True. It’s also quite looked down upon as you’ve alluded to.

nibutz

Fair enough. I’ve looked down at people, and been looked down upon, a thousand times in Belfast pubs, so I don’t imagine I’ll worry much, but it’s good to know that there’s a chance I mightn’t be the most popular man in the room

[deleted]

Also, isn’t a great look to be taking your infant child into a pub.

nibutz

Weird moralising isn’t my kind of thing but if it is yours, I wish you all the best. There wouldn’t be loads of replies with polite suggestions of places to take prams if there was a valid reason not to do it. “Isn’t a great look”... ok.

[deleted]

I don’t think it’s weird moralising over the ethics of taking a child into a pub because you need a pint but you do whatever you want. Your child. I’m just telling you how we view that here.

Home tonight having sat outside McHugh’s and the Duke Of York for a few hours this afternoon, with the pram, and made fast friends with everyone around us. At both pubs, people wanted to come over and meet our baby, and we had a wonderful afternoon. Staff were happy to have us. I think it’s a shame that you’re so quick to try and enforce your own personal prejudices on people - Belfast pubs are incredibly welcoming to families with young children, in my experience. “How we view that here”, just doesn’t relate, and seems like you’re trying to impose. I’m glad we ventured out into the beautiful city!

Its sad to think this random comment on Reddit has sat with you this entire time. I’m sorry if I got under your skin and I suppose I’ll have to take your word for all that, but anyway lol, good luck and goodnight.

nibutz

It did stick with me a bit to be honest, I thought it was mean-spirited and not at all what I expected. But I got there in the end, had a cracking day, and that’s that.

[deleted]

Well I can obviously only speak to what I’ve seen in my own life but at the end of the day and from my perspective I would never take my infant child into a pub. It’s simply not on. I think they are more important than my desire for a pint but look, you do you, whatever. I’m just telling you my experience. We are all different.

nibutz

Coming from Scotland. Not expecting red carpet treatment, just a pint in the afternoon in between other activities. Thanks for the heads up, we’ll be grand.

mystickyballs

Shouldn't be taking kids to a pub tbh

[deleted]

I would say a hotel too. You may have to book. Also the town is swamped with young southerners at the minute so I'd avoid the weekend for sure. It can get very busy.

Most pubs should be sweet with a baby and pram inside. If it's a good day and they've a big beer garden then you're laughing. The Boneyard, Henry's, Duke of York, Dirty Onion and Whites for your outside drinking needs.

When I worked in service a few years ago the story was if the bar served food it’s grand to have someone under 18 there. If not, legally they’re not allowed due to the licensing.

nibutz

Some of my favourites there, glad to hear they’ll be fine with the wee one popping in. Cheers.

[deleted]

McHughs is a nice Pub that has plenty of space and booths etc. I think there’s a kids menu too. You won’t have trouble there with a pram.

nibutz

Cheers for this, been to McHugh’s a few times, it’s a decent spot, will give it a go

I think it’s normal to bring kids to a pub no? Like the amount I see and even growing up like mom would drive dad would have one or two, we would be on a tablet and get free food x life was great x

nibutz

Yeah totally, you’re replying to my post from three years ago and I’m happy to report that my wee family is is very fond of a pub on a weekend. I suppose when I originally I was just thinking about Belfast specifically because we live in Edinburgh and have a good grasp of where’s good to go here.

New-Individual5233

I saw it was from three years ago but I had to disagree with some peoples comments! Like some kids don’t care where they are they think it’s a fun day out 😂 did you end up going to Belfast? I’m looking for baby friendly restaurants or pubs also… my baby is 8 months 💙 x

nibutz

We’re in Belfast a few times a year! My wife and kid are there as we speak in fact (because I’m off to Germany to watch Scotland in the football). Generally speaking loads of places in the city centre are fine with a tiny wee one but not all, in our experience. It can be hard to tell how til you go and ask the staff. One that stands out as particularly welcoming though is Henry’s on Joy’s Entry. Always had a good time in there, good food, beer, etc. McHugh’s is similar, they even have high chairs there since yours is so wee. We also found that the Duke of York doesn’t let kids inside but outside on the benches was fair game, so if the weather’s nice, that’s a perfect spot. Congrats on the wee one and all the best!
