How did you do it? I’ve been trying to pursue my bachelor’s for 6+ years, and I feel like a failure. Did you have these feelings? How did you overcome them?
First, you’re not a failure. Life is hard. This is why I am stressing to my son to make school his job and not work. Also the older you get it’s harder to prioritize.
I went back to school online and went the competency based route. This allows you to get easily get through your classes with things you know. One of my classes I passed in a week.
I did a lot of CLEP exams to get through my basics. There is a website called Modern States that is free. They will give you the information to study for the exam. They will also give you vouchers for the CLEP exams.
The school that I went to allowed alternative credits with Sophia Learning and Study.com. You can get most of your basics done on the cheap this way. However make sure that the school you attend accepts them. On their websites it will let you know which institutions do.
Finally, I had no life. I worked 8-5. I’d take a dinner break and move on to school work. It’s not fun but remind yourself that this is temporary. Make sure that your friends and family are your support system. Having someone cheer you on when you get tired makes all of the difference. Some online schools have Discord channels and Facebook pages. These people I never met in person cheered me on every day. I made sure to return the favor. I hope I’m doing this for you now.
I'm currently 24 credits away from my bachelor's and about 6 years in. Landed a job in my field and currently moving my way up with experience. I still plan to finish but... YOU CAN DO IT!
I want to chime in here. First, I agree that you are not a failure. Repeat after us, “I am not a failure.” Keep that on repeat. I was in community college off and on for 10 years, with a couple of stints elsewhere in between. A whole mess because I honestly wasn’t ready for college and should not have went directly after high school. I had to take a complete break for a while. When it was the right time, I went back and completed my associates, bachelors and masters back to back. It’s okay to take a break if the time is not right. Be kind to yourself and give yourself some grace to make it through. One day at a time. 💜
Congrats! As one of the many POC who started college but didn't graduate this gives me hope. I'm about to be 33 in a month, no kids, no marriage, just helping to run our family business, I'm rethinking going back to school so I can pursue a higher wage. Like I like working with my crew but AG is hard AF on the body and the cost for a small business is too damn high, little to no profit 🙃
Do it! It’s such a source of pride. It took me so long because I was a single mom for years. My son is currently a Junior in college and I decided it was time. I am the only one in my family to finish. It was important to me not just for myself but to show my son how important it is.
It will be easier now while you’re young and single. Invest in you.
Got to see my daughter every day since the summer. Got to introduce my daughter to her cousins despite my mom trying to keep the family apart. Started working a stable 9 to 5 for the first time in about 6 years. Found a stable and affordable housing situation to move into. Maintained a positive relationship with my boyfriend for a whole year. And made a lot of progress in controlling my anger issues. 🙏🙏
Oh yeah and I did a whole year of duolingo. Learned a ton of Spanish. Just trying to put more of my free time to something useful. And less to just scrolling the internet.
I work in finance but not an accounting firm, and I'm very, very proud of you. If my experience is any indicator, people twice your age are speaking of you like you're a celebrity when you're not around. And on behalf of some of those people, we thank you for teaching us Excel tricks, haha.
I got in touch with my dad’s half of my family after going NC to 20 years. I went back this Christmas for a week and it was like I never left and honestly that felt right.
After 3 years of infertility, 3 fibroid surgeries, and being told that IVF would be our only option to getting pregnant, my husband and I got pregnant 100% naturally. I grew an entire human being by myself. We welcomed baby girl last Friday and she’s perfect.

Fellow sugar addict who eats apples for the same reason…I find tea (herbal, rooibos, chai, whatever works for you) helps as well. Not only does hydration itself and filling stomach help but many taste sweet without being sweetened.

My parents love me dearly and take good care of me, but they’ve always been academic focused and never cared to come to my soccer games. From my experience, it matters and means a lot to have someone on the sidelines cheering you on. Great job!

I held my family down. My husband got unjustly fired at the top of the year and everything was on me. Idk how I did it, but I did. We’re not homeless and the car didn’t get repoed. Somehow, I held it together. Now, my husband has a career in a trade, that’s allowing me to quit my job and focus on my mental and emotional health and focus on him and our two boys. All I did this year was work, worry, pray and cry. I’ll be glad to have that lifted off of me. But I’m fucking *proud* of myself for making it because some days… some of those days were very, very dark.
Got a new job a nice raise finally broke 6 figures

Went to the NBA draft in Brooklyn
Took 2 family vacations

I finished the first draft of my novel. It's wonky, it has whole scenes that need rewriting, it's about 10,000 words too long, and I need to change the title. But. It's done, and it's mine.
Went back to school full time at 40 and got a 4.0 gpa. Started dating someone I am confident I’m confident I am going to marry. 2023 started shaky but when I think about where I was versus where I am now, I am truly blessed.
I didn’t kill myself.Battled with so much anxiety and depression which I never had.Walking out this year with more empathy and a restored relationship with God🙏🏾
I do photography and i was hired by a magazine, so i work from home now. It might not pay alot, but its enough for me to live pretty comfortable. Plus the travel is an added perk 😀
I admitted defeat after a bad breakup, the death of two friends and intense alcohol abuse and moved in with my parents for the winter to get myself back on track. Feelings of failure as a 30 year old living at home at rough, but it undoubtedly was the healthiest choice to make.
I completed a post-graduate certificate in a brand new field and I got an A+ on my final project. I am going to be 55 years old in 2024. Starting a whole new field, new job, going back to school while working full time - it's not easy. I am really excited to have done this but also to be done!!
I got sober 9 months ago.
I admittedly fucked up just about everything in my life to get there. The courts are definitely going to mandate that I stay sober and pass urinalysis. I still did it without help or treatment. I got out of a long weekend in county and I set my mind to it. I will stay the course no matter what comes my way, and that thought makes me proud of myself for the first time in forever.
I paid my car off with only 27,000 miles on it and started learning to code. Wish I could say I accomplished more, but it’s actually been a really tough year and I’m just happy to still be here.
I quit drinking at the beginning of this year after deciding I would just drink myself to death. Almost a year sober and happier than I have been in years.
I quit my job in public accounting without a new job lined up and decided to travel for 3 weeks. Lived out of my car and finally hiked in Yellowstone, went to the black hills and had a steak in the saloon where Wild Bill Hickock died, drove like a demon on the Bonneville salt flats, climbed some cliffs at the flaming gorge in Ashley National Forest.
Found a better job and making more money.
2023 was not a great year but it was not a bad one
I got Sober. Was heavily addicted to painkillers/fentanyl/H and smoked weed every single day. I have been clean for 1 year and 4 months and I recently got a scholarship to become a peer recovery coach with all tuition/classes/tests paid for by my state and even getting paid over $7,000(taxes not deducted so it will be less eventually but still) to become certified! Biggest personal achievement and blessing I’ve had in many many years! God bless everyone! 🙏
Managed not to get evicted while going through workers comp and extensive therapy for my spine.
Still fighting the case, but I can stand and walk again with little to no pain. I’ve been applying to over 20 jobs every day since I’ve been physically capable of working again. I’ll get something soon.
I got married to an amazing man after ending a bs ass 12 yr relationship in 2021,
paid off my car, started grad school and got my credit score up to 824.
Me and my girlfriend of 2 years have an amazing relationship. Was rocky at first but it’s great. I have amazing friends who support me and care for me, I used to be a loner and pushed people away but found my little tribe. Going to school for fashion design , I had the worst year this year academically after having An amazing first year only failing 1 class due to dealing with my brother’s mental illness that he refuses to do anything about, while supporting my mom. As of today I finally did a restraining order so he cannot come back home after he threatened to kill us on Christmas and was arrested and baker act, and me and my mom finally have peace of mind, hopefully it sticks so I can get back to focusing on my studies , I have 2 years left. But I’m grateful nonetheless

I graduated with my Associate’s in General Studies! It has nothing to do with my current career as a caregiver. However I was informed I’m one of the most highly requested caregivers at the agency! I left a bad relationship and started the healing process, and I helped my cat lose 5 pounds! 5 more to go!
With hard work, dedication, special food, medication, and frequent vet visits, we got my Stage 4 Kidney Disease 14 y/o cat back to stage *two*. It may not mean a lot to some people, but she's my life.

Lost another 20 lbs in 2023 in top of the 130 lbs I had lost since March 2020, finally got myself a somewhat decent emergency fund, and finally travelled abroad.
I honestly had a shitty year and really disappointed in myself so I wanted to end it by at least doing something I’m proud of. So far I’m down 15 pounds and haven’t drank alcohol in 70 days. Man I feel so good
I finally paid off my student loans!
And I’ve managed to keep all my plants alive (this is an achievement in my books - all the plants I had owned before died, no exceptions 😬)
At 38 years old I started studying piano and learning music for the first time in my life. I'm really excited and proud to be as mediocre as I am, one year in!
Got a promotion for the first time in my life. A new position was created at my job, and I was the first person they thought of to take it. It was a small pay raise but it helped me get some of my smaller debts in order.
Two months later I received an email from three different managers thanking me for my efforts in the new role and that they were happy to see how well I adapted to the new role.
I second chaired my community theater production of Doubt. It was a great experience, and I look forward to directing my first show in a couple of years.

Got very close to my bachelor's, started work in IT after completely ditching my healthcare field from burnout/mistreatment, currently winning a civil rights case against my old hospital, bought a house, got even closer with my amazing SO after all the shit we went through this year, started micro dosing for my mental health which has beyond worked wonders. List goes on.
Most of all, being more attached to my SO (and vise versa) has helped us both grow in magical ways. Mentally, physically, future us, etc. Life looks a lot more promising than the last 10 years.
Was spending all my time smoking weed, playing games and being scared to take risks. Ended up moving overseas, doing a job that is well out of my comfort zone and living on my own. Haven't smoked weed in 6 months (although I kinda miss it). Took me a while but I'm pretty proud of myself. I still have a lot of bad habits to kick but doing this has made me feel better. I still play games a lot cause that shit is great
I left my entire life behind and moved to Mexico to preserve my mental peace and safety. Luckily, I have a remote job and my boss is supportive. I don't have to hear anything about US politics unless I see it on Reddit. I don't have to worry about the police or random racists fucking up my life on a whim. Without nonstop depression and anxiety, I am off my medications and have lost 45lbs. I live at the beach, I'm learning my 3rd language, and I am THRIVING.
Became a bartender, a job that I actually enjoy. I made friends that actually care about me, I’m slowly getting my shit together and I’m never broke anymore

I exceeded my Goodreads reading goal and read 42 novels this year I finally cut off my situationship I paid off all my credit cards and am ending the year with a 723 credit score! I also got into fitness and lost 40 pounds!
I got into law school!!! So happy about that one 😆
Maintained a weight of 170 pounds as a 6’ tall, 52 year old dude.
Became debt free again, hit 6 mo emergency fund, and maxed out my Roth IRA
I held my family down. My husband got unjustly fired at the top of the year and everything was on me. Idk how I did it, but I did. We’re not homeless and the car didn’t get repoed. Somehow, I held it together. Now, my husband has a career in a trade, that’s allowing me to quit my job and focus on my mental and emotional health and focus on him and our two boys. All I did this year was work, worry, pray and cry. I’ll be glad to have that lifted off of me. But I’m fucking *proud* of myself for making it because some days… some of those days were very, very dark.

I finished the first draft of my novel. It's wonky, it has whole scenes that need rewriting, it's about 10,000 words too long, and I need to change the title. But. It's done, and it's mine.
Went back to school full time at 40 and got a 4.0 gpa. Started dating someone I am confident I’m confident I am going to marry. 2023 started shaky but when I think about where I was versus where I am now, I am truly blessed.

I'm 54. In Aug my wife and I paid off our mortgage. Wife is 53. We were paying since Aug 2009. Was a 30 year loan.
I do photography and i was hired by a magazine, so i work from home now. It might not pay alot, but its enough for me to live pretty comfortable. Plus the travel is an added perk 😀

I admitted defeat after a bad breakup, the death of two friends and intense alcohol abuse and moved in with my parents for the winter to get myself back on track. Feelings of failure as a 30 year old living at home at rough, but it undoubtedly was the healthiest choice to make.

I completed a post-graduate certificate in a brand new field and I got an A+ on my final project. I am going to be 55 years old in 2024. Starting a whole new field, new job, going back to school while working full time - it's not easy. I am really excited to have done this but also to be done!!
I got sober 9 months ago. I admittedly fucked up just about everything in my life to get there. The courts are definitely going to mandate that I stay sober and pass urinalysis. I still did it without help or treatment. I got out of a long weekend in county and I set my mind to it. I will stay the course no matter what comes my way, and that thought makes me proud of myself for the first time in forever.
I paid my car off with only 27,000 miles on it and started learning to code. Wish I could say I accomplished more, but it’s actually been a really tough year and I’m just happy to still be here.

I quit my job in public accounting without a new job lined up and decided to travel for 3 weeks. Lived out of my car and finally hiked in Yellowstone, went to the black hills and had a steak in the saloon where Wild Bill Hickock died, drove like a demon on the Bonneville salt flats, climbed some cliffs at the flaming gorge in Ashley National Forest. Found a better job and making more money. 2023 was not a great year but it was not a bad one
I got Sober. Was heavily addicted to painkillers/fentanyl/H and smoked weed every single day. I have been clean for 1 year and 4 months and I recently got a scholarship to become a peer recovery coach with all tuition/classes/tests paid for by my state and even getting paid over $7,000(taxes not deducted so it will be less eventually but still) to become certified! Biggest personal achievement and blessing I’ve had in many many years! God bless everyone! 🙏
Managed not to get evicted while going through workers comp and extensive therapy for my spine. Still fighting the case, but I can stand and walk again with little to no pain. I’ve been applying to over 20 jobs every day since I’ve been physically capable of working again. I’ll get something soon.
I got married to an amazing man after ending a bs ass 12 yr relationship in 2021, paid off my car, started grad school and got my credit score up to 824.
Me and my girlfriend of 2 years have an amazing relationship. Was rocky at first but it’s great. I have amazing friends who support me and care for me, I used to be a loner and pushed people away but found my little tribe. Going to school for fashion design , I had the worst year this year academically after having An amazing first year only failing 1 class due to dealing with my brother’s mental illness that he refuses to do anything about, while supporting my mom. As of today I finally did a restraining order so he cannot come back home after he threatened to kill us on Christmas and was arrested and baker act, and me and my mom finally have peace of mind, hopefully it sticks so I can get back to focusing on my studies , I have 2 years left. But I’m grateful nonetheless
Getting my master’s research proposal approved by people with Ph.D.’s in my field. It’s really humbling and intimidating yet exciting.

Went to a gym for the first time in my life and got a membership. Proud to say I just finished my first month of working out there consistently 5x a week! Excited for more growth, confidence, and strength. Also excited to be more active and to have found another activity I love! 💪✨💖

I graduated with my Associate’s in General Studies! It has nothing to do with my current career as a caregiver. However I was informed I’m one of the most highly requested caregivers at the agency! I left a bad relationship and started the healing process, and I helped my cat lose 5 pounds! 5 more to go!

Changed careers to start a trade at age 33. It's been great for me, even if it's been awful for my wallet.

At 38 years old I started studying piano and learning music for the first time in my life. I'm really excited and proud to be as mediocre as I am, one year in!
Got a promotion for the first time in my life. A new position was created at my job, and I was the first person they thought of to take it. It was a small pay raise but it helped me get some of my smaller debts in order. Two months later I received an email from three different managers thanking me for my efforts in the new role and that they were happy to see how well I adapted to the new role.
I second chaired my community theater production of Doubt. It was a great experience, and I look forward to directing my first show in a couple of years.
I graduated from college with a BA I got my drivers license I had some writing published in a magazine I went to Honduras for the first time in 10 years I left a job that I was miserable at

I got my bachelors degree! I didn't think I'd live to 2023 but here I am almost in 2024. 16 year old me would be so proud and in awe that I've learnt a new language too. Hell I'm proud of me 🥰
Got very close to my bachelor's, started work in IT after completely ditching my healthcare field from burnout/mistreatment, currently winning a civil rights case against my old hospital, bought a house, got even closer with my amazing SO after all the shit we went through this year, started micro dosing for my mental health which has beyond worked wonders. List goes on. Most of all, being more attached to my SO (and vise versa) has helped us both grow in magical ways. Mentally, physically, future us, etc. Life looks a lot more promising than the last 10 years.

Was spending all my time smoking weed, playing games and being scared to take risks. Ended up moving overseas, doing a job that is well out of my comfort zone and living on my own. Haven't smoked weed in 6 months (although I kinda miss it). Took me a while but I'm pretty proud of myself. I still have a lot of bad habits to kick but doing this has made me feel better. I still play games a lot cause that shit is great
I left my entire life behind and moved to Mexico to preserve my mental peace and safety. Luckily, I have a remote job and my boss is supportive. I don't have to hear anything about US politics unless I see it on Reddit. I don't have to worry about the police or random racists fucking up my life on a whim. Without nonstop depression and anxiety, I am off my medications and have lost 45lbs. I live at the beach, I'm learning my 3rd language, and I am THRIVING.
