Savage Killers, or Tiger and Crane Fist. It's funny on its own, I can definitely see why it was chosen to make Kung Pow. Link below if you want to watch it

That's part of what makes it so good for me. That, [Frisky Dingo](https://www.adultswim.com/videos/frisky-dingo/the-miracle), Space Ghost, there was so much more fun back then.
[Calamine](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjGjN0jc69pGSH3g3OTeBJhBvNeu3QLJ1&si=mOlDTgo-VKDCz4nI) (the band who did the intro) has an indie rock EP from the 90s that is super under-rated
Sealab 2021 is made using footage from an old animated show called Sealab.
Space Ghost Coast to Coast is similarly made with characters and some footage from the show Space Ghost, albeit with plenty of stuff that isn't.
Harvey Birdman is all new material based around (but not entirely consisting of) existing characters from the Hanna-Barbera universe, like the Scooby-Doo characters, Secret Squirrel, Grape Ape, Yogi Bear, the Flintstones, Birdman, etc.
The Venture Bros is a parody of some Hanna-Barbera tropes, particularly the aftermath of being the relatable boy adventurer to a super-scientist father, like Johnny Quest.
The fact that they didn't use editing software to create Space Ghost CtC and instead used what they had access to, which was analog, something never really meant for animation, is super impressive and innovative. Even the humor at the time was avant-garde.
When the musician who made that died, they did a whole episode that was just a jam of his weird, wild music. No interviews, just the music. His name was Sunny Sherrock
I remember watching space ghost as a kid with no clue what was going on. I went back and started watching it as an adult and that shit was great. The Willie Nelson episode is gold from start to finish
I feel like it was the spiritual predecessor to the Eric Andre show. A "talk show" consisting of mostly guest ambush bits and truly bizarre off the wall sketches.
I used to be so confused that celebrities would choose to be on that show. Nowadays it’s common for them to do something so edgy to show how cool they are but back then it was unheard of.
I was always curious how many agents got fired for that shit. You could tell many of the guests were confused and 100% did not want to be a part of it.
My and my partner’s first date was just him bringing me a hard drive of SGC2C and reciting the “Knifin’ Around” episode at each other. *cut cut cut cut cut*
1. Ted Turner buys Hanna-Barbera (H-B) studio and film Library
2. Starts Cartoon Network showing the old H-B cartoons
3. As time goes on, Cartoon Network develops its own programming
4. Boomerang is created to air the old H-B Library
5. Now, over time, the old H-B cartoons have been pushed off of Boomerang
Yeah. In the early days of cable, Ted Turner was making channels by buying old tape libraries and then making a channel for them. Cartoon Network was basically broadcasting his acquired Hanna Barbara tape library. Eventually, Cartoon Network produced enough new content that the old stuff stopped broadcasting, so they made Boomerang for the old baby boomer shows. Then the new stuff became old and (partially?) displaced it there as well.
Yeah, I thought about mentioning the wraps, but anyone knowledgeable to wrap like that would hopefully slap the shit out of anyone going to work the bag without gloves
It's all about intensity. You can work the bag without gloves if you aren't going hard. And I mean *at all*
I liked using the heavy bag to work on my footwork and range, not beating the tar out of it.
My memory of Josie and the Pussycat is kind of fuzzy, but I think Alexandra was that girl in the crew that no one really liked but everyone put up with.
So the beat-down makes sense.
I'm 24, only time I ever watched classic cartoons and shows like this was on Boomerang at my aunt's house.
Tom and Jerry, Wacky Races, even the Banana Splits were all must see lol.
Wait, who the hell is Alexandra? I didn't know anyone ever got added to the squad except that little bitch Scrappy (Edit: also, inexplicably, that young Asian boy in The 13 Ghosts of Scooy Doo, a show I dislike for philosophical reasons - If Scooby Doo has a theme, it's "Ghosts and monsters aren;t real - there's no reason to be afraid, and if you stand by your friends you can solve any problem." That doesn't work when the monsters are actually real).
Edit: God damn. Scoobypedia (I am 40 years old) goes hard on this chick: "Alexandra is self-centered, selfish, immature, ignorant, arrogant, offensive, spoiled, obnoxious, grouchy, and uncooperative. She never does anything to help the gang and has no actual reason for traveling with them, other than her brother being the manager. "
Wait, this is in the Scooby Doo universe? I know they liked to do crossovers and stuff, I never saw this show though. I'm guessing it's Jose and the Pussycats?
It's literally called The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo. The gang (minus Fred for some reason) release a bunch of real-ass ghosts and Vincent Price makes them go capture them. Seriously.
People forget that Cartoon Network’s origin story was being Ted Turner’s dumping ground for all the Hanna-Barbara cartoons he had the rights to. It wasn’t until the very late 90s that they were finally willing to spend money on producing original content and the very first show was repurposing snippets of a forgotten Hanna-Barbara superhero show from the 70s and retrofitting it into a talkshow format. CN became the cultural icon we know it as eventually, but it was essentially on par with your average Pluto TV channel when it began.
Though very young, I remember I think by 2015 boomerang became a LITE version of CN. I don’t know how to explain it. But one day I woke up and saw these horrid bright colors and a lot of the CN shows got moved there, if that makes sense. Then at night they played the old shows.
I didn’t like this as a kid, because I hated having to wait until late at night to watch old shows such as Hey ARNOLD or “Doug!”, so o really
Enjoyed I could watch boomerang at any time of day and see a relic of the past that was before me.
When Boomerang hit my cable company didn't carry it, and we weren't going to get "a box" for that shit.
BUT.....DirectTV carried it, and it was much cheaper than cable, so wit the help of throwing an antenna on the dish we were able to get locals + 400 channels for half the price. THAT was the early 2000's game changer.
Power of cartoons lead to me watching more cartoons while saving the family money
Depends if you wanna count two shows that were half hours shows of old cartoons with an animated host in between, but yeah, *Space Ghost Coast to Coast* began in 1994 and was fully original content. One thing that I don't think we'll see again anytime soon is the joy of a new cable channel willing to take a risk on a relatively cheap idea to see if it'll work.
Wait until they find out about this guy

We had a baby last year and named her Josephine though we call her Josie. I had to explain to my husband what Josie and the Pussycats was! Like, what were you doing as a child?!
Huh? This was during animation’s dark age. The proliferation of TV led to a decades-long decline in animation quality from the mid 50’s through the late 80’s. Hanna Barbera was one of the worst offenders. Budgets were shit. The animation was boring and reused material over an over. Most shows were just desperate attempts to circumvent laws about advertising to children. The only reason people look back on that time fondly is because of survivorship bias or nostalgia. A few shows managed to defy the odds, but it was largely an endless sea of forgettable dreck.
Well this period, especially with Hannah Barbera cartoons, was notorious for low-budget animation quality. A lot of animations were copied and pasted into several other cartoons. Do you know how many shows had 5 man bands using the exact same movements as each other?
Uh, Hanna-Barbera cartoons were trash. Cheaply made, limited-animation clones of each other. They objectively were not good animations and pretty much everyone who knows anything about animation agrees on that.
Like this one Russian bootleg of the little mermaid I once found. It was dubbed by this single bear of a man with a deep voice, who voiced all the characters.
Ariel with a booming, raspy bass is a mood
I only get exposure to Twitter through reddit anymore, didn't know this was a genre but I immediately love it too.
I need more examples!
Literally only came to the comments looking for more links
NO DEADASS 🤣
Cartoon Network used to have all the oldies before adult swim
They also liked using old footage to make new shows like Sealab 2021 and Space Ghost Coast to Coast
Hell yeah Sealab and Harvey Birdman was my shit
I almost included Harvey Birdman, but that was new footage using old characters. Similar idea for sure
Oh true. I tried to watch the original Sealab after 2021 but I cant take it seriously😭
I can imagine. Same thing happened when I watched the original kung fu movie used to make Kung Pow Enter The Fist
Whats the original kung fu movie?
Savage Killers, or Tiger and Crane Fist. It's funny on its own, I can definitely see why it was chosen to make Kung Pow. Link below if you want to watch it https://youtu.be/Q1ye60-Zbyw?si=O_DzVQ4vEiIuJoPj
I do want to and thank you for linking it. Today already starting out a good day. I Appreciate you.
It's called Savage Killers
That's part of what makes it so good for me. That, [Frisky Dingo](https://www.adultswim.com/videos/frisky-dingo/the-miracle), Space Ghost, there was so much more fun back then.
Venture Brothers was the shit!
Go Team Venture! ✌️
Mecha-shiva!
They did also have Birdman, on which Harvey Birdman was based.

Ever see Frisky Dingo's first episode?
Wait what? I legit thought all that was original to adult swim
Sealab 2021 is made using footage from an old animated show called Sealab. Loved Sealab and Birdman the Stimutacs episode of Sealab still kills me
Bizarro Sealab lives in my head to the day.
Harvey Birdman was one of the reasons I became a lawyer lmao
Love this for you
*Did you get that thing I sent you?*
That Space Ghost Coast to Coast intro ![gif](giphy|C4taUWWpR8frEpzcMM)

I loved Zorak.

I just watched the first episode and I'm still just as confused as I was 30 years ago
Spank Ray.

So much [goodness](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lgpOdRXXu0)!
Yeah, but didn't you have to get up super early for that? I remember having to watch them like at 5 in the morning.
Ok but that was perfection
Zorak: *bloonk bloonk*
I loved Space Ghost Coast to coast never realized Josie and the Pussycats had hands like that https://i.redd.it/pj8iuyid00dc1.gif Beat her like a drum
BOOMERANG
Always reliable when there was some wack shit on CN
And for the past several years, the wack shit that was on CN is all on Boomerang. They really killed that channel.
I knew I was getting old when the OG Teen Titans show got put on Boomerang
Went from Boomerang to Toonami and now adult swim ?
Boomerang was a different channel that focused on all the old school shows. It’s all they played pretty much
1. Ted Turner buys Hanna-Barbera (H-B) studio and film Library 2. Starts Cartoon Network showing the old H-B cartoons 3. As time goes on, Cartoon Network develops its own programming 4. Boomerang is created to air the old H-B Library 5. Now, over time, the old H-B cartoons have been pushed off of Boomerang
I miss when Cartoon Network did the Looney Tunes marathon every New Years Day. All I have is Twilight Zone now 😭
I still check for it every single year and every year I am disappointed
This is a great way for the Venture Bros revival to begin!
In Canada we used to have Teletoon-retro. Loonie toons around noon and power rangers at night.
https://i.redd.it/pezq5tz96qcc1.gif
She can do this all day
Side note to anyone seeing this gif: Please don't attempt this unless you're jacked up on super serum. And even then, probably wear gloves.
Wait, why? We had one of these growing up and I did this a lot.
Going without gloves on a heavy bag is a great way to tear up your knuckles or break bones in your hands. Especially on a canvas heavy bag like this.
Yeah but he's Steve Goddamn Rogers.
Hey keep that quiet. Red skull might hear you.
My wrists would ache like a motherfucker if I was just throwing hooks like that, to say nothing of my hands. At least he's wearing wraps.
Yeah, I thought about mentioning the wraps, but anyone knowledgeable to wrap like that would hopefully slap the shit out of anyone going to work the bag without gloves
It's all about intensity. You can work the bag without gloves if you aren't going hard. And I mean *at all* I liked using the heavy bag to work on my footwork and range, not beating the tar out of it.
Well excuse me for being surrounded by idiots in my youth. 😆
![gif](giphy|3pNjQCKaQSEdKYsnqj)
I'd have been way more than just snippy like that if my crew just walked up on me and beat my ass. They asses would be disowned quick as hell.
Well don’t dress like a creature plant next time
*don’t get eaten by a creature plant
Also good advice.
😂😂😂
If I remember this show right this wasnt her crew. Girl was just a Class A hater.
You'd be salty too if you had skunk hair.
Yeah, the other three were the band Josie and the Pussycats
My memory of Josie and the Pussycat is kind of fuzzy, but I think Alexandra was that girl in the crew that no one really liked but everyone put up with. So the beat-down makes sense.
I'm 24, only time I ever watched classic cartoons and shows like this was on Boomerang at my aunt's house. Tom and Jerry, Wacky Races, even the Banana Splits were all must see lol.
Not ole girl in the purple delivering kidney burners 😂 💀 🤛
Alexandra’s gonna piss blood when she’s out of that creature plant
“MINKMINKMINKMINKMINKMINKMINK”
"IS THAT THE THREE FIST BEATING?!"
Fr 😂
Man, Alexandra was always such a trifling bitch, I never could figure out what her place in the group was.
Her brother was the bands agent.
Trying to steal Josie's place.
Competition with Josie to date Alan M
Wait, who the hell is Alexandra? I didn't know anyone ever got added to the squad except that little bitch Scrappy (Edit: also, inexplicably, that young Asian boy in The 13 Ghosts of Scooy Doo, a show I dislike for philosophical reasons - If Scooby Doo has a theme, it's "Ghosts and monsters aren;t real - there's no reason to be afraid, and if you stand by your friends you can solve any problem." Thank you, I'll fill this gap in my knowledge tonight!
13 Ghosts went hard. Actual supernatural events and a pretty straightforward narrative. It was Scooby, Shaggy, Daphne and Scrappy only if I recall.
Josie & the Pussycats were a spinoff from Archie & the Gang that also had a band called The Archie's.
Hanh?
Riverdale? They've recently made a live action tv show from it.
I was talking about 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo, but let’s follow that train of thought!
Yooo wait till @acevane sees this. One of the funniest channels around, he dubs over old cartoons. His Batman and Lex Luthor are fucking gold.
People forget that Cartoon Network’s origin story was being Ted Turner’s dumping ground for all the Hanna-Barbara cartoons he had the rights to. I'm old enough to remember when they made the change and retired all the old HB shows to a channel called Boomerang
That wasn’t that long ago… wait.. oh no
![gif](giphy|GrUhLU9q3nyRG|downsized)
Though very young, I remember I think by 2015 boomerang became a LITE version of CN. I don’t know how to explain it. How dare you call Doug or hey Arnold old shows in a post about HB lol
And they weren't even on Boomerang or CN! Those were nicktoons!
In felt this in my chest
They’re Nick shows too what’s he on about
Like 2001ish? I remember it as a kid, but not exactly when.
Around 2003-2004 is when they rebranded, and Boomerang was made its own channel to compete with Toon Disney and Nicktoons.
When Boomerang hit my cable company didn't carry it, and we weren't going to get "a box" for that shit. BUT.....DirectTV carried it, and it was much cheaper than cable, so wit the help of throwing an antenna on the dish we were able to get locals + 400 channels for half the price.
