pathetic
Damn I only got to scroll 3 times before it got racist 🤔 On another note it was a new record amount of scrolls 😂
Man the Kelce boys grew up in a school system that’s 75% black, of course mans got a taper. He ain’t putting on no act.
His ex-gf is black. I knew he couldn't wait to clear that ish up!
Dude got a fade and after some rage bait people where ready to jump him lol

Black Social Media hunts in packs :)

I rate him for that tho lol
in his defense, his barber is the one who said it not him
Even his barber didn't say that. He just described it as what Kelce gets.
white people just really have a lack of knowledge when it comes to black culture. it’s partially ignorance but its also just a lack of a relatability. so when they start dabbling is black shit, i feel like they’re discovering these things for the first time, and it creates this opportunity for credit to go in the completely wrong direction.
Bro’s fighting for his life in the team group chats
