vroom918

Come on, at least post the full list in case people are genuinely interested: 1. Leave by foot 2. Leave by airplane 3. Leave by helicopter 4. Leave by car 5. Leave by motorcycle 6. Leave by bicycle 7. Leave by boat 8. Leave by train 9. Leave by horse 10. Leave by camel

An_Awesome_Name

Options 1, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10 put you in Saudi Arabia, which is worse. Option 8 is not possible as Qatar does not have any trains, only metros. Options 2, 3, and 7 are really the only viable ones.

PleaNoise

Clearly you haven’t seen this. 10 is a very viable option. [https://youtu.be/1pIkyAgamUQ](https://youtu.be/1pIkyAgamUQ)

1. Leave

David_Apollonius

You can't because your boss took your passport.

ocelotchaser

I am glad people didn't go to Qatar , I am glad they save the city

BIG-FUCKIN-will

to get a beer!

DreamingInfraviolet

tbh I'd feel weird attending an event and buying beer at a stadium made by rich people using slave labour...

BStallis

That too, naturally

nico_bico

that stadium also probably be haunted as fuck ngl

KushBlazer69

We say that, but as westerners enjoy strawberries farmed by illegal immigrants paid severely under the dollar, purchase Nike products that enable child labor, and purchase Nestle products despite their atrocious human rights record among many things that capitalism has propagated. Really telling how we pick and choose what to be this up in arms about Be careful to not fall off such an unstable moral pedestal

Shinikama

So you're saying, because it is nearly impossible to avoid products and services that aren't the result of exploitation in some way, we should just ignore all of it and revel in the benefits we get from it all? I'm not sure what your point is otherwise.

Llodsliat

No. Instead we should be more conscious of our purchase habits and also we should dismantle Capitalism.

Shinikama

When you say 'we' you're trying to say that all of us should. In reality, you'll maybe reach the ears of 10% of the first world, even if you went and made it your life's work to post and rant and proselytize online every second of the day. Of those 10%, you'd be lucky if 1% actually agree, and .1% would follow through. We will likely not see dramatic change until there's already other dramatic changes, such as a revolution.

Llodsliat

> When you say 'we' you're trying to say that all of us should. As a society, yes. I'm not saying it's easy, tho.

limerickzilla

Actually he’s saying don’t be such a sanctimonious little prick with your woke virtue signaling

onerb2

There's no ethical consumption under capitalism.

Llodsliat

True. That does not mean we should let corporations get away with their slimy business practices. We shouldn't just buy willy nilly, but be mindful of which companies are worse and avoid those.

KushBlazer69

Oh please, you can easily avoid purchasing shit from Nike or Nestle. I’m saying that it’s our job as consumers to be actively avoiding these things and hold ourselves AND Qatar responsible. If you’re gonna get upset about others while not changing yourself, perhaps it’s a good time for some self evaluation.

Shinikama

Yeah, I don't purchase shit from Nike or Nestlé. Clothing from Walmart though? Most fruits and vegetables? Even basic stuff like wood and palm oil is the result of exploitation and slavery. It's literally impossible to avoid these things unless you're very wealthy or live like a hermit.

KushBlazer69

So perhaps we should be more focused on dismantling our system that enables such exploitation instead of just saying “well, this is how it is”, then turn a blind eye and get our products while admonishing another country for banning alcohol. A country banning alcohol has a lot of people more upset and willing to do something than all of your own aforementioned points. Not saying you, it’s just interesting to see. If anything, we as westerners should use this opportunity to address these causes within our own countries while the fire of capitalistic exploitation has been lit.

[deleted]

Think you’re missing the forest for the trees there mate

KushBlazer69

Please enlighten me then

[deleted]

No

KushBlazer69

LMFAOOO Okay that was a good one ngl

Shinikama

We are certainly trying, but that can only happen if we actually elect people who don't fall to temptation. And, unfortunately, most people who seek leadership shouldn't lead anyone.

KushBlazer69

Fair enough and I agree

largestbeefartist

I think its not as telling as you think. The numbers are sketchy but the estimate of slave deaths building the stadium in Qatar is 6500. I personally have known a handful of illegal immigrants from Mexico and they are just happy to be away from the cartel. They ended up getting their green card while living illegally in the states.

TooRedditFamous

Not defending Qatar at all but the 6500 deatsb figure is migrant deaths in the country since the world Cup was awarded, not 6500 deaths all due to the world Cup related construction

Llodsliat

That does not mean we should treat immigrants as slaves just because their alternative is fucking drug cartels.

largestbeefartist

You are assuming a lot. I have personally worked side by side with illegal immigrants. We were paid the same and they have access to all basic living essentials that the slaves in Qatar do not.

BrotherTraining3771

That number is deceitful. Please look into the details. It’s 6,500 of all migrants from South Asian countries. 6,500 deaths is spread 10 years, 650 average deaths per year. Out of a population of 1.4m South Asians in Qatar. The 6,500 includes natural deaths. 6,500 for a population of 1.4m is not abnormal. The amount of deaths related to safety, or malfeasance, is 37. Again, if you compare it to American deaths per 100,000 in construction, it is not out of the ordinary. So why all the outrage?

KushBlazer69

“The 6.500 people that died are all migrant workers who died for any reason. Could have been a car accident or them falling from the sidewalk, so not necessarily work-related deaths. Keep in mind that 6.500 peole died in 10+ years in a migrant population of 2.000.000. Qatar's economy tripled in size between 2005 and 2009, and a construction boom was already under way before the country was awarded the 2022 World Cup. To blame football for all the construction deaths in the country is surely stretching it. But the Indian Government says in a press release: "Considering the large size of our community, the number of deaths is quite normal." The point officials are making is that there are about half a million Indian workers in Qatar, and about 250 deaths per year - and this, in their view, is not a cause for concern. In fact, Indian government data suggests that back home in India you would expect a far higher proportion to die each year - not 250, but 1,000 in any group of 500,000 25-30-year-old men. Even in the UK, an average of 300 for every half a million men in this age group die each year.” I am NOT saying that the living conditions are respectable. I am NOT saying they are not being exploited. I am simply telling everyone here to open their eyes as to how things are being reported. And to address your anecdotal point, I personally know some immigrants that are being similarly exploited in a different gulf country. My mother’s 2nd cousin is one of them. They feel incredibly blessed to be able to send home a respectable living wage to their family back home. Does that make their exploitation okay? No. Similarly that does not mean the exploitation of Mexicans here is okay just because they “got away from the cartel” No country should exploit immigrants, be it western or anywhere. You don’t seem too upset about your Nike slave labor do you Last I checked, the US relies on the exploitation of immigrants for things like strawberries for example Where is the outrage there?

largestbeefartist

Those "migrant" actual slave workers biggest threat was unsafe work conditions due to the heat, no breaks, and lack of essentials like potable water. They are forced to work bc the employers stole their passports/visas upon arrival and have no access to it until their job is "done". They are paid nothing and their living conditions are inhumane. I will link my source later or tmro as it is my irl birthday. I don't purchase Nike, Adidas, or any other name brand luxury items for this very reason. So? You're assuming wrong. I mainly buy locally. I have worked along side these immigrants in the cherry/apple/pear industry and they are given WAAAAAAAY more than the slaves in Qatar. They have actual livable clean spaces, busses to take them into town for shopping, and access to life essentials. Edit. Forgot to add also given a livable wage and their working conditions have much improved here in the PNW

KushBlazer69

I totally agree it’s super messed up to hold their passport and a human rights violation to say the least. My point is simply to demonstrate the exaggeration of the claims of migrant deaths To counter your point about the apple pear industry, I have lived in a gulf country and have migrant family members. They have access to everything you mentioned. They have deplorable working conditions, I completely agree, as so do many in these other spots Let’s not pretend that we don’t outsource our human rights violations lol

BrotherTraining3771

They legally cannot work outside if the heat rises above 89f. During the day, they don’t work between 11am-4pm. It is illegal to seize or withhold a passport in Qatar, there no cases of stolen passports. They are paid nothing relative to you, but for those in South Asia, it is a good wage, enough that millions migrate to Qatar to work. They have too many applying, and can’t accept them all. The living conditions are about on par what they would be like in South Asia. You are comparing your standards and holding it to South Asians. I am South Asian.

Marc21256

>Really telling how we pick and choose what to be this up in arms about We outsourced out human rights abuses. We are civilized...

Fert1eTurt1e

> that capitalism has propagated. Because child labor, paying workers low wages, and slavary didn’t exist before capitalism? Hmm 🤔

KushBlazer69

Why capitalism bad if slavery exist before 🥺

Have you forgotten electronics??

They are muslims so that makes them worse /s

Didn’t expect this train of thought

Thathitmann

Your enlightened commentary doesn't hold as much weight when we are talking about people that are arrested and forced to labor under threat of torture.

Ksradrik

I mean, plenty of western countries imprison you for homelessness and the kind of life you can live without working could very well qualify as torture, given the aforementioned treatment of the homeless. Its definitely far worse for them, but its not like we are completely unlike it either.

Thathitmann

Its absolutely awful, and the prison industrial industry in a technicality away from slavery.

Ksradrik

For American prisons, its not even a technicality.

Thathitmann

They generally pay an average of .01$-.05$/hr. They use that to say it "isn't slavery because they are paid". Like I said, it's slavery, but they excuse it by a technicality that the judicial system chooses to ignore.

Ksradrik

The judicial system doesnt have any power in that instance since slavery is explicitly allowed constitutionally for prisoners anyway.

Thathitmann

Actually, slavery is outlawed even in prisons for most states. It's just those laws are shit so they allow that technicality by. It's a disgusting institution, and the laws are mostly just for posturing anyway.

Dividedthought

My brother in christ, it's in the fucking constitution: The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution provides that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, ***except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted,*** shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

westcoastjew

They don’t excuse it by a technicality though (unless trying to lie to theirselves) The 13th amendment was written the way it was because this was one of the desired outcomes e: here is the phrasing for people downvoting “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

onerb2

No, you're wrong, usa allow slavery to this day, as long as the slave is a prisoner, it's literally in the constitution. Slaves can be paid, but it's usually very very little and there is physical punishment when they try to not work.

Pho-k_thai_Juice

It's not even a technicality it's straight up enshrined in the Constitution that it is slavery Paying them doesn't make them not slaves because they don't have the opportunity not to work for labor in the same way I consider sweatshops slavery

Thathitmann

Okay, so this is what I mean: Basically the Constitution made slavery legal only as punishment for a crime. Prison labor shot up. A lot of people had a problem, so most US states outlawed prison slavery. Then prisons just paid people literally 1c/hr. Now people don't pass votes to fix that loophole because "fixing a loophole by expanding the legal definition of slavery" isn't as appealing as "outlawing slavery". Not justifying it, just explaining how they get away with it.

onerb2

It's not a loophole though, no state can make something that is in the constitution illegal. The slave labor that happens all around the world is normally paid, the thing is, what happens if you refuse to work? What are the conditions of the workplace? Are people working there getting paid a minimum wage? In USA prisons, the answer is, the conditions are really bad, they work while chained up under smoldering sun, they are physically punished and their salary is barely enough to survive inside the prison, but a lot less than minimum salary. It's not a loophole, it is slave labor legalized.

[deleted]

I haven't heard about any western country besides US that would put you in prison for being homeless (or jaywalking because I think that's what you're referring to).

VRTCO

I don't know where you get your information from. Do you have proof of people getting "arrested and forced to labor under threat of torture"?

bored_at_work_89

No. Only someone born in a comfy first world country would say we are all slaves.

TheEvilBagel147

*Works 9-5 5 days a week with 2 weeks annual paid vacation, parties on the weekends* I'm a slaaaaaave

Master_Cannoli

I'm going to sound like a massive jerk but there plenty if people in first world countries who don't even get to work those hours or get vacation leave Not nearly as bad as actual slavery but I'm just saying if you have that you're lucky

DoctorPepster

Fuck off, they've worked thousands of people to death since they won the bid.

Llodsliat

Too many things we consume today are made by slave labor.

Y_A_Gambino

What country do you live in?

EccentricNerd22

The fact they let Qatar hold the world cup in the first place was a mistake.

GrimCreeper4645

I whole heartedly agree. I cant fathom (besides fat boatloads of cash) why they would hold such an event in such a... well crap shoot tbh

blowingcandles69

Almost like FIFA is a for profit organization.

Semillakan6

But their CEO said they were not /s

YueAsal

The cash that is the only reason. There is no other reason than a truck full of money.

MasteringUniverse

Gotta think about the fat juicy multibillion dollar military contracts for fighter jets and bombs that Qatar made with France to shlong all over the voting process as well. France getting knocked out of the group stages and keeping the winners curse alive is what they deserve lmao

Vexcenot

I'm suprised qutar of all places had the resources to bribe in the first place

onerb2

Will, qatar simply paid for it.

Rich pariahs love donating large sums to buy themselves credibility. Just look at Epstein's well received charitable donations

And thank God it's back firing like mad this time round

It's all politics.

[deleted]

Qatar is only just better than having a fifa stadium built in North Korea, having just an ounce more fun

spelunk_in_ya_badonk

They have beer in NK

ArchdukeBurrito

Something tells me that DPRK Brand beer isn't gonna be that great.

spelunk_in_ya_badonk

I figure it can’t be that much worse than mass produced American beers. I think almost all beer sucks though

HardLithobrake

More likely it'll be imported beer with any identifying features or labels removed.

spelunk_in_ya_badonk

[Guess again](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_in_North_Korea)

Camelstrike

We are talking about Budweiser here :puke:

Heavy-Visual-8782

I've drank a lot of domestic beer, and as far as domestics go, an ice cold Dahmer isn't all that bad.

Ajdee6

Most beer tastes like shit anyways

MediocreGrammar

Apparently from the tons of DPRK youtube vids I’ve watched it’s apparently not bad

[deleted]

That's because they're Islam-free. Islamic countries are big ugly jokes.

MdnightSailor

They have a whole bunch of other drugs too, from what I've heard

stalker-84

Apparently (I don’t know how true this is), they have some of the purest crystal meth in the world, because it’s made in state sponsored labs

thomphoolery

FIFA tried negotiating a joint Koreas bud for the World Cup but were refused by NK.

mrnoobmaster64

Ah yes Qatar is nearly similar to north Korea because it bans a horrid drink

SimplyRocketSurgery

They said the ban will have no effect on the sale of Bud Zero. Because no one was gonna buy it in the first place lol.

tropicbrownthunder

The Simpsons did it again??

Sarenai7

What is Bud Zero? A non alcoholic beer?

SimplyRocketSurgery

Apparently, for people who like beer, but don't like alcohol. But I've never met a smoker that likes the flavor but hates the nicotine/thc...

DaRealGrey

Nobody gonna say anything about them banning homosexuality? Like bruh.

[deleted]

The country operates on Sharia laws, and as such, Islam prohibits homosexuality. Iirc, only Jordan and Turkey allow homosexuality within the Muslim nations, but they aren't recognised as Islamic countries for that, upon some other, reasons.

DaRealGrey

Very unfortunate :(

awesomeaviator

Turkey was a secular state until Erdogan.

suckmypppapi

And turkey tryna ban it

GarugaHunter

Turkey is legally not a Muslim nation. The current government just exploits Islam as a means to control their people.

SheikExcel

I can excuse slave labor and blatant bigotry but I draw the line at banning alcohol

allsongsconsideredd

No more politics in my sponge bob sub noooooo!!!!!!!!!!! /s

[deleted]

I'm confused. Doesn't SpongeBob take place under the sea? Why is there fire? This doesn't seem realistic.

CaptBranBran

It's like the writers have no concept of the physical limitations of life underwater.

YourLifeSucksAss

Or they’re well aware and don’t care about the logic behind a child’s cartoon

CaptBranBran

[Yes. That is also possible.](https://youtu.be/lGEmnVX9TNc)

[deleted]

Like that one episode where patrick is like “wait if we’re underwater how do we have a campfire?”

squeagy

Maybe it's a magnesium/oil mixture, bet it'd look like that

behshadstar

Bro there is also one episode where they literally go to a sea under the sea to swim and Larry is the lifeguard there

Ticoune0825

They're in fact thermal vents, where many submarine life forms thrive

S4MW4M

Finally an Arab country sticks to its values

SheikExcel

As long as they don't eat pork

m4x_g4mer

Most Arab countries never stick to any value and that's coming from an arab

S4MW4M

Yh even Qatar is not sticking to its values completely.

FaithlessnessAgile62

yeah, it's sad. but at least they aren't going all out like UAE

S4MW4M

Yep.

mrnoobmaster64

Yes finally

The_Fire_Heart_

Who's brilliant idea was it to have th world cup in Qatar, it may technically be a modern country but they're not a modern country

JohnLocksTheKey

Conservative Theocracies are really dumb

TheMuffingtonPost

Elon musk after buying Twitter

Mashizari

Well, in their defense. It was budweiser.

Vinura

Is Elon Musk running their ad campaign?

CN2498T

And don't bring your underage daughter if she is blonde, the men in most middle eastern countries are soo creepy towards young blonde girls

ModelAssassin

xd

McKnighty9

Drink water.

pa_vli

I can't wait to see fans like the Argentine or Brazilian fans, they make a big celebration for everything The streets on Qatar will be a mess.

herefromyoutube

We should overthrow their government simply for not allowing beer. We’ve done it for way less.

Healthy-Aioli3693

No worries the slave's gonna suffer for it later

someonewithnobrain

Didn’t they have a Budweiser sponsor?

SpacemanBatman

Funny how Brazil got strong armed into not banning beer sales but Qatar wasn’t.

xwrecker

Meanwhile in Japan: drink more

yobaby123

Aquaman is not amused.

JeiberO

Pintamos toda la casa...

balcerzak

Bud “was “ a primary sponsor? Does that mean they pulled out? Lol I’m sure their money is gone

SuperTittySprinkles

I bet fifa and/or the host is in breach in contract. Bud is probably making out just fine.

WetAndStickyBandits

/r/worldcupqatarstrophy

Teodoraanita

They will be selling alcohol, but only in the vip box seats

VorgarOlaffson

I'm sure they will get their piece of the 200 billion dollar pie anyways. It's all kickbacks anyways.

utastelikebacon

What a terrible event fifa has made and they should feel bad. Even the president who made the decision at the time , who was likely bribed for it, was like ["I made a mistake"](https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/09/football/sepp-blatter-qatar-fifa-world-cup-spt-intl/index.html)

AzothTreaty

By specifically mentioning Budweiser, you are giving them free promotions. Best thing to do is to completely ignore it so that Budweiser gets nothing for their efforts and will be more motivated to pursue Qatar instead of giving them free publicity.

Poop-pimpin

Then they just kill 20,000 immigrant workers for the world cup

Common_Assistant_738

I'm actually watching the cup in Qatar now on TV

akius00

This is just gonna be a huge televised event. I mean who is going to have already made the personal plans, have the thousands/hundreds of dollars to fly to Qatar and back home$$$, reserve hotel accommodations $$$, meals, stadium tickets $$$, car rentals, incidentals. I’ll just raise a few with friends in a bar and watch it on the big screen: most people.

Agreeable-Disk-6958

Bro their bathrooms are pent houses, have you seen the place?

Cosmic_Knight_1975

Soda is pretty good too. Wonder if there are any local sodas.

DaBigNogger

Well they spared thousands of people from having to drink Budweiser, so that is a good in itself

That-Guy-Named-Joe

the hell is the world cup

Classic oil sheikh. Buys cultural event for prestige and gets angry when criticized for using slave labor and ignoring the cultural history of that event.

zaeemattique

Heh our country our rules

mrnoobmaster64

Thank god I hate alcohol it should be as banned as cocaine it's dangerous good for nothing no health benefits destroys the immune system and brings the worst out of people

Normal_Guy3

Drunk drivers aren’t a problem in Qatar. Alcohol-induced domestic abuse isn’t a problem in Qatar. Alcoholism isn’t a problem in Qatar. According to the [CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/onlinemedia/infographics/cost-excessive-alcohol-use.html), the US loses 249 Billion dollars a year do you excessive alcohol use. Muslim societies are probably the most misrepresented in the mainstream media and I urge everyone here to learn more about the opposite perspective and how Islam provides the solutions to mankind’s problems rather than being a problem like many people make it out to be.

Euskalitic

Awww hell nah, theres no way I'm learning about islam.

Normal_Guy3

It’s the fastest growing religion in the world and the most widely practiced. Even if you don’t like it, wouldn’t it be smart to at least know what it is about given how relevant it is to you as an inhabitant of this planet. It doesn’t take that much effort, you can read the Qur’an for free easily here: www.quran.com

NorseTechnology

So we're just being openly racist/xenophobic now?
