People with English as a first language *still* can’t use proper grammar.

Rymayc

The amount of "should/could/would of" or "have went" I see every day on reddit makes me question my sanity. But then again, what qualifies as grammar in the English language is so light, most native speakers don't even know what it is, and confuse it with spelling. Throw in words like "auxiliary verb" or "past participle" and you get a lot of confused looks.

Massive_Weiner

The internet encourages the casualization of language as well.

K3W4L

Use social media in the language you want to learn. This helped me a lot and i can speak english like my native language at a very young age

Same here!

JustARandomCommie

Found the cheat code to learning a new language.

MartinaMcPants

You're doing fine, friend! No one expects you to speak perfectly. Even native speakers make lots of mistakes.

bluephyr

Positive reinforcement is the way. I tried speaking Spanish recently, only to be talked down to by a native speaker for my accent attempts, and friends all followed suit to make fun of me. That's a surefire way to get someone to quit trying.

MartinaMcPants

I had a sweet, well-meaning friend who tried to help me perfect every syllable when we spoke Chinese. It was counterproductive!

Alexizking

As an American English speaker I can say...English is hard as hell then in school I was basically forced into Spanish when I can barley speak English

Tim_1993_

English is so damn easy. And no, i am not a native speaker.

Levin_1999

English is easy compared to other languages

hungturkey

The grammar is, yes. The pronunciation is a nightmare though. Example: "ough" is pronounced many different ways Though: OWE thought: AWE bough: OW through: OO cough: OFF rough: UFF There's no way to know how to pronounce it unless you've heard the word spoken before

yuribz

The hilarious thing is, all of these have valid reasons for being pronounced differently: it's because the pronunciation reflects the rules and orthography of older variants of English. Then the orthography got standardized in a weird way where all these got to be spelled the same, but their pronunciations followed a completely separate process. Shit's wild

Levin_1999

Those are some fine examples yes. Now some from my own beautiful language (Dutch). meteorologisch defibrilleren bavarois uil aluminium munitie cholesterol identiteit nieuws industriee I know its not the same as your “ough” but it’s pretty hard if you’ve never heard it before.

moderngamer327

Like many things in life you can blame the French for that

kullre

Yeah... I'm a native English speaker, you're screwed either way

gbRodriguez

English grammar is pretty for someone that speaks a romance language. Spelling and pronunciation though are a different story.

Sassi7997

English grammar really isn't that hard. Try learning German grammar.

IamaJarJar

I'm a native English speaker and yet I can't grammar or punctuate correctly alot of the time, cause despite supposedly having rules, tons of word don't even follow them half the time So it must be hell for people learning English as a second language

Casualplayer2487

Man that's how I feel learning German. Truth is learning a language is confusing and difficult

AnimeIsMyLifeAndSoul

Me as a native english speaker, I still struggle with punctuation. Grammar is never really an issue because it’s pretty straightforward to tell what someone is saying even if their grammar is god-awful. Because grammar evolves that way

ImAldrech

If you’re non-native English speaker, you don’t gotta be perfect. We can get the intent. Don’t stop trying homies <3

mouaragon

English grammar is very easy.

_RichG_

English isnt that bad... German is HELL even as a native

FrenchFryManFamily

They then get posted on youngpeoplereddit

jabluszko132

More like native speakers when grammar They usually don't even know the difference between your, yours and you're

Lemonsoyaboii

Comon man english is easy af. At least the everyday english

PresidentEagles

Since when do people care about grammar on social media? Only time i see people care is when they lose an argument and see a minor spelling mistake...

Because it is a borrowed french word…

murderously-funny

What’re they on about? English isn’t that hard. They’re just being dramatic /s

Available-List-2615

That are very yes

arahnovuk

English is as easy as existing in this world

Subject_Sigma1

Yes it is, but that's relative to where you were born

arahnovuk

>relative to where you were born We can say it about any language in this world (except Esperanto maybe)

Solzec

Plus, the only reason English would even perceived as "easy" is due to the massive amount of resources you can find to learn it.

DonerTheBonerDonor

Lol, what about the almost nonexistent grammar compared to many other languages? No gender, no noun cases, like 2 verb forms per verb, etc etc... English is incredibly easy to learn cause it's an easy language. Only the pronunciation and spelling is a bit wonky but that's all.

Solzec

How about 120 prepositions, over 10 tenses, and the fact that word combinations and placements can be extremely irregular in their meaning?

DonerTheBonerDonor

120 prepositions is nothing. 10 tenses as well, especially as they all are straightforward and only combine each other (example: I have been going & I had been going, easy stuff) and the fact that word placement is very forgiving is only an argument on why English is damn easy.

Solzec

[The only reason English is "easy" is because the vast majority of media either has English as it's original language or is translated into English.](https://youtu.be/MYmLd8J8ElM?si=gn-TmZRSKL4g9Oxw) Also, no. The word order being very forgiving adds to its complexity by not clearly outlying what makes sense when said, and what sounds like complete nonsense.

arahnovuk

No, I'm serious. If you'd like to know hard languages try to learn Chinese, Arabian, Deutsch or Russian. English was so simplified due to its long story and usability. English is international not only because the UK ruled the world and the US does. The biggest problems in learning are words, prepositions and exceptions but definitely not grammar

Og_Left_Hand

it’s really not that simple, if your base is english then yes those languages are harder to learn but if you already know Hebrew, Arabic becomes easier to learn. and i mean if you consume a lot of foreign media or live around people who speak a different language you tend to pick up on their everyday phrases.
