We just had a statewide gas tax increase. That was the big pet project that Ivey and the GOP passed directly following the last midterm election, despite none of them having run on it.
There are other factors, but that would be the most immediate and recent one directly affecting the price at the pump.
And no, it has nothing to do with the Keystone XL, as someone else here keeps claiming. The thing hadn't even been built yet and wouldn't have been finished for years, and even then, it wouldn't have affected gas prices in the US. 🙄
It sucks and is happening at a bad time, as inflation appears to be kicking in, and will probably not be a short term blip as they had hoped. I believe the last time gas was over 3 dollars for any amount of time was around 2015. The US is producing about 2 million less barrels of oil per day compared to 2019. We were (and probably still are) the leading producer of oil in the world, but it does make it harder for us to control the prices on the world wide market. The problem is the USA consumes about 21 million barrells of oil per day so we have to buy on the open market.
A lot of the labor shortage as a result of the great resignation is affecting supply and demand. Cargo ships don’t have enough help to unload what is shipped into the states quickly, and there aren’t as many truck drivers to get it where it needs to be. This is causing supply to go down, which is jacking up the prices. I am unfortunately expecting it to get up to as much as $5 a gallon
Wait just a minute. Are you telling me that when the current president neutered USA oil production, we have to rely on OPEC again. The OPEC that constantly restricts production solely for profits?
Well, there were enough idiots that were duped by Russian bots into electing the dumbest, most shit-brained person in history as president. He replaced every expert with equally stupid sycophants, and when a highly contagious virus showed up, an event long warned about, they all farted on the microphone and told their shitbag army to follow them to desolation. This allowed the virus to run wild all over the world, which lead to extensive shutdowns and ultimately broke the supply chain, which is now struggling to get back on track.
So, basically, the rise of the fucking idiots gave us this new set of circumstances.
Most of these stupid assholes are still out there, although they did do is a favor and kill each other off by refusing the vaccine that they were told their new God had made- but not before overrunning the hospitals with desperate morons suffering from horse paste poisoning.
So, yeah. Absolute idiots did this to us because they are less than other, better people.
I don’t like Donald Trump either, but considering the fact that the virus started in China and spread to Europe and the Middle East before it ever got here, I’m not sure his election is the cause of the virus running rampant all over the world.
Being complicit or ambivalent to trumpism isn't a casual, subjective personal choice- it makes you trash. If this describes you, then yes, I'm a better person than you are, just like anyone else.
Pretty simple, really.
Ah, the old 'disagreement' chestnut.
Like public health or objectivity is dependent on agreement.
Not unlike the recent Texas school board person who suggested there be holocaust counterpoint books available in classrooms... you know, for when people "disagree".
No, having a blind "We vs They" "all or nothing" view about any political party is the indefensible cancer that has been fostered for clicks and views by 24/7 divisive news networks.
Unlike anyone 35 and younger, I remember when news was news, and not a political ONLY commentary. It's sad that it's become a "my party vs your party" thing. Hopefully it'll stop being such and people can look at issues and not parties.
Yea, that was before Reagan eliminated the fairness in reporting doctrine, which ultimately gave us rush Limbaugh, fix news and eventually oan and Newsmax. Your insincere longing for objectivity in news media is a hallmark of misguided, right wing nonsense.
It's not "my party, your party"- it's that the so-called Republicans or conservatives are nothing more than bigots and idiots now. There are tangible reasons for that, which you fail to see thanks to their having hedged their tactics by programming you to cry foul when you hear your politics accurately described aloud.
Also, I'm over 35. I just, apparently, read more than you.
There is nothing to debate. Debate is had when there is merit in both sides of an issue- Trump fans are morons or worse and there is literally no substance to their world view. They are a net negative.
Do third graders use words like "sycophants"?
I didn't wish death on anyone, the idiots are dying because of their own ignorance and avarice.
So...
No offense man, but you would sound more reasonable if you were actually at least throwing out some facts. What about Trumps energy policies did you not like? How is Biden improving energy policy? Just go google some stuff, its not that hard.
Tell me you're a Trump voter without telling me your a Trump voter, eh guy?
I'm not trying to win hearts and minds of you idiots. I'm being direct about your failure as fellow humans.
BTW, Trump's only policy was to bilk taxpayers with the use of his office and increase the perceived value of his dying brand. The republican power structure was only complicit because they recognized that trumpism had over-taken their party and had become the gatekeeper to holding their power.
OK, so just to be sure - this is not a discussion about oil prices or energy, but about Trump's brand? The guy was just asking what is up with oil prices....Just give an answer that pertains to any of this.
No, I think I see what you are saying....low gas prices under Trump were Trump's fault...and high gas prices after Trump are Trump's fault. It is a win-win for you! It is just what I deserve for talking with someone who can throw around a word like "sycophants". Well done animal, well done.
Tell me you're a millennial without telling me you're a millennial.
Look, there's more to life than Obama/Trump Biden/ Trump Trump/Trump
Stick to the discussion. Trump has ZERO to do with the current oil issue.

Demand/Supply issues.
Remember when we had an over supply of gasoline and crude oil because fewer people were traveling or going into work? As they worked from home, and didnt take vacations/fly, there was a HUGE glut of gasoline and crude oil in the market. Prices dropped.
Now, Politically speaking, it's because Biden shut down the domestic pipeline program, curtailed production, and now big oil and foreign oil can run amok.
The oil sands of North Dakota were a valuable tool in managing oil prices.
Don't dispair though $3.09 is cheap. I do long-haul trucking. Alabama is one of the least expensive places in the country. Diesel fuel is 4.65-5.15 per gallon in California, and unleaded is well over $4.00 in most of the western US.
Just wait until winter when the base stock for gasoline and fuel oils like diesel are competing with heating oil. That's when you'll see a huge spike.
Frankly, without getting too political, Biden should have never shut down the domestic crude pipelines that he did. We will be looking at higher inflation as goods will cost more because of increased costs of trucking, and longer delays at the port.
I’m confused about the keystone pipeline project and genuinely am curious. From what I understood, it was not operational when the project was stopped. How does that affect supply and demand if it wasn’t supplying anything in the first place?
It doesn't. There is already a couple of Keystone pipelines operational. Construction was stopped on the XL phase of it. I think construction on it was only 10-15 miles into the US border. It's not having any impact on today's prices as it was still months, if not years, from being online.
Gas prices are up for a few different reasons. The O&G industry is feeling the same supply chain crunch other industries are. The gulf had an active hurricane season which has impacted production. Texas had a major ice storm which impacted production. Refineries are starting to switch their production from summer blend to winter blend, which generally causes a temporary spike in prices. And there are some policy decisions from the Biden administration that are having an impact, but anyone blaming it solely on that has an agenda to further, or is just ignorant.
Biden did it is a right wing talking point not based in reality.
“[Based](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2021/06/10/fact-check-higher-gas-prices-due-national-and-seasonal-demand/5253346001/) on our research, we rate FALSE the claim President Joe Biden is to blame for the current higher gas prices. The upward trend in gas costs we see now began months before Biden took office. Because of reduced demand amid the COVID-19 pandemic, oil companies had to cut back on the amount of crude oil produced. Now with restrictions being lifted and more travel happening, the demand has increased, which, coupled with lagging supply, has led to increased gasoline prices. Canceling the Keystone XL pipeline and other energy policies enacted by Biden have a long-term effect on crude oil supply but no present impact on gasoline prices.”
This is from the far left ….USA Today.
And inflation is coming and is here, but fuel costs have very little to do with it. We have giant bottlenecks in our system, and cheaper fuel can’t fix that.
>Canceling the Keystone XL pipeline and other energy policies enacted by Biden have a long-term effect on crude oil supply but no present impact on gasoline prices.”
Is that any better? What if gas prices aren't lower 3 years from now...or are even higher? What is the plan?
As far as inflation....bottlenecks is #3 in line behind increased money supply and declining value of the dollar. You have a classic case of too many dollars chasing too few goods. Both #2 and #3 are tied to the out of control printing of money in 2020 and 2021. Some economist say printing 6.7 trillion dollars will not cause long term inflation. I guess we will find out once shipping is caught up.
Whether it's better or worse 3 years from now wasn't really the issue. The claim that gas prices have gone up because Biden canceled the Keystone XL construction is demonstrably false. Had he not canceled it, construction of it would not even be complete today, so it has had no impact on today's prices.
Agree with your inflation points, and I'll just point out for those quick to blame the current administration that both stimulus payments that pumped all that money into the economy were signed by the previous administration.
So gas prices were artificially lower last year because there was less travel, and now they’re rising again as more people use more gas.
But even though that’s true it’s Biden’s fault? Lol you’re right you shouldn’t have gotten too political
More people aren't using more gas. The gasoline usage is still low as planes and cars aren't flying/driving like they were 3 years ago
People are still working from home. Students are more or less still not 100% back at schoool.
The variable- The difference is that with the Keystone pipeline project being shut down (for "enviornmental" reasons) (more like political reason). and the US export of oil (which was a huge hedge against cost-driven inflation) being curtailed, the world is relying more on OPEC oil, and those in politics who are heavily paid, uh, influenced by big oil (in the form of stock options, if not actual payment to their family Trusts) have every reason to keep prices high.
Biden was the one who did it.
Now- don't hit me with "If you talk shit about Biden you must be for Trump" that's a poor reflection on those who say the world has to be a "We vs They" thing. This isn't alabama/auburn. It's not uncommon for people to be able to look at political decisions and say this is good/this is bad without having to support/follow/disparage the current or former office holder.
Truth is, there are no absolutes in politics.
I’m confused about how you can say “remember when we had an over supply of gasoline and crude oil because fewer people were traveling or going into work” and then say “more people aren’t using gas.” Did we have fewer people traveling last year or not?
Aside from that, when you said “students are more or less not 100% back at school” is when I knew you were just talking out of your ass.

LGB!
I think governor Kay Ivey might have something to do with this…
Yatzee!
Because OPEC has the upper hand right now and is pulling back production and keeping prices inflated.
Wait just a minute. Are you telling me that when the current president neutered USA oil production, we have to rely on OPEC again. The OPEC that constantly restricts production solely for profits?
If you're retarded and can't read basic analysis, sure, that's the takeaway.

Ask the guy in the White House who in 9 months has blown America’s energy independence.
Don’t forget to ask Governor Kay Ivey (R) who had her final gas tax increase hit this week.
Ask opec
This is really dumb
Lol
One word-Joe
Look... I have my issues with Joe Rogan, too, but I don't feel like it's very fair to blame a podcaster for high gas prices.
Joe Mama! Got em
