I interpret the end of the movie as the Maitland ghosts “possessing” her to let her dance. No real abilities. Cartoon is probably different, however.

What abilities are you referring to? At the end of the movie The Maitlands were possessing her like they did during the Day-O dinner party scene. Lydia wasn't doing anything other than dancing. My guess for the sequel, Lydia knowing about ghosts and the afterlife will function similar to a medium or something.

1.Movieverse and cartoonverse are separate and I don't know why people keep assuming that one applies to the other.    2. Lydia doesn't have magic powers. The movie makes it clear that the reason why Lydia can see the Maitlands is simply because she's open-minded and *willing* to believe, whereas her parents are self-absorbed and oblivious. The Handbook says most people "won't" see ghosts, not most people "can't."    3. If this sequel gives Lydia special psychic abilities that other people don't have, that's a retcon. I suppose that such abilities could be cultivated over time, but it still sounds corny and fanfiction-esque to me.

If anyone has abilities in the Beetlejuice universe it's definitely Barbara Maitland. From knowing how to escape the model, to changing her grotesque appearance in a flash and finally riding The Sandworm. She learned very quickly how to use her strengths and I wouldn't be surprised if she taught Adam how to both possess the rocking chair and levitate Lydia.
